It appears that Disney+‘s Secret Invasion has found one of its leaders, in Kingsley Ben-Adir.

Announced in December during the Walt Disney Company’s Investor Day 2020, the live-action Marvel series stars MCU vet Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury while Captain Marvel‘s Ben Mendelsohn will reprise his role as the shapeshifting Skrull named Talos. The project, based on the 2008 Marvel Comics crossover of the same name, follows a sect of Skrulls who have infiltrated all aspects of life on Earth.

Though unconfirmed by Marvel Studios or Disney+, our sister site Deadline is reporting that Ben-Adir — whose TV credits include The OA, Peaky Blinders, High Fidelity and The Comey Rule (playing President Barack Obama) — has been cast as a lead villain.

Ben-Adir of course also played Malcolm X in the acclaimed feature film One Night in Miami…, which just netted Academy Award nominations for Supporting Actor Leslie Odom Jr., Adapted Screenplay and Original Song (“Speak Now”).

TVLine’s #2020FirstLook series continues with an exclusive still photo from the ABC drama’s final season premiere (which was screened for a lucky few at D23 in August, and will hit everyone else’s screens in Summer 2020). In the photo, the new version of Coulson — who was fashioned using a blend of LMD and Chronicom tech — along with Daisy, Mack and Deke, have donned period-appropriate garb to carry out their mission, in the year 1931.

When last we tuned in, Daisy, May et al — after vanquishing Izel and Sarge aka Pachakutiq — were met by Jemma, who used a tricked-out Zephyr to time-jump everyone to safety just before Chronicom hunters obliterated the Mayan temple. But to where did an offsite Fitz send them? The question was actually, “To when,” as we saw the Zephyr approach a New York City where the Empire State Building is just finishing construction. Jemma then revealed that with the Chronicom hunters in possession of Fury’s “black box,” they needed someone who truly knows S.H.I.E.L.D. So, through a merging of Chronicom tech and archival data, they created “the ultimate LMD,” in the form of a suit-and-tie wearing Coulson.

In a previously released Season 7 promo (embedded below), a band of Chronicom hunters is seen storming an old-timey cop shop. We then cut to a series of quick clips, of “Coulson 2.0,” and Daisy warming up to him; a poolside murder; Enoch sprinting toward the Zephyr before it “jumps” away; a rocket launch from the seized Lighthouse; and a brief glimpse of a HYDRA logo.

Speaking with TVLine after the penultimate season finale, S.H.I.E.L.D. co-showrunner Jed Whedon said the team’s final, timey-wimey mission is “to preserve the history that we’ve grown to know and love on our show. It’s a way for us to look back at everything we’ve done and talk about the history of S.H.I.E.L.D. as we bring the show to its final chapter.” The cast, meanwhile, said in their final TVLine Comic-Con video Q&A that the series finale will be “beautiful, in a sad way.”

Marvel’s Jessica Jones Final Season Premiere Recap: Holding Out for a Hero https://briefnews.eu/marvels-jessica-jones-final-season-premiere-recap-holding-out-for-a-hero/ https://briefnews.eu/marvels-jessica-jones-final-season-premiere-recap-holding-out-for-a-hero/#respond Sat, 15 Jun 2019 09:52:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/marvels-jessica-jones-final-season-premiere-recap-holding-out-for-a-hero/

RELATED STORIES

For Marvel’s Jessica Jones, the five stages of grief look a lot like this: whiskey, whiskey, whiskey, whiskey and whiskey. (There’s certainly some anger and denial in there, too — but acceptance is a long way off.)

The Netflix drama dropped its third and final season on Friday, bringing the streamer’s partnership with Marvel TV to an end. And when Season 3 begins, Jessica is trying to process a loss of her own: the recent death of her mother, Alisa Jones, at the hands of ex-BFF Trish Walker.

Before Alisa was shot and killed in the sophomore finale, she had tried to convince Jessica that being a hero is merely “giving a s—t and doing something about it.” That’s why, when we first see Jessica in the Season 3 premiere, she’s attempting to do a good deed: locating a young girl who has been taken out of the country by her father, who recently lost custody of her. Jessica successfully tracks down the man and his daughter in Mexico, but he’s not willing to bring the girl back to her mother — and when he threatens Jessica with physical violence, she tosses him across the beach like he’s an empty bottle headed for the recycling bin. (Unfortunately for Jessica, a random beachgoer catches the beatdown on camera, and she’s now gone viral.)

Suffice it to say, being a hero — or living up to her mom’s definition of it, at least — isn’t going so well for our girl. And she’s got other issues, too: She’s hired a new secretary at Alias Investigations who she seems to despise, and Jeri Hogarth (whose ALS symptoms are starting to worsen) practically begs Jessica to euthanize her with pills once the disease eventually gets out of control.

But the problem that takes up most of Jessica’s time in the premiere is Trish’s sudden disapperance. Trish’s mom, Dorothy, shows up at Alias Investigations, begging Jessica to find Trish now that she’s been missing for 24 hours. Jessica adamantly refuses at first — and it doesn’t help that Dorothy thinks Trish had “nothing to do” with the death of Jessica’s mother.

Jessica Jones Season 3As you might expect, though, Trish’s whereabouts seem to weigh on Jessica, and she later agrees to help Dorothy find her. Not long into the investigation, Jessica discovers an apartment that Trish seemed to be using to spy on someone. “But what is she looking for? And who is she watching?” Jessica wonders. Later that night, she gets her answer: She watches from the window as Trish follows a man into his apartment building across the street, dressed like a burglar. Once inside the dude’s pad, though, Trish sets off the security alarm, and the man comes out into the kitchen to find Trish preparing to steal something from him. He opens a nearby cabinet and pulls out a gun — and just before he can shoot Trish with it, Jessica comes crashing through his apartment window, shielding Trish from the bullets until the man eventually leaves. (During the scuffle, Jessica discovers that Trish has powers, which comes as a very unpleasant surprise.)

Trish, however, isn’t all that grateful for Jessica’s help. When the man fled from his apartment after firing off a couple shots, he also took a sculpture from his cabinet that would have linked him to an assault, if Trish had been able to get her hands on it. But thanks to Jessica’s intervention, both the man and the sculpture are gone — and Trish says she wanted to set off the alarm in the apartment so that he’d reach for his gun and open the cabinet where the sculpture was stored. “I don’t need you to be a hero. Nobody does,” Trish informs Jessica. “I’ve got it covered.”

Later, Jessica goes to a bar and drinks away her Trish-related troubles. While there, she hits it off with a guy named Eric, and they soon return to Jessica’s apartment for dinner and, ahem, dessert. But just as things are getting hot and heavy between them, there’s a knock at Jessica’s door. She only answers it because it might be Vido, the son of Jessica’s neighbor and Season 2 flame, Oscar. (Speaking of which: What happened to Oscar? I know he’s on Manifest now, but I thought they’d be a real thing!)

When Jessica opens the door, though, it’s not Vido who greets her: It’s a masked man who stabs Jessica in the stomach, then runs out of the apartment building before she can fight back much. Jessica collapses to the floor, bleeding quite a bit, as her neighbor/estranged friend Malcolm calls the police.

With that, I hand it over to you. What did you think of Jessica Jones‘ Season 3 premiere? Grade the episode in our poll below, then drop a comment with your full reviews!

Meet Maria Rambeau: Captain Marvel’s Lashana Lynch introduces her high-flying Air Force pilot

Lashana Lynch plays Maria Rambeau, an Air Force fighter pilot who flew alongside Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers for years. The two women have a deep-rooted friendship, and while Carol may be the one with superpowers, Maria is a force to be reckoned with too. She is also a single mother to a young daughter named Monica—a name that should set off alarm bells for comic fans. Get more details in our interview with Lynch.

We here at Ars were quite pleased with the vastly improved second season of Iron Fist, arguably the least popular of all the Netflix Defenders series. The writing and fight choreography were better in season 2, the characters and their relations were more fully developed, and it had a thematically interesting premise in its exploration of the nature of power. Plus it ended with one hell of a plot twist.

So we were looking forward to how the writers built on all that in season 3. Alas, Netflix has abruptly canceled the series, informing the cast just a few hours after the odd decision, Deadline reports. It’s the first time the axe has fallen for one of the Netflix Defenders series.

Here is the joint statement from Netflix and Marvel in full:

Marvel’s ‘Runaways’ returns to Hulu December 21st https://briefnews.eu/marvels-runaways-returns-to-hulu-december-21st/ https://briefnews.eu/marvels-runaways-returns-to-hulu-december-21st/#respond Tue, 14 Aug 2018 00:05:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/marvels-runaways-returns-to-hulu-december-21st/

Hulu has announced that the second season of Marvel’s Runaways will premiere December 21st, Deadline reports. And there won’t be any weekly installments this time around as there were with the first season because all 13 episodes are getting dropped at once. Hulu renewed the series for a second season just as the first one wrapped up.

Season 2 will kick off right where the first ended — with the kids having escaped their evil parents and setting out their own. Now they’ll have to figure out how to live with each other, how to take care of themselves and how to take down their parents’ nefarious Pride squad. But they might also have to sniff out a mole since someone’s sending the Pride leader mysterious messages. Meanwhile, the Pride is bound and determined to get them back.

Amy Sherman-Palladino Marvels at Mrs. Maisel's 14 Emmy Nods: 'Why Are They Letting Me Into the Club?!' https://briefnews.eu/amy-sherman-palladino-marvels-at-mrs-maisels-14-emmy-nods-why-are-they-letting-me-into-the-club/ https://briefnews.eu/amy-sherman-palladino-marvels-at-mrs-maisels-14-emmy-nods-why-are-they-letting-me-into-the-club/#respond Fri, 13 Jul 2018 12:43:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amy-sherman-palladino-marvels-at-mrs-maisels-14-emmy-nods-why-are-they-letting-me-into-the-club/

“This is ridiculous,” Amy Sherman-Palladino declares to TVLine just hours after her Amazon dramedy, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, nabbed 14 Emmy nominations, including for Outstanding Comedy Series. “Why are they letting me into the club?!”

It’s a fair question considering it’s been nearly three decades since they (i.e. Emmy voters) gifted the Gilmore Girls auteur with her first and only Emmy nod (for co-writing a Season 4 episode of Roseanne). Below, AS-P took a few minutes away from shooting Mrs. Maisel’s upcoming second season to reflect on the series’ impressive Emmy haul, among other topics.

TVLINE | So, you’re going to the Emmys.
I’m going to make such a scene. [Laughs]

TVLINE | What do you remember about your first date with Emmy in 1992?
I wore Vivienne Westwood. And we were up against, like, four Seinfelds and six Murphy Browns. And we lost immediately and then we had to sit there for six hours. It was a very overwhelming experience. It was my second year in the business and I was still like, “Do I still want to be a writer?”

TVLINE | And then you were overlooked for the entire run of Gilmore Girls…
And Lauren Graham and Kelly Bishop…

TVLINE | You joke about getting invited back to the club. How does it feel for the show to be honored with 14 nominations?
This is a very big show. If any one piece of this show falters, the whole thing crumbles in on itself. And we have so many unbelievably talented people here… and everyone is working at their highest possible level, so I’m really happy about that…But I never felt like you should judge your work or your job by how many parties you get to go to.

TVLINE | Do you still want to find a role for Lauren on Mrs. Maisel?
Yes. it’s got to be the right thing and it’s got to be worthy of her. I bow down to Lauren. I want to work with her again so badly, but it’s got to be the right thing.

TVLINE | Who is Zachary Levi playing in Season 2 of Mrs. Maisel?
He’s going to play someone very tall. I had no idea how tall Zachary Levi was until he showed up to the table read. He is a tall, strapping man.

TVLINE | Any news on a second Gilmore Girls revival?
There’s been absolutely no talk about it.

TVLINE | What are you going to do today to celebrate?
We’re working. I’m headed back on set right now.

TVLINE | Are you gonna at least put out some cupcakes?
I don’t know! [Laughs] I have 30 pages to bust out today before our table read on Tuesday!

Steve Ditko, Co-Creator of Marvel’s Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, Has Died at 90 https://briefnews.eu/steve-ditko-co-creator-of-marvels-spider-man-and-doctor-strange-has-died-at-90/ https://briefnews.eu/steve-ditko-co-creator-of-marvels-spider-man-and-doctor-strange-has-died-at-90/#respond Sat, 07 Jul 2018 12:35:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/steve-ditko-co-creator-of-marvels-spider-man-and-doctor-strange-has-died-at-90/ Steve Ditko dead

The comics world has lost a titan of the industry. Steve Ditko, the artist responsible for co-creating iconic Marvel Comics characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange alongside Stan Lee, has died. He was 90 years old.

The Hollywood Reporter spoke with the New York Police Department and got confirmation that Ditko was found dead in his apartment on June 29, though authorities believe he actually died two days before that. No cause of death was listed (though, again, he was 90), and he left behind no known survivors.

Ditko began training under Batman artist Jerry Robinson and became famous for his work at Marvel Comics, where he helped create characters like Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Sandman, and The Lizard – all of whom have appeared in movies over the years. But despite the resurgence in popularity of those characters over the past couple of decades, Ditko didn’t participate in any press for any of the Marvel Studios films. He was famously reclusive, rarely speaking publicly since the 1970s even though he continued to work in the comics industry for decades after that.

When Marvel’s editor in chief Stan Lee didn’t like artist Jack Kirby’s take on Spider-Man in 1961, he appointed Ditko to take over as the artist. “One of the first things I did was to work up a costume,” Ditko once said in an interview. “A vital, visual part of the character. I had to know how he looked…before I did any breakdowns. For example: A clinging power so he wouldn’t have hard shoes or boots, a hidden wrist-shooter versus a web gun and holster, etc…I wasn’t sure Stan would like the idea of covering the character’s face but I did it because it hid an obviously boyish face. It would also add mystery to the character….”

THR says that Ditko began receiving plot credit in addition to his artist credit beginning with issue number 25 of The Amazing Spider-Man, and his run on the comic ended with issue No. 38. He co-created Doctor Strange in 1963, and stayed on until 1966. But that’s when he finally had enough of his collaboration with Lee:

After that, Ditko left Marvel Comics over a fight with Lee, the causes of which have always remained murky. The pair had not been on speaking terms for several years. Ditko never explained his side and Lee claimed not to really know what motivated Ditko’s exit. The best explanation suggests Ditko was frustrated at Lee’s oversight and his failure to properly share credit for Ditko’s contributions to Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. The charismatic Lee was always the face of Marvel Comics but Ditko (and Jack Kirby) thought Lee was more interested in self-promotion than selling the company and in the process implied that he deserved the lion’s share of the credit for creating the characters in the Marvel Universe.

By drawing Doctor Strange’s psychedelic world and Spider-Man’s streamlined design, he effectively changed the way superheroes were depicted forever by showing off how they could be anything and everything. The guy was a true legend in his field.

After that initial stint at Marvel, Ditko moved to DC Comics (where he co-created characters like The Question and Captain Atom), Charlton Comics, and a handful of other smaller labels, before eventually returning to freelance for Marvel once again. In 1992, Ditko co-created Squirrel Girl, who has since become a beloved fan favorite character.

RIP Steve Ditko
