When is a Masked Singer wild card not a wild card? When he’s actually host Nick Cannon, pulling a fast one on judges and the audience alike! That’s precisely what took place in Wednesday’s episode, when a wild card contestant named Bulldog wound up getting the short end of the fetching stick: He was chosen by fill-in host Niecy Nash to be unmasked, leaving Crab, Piglet, Black Swan and Chameleon safe for another week. (Read a full recap of the episode.) And when the golden dog’s head came off, he was revealed to be Cannon, returned from his quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19 just before the start of the season. Ahead of Episode 5 on Wednesday (Fox, 8/7c) we’ve gathered what we believe are the most important clues from the premiere and consolidated them into a handy guide. The goal: Figure out who’s beneath those costumes far before their unveilings. All season long, we’ll update the gallery at right — go to it directly here — with information gleaned from this week’s show, and we’ll add our (and some of your) thoughts about who’s beneath the costumes. So make sure to log your thoughts, theories and evolving guesses in the comments section! As much as we mocked The Masked Singer‘s (over)use of the phrase “game changing,” we’ve got to hand it to the reality series: The wild card contestants really are shaking things up — in a fun way — in Season 5. Exhibit A: Crab’s entrance in Wednesday’s episode, much like Orca’s the week before, injected a lot of energy into an already strong hour and leveled up the competition for the current contestants. Crab was added to the mix that included Black Swan, Piglet, Chameleon and Grandpa Monster, and by the end of the episode, Grandpa Monster was asked to go home. When he was unmasked, Grandpa Monster was revealed to be controversial YouTuber Logan Paul. (Read a full recap.) So we’re slightly ashamed that we didn’t realize that Danny Trejo — whom you may know from TV shows as varied as The Flash, From Dusk Til Dawn: The Series and Sons of Anarchy — was underneath Raccoon’s furry head.
We got Trejo on the phone Wednesday to talk about his Masked adventure, which ended with this week’s episode, and how it served as a tribute to a certain Aerosmith lead singer’s stint on a certain Chuck Lorre sitcom.
TVLINE | So, hold on: I also cover American Gods for our site. And this thought occurred to me about that show during your guest-star appearance this season, too: Do you have a checklist of every series currently on television, and you’re like, “I’m going to do that one. I’m going to do that one. I’m going to do that one?”
[Laughs loudly] I’m so blessed. I have been so blessed. I was working through the pandemic. I don’t know how. I was doing voiceovers. I’ve done every cartoon on television. That was great, because work was so hard. And I don’t know why actors don’t like doing… [shouts to someone in background] What do they call them, Mikey? [Mikey: “Cameos.”] Cameos! I love ’em! You can be in your boxer shorts and just like, “Hi, Bob, your wife, Carol, wants to wish you a happy anniversary, because you’re a great guy!” [Laughs] So me and Mikey, my assistant, we try to do 10 or 15 a night! It’s great!
TVLINE | How did you become involved with The Masked Singer? Did they come to you? Did you reach out to them?
My agent said, “Have you seen The Masked Singer?” I’m working, so I don’t see a lot of TV. I’ve seen it a few times. It’s a really cute show. He said, “Well, do you want to try it?” I said, “Sure!” Then, when I saw the costume, the Raccoon, I have a dog John Wesley Harding, he’s a little schnauzer, he looks exactly like that. The same features! I was like, “Yeah, that’s my dog! John Wesley Harding!” So even though they thought I was playing a raccoon, I was playing my dog.
TVLINE | Talk to me about your song selection.
“Wild Thing” I didn’t know. I knew a little bit of “Ring of Fire.” I loved Johnny Cash, because he sang at Folsom [Prison]. “Wild Thing,” remember the guy from Aerosmith, Steven Tyler? I heard him in a TV show, Two and a Half Men, and he was bothering Charlie Sheen. He was practicing and he was just screaming. I said, “OK, I’ll do it like that.” [Laughs] I was channeling Steven Tyler from Aerosmith.

Phoenix, you flew too close to the sun.
This week’s Masked Singer saw the introduction — and then, swiftly, the departure — of a competitor dressed like one of the fiery birds of myth. And when Phoenix was separated from its crowning plumage, we found out that Olympic gold medalist Caitlyn Jenner was responsible for Phoenix’s regal strut (and pitch-adjacent rendition of Kesha’s “Tik Tok”).
The Group B premiere also served up our first looks at new competitors Grandpa Monster, Black Swan, Chameleon and Piglet — a few of whom gave some very solid performances, and at least one of whom we’re pretty sure we already know. (Read a full recap of the premiere here.)
Now, ahead of Episode 3 on Wednesday (Fox, 8/7c) — which is when the wild card contestants will come into play, by the way — we’ve gathered what we believe are the most important clues from the premiere and consolidated them into a handy guide.

The Masked Singer is back for another season, and you know what that means: It’s time to put on your who-could-possibly-be-under-those-giant-foam-heads hats!
Wednesday’s premiere introduced us to five of Season 5’s competitors: Russian Doll, Seashell, Raccoon, Snail and Porcupine Robopine. And even before this “game-changing” season started in on its twists — aka the previously announced wild card contestants, who will join the game in future episodes — we got our first surprise: Russian Doll is actually Russian Dolls, with at least two (but maybe three) people singing inside the lacquered costumes.
Though Raccoon gave a performance that was way off pitch and devoid of rhythm, Snail was chosen to go home at the end of the episode. And when the mollusk was unmasked, he was revealed to be Kermit the Frog! (Read a full recap of the premiere here.)
Before Episode 2 airs Wednesday (Fox, 8/7c), we’ve gathered what we believe are the most important clues from the premiere and consolidated them into a handy guide. The goal: Figure out who’s beneath those costumes far before their unveilings.

The Masked Singer is getting all dolled up for Season 5 — and here’s a sneak peek performance to prove it.
One of the competitors in the upcoming season of Fox’s bizarre singing competition is Russian Doll, whose costume only allows for the most minimal of movements — a marionette-style mouth with a lower jaw that opens and closes.
You can get a good look at the… innovative new Masked Singer entry via the full performance below, which Fox released Tuesday. In the clip, Russian Doll and a friend perform “Shallow,” the Grammy- and Oscar-winning Lady Gaga-Bradley Cooper ballad. (You truly have not lived until you’ve seen that little mouth flap up and down to all the “la-la-laaaa”s.)
In addition to the previously announced addition of wildcard contestants in this season’s gameplay, Fox on Tuesday also introduced Cluedle-Doo (as seen below), a giant rooster who’ll mess with the judges and offer new clues about the players’ identities.

The Masked Singer returns for Season 5 on Wednesday, March 10 at 8/7c. Niecy Nash (Claws) will guest-host the first few episodes, as a result of regular emcee Nick Cannon testing positive for COVID-19 in early February.

Since the recording was completed on the show, Joss has given birth to a baby daughter called Violet, who was delivered on February 1, 2021.
This is the first child the international music star has welcomed into the world with her boyfriend Cody DaLuz, 31.
It was during an appearance on her Cooking With Joss series on Facebook the singer revealed the news to the world.
“I have a very special little bun I’ve been making for about nine months. It’s cooked, it’s ready,” she began.
“Here’s one we made earlier. She’s so sweet. This is Violet. She’s was breach so she had to have a C-section which was delightful.
“They had to take her out of the sunroof. It was quick. We didn’t know she was a girl until that moment.”

Fans were certain Robin was between JLS star Aston Merrygold and X Factor singer Olly Murs.
Other guesses as to who was behind the majestic Robin included Nicky Byrne and Jake Wood.
On hearing the news one fan said: “@astonmerrygold just knew it was you! Congratulations you were amazing.”
Fans were thrilled to see former contestants Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Mel B, Glenn Hoddle, Martine McCutcheon, John Thomson, Lenny Henry, Morten Harket, Sue Perkins and Gabrielle return.
All 12 contestants gave a star-studded performance to gear fans up for the final big reveals.
The official Twitter account teased the final episode, saying: “Tonight, no more secrets. The truth is revealed.”

Only five anonymous celebrities remain in The Masked Dancer‘s competition — and if our prediction is correct, this isn’t the first time Cotton Candy has been part of an elite Final Five.
After her three impressive dance routines on the Fox series thus far, we feel confident in our guess that the petite Cotton Candy is Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas, who was a member of the 2016 gymnastics team in Rio de Janeiro known as the Final Five.
But even though The Masked Dancer‘s judges have guessed Douglas’ former teammate Simone Biles as the athlete under Cotton Candy’s multicolored head, they have yet to suggest Douglas herself. On the other hand, the panel has thrown out some names for Exotic Bird and Zebra that match up perfectly with our current guesses, and Paula Abdul recently joined the Spot-On Guesses Club with her prediction of Brian McKnight in Episode 4. (Your time will come, Ashley Tisdale. We think.)
Ahead of the next episode on Wednesday, Feb. 3 (8/7c), we’ve gathered all the latest clues about the remaining contestants, along with the celebrities we strongly suspect are beneath all that padding. Scroll through the attached gallery (or click here for direct access) to review all the intel, then drop a comment with your best guesses!

Eight celebrities remain in the race to keep their identity hidden on The Masked Singer. Badger, Robin, Sausage, Blob, Bush Baby, Harlequin, Viking and Dragon performed for judges Rita Ora, Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross and Mo Gilligan. Those watching at home hoped the extra clues will help them identify who is behind the costumes. But there is one act viewers are still incredibly confused about: Dragon.
Dragon has proved themselves to be one of the trickier contestants on this year’s edition of The Masked Singer on ITV.
The clues they have been giving out have left fans and judges mostly in disagreement up until this point.
Some of the names that have cropped up so far are those of Susan Calman and Michelle Visage.
However it seems that Dragon has been unmasked on Instagram as Courtney Act.

The Drag Race star was tagged on Instagram in a post by the manufacturer of the fabric for the Dragon costume, revealing that it’s her hiding under the mask.
The account for Funki Fabrics posted a picture of the Masked Singer character on their profile, saying how the costume uses their textured mermaid scale fabric, and in it they tagged Courtney’s account.
Some fans seem to believe that this was no accident, and the manufacturers have insight on who is performing under the costume they helped make.
Performing the song live on stage with fellow Drag Race pal Adore Delano, the drag performer – real name Shane Jenek – sounded identical to Dragon’s debut, said many fans.
Courtney is known for her singing talents, famously appearing on the first season of Australian Idol in 2003.
The rainbow belly on the Dragon costume could also be a nod to the LGBTQ+ community and therefore be a further clue leading to Courtney.
Many fans though would disagree, placing their bets for Dragon on other celebrities.
Michelle recently appeared on Lorraine and teased fans about it being her masquerading behind the Dragon. “Wait and see” she told fans.
Susan was also forced to address the rumours that she might be hiding under the mask while on Lorraine.
“This is the most flattering rumour I think that’s ever been spread,” she said.
“I’m not,” she denied. “But my goodness thank you for thinking I was.”
The Masked Singer continues on ITV on Saturday at 7pm.
