Mastermind stalwart John Humphrys will step down from hosting duties in March this year after announcing his departure from the BBC show in his Daily Mail column. The presenter began his hosting stint in 2003 but the 77-year-old has decided now is the right time for someone else to take on the role.

John admitted he didn’t know who his successor would be but hinted at the possibility of a female host joining the show.

Writing in his column he said: “When the present series comes to an end in March there will be someone else in the chair.

“I wish my successor well — but I’m not sure I envy them, whoever ‘they’ may be. What are the odds on the first female?”

The presenter went on to reveal he first turned down the hosting job after mistakenly believing the BBC wanted him to appear on the show as a guest.

It took me roughly ten minutes to discover that working in showbiz is very different from working in news. For starters, you’re treated like a star.”

The former BBC Radio 4 presenter detailed the difficulties the show had when he first signed up as host.

Mastermind has been axed in 1997 and was brought back with John at the helm.

However, the six year gap meant producers struggled to persuade members of the public to join the show’s studio audience.

The mastermind behind some of the world’s biggest and longest-running botnets has been jailed and his vast criminal infrastructure taken down, in part because of a careless operational security blunder that allowed authorities to identify his anonymous online persona.

Officials from the Republic of Belarus reported Monday they detained a participant in the sprawling Andromeda botnet network, which was made up of 464 separate botnets that spread more than 80 distinct malware families since 2011. On Tuesday, researchers with security firm Recorded Future published a blog post that said the participant was a 33-year-old Belarusian named Sergey Jarets.

To most people, Jarets was known only as “Ar3s,” the moniker assigned to a highly respected elder in the criminal underground. In online discussions, Ar3s demonstrated expertise in malware development and the reverse-engineering of software. He also acted as a reputable guarantor of deals that were hashed out online. As it turned out, the ICQ number of the figure he used as one of his primary contact methods was registered in several whitehat discussion forums to one Sergey Jaretz.

Magnitsky Act mastermind seeks to stop Cyprus from revealing his offshore assets to Russia https://briefnews.eu/magnitsky-act-mastermind-seeks-to-stop-cyprus-from-revealing-his-offshore-assets-to-russia/ https://briefnews.eu/magnitsky-act-mastermind-seeks-to-stop-cyprus-from-revealing-his-offshore-assets-to-russia/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2017 05:01:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/magnitsky-act-mastermind-seeks-to-stop-cyprus-from-revealing-his-offshore-assets-to-russia/ A group of MEPs have urged Cyprian authorities not to cooperate with Russia on an inquiry against the man behind the Magnitsky Act, William Browder. Now, a Russian lawyer claims that Browder himself arranged this petition to hide data on his operations.

Browder, a US-born British investor and the founder of Hermitage Capital Management, fears that his fraudulent investment schemes involving offshore assets in Cyprus would be revealed to European authorities if Cyprus continues to cooperate with Moscow on its probe against him, Natalya Veselnitskaya, a Russian lawyer who conducted her own investigation into Browder’s operations, told RT. She added that Browder is actively trying to paint the investigation against him as politically motivated.

“He [Browder] is afraid of the Russian probe that has conclusive evidence of his financial crimes and proof that his theory of Magnitsky’s death is an absolute fake. That’s why Browder is ready to stage any provocation,” Veselnitskaya said. She went on to say that the investor’s decision to intervene was particularly “influenced by the fact that the entire network of offshore companies that make up his organized criminal group is located on the territory of Cyprus.”

The incident that Veselnitskaya was referring to took place in late October 2017. At that time, 17 members of the European Parliament appealed to Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiades in an open letter, in which they called on him to stop assisting Russia in its investigation against Browder.

The MEPs particularly expressed their concerns over the fact that “the Cypriot government is actively assisting the Russian government in furthering human rights violations through assistance with politically motivated prosecutions, in contravention of its obligations under European conventions,” as reported by the local Cyprus Mail daily.

Even though the letter carried absolutely no legal weight and could not force Anastasiades to take any measures, the MEPs still sought to exert pressure on the Cypriot authorities by stating that “the conduct of Cyprus in this case will have implications that go far beyond this case.” The letter also explicitly stated that the investigation against Browder was of a “political nature.”

“While every other European country, Interpol and the Council of Europe have deemed the Russian proceedings against Browder to be politically motivated, your country has taken a contrary position, and agreed to provide assistance to a Russian politically-motivated process, clearly in violation of your obligations under the rule of law,” the signatories to the letter said.

Just weeks before the MEPs sent their letter to the Cypriot president, Browder himself filed a request to the court of Nicosia, asking for an emergency injunction against the transfer of any data concerning his activities in the island country to Russia. According to Veselnitskaya, the letter and the application filed by Browder were “a double gambit by the criminal union between Browder and his lawyers: an attempt to interrupt the course of the investigation and interfere in the judicial process.”

Notably, as many as 12 out of 17 European lawmakers who signed the letter, were mentioned in the so-called “Soros list” – a document prepared for the Open Society European Policy Institute, which itself is part of the Open Society Foundations run by the US investor and hedge fund manager George Soros. The document published on the Internet after the mail server of the Open Society Foundations was hacked in 2016 lists those, whom it calls “reliable allies in the European Parliament.”

The letter’s signatories who are also “reliable allies” of Soros include socialists Ana Gomes, Pier Antonio Panzeri, and Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar; member of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group Monica Macovei; liberals Maite Pagazaurtundua Ruiz, Petras Austrevicius and Fredrick Federley; greens Rebecca Harms and Judith Sargentini; and members of the European People’s Party Christofer Fjellner, Lars Adaktusson, and Gunnar Hokmark. Two more signatories to the letter are Anna Fotyga and Sandra Kalniete, former foreign ministers of Poland and Latvia respectively, known for their initiatives to “counteract Russian influence” in Europe.

In mid-October, even before the letter signed by the European lawmakers reached the Cypriot president, the Prosecution Office of Cyprus actually suspended cooperation with Russia on the investigation into the allegations against Browder. In particular, Cypriot authorities banned a Russian delegation from coming to the island in pursuit of the investigative procedures, citing the application filed by Browder, in which he claimed that the Russian investigation was politically motivated.

The Russian Foreign Ministry suspected the Cypriot authorities’ decision was influenced from abroad. “We have serious doubts regarding the legality of that decision, which was made public before the court issued a decision on Mr Browder’s action, as well as to whether Cyprus took the decision independently,” the ministry said in a statement.

Browder became known for his role in the adoption of the so-called Magnitsky Act – the 2012 US regulation that imposes sanctions on Russian individuals and companies over alleged violations of human rights. Browder actively lobbied the act in the US and then also encouraged the European countries to follow suit and also imposed sanctions on Russia over alleged human rights violations.

The investor, however, has a long history of animosity against Russia. In 2013, he was sentenced to nine years in prison in absentia for tax evasion. According to the 2013 court verdict, Browder together with his Russian auditor Sergey Magnitsky failed to pay over 552 million rubles in taxes (about $ 16 million). The businessman was also found guilty of illegally buying shares in the country’s natural gas giant Gazprom. According to the law enforcers, that cost Russia at least 3 billion rubles ($ 100 million).

Magnitsky died in pre-trial custody in 2009 after being detained as part of investigation in Browder’s fraudulent financial schemes in Russia. His death allowed Browder to present the whole case as political persecution and lobby for the adoption of the Magnitsky Act in the US.

Nobody is safe from US if Greece extradites Russia’s ‘Bitcoin mastermind’ – lawyer to RT https://briefnews.eu/nobody-is-safe-from-us-if-greece-extradites-russias-bitcoin-mastermind-lawyer-to-rt/ https://briefnews.eu/nobody-is-safe-from-us-if-greece-extradites-russias-bitcoin-mastermind-lawyer-to-rt/#respond Wed, 04 Oct 2017 20:25:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nobody-is-safe-from-us-if-greece-extradites-russias-bitcoin-mastermind-lawyer-to-rt/ No person on Earth will be safe from US persecution if Greece agrees to American demands to extradite Russian entrepreneur Aleksandr Vinnik over unsubstantiated accusations of Bitcoin fraud, Timofey Musatov, Vinnik’s lawyer, told RT.

Earlier Wednesday, a court in Thessaloniki, Greece, approved a request by American authorities to extradite Vinnik, whom the US suspects of money laundering via BTC-e and other Bitcoin trading platforms.

“The decision by the court was quite predictable – to extradite Aleksandr Vinnik to the US. The judge came up with a ruling, already knowing that it was not subject to actual execution. Therefore, [the decision] may be a called a political one,” Musatov said.

Vinnik’s defense team filed an appeal right after the extradition ruling was announced by the judge, with “an innocent man being held in handcuffs” as the procedure of submitting papers to the court registry was carried out, he said.

The Thessaloniki court hearing on the extradition of Vinnik to the US is scheduled for October 11, Musatov said.

According to the attorney, there are a number of viable reasons preventing Greece from fulfilling the American demands.

“Firstly, no evidence has been brought [by the US] to back up the charges – everything that’s stated there is of a hypothetical nature. Secondly, this crime is technically impossible at all. Thirdly, it’s impossible to link Aleksandr Vinnik to the incriminated crimes,” he explained to RT.

Musatov described the US push to extradite his client as not just “a political measure, but a military operation.”

“In fact, they [the US] took our citizen hostage, which is a precedent case for Europe. Such cases never happened before,” he said.

“If the decision of the American side is eventually satisfied (and Vinnik is extradited) then any citizen in the world could be arrested at any second on false accusations, in which there are no facts, but only assumptions – that he could commit a crime,” the lawyer explained.

He also dismissed American claims against European bitcoin exchange BTC-e, which has been accused of “working without a license.”

“A non-American company, which isn’t operating on US territory, is being accused for violating American legislation, which is also wrong,” Musatov said, adding that “were talking about an official, legal business.”

By going after Vinnik and BTC-e, the US is “restricting the freedom of doing business, violating the rights and freedoms of citizens, which are reflected in all the documents, on which European and American society is based: freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, freedom of private life, banking secrecy, freedom of entrepreneurship.”

Vinnik, who is also wanted in Russia on fraud charges, was arrested during his vacation in Greece in July at the request of the American authorities.

The US claims the Russian national had funneled at least $ 4 billion in Bitcoin through various trading platforms as part of a money laundering scheme.

Vinnik ruled out voluntary extradition to the US, maintaining that he was innocent of the crimes linked to him by the US.

The entrepreneur doesn’t object to being handed over to Russia, where he is suspected of stealing 600,000 rubles ($ 10,500) from an unidentified entity “using the means of deception and the internet.”

‘The Kids in the Hall’ May Return, Courtesy of ‘SNL’ Mastermind Lorne Michaels https://briefnews.eu/the-kids-in-the-hall-may-return-courtesy-of-snl-mastermind-lorne-michaels/ https://briefnews.eu/the-kids-in-the-hall-may-return-courtesy-of-snl-mastermind-lorne-michaels/#respond Wed, 04 Oct 2017 10:05:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-kids-in-the-hall-may-return-courtesy-of-snl-mastermind-lorne-michaels/ The Kids in the Hall Revival

When it comes to sketch comedy, most audiences are familiar with Saturday Night Live first and foremost, followed closely by Mad TV. But some audiences might remember the likes of In Living Color, The State, Upright Citizens Brigade, SCTV and The Kids in the Hall. If all goes according to plan, one of those shows might be getting some kind of revival.

The Kids in the Hall is a Canadian sketch comedy troupe who made waves from the late 1980s to mid-1990s with their live comedy tour. But they really picked up steam after getting their own self-titled television show. Now they might be able to make a comeback with a The Kids in the Hall revival series, perhaps even on Netflix.

The original iteration of The Kids in the Hall featured comedians Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson. The series aired both on HBO in the United States and CBC in Canada, but came to an end in 1995. The troupe came back together for their cult-favorite movie Brain Candy and have had reunion tours intermittently since then, with their last one being in 2010 for a miniseries revival called Death Comes to Town. Since then, the cast has still been performing, but not as a group. But that could change if longtime Saturday Night Live executive producer Lorne Michaels has his way.

Cast member Kevin McDonald (who you’ve probably seen or heard in countless TV shows and movies) was recently speaking with Florida News Press (via Uproxx) to promote one of his stand-up shows over the weekend, and he revealed that a possible revival of the sketch comedy series is in the nascent stages of development. McDonald said:

“We got a Kids in the Hall group message to all of us. Lorne Michaels wants us to do what Mr. Show did, and do like six episodes of sketches for something like Netflix.”

For those who aren’t familiar, Mr. Show with Bob & David was a sketch comedy series starring Bob Odenkirk and David Cross that also aired on HBO that ended up getting a limited series revival at Netflix. Since fans loved seeing that duo get back together, Lorne Michaels is thinking that fans of The Kids in the Hall would love to see a reunion of the comedy troupe for a limited series of their own.

As of now, it’s very early in the planning stages. Kevin McDonald said, “It’s so at the beginning, we’re not able to even get conference calls together. There’s always one or two of us that are kind of busy. And because we are who we are, there’s always one of us against it. But I think, right now, there’s no one against it. … And I’ll try to get it going, because I’m the one who’s supposed to get it going. … It’s super exciting!”

In more recent years, sketch comedy shows have focused on smaller casts, with the likes of Inside Amy Schumer, Key & Peele, The Kroll Show and Portlandia focusing on a single comedian or a duo starring in a variety of sketches. It would be nice to bring back an ensemble cast like The Kids in the Hall to shake things up a bit. In the meantime, here’s a favorite from their original series:

Trial underway of alleged mastermind of Benghazi attack https://briefnews.eu/trial-underway-of-alleged-mastermind-of-benghazi-attack/ https://briefnews.eu/trial-underway-of-alleged-mastermind-of-benghazi-attack/#respond Tue, 03 Oct 2017 00:39:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trial-underway-of-alleged-mastermind-of-benghazi-attack/

The trial of the man accused of planning the attack on the US diplomatic compound in Benghazi in 2012, killing the US Ambassador to Libya and three other Americans is underway at a US federal court.

The once anti-Gaddafi militia leader Ahmed Abu Khatallah hates America “with a vengeance” and played a leading role in organizing the September 11, 2012 attack on the US diplomatic mission in Benghazi, federal prosecutor John Crabb said in his opening statement.

Khatallah “didn’t do the killing by himself,” he said. “He didn’t light the fires and he didn’t fire the mortars but you will hear he is just as guilty as the men who lit those fires.”

Crabb told the jury they would hear from witnesses who heard Khatallah discuss his plans. One of them heard Khatallah say he “would have killed all of the Americans that night,” Crabb said. That witness was later paid $ 7 million to help the United States lure Khatallah to the spot where he was captured, Reuters reported.

Khatallah’s defense attorney said his client had nothing to do with the planning of the attack and went to the compound to see what was happening. The attorney also argued that some of the government’s witnesses “are people who lie” and that his client’s statements to the FBI were never recorded and may have been incorrectly translated.

Khatallah, 46, who faces 18 US federal charges including murder and providing material support to terrorists, was wearing headphones during the trial to hear Arabic translation of the proceedings.

The Libyan has been held at a detention center in Alexandria, Virginia for three years following his capture by a team of US military and FBI officials in Libya in 2014.

Khatallah commanded a small militia during the 2011 uprising against Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi. The Obama administration at the time backed anti-Gaddafi forces and helped to kill the Libyan leader later that year.

The attack on the Benghazi compound the following year lasted over eight hours during which US government personnel repeatedly called for help. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans — Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty — were killed in the assault.

The Obama administration’s response to the attack became the matter of a congressional investigation which entangled then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

It was revealed that top administration officials knew that it was a pre-planned terrorist attack when they initially told the public that it happened as a result of a spontaneous demonstration over an anti-Muslim video.

David Davis MP: British blunderer or Brexit mastermind? https://briefnews.eu/david-davis-mp-british-blunderer-or-brexit-mastermind/ https://briefnews.eu/david-davis-mp-british-blunderer-or-brexit-mastermind/#respond Fri, 08 Sep 2017 14:46:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/david-davis-mp-british-blunderer-or-brexit-mastermind/ He is playing a winner’s game, and will drive Britain to the edge of greatness – or he’s about to bring the nation crashing out of the EU with no trade deal and bad blood between the UK and the bloc.

David Davis MP has insisted he is seeing success in Brussels, and marching forward with a deal which will better Britain’s global standing.

The problem is, right now, he seems to be the only one saying it.
On the other side of the divorce table, his counterparts have been increasingly critical – while on home turf, support appears to be fading.

Britons are growing tired of the near constant veil of secrecy as the Brexit boss’ answers direct questions ambiguously on what exactly his department is aiming for in talks.

The strategy of the Brexit team has been kept quiet, and as the 2019 deadline approaches, tensions are running high.

The Brexit secretary has been branded “unstable” and “lazy” “clueless” and in one harsh outburst – “thick as mince” – while supporters have insisted his constant question dodging is giving Britain the upper hand.

“Unstable”

Minutes from a meeting of the European Commission in July, which emerged this week, revealed Jean-Claude Juncker questioned the “stability” of David Davis.

The EC president went further, insisting Davis’ personal performance “risked jeopardising the success of the negotiations” of Britain and Brussels.

Top EU officials – including Juncker – questioned the minister’s “priorities” as the first round of negotiations got underway.

“He noted in this regard that David Davis, the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, did not regard his direct involvement in these negotiations as his priority and there was also a possibility that he might not be present at the full opening session of the July cycle of talks,” the minutes said.

“Thick as mince”

One of the most cutting outbursts since negotiations began came from the leader of the Vote Leave campaign.

Dominic Cummings called David Davis “thick as mince” and “lazy as a toad” as he slammed changes to the Great Repeal Bill – now the EU (Withdrawal) Bill.

The draft which is being debated in Parliament sets out how ministers can adapt EU laws into the UK post-Brexit.

However, opposition campaigners say it will give the Tories the ability to change law as they please.

Critics also claim Davis has left the door open for Downing Street to pull a U-turn and cave to EU demands at the 11th hour.

“Three-day working week”

Former employee James Chapman, who worked at the Department for Exiting the European Union (DExEU), launched a scathing attack on his ex-boss last month, hot on the heels of comments from Cummings.

The ex-DExEU man said Davis works a “three-day-week” and has Nigel Farage “on speed dial” – implying he could be taking direction from the former leader of UKIP when it comes to Brexit.

The comments were later denied by Davis.

“Impossible” demands

After four days of talks which ended in a deadlock, a week ago, the EU’s Brexit chief, Michel Barnier, delivered his most scathing attack on Davis to date.

“The UK wants to take back control, wants to adopt its own standards and regulations, but it also wants to have these standards recognised automatically in the EU,” Barnier told a news conference.

“This is simply impossible. You cannot be outside the single market and shape its legal order.”

Barnier accused the UK of being “unrealistic” as the sides failed to agree on a final settlement for the split as the EU demands Britain meets its financial obligations.

However, it was leaked plans for immigration which caused the biggest wave of anger across Britain.

The leaked 82-page document revealed the Tories could bring in a cap for low skilled workers and introduce skills ‘tests’ to decide whether an EU migrant is worthy of a place in Britain.

A minimum income threshold could be brought in under plans from Davis’ team, as well as Britain having the right to send people home after two years, and give them ID cards.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan called the plans a “blueprint on how to strangle London’s economy” on Twitter.

Pit-stop visits

The Brexit secretary’s Brussels schedule baffled ministers in July when he spent just minutes in a meeting with Brexit chief for the EU, Michel Barnier.

His lightning quick trip drew criticism from across Britain but the Department for Exiting the EU played down insistence Davis was “unprepared.”

Davis, who was first elected in 1987, has faced a barrage of criticism, yet fans claim he is keeping up a play of “constructed ambiguity” to dodge being backed into a corner by Brussels.

He has 18 months to prove them right.

The Russo Brothers Will Direct Noah Hawley’s New FX Series ‘The Mastermind’ https://briefnews.eu/the-russo-brothers-will-direct-noah-hawleys-new-fx-series-the-mastermind/ https://briefnews.eu/the-russo-brothers-will-direct-noah-hawleys-new-fx-series-the-mastermind/#respond Tue, 18 Jul 2017 19:58:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-russo-brothers-will-direct-noah-hawleys-new-fx-series-the-mastermind/ new noah hawley series

The creator of FX’s Fargo, Noah Hawley, and the filmmakers behind Captain America: Civil War, Joe and Anthony Russo, are teaming up for a new FX series called The Mastermind. The Russo Brothers will direct the series and executive produce along with Hawley. The creator of The Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman, and his Skybound Entertainment is producing the series, which is based on a true story.

Below, learn more about the new Noah Hawley series.

According to Variety, The Mastermind is based on Atavist Magazine co-founder and CEO Evan Ratliff‘s investigative stories. Hawley and the Russo brothers are adapting his story “The Mastermind,” which is a long series of stories about Paul Le Roux. Le Roux was a computer programmer and criminal cartel boss who became an informant for the DEA. He trafficked guns and laundered money, and was into gold smuggling and an online pharmacy. His activities extended to Hong Kong, Africa, Colombia, and Brazil.

Hong Kong was kind of the epicenter of his operation. It’s a long, crazy story, tough to summarize, but he was also suspected of murder, smuggling pure North Korean meth into the states, and having something to do with a yacht carrying $ 120 million worth of cocaine and a corpse. Le Roux also had an enforcer named Joseph “Rambo” Hunter, who was once a sniper and drill sergeant for the United States army. Le Roux’s wild crime story sounds right up Hawley’s alley.

When the Russo Brothers will fit The Mastermind into their schedule is unknown at the moment. They’re busy with Avengers: Infinity War, and they still have to shoot the sequel due out the following year. The Happy Endings executive producers have been working on some exciting television projects lately, including Henry Sellick’s (Coraline) adaptation of the game Little Nightmares and Hulu’s remake of The Warriors. Both shows are projects to keep your fingers crossed for, especially The Warriors, which, from what I’ve heard, sounds like a very promising and unexpected take on Walter Hill’s classic.

Hawley is, of course, a busy storyteller as well. After wrapping up another splendid season of Fargo, he’s in the midst of piecing together another season of his highly imaginative FX series, Legion. He has a few other projects to bounce around as well. He’s working on an adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle, an adaptation of his novel Before The Fall, and he’s also a part of the writers’ room for the Universal Monsters universe.

‘Mastermind’ of Tehran terrorist attacks killed by Iranian security forces https://briefnews.eu/mastermind-of-tehran-terrorist-attacks-killed-by-iranian-security-forces/ https://briefnews.eu/mastermind-of-tehran-terrorist-attacks-killed-by-iranian-security-forces/#respond Sun, 11 Jun 2017 01:10:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mastermind-of-tehran-terrorist-attacks-killed-by-iranian-security-forces/

Iran’s security forces have killed the alleged mastermind of Wednesday’s terrorist attacks. The twin assault claimed 17 lives when four armed assailants raided the country’s Parliament while a suicide bomber struck at the Imam Khomeini Mausoleum.

“The mastermind and main commander of terrorist attacks on the parliament and Mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini was killed today by the security forces,” intelligence minister Mahmoud Alavi was quoted as saying by the Tasnim news agency, Reuters reports.

The suspected orchestrator of the attack, who has not been named, was tracked down by Iranian intelligence after he had fled the country amid the ongoing crackdown by government forces.

Acting in cooperation with “friendly foreign intelligence services,” the Iranian team killed the suspect on Saturday, PressTV reported, citing the minister.

Two guards, ten government staffers and five civilians were killed in the Wednesday attacks which targeted the country’s parliament and shrine of the late founder of Iran, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Fifty-two others were injured in the attacks, according to the Interior Ministry.

Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorist group claimed responsibility for the deadly operation and threatened more attacks against Iran’s Shiite majority, triggering a massive manhunt for IS followers by Tehran.

Authorities said Saturday that they identified and arrested an IS-affiliated cell of some 60 members in the suburb of Tehran, Iran’s IRNA news agency reported.

“The terrorists were affiliated to the Wahabi and Takfiri groups who joined the Daesh terrorist group overseas and were red handed in the crimes of the terrorist group in Mosul, Iraq and Raqqah in Syria,” Commander of the Law Enforcement Force Brigadier General Hossein Ashtari said.

Authorities also announced the detention of eight suspects in the Alborz province, north of Tehran.

A day earlier, the Intelligence Ministry said they detained 41 members of the “Wahhabi IS group,” in Tehran and the western Kurdish provinces.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on Friday that terrorist attacks would only increase Tehran’s hatred against the US and its “stooges” such as Saudi Arabia. The comments come just a day after Alavi said investigators were working to determine whether Riyadh had a hand in the attacks.

‘Air cocaine’ mastermind transferred to France over health scare https://briefnews.eu/air-cocaine-mastermind-transferred-to-france-over-health-scare/ https://briefnews.eu/air-cocaine-mastermind-transferred-to-france-over-health-scare/#respond Sat, 10 Jun 2017 14:14:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/air-cocaine-mastermind-transferred-to-france-over-health-scare/

A Frenchman serving 20 years in jail over the ‘Air Cocaine’ plot to smuggle a planeload of drugs out of the Dominican Republic has flown home to France to undergo surgery to save his leg from amputation after being hit by a motorcycle while on bail.

Alain Castany was one of four co-conspirators arrested at an airport in the Dominican Republic city of Punta Cana on March 19, 2013, in a plot that implicated members of France’s upper political echelons.

Dubbed ‘Air Cocaine,’ Castany and his accessories loaded a small jet with 700kg (1,500lbs) of the drug, but were apprehended shortly before takeoff, reports the Local.

The men were all convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2015, but were placed under house arrest in the Dominican Republic pending an appeal.

The plot thickened in October 2015 when the two convicted ‘Air Cocaine’ pilots, Pascal Fauret and Bruno Odos, were picked up by a speed boat in Santo Domingo and taken to the French West Indies.

Their companions on board the boat were leading members of France’s National Front party – Aymeric Chauprade and Pierre Malinowski a parliamentary assistant to both Chauprade and the party’s founder Jean-Marie Le Pen, the Irish Times reported at the time.

The pilots held a press conference in Paris on October 27, 2015, to plead their innocence, but were arrested by French authorities soon after.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was also briefly embroiled in the investigation as he was scheduled to use the same private jet just two days after the men were arrested.

Sarkozy’s phone records were also examined, but no connection to the ‘Air Cocaine’ plot was found.

The public prosecutor’s office in Marseille called for the four co-conspirators and seven other suspects involved in the case to be handed over to the court in Bouches-du-Rhone, reports the Local.

Another alleged conspirator, French aviation security expert Christophe Naudin, was extradited from Egypt to the Dominican Republic as part of the investigation.
