The JWST imagery also gave space agencies an opportunity to share Mars’ near-infrared atmospheric composition using the telescope’s onboard spectrograph array. The spectroscopic ‘map’ (pictured at middle) shows the planet absorbing carbon dioxide at several different wavelengths, and also shows the presences of carbon monoxide and water. A future research paper will provide more detail about the Martian air’s chemistry.

It was particularly tricky to record the images. Mars is one of the brightest objects the James Webb telescope can see — a problem for an observatory designed to study the most distant objects in the universe. Researchers countered this by capturing very short exposures and using special techniques to analyze the findings.
This is only the initial wave of pictures and data. It will take more observations to reveal more about Mars. However, the spectral info already hints at more information about the planet’s materials. Liuzzi also thinks JWST studies could settle disputes over the presence of methane on Mars, potentially signalling that the Red Planet harbored life in its distant past.

With Mars’ atmosphere comprising almost entirely of carbon dioxide, scientists have been keen to find a way of producing oxygen on the distant planet to support human missions, the first of which could take place in the 2030s.
NASA’s current Mars mission, which landed the Perseverance rover on the planet in February 2021, carried with it MOXIE (Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment), a Massachusetts Institute of Technology-led technology demonstration aimed at creating oxygen on Mars.
The lunchbox-sized instrument succeeded in its quest in April, becoming the first machine to produce oxygen on another planet.
That was a huge breakthrough, but news this week highlights even greater progress, as scientists confirmed MOXIE has now succeeded with seven experimental runs in “a variety of atmospheric conditions, including during the day and night, and through different martian seasons.” The team said it still needs to demonstrate the technology during dawn and dusk, “when the temperature is changing substantially,” but it’s confident it can achieve this.
A report on MIT’s website said that during each of its seven runs, MOXIE was able to reach its target of producing six grams of oxygen per hour, “about the rate of a modest tree on Earth.”
The success gives scientists hope that a larger, more powerful version of MOXIE could be deployed for a human mission to Mars, giving astronauts breathable air and eliminating the need to transport oxygen from Earth.
MOXIE’s work is also helping engineers learn more about how to isolate and store oxygen on Mars, a process that’s vital for launching rockets off the planet’s surface to bring astronauts home.
“We have learned a tremendous amount that will inform future systems at a larger scale,” said Michael Hecht, principal investigator of the MOXIE mission at MIT’s Haystack Observatory.
Commenting on the state of the experiment so far, MOXIE deputy principal investigator Jeffrey Hoffman, a professor of the practice in MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, said: “This is the first demonstration of actually using resources on the surface of another planetary body, and transforming them chemically into something that would be useful for a human mission. It’s historic in that sense.”
According to MIT, MOXIE works its magic by first pulling in martian air in through a filter to remove contaminants. The air is then pressurized and sent through an instrument called the Solid OXide Electrolyzer (SOXE), which electrochemically splits the carbon dioxide-rich air into oxygen ions and carbon monoxide. The oxygen ions are then isolated and recombined to form breathable, molecular oxygen.
Now that MOXIE has proved it can make oxygen, scientists plan to see how it copes being pushed to capacity in an experiment to increase production.
But to get this far is already impressive, and gives NASA another piece to fit in the complex jigsaw that it needs to complete to one day fly astronauts to Mars.
“To support a human mission to Mars, we have to bring a lot of stuff from Earth, like computers, spacesuits, and habitats,” Hoffman said. “But dumb old oxygen? If you can make it there, go for it — you’re way ahead of the game.”
]]>When the Veronica Mars cast bounded into TVLine’s San Diego Comic-Con suite over the weekend, I wasted no time calling out the dearly departed elephant in the room. And said elephant was braced for impact.
“Oh, God,” Jason Dohring sighed as I began to ask my first question, knowing full well that I was about to grill him and his co-stars about the death of his beloved alter ego, Logan Echolls, in the show’s Season 4 finale. After the actor reiterated much of what he shared with me in a phone interview we conducted earlier that week (read that Q&A here), the focus shifted to Kristen Bell‘s reaction to the heartbreaking death, which leaves her titular character a widower ahead of a possible Season 5.
“I was taken aback,” Bell admitted to me about her initial reaction to the dark twist, before adding that she immediately worried about the safety of the man who (essentially) engineered the explosion that felled Logan — series creator Rob Thomas. “My first thought was, [Is Rob] going to be safe? Because people will have very strong feelings about this. And I did not think that anyone would see it coming. Because we are not a show that kills [major characters] very often.”
Ultimately, Bell understood the thinking behind the controversial curveball. “A story is only interesting because there is conflict,” she conceded. “There’s nothing interesting about perfection. You want to see someone struggle… And you want Veronica in the underdog position.”
Press PLAY above as Bell and her cast mates reflect on the loss of their co-star and the repercussions for the show moving forward. And yes, watch as Bell warns Veronica fans that Neptune is the new Westeros.

A long time ago, we used to listen to the Veronica Mars theme song on a weekly basis — but it sounds kind of different now.
In the above video, star Kristen Bell and creator Rob Thomas make cute banter and a lot of Say Anything references before giving Marshmallows a sneak peek at the upcoming revival’s new cover of “We Used to Be Friends,” performed by The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde.
Press PLAY for a listen, then hit the comments with your thoughts on the snippet. All eight episodes of the revival hit Hulu on Friday, July 26.

Veronica Mars fans, prepare yourselves for a summer of LoVe.
The latest trailer for Hulu’s upcoming revival of the detective drama has more Logan/Veronica (aka “LoVe”) content than we’ve previously gotten, and we’re about to go cruising in a yellow XTerra just to celebrate.
In the video, Kristen Bell’s titular sleuth and her sometime boyfriend seem to be meeting up after a long time apart; Jason Dohring’s Logan informs her that he’s “back for extended leave” from the Navy — to which he returned at the end of the series’ 2014 film — though we don’t find out exactly why.
It seems like the pair gets quite cozy during his Neptune visit, but (shocker!) it’s not all smooth seas for the sailor and his lady. Exhibit A: When Kirby Howell-Baptiste’s character Nicole asks “So what’s the destructive gene in your relationship?,” Veronica sadly replies, “I think it might be me?”
But matters of the heart aren’t Veronica’s only worry this time around, as evidence by the multiple explosions that fill the trailer. Is there a serial killer afoot in Neptune? Who is trying to destroy the city? And what does Big Dick Casablancas’ prison pal — we’re sorry, “friend and associate” — Clyde (Counterpart‘s J.K. Simmons) have to do with it?
Fans of the original series will be thrilled to see Veronica and dad Keith engaging in their usual banter, Dick deeming himself “King of Spring Break” (and later wearing some truly dazzling gold lamé pants) and the return of series standbys like Weevil, Veronica’s trusty taser and Logan’s fists.
In addition to original cast members Bell, Dohring, Enrico Colantoni, Ryan Hansen, Percy Daggs III, Francis Capra, David Starzyk, Max Greenfield and Adam Rose, the ensemble also includes Dawnn Lewis (A Different World), and Howell-Baptiste (The Good Place).
Press PLAY on the video above to watch the new trailer in full, then hit the comments with what you’re most looking forward to in the revival.

It looks like someone in Neptune is about to get his/her head shrunk, courtesy of one Mary McDonnell.
TVLine has learned exclusively that the Battlestar Gallactica and Major Crimes vet is set to guest star in Hulu’s forthcoming Veronica Mars revival as Jane, a warm-hearted therapist.
A Hulu rep confirmed McDonnell’s casting, but declined to reveal the length of her stay or who — if anyone — her therapist character will be treating. (For those wondering, yes, this is the Veronica Mars tidbit I teased in my latest Ask Ausiello column.)
The eight-episode revival picks up five years after the events of the 2014 fan-funded movie and features returning stars Kristen Bell, Enrico Colantoni, Jason Dohring, Percy Daggs III, Francis Capra, Ryan Hansen and Max Greenfield (among others). The mini-series will take the franchise back to its “hardcore So-Cal noir” roots, series creator Rob Thomas previously shared. “[There will be] one big case [with] eight episodes to tell the story. This is a detective show.”
Production recently wrapped on the revival; Hulu has yet to announce a premiere date.

Welcome to Edition 1.35 of the Rocket Report! The leader of Russia’s space program, Dmitry Rogozin, has promised his president that the country can double its launch total this year. And if you believe that, well, we’ve got a trampoline to sell you that will allow your astronauts to reach orbit.
As always, we welcome reader submissions, and if you don’t want to miss an issue, please subscribe using the box below (the form will not appear on AMP-enabled versions of the site). Each report will include information on small-, medium-, and heavy-lift rockets as well as a quick look ahead at the next three launches on the calendar.

ABL scales up vehicle performance. ABL Space Systems said that it will offer a more powerful variant of its RS1 rocket—up from 900 to 1,200kg to LEO—to find its niche in the crowded smallsat-launcher market. A launch will cost $ 12 million. Company executives told SpaceNews that the increase in performance comes after a year and a half of work to refine the design of the vehicle and better understand what it would take to produce the rocket.

Angelo Vermeulen’s four-month vacation to Hawaii was unlike any other. Rather than splaying out on a beach, he sat locked inside a bubble atop the Mauna Loa volcano. Instead of lounging around in a Speedo, he fumbled around dry lava in a space suit. And forget feasting on juicy tropical fruits; he gnawed on prepackaged instant food. So goes the life of a fake astronaut.
Three years later, Vermeulen — a volunteer crew commander of HI-SEAS, a NASA-funded Mars simulation — has rejoined society and no longer dons a space suit just to step outside. And in the time since his bleak summer getaway, the long-haul race to the real Mars has sped light-years ahead. NASA is shooting for the 2030s, with “deep-space habitation facilities,” says NASA spokeswoman Kathryn Hambleton. Vermeulen is optimistic on all fronts: “It might take 50 years or it might take 500 years, but it’s going to happen,” says the 44-year-old TED senior fellow in his TED Talk. Yet whether the trip takes decades or millennia, Vermeulen’s radical “pre-enactment” in Hawaii may prove more crucial to reaching “the big-picture dream of humankind,” he says.

Few are “space-suited” for the dual task of philosophizing about the future of space colonization and ensuring we aren’t incinerated by cosmic radiation in the process. Vermeulen is a space systems researcher — a biologist who’s finishing up research on interstellar travel for his second Ph.D., at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands — and when not digging in on the science of astrobiology, he brings his space passion to Earth, serving as a veritable Marina Abramovic of terrestrial-astral performance. He designs art installations like Biomodd, which uses algae to “cool its computer processors,” and spacecraft sculptures such as Seeker, a global community project of starship prototypes. His work is exhibited worldwide, from New York to the Philippines, with the goal of encouraging the public to more rigorously explore the future of humans in space.
Vermeulen is so committed to his interactive art that he once locked himself, along with five other artists, inside one of his creations on exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana, Slovenia. “We test what we build,” he says simply. The European Space Agency came knocking, asking Vermeulen to consult on MELiSSA, an artificial ecosystem for long-term space missions.
Growing up in tiny Belgium, hardly a space giant, Vermeulen never considered a career as an astronaut. But at age 8, when his parents gifted him his first microscope, he started cultivating an interest in ecology. He earned his first Ph.D., in biology, from the University of Leuven in Belgium, where he analyzed the plant and animal specimens he collected during nature walks. Today, Vermeulen has moved well beyond the microscopic, with bigger plans on the horizon. Getting to Mars is merely half the battle, he says. Humans must be psychologically ready to deal with the isolation and limited resources, or even endless boredom. What’s there to do for fun in deep space? How should we spend our time? “I really don’t think the human mind is ready,” Vermeulen says with a shrug.
Neither are our wallets, it seems. Government funding for space has plummeted, from 4.4 percent of America’s federal budget in 1966 to 0.5 percent today. Plus, Mars is such a long-term, expensive project, it’s vital that the Mars missions are backed not just by dollars but also by public support. It’s precisely why we need more scientists — and yes, artist-scientists, says Mark Lupisella, an engineer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Granted, others are already imagining our future in space, including wunderkind Elon Musk, who’s planning for a permanent human settlement on Mars by 2025 (SpaceX didn’t respond to requests for comment; their heads are probably in the clouds). Creative types like Vermeulen, though, can evince the wonkiness of space habitation and interstellar travel in ways an engineer can’t, and “better tap into all of the stuff that motivates and moves people, emotionally, philosophically and spiritually,” Lupisella says.

Along with his doctoral research on starship development, Vermeulen is pondering not only how to get to the Red Planet but how to live there once landing. For him, it’s not enough to survive the lethal danger that awaits humans in deep space; the threats to soul and psyche must also be addressed — what, he asks, will humanity do as it redefines itself, its notions of social life, community, identity, leisure and recreation in zero gravity? Vermeulen’s must-have item for space is “a healthy dose of autonomy” — that’s what makes us human, he says. Ironic, coming from a man who keeps trapping himself inside strange, tiny structures.
But if NASA, SpaceX and the rest of the space-braving crew don’t properly prepare for how we’ll stay mentally grounded as well as reorient our social identity (“the culture of Earth”) in a radically new environment, we’re doomed long before those spacecrafts ever reach their launchpads. “Psychologically, emotionally and socially, this could very well become a big disaster,” Vermeulen says.
He would know. Stepping forth from his self-imposed volcanic isolation of 120 days, Vermeulen was blinded by the explosive green and blue hues of life on planet Earth, “the beauty of vision,” he says. For him, this is home sweet home — if only he could take it with him to Mars.
