Is America broken beyond repair? That was the question on Kate McKinnon’s mind in Saturday Night Live‘s first sketch of 2021.

“Hello and welcome to What Still Works, where we look at every part of society and wonder ‘What still works?’ It’s a new year and we have a new president, so some things should work — but do they?” McKinnon asked.

The first topic was government — and already, McKinnon had her doubts. For insight, she brought out Marjorie Taylor Greene, the wackadoo congresswoman from Georgia who’s been promoting QAnon conspiracy theories. The U.S. representative sat down and offered McKinnon a gun, then ran through a series of grotesque conspiracies regarding the Parkland school shooting, the September 11 attacks and California wildfires.

Next up, McKinnon checked in on the stock market with the new majority shareholder of GameStop, Derrick Boner. ‘Nuff said.

Afterwards, social media CEOs Jack Dorsey and Mark Zuckerberg dropped by to discuss how Twitter and Facebook have played a hand in spreading misinformation. “Fundamentally, Facebook still works,” Zuckerberg argued. “Not only does it help form communities online, it has helped people meet and connect in real life. For example, at the Capitol!”

After Zuckerberg short-circuited, McKinnon checked in on the coronavirus vaccine rollout with O.J. Simpson, who is among the three percent of the population who have already received the vaccine while teachers and those suffering from longterm lung conditions remain on the waitlist.

For her final topic, McKinnon asked, “Is Tom Brady working?” There with his thoughts was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ star quarterback (played by this weekend’s SNL host, John Krasinski), who acknowledged that no one’s rooting for him heading into Super Bowl LV. Once he bolted, McKinnon acknowledged the absurdity of the cold open.

“I’ve been Kate McKinnon, as myself, slowly losing my mind like all of you,” she said. “Stay strong — or weak. Weak is a great option, too.”

Jon Hamm as a hologram sounds like a future I want to live in. He stars alongside Lois Smith, Geena Davis, and Tim Robbins in director Michael Almereyda‘s (Experimenter) science-fiction drama, Marjorie Prime. The movie was well-received at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

In the future, there’s a company providing holographs of the deceased. Jon Hamm is playing one of those holograms, Walter, for Marjorie (Smith). At the age of 86, Marjorie isn’t doing well and wants to piece together the past with her deceased husband. Marjorie and her children, played by Robbins and Davis, go through some painful history together to give Walter, Marjorie’s “Prime,” an understanding of the man he was.

It’s a great, question-raising premise. The story originated as a play from the co-writer of the film, Jordan Harrison. When our former editor Angie Han saw the movie at Sundance Film Festival, she thought it felt more like a play than a movie:

Marjorie Prime is based on a play, feels like a play, and seems like it probably would’ve been better off left as a play. Despite an intriguing Black Mirror-esque premise and strong performances from its central cast (Lois Smith, Geena Davis, Jon Hamm, and Tim Robbins), the film comes out feeling static and distant.

Other reactions were typically more positive. A lot of Black Mirror comparisons have been made – which sounds like a good thing to me. The performances are what stand out the most in the trailer. Smith looks like she’ll do some heartbreaking work, and Hamm looks great, too. He’s following up his fantastic turn in Baby Driver, in which he brought a lot of humanity to an otherwise nasty guy.

Eighty-six-year-old Marjorie spends her final, ailing days with a computerized version of her deceased husband. With the intent to recount their life together, Marjorie’s “Prime” relies on the information from her and her kin to develop a more complex understanding of his history. As their interactions deepen, the family begins to develop ever diverging recounts of their lives, drawn into the chance to reconstruct the often painful past.

Built around exceptional performances from a veteran cast, Marjorie Prime shines a light on an often-obscured corner in the world of artificial intelligence and its interactions with mortality. Bringing us robustly into the future, Michael Almaryeda’s poetic film forces us to face the question—If we had the opportunity, how would we choose to rebuild the past, and what would we decide to forget?

Marjorie Prime opens in theaters August 18, 2017.

Hamm stars alongside 86-year-old actress Lois Smith, Geena Davis, and Tim Robbins. Smith plays Marjorie, a widow who’s now…sort of being rejoined late in life by her husband — to the extent that an A.I.-boosted hologram can be a husband. (The movie seems to form an arc that leads to viewers questioning what exactly differentiates a technologically created, seemingly sentient and emotive you, me, or Jon Hamm from a “real” you, me, or Jon Hamm. Thus, not thematically dissimilar to, well, most A.I. movies.)

In terms intimate, romance-deconstructing/reconstructing sci-fi, it looks like it shares a lot with both Her and the arresting “San Junipero” episode of Black Mirror, both of which hinge on the liberating recognition of intimacy as collaborative projection. The film is based on a Pulitzer Prize-nominated play by Jordan Harrison, which also starred Lois Smith in the same role. 

Flavorwire Film Editor Jason Bailey caught the film at Sundance, and wrote:

It’s a movie of ideas rather than effects, which make for the best science fiction anyway. It asks big questions, about the nature of memory, how we choose to consider those we love, how we choose to handle our own grief… The antiseptic settings and anthropological approach (as well as the slightly off-putting photography, which seems weirdly cheap and garish) can keep the viewer at a distance. But those who can tune in to its wavelength will find it strangely satisfying.

Marjorie Prime will be out in New York and L.A. on August 18, but the hologram Jon Hamms will appear in theaters throughout the country in the following weeks. Watch the trailer:
