Death in Paradise is going to be returning for its ninth series in January next year where new arrival Detective Neville Parker (played by Ralf Little) will be taking on the leading role. Saint Marie has seen a few detectives over the past eight years, including Detective Goodman (Kris Marshall), who worked closely alongside Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton). So did anything happen between Goodman and Lloyd in the BBC show?

What happened between Humphrey and Martha in Death in Paradise?

Disorganised and accident-prone detective Goodman arrived at Saint Marie in 2014 and it wasn’t too long before he literally bumped into an old acquaintance in the shape of Lloyd.

Throughout the next few years, viewers watched how their friendship blossomed and their unresolved feelings grew for one another.

However, Lloyd had to move back to London for her job, leaving Goodman behind on the island.

But in the sixth series, a case took the team to London.

Taking his chance while he was in the country, Goodman told Lloyd he much he loved her and thankfully, she clearly felt the same.

After some soul-searching, Goodman realised he needed to be with the woman he loved so decided to leave Saint Marie so he could be with her.

In real life though, the actor Kris Marshall left the show because it had become “impractical”.

Speaking to RadioTimes shortly after leaving the show, he said: “It’s something my wife and I discussed three or four years ago

“When I was first offered the job, my son was six months old and my wife wasn’t working, so it was a very easy decision.

“We decided I would do Death in Paradise for a few years until it became impractical.

“It was always quite a finite thing. I certainly didn’t hide it from anyone I work with. I’m going to miss it terribly. There have already been times when I’ve thought to myself, ‘Have I made the right decision?’”

Death in Paradise will welcome new detective Parker, who will take on the leading role after actor Ardal O’Hanlon announced he would be leaving the show in the New Year.

In a statement, he said: “It’s something my wife and I discussed three or four years ago,” Marshall said.

“When I was first offered the job, my son was six months old and my wife wasn’t working, so it was a very easy decision. We decided I would do Death in Paradise for a few years until it became impractical.

Death in Paradise will return to BBC One in January 2020.

Is it part of the cycle? https://briefnews.eu/dark-season-3-spoilers-where-did-jonas-and-martha-go-is-it-part-of-the-cycle/ https://briefnews.eu/dark-season-3-spoilers-where-did-jonas-and-martha-go-is-it-part-of-the-cycle/#respond Thu, 04 Jul 2019 16:14:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dark-season-3-spoilers-where-did-jonas-and-martha-go-is-it-part-of-the-cycle/

Season three of Dark is in the early days of filming as the cast and crew shoot the final run of the critically-acclaimed German-language series. Netflix released season two recently with fans rapidly devouring all eight episodes and wanting more. Dark season two ended on a cliffhanger that left viewers perplexed and desperate to know more.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Dark season 2

Season two of Dark concluded with Jonas Kahnwald (played by Louis Hofmann) coming back from the future and trying to avert the apocalypse in Winden.

Sadly, he failed to do so and ended up going back to his home where he found Adam (Dietrich Hollinderbäumer), who shot dead Jonas’ girlfriend Martha Nielsen (Lisa Vicari).

Adam told Jonas that Martha’s death needed to happen in order for the teen to become him in the future.

He gave Jonas the choice of either going after him or staying with Martha – the schoolboy chose the latter.

WILL THERE BE ANOTHER SERIES OF DARK?

Adam left Jonas as he mourned Martha, the implication being events would take place once more: the apocalypse would happen as it had in previous cycles.

Just when all hope looked lost, a different version of Martha showed up with what appeared to be either a time machine or an inter-dimensional travel device.

New Martha told Jonas she wasn’t who he thought she was and both of them used her machine to travel to another place.

Many fans have been left perplexed about who she was and where they could have gone.

DARK SEASON 2 ENDING EXPLAINED

The big theory is that she is from a parallel universe with Dark consisting of multiple parallels worlds – potentially with every decision splintering off and creating a new reality.

So she could have taken Jonas with her back to her own world to try and save his version of reality. Judging from her travel device, New Martha’s world is technologically more advanced and could feasibly save Jonas’ reality.

Dark fans have taken to Reddit to discuss this theory and some have been speculating whether this scene could be a new event outside of the cycle that keeps playing out.

WHAT IS THE BOOTSTRAP PARADOX?

Dark season 3 could see Martha and Jones in a parallel world

One person on Reddit: “Well if it’s all part of the loop, of course he knew because he experienced it all himself. We as viewers are always tricked into thinking: This time it will mean something, what did they change – but I believe, nothing really.

“Old Jonas aka the stranger simply doesn’t refer to alternate Martha partly because it is not ‘his’ Martha and partly due to exciting writing of the story, but so far I believe, he has been to the other world.

“He (the stranger) simply didn’t know that him putting Martha at gunpoint and telling her to stay in the bunker would not make a difference. He still believes he can change his own past.”

While another person agreed: “You’re right. It’s very easy to deceive and promise something to a young guy who burns up with love.

“The wanderer is full of experience and bitter baggage, therefore, realizing that Martha 2.0 is not his real option, he wants to save the one that died. Everything comes with age. Knowledge – multiplies grief.”

A third person suggested: ”What if Adam is also from the alternate universe?

“That way, even if Jonas dies in the explosion, he won’t.”

One user said: “Dear, you are absolutely right! Jonas has to grow somewhere! He will grow up in the world from where Martha 2.0! Otherwise, he would have died young at the end of the cycle from an explosion at a nuclear power plant.”

Dark season 3 could see Jonas continue with the same cycle

Dark season 3 could see Jonas continue with the same cycle (Image: NETFLIX)

The only one thing certain at this stage is that Jonas was always going to avoid the explosion and grow up to be the older version him before transforming into Adam ultimately.

So, it seems likely the New Martha was always supposed to lead Jonas away from the explosion and just part of the cycle.

But could Jonas actually manage to break the cycle finally and save his own family at the same time in season three?

GOP congresswoman Martha McSally beats back challengers in Arizona primary, but her embrace of Trump’s agenda could be risky https://briefnews.eu/gop-congresswoman-martha-mcsally-beats-back-challengers-in-arizona-primary-but-her-embrace-of-trumps-agenda-could-be-risky/ https://briefnews.eu/gop-congresswoman-martha-mcsally-beats-back-challengers-in-arizona-primary-but-her-embrace-of-trumps-agenda-could-be-risky/#respond Wed, 29 Aug 2018 05:17:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gop-congresswoman-martha-mcsally-beats-back-challengers-in-arizona-primary-but-her-embrace-of-trumps-agenda-could-be-risky/ Martha McSallyNicole Neri/Reuters

  • Republican Rep. Martha McSally beat back conservative challengers for her party’s nomination in a crucial Senate race in Arizona.
  • She will face Kyrsten Sinema, a well-funded moderate Democratic congresswoman.
  • McSally embraced Trump and his agenda, despite his hard-line immigration policies that could alienate an evolving voter base in the state.
  • Arizona voted for Trump by 3.5 percentage points in 2016, but Democrats are buoyed both by its rapidly diversifying electorate and by a national political environment favoring their candidates.

Republican US Representative Martha McSally’s embrace of President Donald Trump and his agenda paid off on Tuesday, when the Arizonan beat back conservative challengers for her party’s nomination in a crucial US Senate race.

But Republican strategists warned that her shift to the right on Trump and his hard-line immigration policies could also prove an albatross in November, when she will face a well-funded moderate Democratic congresswoman, Kyrsten Sinema, in a race expected to be tight.

  • President Donald Trump pardoned conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza and said he was considering pardoning Martha Stewart and commuting former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich’s prison sentence.
  • Critics accused Trump of subverting the rule of law.
  • The US Constitution gives the president the power to issue pardons, and Trump has used that authority to benefit convicted figures revered by some on the political right, such as former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio.

President Donald Trump on Thursday pardoned a conservative commentator and said he was considering pardoning lifestyle maven Martha Stewart and commuting a former Illinois governor’s prison sentence, prompting critics to accuse him of subverting the rule of law.

Trump announced on Twitter his decision to pardon pundit and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza, who pleaded guilty in 2014 to US campaign finance law violations and was an outspoken critic of Democratic former President Barack Obama, saying he had been “treated very unfairly by our government!”

MARVIN GAYE: A Stubborn Kind Of Fellow (Jasmine)

My favourite Motown artist. We sang behind him on his first three major hits.

He was such a gentleman and I was always flirting with him.

When he sang he would close his eyes and tilt his head and you could tell he was feeling his lyrics.

What a voice.

LITTLE STEVIE WONDER: Tribute To Uncle Ray (Remember)

He’s so creative and this was a tribute to Ray Charles.

I was pretending to be a secretary when I first went for an audition at Motown and saw Stevie come in for his first day.

He was eight years old.

MARY WELLS: The One Who Really Loves You (Hallmark)

She always thrilled me with her version of the song Forever, which I recorded too.

She was my idol and Berry Gordy loved her from the moment he heard her sing.

She had a certain misty bluesy sound to her voice, which was all her own.

THE TEMPTATIONS: In A Mellow Mood (Motown)

These guys did fantastic interpretations of old ballads which they brought back to life.

They had great voices that blended together.

You could play this over and over when you want to dance slow and be romantic. Oh yeah!

FOUR TOPS: Four Tops (Motown)

I love Ask The Lonely. If it doesn’t make you cry, you’ve never been lonely.

I’ve got chills thinking about it.

A friend in high school used to live near where they rehearsed and I was a groupie standing outside listening.

So when we went on our first Motown revue with them, it was a thrill.

THE MIRACLES: Hi… We’re The Miracles (Motown)

They had a hit called Bad Girl which I saw them record.

I loved their harmonies.

When we did the Motown revue in 1964 we had segregated audiences but Smokey Robinson told the guards with baseball bats to go.

The audience broke the barrier and started mingling. The good old days!

Martha Stewart will never stop reinventing herself — here’s how she went from a stockbroker to hosting a cooking show with Snoop Dogg https://briefnews.eu/martha-stewart-will-never-stop-reinventing-herself-heres-how-she-went-from-a-stockbroker-to-hosting-a-cooking-show-with-snoop-dogg/ https://briefnews.eu/martha-stewart-will-never-stop-reinventing-herself-heres-how-she-went-from-a-stockbroker-to-hosting-a-cooking-show-with-snoop-dogg/#respond Tue, 09 Jan 2018 16:10:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/martha-stewart-will-never-stop-reinventing-herself-heres-how-she-went-from-a-stockbroker-to-hosting-a-cooking-show-with-snoop-dogg/ BI Graphics_Stay Hungry_800x100_POST (1)Business Insider

  • Martha Stewart has had a fascinating career path from model, to stockbroker, to cookbook author, to cooking show cohost with the rapper Snoop Dogg.
  • More than once, it has seemed like Stewart had finally failed — but she always comes back.
  • “I’m not Lenin or Stalin; I don’t have a master plan,” Stewart said in 1989. “There are just so many things can come along and interrupt it.”

Martha Stewart has lived the lives and careers of at least a dozen people in the last 76 years.

From model, to stockbroker, to cookbook author, to cooking show cohost with the rapper Snoop Dogg, Stewart has done it all.

There were times when it seemed that Stewart had reached the end of her career. In 2004, Stewart was found guilty on charges related to insider trading, and she spent five months in jail.

But since the scandal, Stewart has only come back stronger. Today, she has a show on VH1 with the rapper Snoop Dogg, called “Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party.” She has authored 87 books. Stewart’s reach extends to everything from her own meal-kit brand to a craft line at Michaels.

Stewart’s success took time

Stewart was born in 1941 as Martha Kostyra. She was raised in Nutley, New Jersey.

By the time Stewart was in high school, she had started her modeling career, which continued into her time at Barnard College. Living in New York City, the $ 50 an hour she could make modeling helped provide her with some spending money.

She married Andrew Stewart, a Yale Law School student, before graduating from Barnard with a degree in art and architectural history. Her first career was as a stockbroker at a boutique firm, but her passions lay elsewhere.

After moving with her husband to Westport, Connecticut, Stewart threw herself into renovating a farmhouse built in 1805 on Turkey Hill Road — a house that would become an iconic part of her lifestyle brand.

She started a catering company, which cooked gourmet meals for as many as 1,500 people at a time and exploded into a $ 1 million business.

The catering business also led to the book that launched her career.

Publishing executive Alan Mirken saw Stewart’s potential when she was catering a book-launch party, and he encouraged her to write a cookbook herself. The result was her first book, published in 1982 and titled “Entertaining.”

Becoming a “one-woman, multimillion-dollar industry”

Martha StewartAP

“Entertaining” was a hit and sold 625,000 copies, according to Entrepreneur magazine.

Stewart quickly followed it up with more books, including “Martha Stewart’s Quick Cook Menus,” “The Wedding Planner,” and “Martha Stewart’s Christmas.” She became a regular guest on TV programs like “The Oprah Winfrey Show” while growing into a role as the go-to home-cooking guru for millions of Americans. By the late 1980s, people would spend $ 900 to fly to Connecticut for a three-day “entertaining seminar” at Turkey Hill.

“Today, the 48-year-old former model and Wall Street stockbroker is a one-woman, multimillion-dollar industry whose name has become synonymous with gracious living,” The Sun-Sentinel reported in 1989.

Stewart launched a magazine, Martha Stewart Living, in 1991. In 1997, she took over ownership of the magazine from Time Inc. by founding Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, which also included her books and TV show. Stewart was chairman, president, and CEO of the company.

The success required hard work — and some sacrifices. Mirken told The Sun-Sentinel that Stewart worked “28 hours a day and [made] commitments for 56.”

This intense work ethic seems to have contributed to Stewart’s divorce in 1990.

“I had to sacrifice a marriage because of the lure of the great job, the fabulous workplace,” Stewart told CNN recently. “But, I don’t regret it at all, because what I’ve done is something bigger and better than just one marriage.

Stewart’s downfall

martha stewartJemal Countess/Getty Images

In 2002, Stewart was hit hard by scandal when news broke that the US Securities and Exchange Commission was investigating her for insider trading. Suddenly, Stewart could no longer focus on her salads, but instead was swamped with negative press and forced to step down as Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia’s CEO.

In 2003, the SEC charged Stewart for insider trading, saying she sold stock in a biopharmaceutical company in late 2001 after receiving an unlawful tip from her former stockbroker. In March 2004, she was found guilty on all counts, including on charges of obstruction of justice, conspiracy, and making false statements.

“When judge said count 1, you could hear this gasp,” NBC News correspondent Ann Thompson reported at the time. “No one could believe it, no matter how you thought the trial was going, that this would be happening to this woman who is one of the biggest celebrities in this country of making false statements.”

Stewart served five months in West Virginia’s Alderson Federal Prison Camp. Stewart says that the prison stint cost her company an estimated $ 1 billion.

The comeback

Martha StewartMichael Loccisano/Getty Images for The Michaels Companies

After finishing her prison term, Stewart refused to keep a low profile. She was soon back on the air with “The Martha Stewart Show” and signed deals with Home Depot, PetSmart, and Michaels.

Stewart’s comeback has had its failures along with its successes. In 2015, Sequential Brands Group announced it would acquire Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia in a deal valued at $ 353 million, after the company posted losses 11 out of the previous 12 years.

But, in the last few years, Stewart has reemerged as a beloved and still shockingly relevant personality.

She was a surprise hit at the 2015 Comedy Central roast of Justin Bieber. In 2016, she launched a meal-kit line called “Martha & Marley Spoon.” She hosts a cooking show on VH1 with the rapper Snoop Dogg. And, her Twitter account is one of the best online.

In many ways, it makes sense. Stewart is constantly evolving — and she’s determined to come out on top.

“I’m not Lenin or Stalin; I don’t have a master plan,” Stewart told The Sun-Sentinel back in 1989. “There are just so many things can come along and interrupt it.”

Surely those who heard the song in Big Little Lies also soon caught on. And, they were probably thrilled to hear that Lorde’s version was a bit more polished than Shaleine Woodley’s breathless just-ran-on-the-beach singalong. The track could be a daunting one to cover, though Lorde had the emotional range and control to pull off its pairing of sentimentality and bitterness.

The performance took place at Montreal’s Osheaga Festival, and as Consequence of Sound notes, it came a day after a storm ended Lorde’s Lollapalooza set rather prematurely. The cover was also seemingly site-specific, as Wainwright hails from Montreal.

Alison Wright, aka ‘The Americans” Martha, Cast in ‘Snowpiercer’ Pilot https://briefnews.eu/alison-wright-aka-the-americans-martha-cast-in-snowpiercer-pilot/ https://briefnews.eu/alison-wright-aka-the-americans-martha-cast-in-snowpiercer-pilot/#respond Thu, 15 Jun 2017 18:35:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alison-wright-aka-the-americans-martha-cast-in-snowpiercer-pilot/ As you may have already heard, one of the latest “everything will eventually become a series version of whatever it formerly was” news stories has been the TV pilot adaptation of Bong Joon-Ho’s wild, anti-capitalist, sci-fi/fantasy action film, Snowpiercer. It was already announced that Hamilton actor Daveed Diggs (who you may have recently caught on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Black-ish, or The Get Down) would play the TNT pilot-and-potential series’ lead, and recently Jennifer Connelly also joined the project. Now, another newsworthy actor has been added to the cast who’ll appear within a train circling a snowy post-apocalyptic globe: The Americans MVP Alison Wright, who became known for playing that series’ oft-manipulated, deceived, displaced, but emotionally resilient Martha.

According to Deadline, in the wealth stratified train, Wright’s character resides in the fourth class cabin with her husband and daughter. Her name is Lilah Anderson, and she’s a “careful and quiet but…pragmatic and independent thinker” who works in a nail salon (also on the train — as is everything in the living world in the movie/series). Apparently she “doesn’t know how strong she is, but she’ll soon be forced to find out.”

Meanwhile, in case you missed the Connelly/Diggs news, Connelly is playing a first class passenger named Melanie Cavill, who’s a first class passenger and works as the Voice of the Train, heard announcing the goings on across the social status-confined worlds over an intercom. Diggs, meanwhile, plays the series’ reluctant hero, a futuristic-drug addicted man living in the impoverished back of the train. Since they’re already announcing cast-members who aren’t situated towards the back of the train, I wonder if the show will be structured differently than the film — showing the different worlds simultaneously, as opposed to as the rebellion pushes forward into the upper echelons. (Otherwise it’d presumably take a while for those characters to be introduced.) Only time will tell how this film with a pretty closed structure will be adapted into a potentially seasons-long series.
