It’s been a dramatic week in the Charmed-verse, as several stars from both the original series and The CW’s reboot have spoken out publicly against one another. Now, Holly Marie Combs is taking a page from Piper Halliwell’s book and calling for peace. “My Charmed friends … I would like everyone to stop,” Combs tweeted on Thursday night. “Truth be told and it will be told is that our issues were and are at the corporate level. And we have the receipts. Just as the new cast were asked to be people they were not we were given ultimatums that were crazily unfair.” She added, “And I will say to the ladies of the reboot… stick together… negotiate together and know that the discourse between us, you guys and crews being discarded and replaced is what they bank on. Division. That is all. Blessed be.” “And for the last time I will say it’s not about any 1 person taking a job to support their families or themselves,” Combs concluded. “It’s about an industry that sees us only as numbers whether it be follower #’s or $ signs. Cuz in the end and actually in the beginning that’s all we were/are. Cool.” Though there’s long been tension between the shows’ casts, this latest flare-up came earlier this week when reboot star Sarah Jeffery responded to Combs and Rose McGowan’s criticism of the new series, which they made earlier this month during an Instagram Live video. During the video, Combs acknowledged one follower’s comment that the original Charmed has been taken off Netflix. Combs theorized aloud that “when you search for [the show on Netflix], they want you to find the new Charmed and not the old people,” prompting McGowan to respond that the reboot “sucks.” “I haven’t seen it, I can’t say that. I’ve never seen it,” McGowan continued, adding to a laughing Combs that “I’m happy that people have jobs. But it can still suck.” “I find it sad and quite frankly pathetic to see grown women behaving this way,” Jeffery tweeted on Monday. “I truly hope they find happiness elsewhere, and not in the form of putting down other [women of color]. I would be embarrassed to behave this way. Peace and love to y’all.” Combs responded to Jeffery’s tweets on Tuesday, calling them “some [bulls–t].” McGowan also reacted to Jeffery’s tweets on Wednesday, though her response was a tad more combative than Combs’ tweets. “Dear Sarah Jeffery, I honestly had no idea who you were til you tweeted,” she wrote in an Instagram story. After insisting that her criticism of the reboot has nothing to do with its diversity, she added, “There’s no soul or heart in something made purely for profit whilst refusing to elevate and innovate. Reboots will always be the shadow, the originals will always be the sun. I wish you well.” The cast of Charmed is currently filming the reboot’s third season, which is expected to premiere sometime in 2021.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising?
This week we make our best Michael Caine impression, do some light time traveling, clean out our closets, get a glimpse into what happens days before the zero hour occurs, and then debunk psychics and soothsayers.
I would try and make sense out of director Tim van Dammen’s film, but it would probably sound silly if I did. The long and short of this thing is that it’s super weird and seriously high concept. However, what makes it such an unbelievable story is that it’s such a delight. I don’t get where things are going once we establish the initial reason we’re all gathered together, but that’s alright with me. Time travel, human cloning, poop jokes, it’s all here, and all I’m looking for is a good laugh.
Director James Marsh, Academy Award-winning director of Man on Wire and BAFTA winner for The Theory of Everything, is going lighter with his latest. Packed with talent from the likes of Michael Caine, Jim Broadbent, and Ray Winstone I’m charmed by what is, at heart: a geezer heist flick with a twist. I like how this takes some turns here and there to make it a story worth watching. There’s not a whole lot of polish on the trailer, but that’s okay when you consider how straight-forward the premise is.
You can’t fault director Lance Mungia for making a documentary on something that is indeed without merit or has any grip on reality. ESP, telekinesis, any of that voodoo you used to read about as kids only to see how fake it was, is pretty astounding when you realize how legit interested the US and Soviet governments were in seeing if it was true. I see this documentary as something you would watch on a Tuesday night for a little bit of fun trivia about where our government was spending our tax dollars and maybe a few giggles. Honestly, this is only for the tinfoil hat wearing community.
One week before a major event. The planning, the discussing, the logistics of pulling something off. It’s fascinating to rush towards the end and see how it all does, or does not, go off as planned. This trailer, which ties together nicely so many disparate narratives, contextualizes all these events in a way that is cohesive and stirring.
I’ve often heard the words “so satisfying” to describe things on the Internet that seem to work well, and this is no exception. Specifically, it reminded me of what I read from Marie Kondo when talking about getting rid of the detritus in your life.
“If you’re having a hard time getting rid of something, thank the item for the role it has already played in your life,” Kondo advises, recommending you say something to the garment like “Thank you for giving me joy when I bought you” or “Thank you for teaching me what doesn’t suit me.” Then you’re free to “let it go.”
Somehow I’ve never forgotten this, and this trailer seems less Hoarders and more positive self-help. The trailer nicely weaves in positive messaging and, indeed, it feels like a program that wants to have a good influence. I am here for all of it.
Nota bene: If you have any suggestions of trailers for possible inclusion in this column, even have a trailer of your own to pitch, please let me know by sending me a note at Christopher_Stipp@yahoo.com or look me up via Twitter at @Stipp
In case you missed them, here are the other trailers we covered at /Film this week:

Of the many ways Disney builds their Star Wars brand outside of the theater, Star Wars: Forces of Destiny may be one of the best. It’s a campaign made up of animated shorts, toys, and kids’ books that are all intended to bring some extra attention to the franchise’s female characters. We wrote about the first season of animated shorts last year, and now Disney is back with Forces of Destiny season 2.
Star Wars actors Daisy Ridley, Lupita Nyong’o, Kelly Marie Tran, and more lend their voices to the animated versions of their characters, and this batch is especially notable because it features the return of Mark Hamill voicing Luke Skywalker. Check out all eight episodes below.
Talent from across Star Wars films and TV reprise their roles in these canonical stories – Mark Hamill (Luke), Daisy Ridley (Rey), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz), John Boyega (Finn), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose), Tiya Sircar (Sabine), Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka), Vanessa Marshall (Hera), Catherine Taber (Padmé) and Matt Lanter (Anakin), among others.
Hera and Sabine liberate an Imperial shuttle only to find they have unexpected cargo – troopers!
Upset when Ahsoka joins a mission set for just he and Padmé, Anakin puts them on a dangerous path. Working alongside the secret couple, Ahsoka helps save the day.
On their approach to Canto Bight, Finn and Rose learn to work together to navigate a pod of dangerous creatures.
Jyn helps a young thief learn a valuable lesson.
While scavenging inside a Star Destroyer, Rey is cornered by competition on the hunt for a valuable part.
Maz Kanata helps Leia, Chewbacca and R2-D2 with a clever plan to free Han from Jabba the Hutt.
Training with Master Yoda in the swamps of Dagobah, Luke learns an important lesson.
Rey has her training interrupted by some very mischievous porgs.
***
It’s cool to see a little more of Luke’s training with Yoda on Dagobah, and getting a peek at more of the dynamic between Rose and Finn helps to build upon their relationship from The Last Jedi – even though the situation in which they find themselves in this video seems a little too cartoonish, even for a Star Wars animated short. But on the plus side, now it’s canon that Rey used the Force to stop a porg from leaping off a cliff after it stole her lightsaber. Those things rule.

Marie Wright can’t stop smiling and everyone around her notices — it’s just who she’s always been. Positive, upbeat and excited about what’s to come in life.
At 57 years old, Wright is living out a lifelong dream as the lead for Canada’s wheelchair curling team at the Paralympic Games in South Korea.
On the ice she smiles at her teammates. She smiles at her opponents. But she saves her biggest smiles for her two oldest daughters — Kyla and Tara — sitting in the crowd at the Gangneung Curling Venue.
“To see them here watching me inspires me to play better,” Wright said. “All four of my daughters have meant the world to me. They’re my life.”
You’d never know by the way she carries herself what Wright has been through.
On August 20, 1988, on a prairie dirt road in rural Saskatchewan, Wright was in a vehicle accident that left her a paraplegic.
“I was following a grain truck and there were no lights on the back of it. It stopped out of nowhere. No signal lights, break lights or tail lights,” she said.
“It was either hit the ditch or hit the back of the truck. I thought I could probably go in the ditch a little sideways but the loose gravel just grabbed it and flipped it end over end.”
She wasn’t the only one in the vehicle. Her two youngest daughters, Jolene and Rachelle, along with her niece and nephew were with her.
“My youngest daughter [Rachelle] was one at the time and suffered a serious head injury. She’s living in a home in a chair now. Everyone loves her.”
For 10 months following the accident Wright recovered in the hospital, all while staying by the side of her one-year-old who was also recovering.
“It was a long recovery and she had to be in the hospital longer than me so I stayed with her every day.”
That was only the beginning. Two years after the horrific accident, Wright’s husband left her. She was still recovering, adjusting to life in a wheelchair as a paraplegic and now a single mother of four.
“When my husband left sometimes I felt like giving up, but then I had my four kids. Because of my children I will not give up,” she said, smiling.
Kyla and Tara were in Brandon, Man., visiting family at the time of the accident. It was a horrible time for them, but to this day they still marvel at how their mother has been able to overcome it all.
“She’s a Superwoman,” Kyla Shewchuk said. “It was tough on her. I was the oldest and I saw her cry. We cried together.”
But they would never cry for too long, Kyla says.
“She’s strong. She’s resilient. And she is a ton of fun. She should be the face of Canada. She is polite and happy and smiling and hilarious. A superhero really, in every way.”
Wright’s second-oldest daughter, Tara Gottselig, can’t remember a time while they were growing up when her mom would slow down because she was in a wheelchair. She says her mom was busier than anyone else she knew.
“She was our coach for everything. She just rocked. She was incredible,” she said.
I just had the best chat with Marie Wright’s daughters, Tara and Kyla. Marie plays lead for Canada. She has four daughters.
These two call their mom a super hero. I’ll have a feature on this family’s journey tomorrow morning. And it’s nothing short of incredible. #cbccurlpic.twitter.com/THMIs880ty
—@Devin_Heroux
Gottselig has three daughters of her own now and fully appreciates what her mom did for them.
“I did not realize the struggles she would have had until I became a mom,” Gottselig said. “She never let us see her down. She always put us first. She took us to sports. She was the most supportive person in the world.”
Tara says their home in Moose Jaw, Sask., growing up was where everyone wanted to be.
“My friends always pointed it out. Our house was the house to go to. She was everybody’s mom. Lots of my friends called her ‘Mom.’ She was a mom to the community.”
Kyla lives in Saskatoon now but when she goes back to visit her mother in Moose Jaw, it’s quite the experience.
“She’s practically a celebrity back home,” Kyla said. “We can’t go anywhere. When we go to Walmart we have to stop 85 times to talk to people. There are elementary students and older people smiling and stopping to talk to her.”
Kyla and Tara are in the crowd watching every wheelchair curling game. Rachelle is in Moose Jaw. Jolene is also back in Saskatchewan and is expecting a baby soon.
The two oldest sisters say they get teary-eyed every time they watch their mom take to the ice for Canada at the Paralympics.
“We are so lucky to be here,” Kyla said. “She’s done more for us in our lives than we could ever do. This is the smallest thing we can do to show how proud we are of her.”
Tara is going through all of the emotions during each and every shot and game.
“Pride. Excitement. Fear when they’re down. But to look down and see her face and then have her smile at us, we needed to be here for this,” she said.
For Wright, this is more than she could have ever imagined. She’s grateful for her family and community who helped her get to this point and says she’s getting messages every day from people all across Saskatchewan cheering her on.
Wright hopes that through this Paralympic experience she can remind Canadians anything is possible — and to always keep smiling.
“Whatever happens to you in life just never give up because there’s something out there for you somewhere.”

She’s fought in a galaxy far, far away — and now she’s coming to a computer near you.
Kelly Marie Tran, who had a breakout role in last year’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, has joined the cast ofSorry for Your Loss, an upcoming Facebook Watch series starring Elizabeth Olsen, our sister site Variety reports. Olsen stars as Leigh, a young widow reconnecting with her old friends after the death of her husband; Tran will play Leigh’s younger sister Jules, described as “the most fun girl at a party, and the hardest to live with.”
The half-hour dramedy, previously developed at Showtime, scored a 10-episode order from Facebook’s new video service last month; no release date has been set. Kit Steinkellner (Z: The Beginning of Everything) wrote the pilot, and Switched at Birth veteran Lizzy Weiss will serve as showrunner.
Tran was virtually unknown before she shot to instant fame with her role as resistance fighter Rose Tico in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the latest installment in the blockbuster franchise that hit movie screens last December. Prior to that, Tran appeared in episodes of About a Boy and Adam Ruins Everything.

Amazon’s latest Prime Video production won’t just rely on star power to reel you in — it should also appeal to science fans. The internet giant is teaming with France’s Studiocanal on Radioactive, a biopic covering the work and romance of pioneering radioactivity scientist Marie Curie (and by extension, Pierre Curie). Produced by Persepolis‘ Marjane Satrapi, it’s the adaptation of Lauren Redniss’ graphic novel Radioactive and will star Gone Girl‘s Rosamund Pike. The star of the show may be the science itself, however.
Satrapi notes that Radioactive will explore the discovery of radioactivity, including the Curies’ “humanist” approach and the long-term consequences (both good and bad) of exploiting its behavior. It might follow the path of movies like The Imitation Game, where science and technology are more than just backdrops for a typical drama.
Studiocanal will distribute the movie in Australia, France, Germany and New Zealand, while Amazon will take care of the rights everywhere else.
The movie has only just started production, so there’s no release date to work with. This is clearly part of Amazon’s strategy to swing for the fences and produce blockbuster hits, mind you. While Amazon isn’t necessarily expecting the award success of Imitation Game, it would likely be happy if Radioactive was mentioned in the same sentence.

Charmed, I’m pretty sure she’s not.
Original Charmed cast member Holly Marie Combs took to Twitter early Friday morning to denounce The CW’s in-the-works reboot, which snagged a formal pilot order on Thursday. And she pulled no punches.
“Here’s the thing,” she began. “Until you ask us to rewrite it like [exec producer] Brad Kern did weekly don’t even think of capitalizing on our hard work.” Combs then harrumphed that the franchise “belongs to the four of us” — presumably referring to former co-stars Alyssa Milano, Shannen Doherty and Rose McGowan — as well as “our vast amount of writers, crews and predominantly the fans.”
Dick Van Dyke Show funny lady Rose Marie died on Thursday afternoon at the age of 94.
Born Rose Marie Mazetta, the former child performer and vaudevillist at age 38 joined The Dick Van Dyke Show as sassy comedy writer Sally Rogers, a role she played for five seasons, earning three Emmy nominations along the way. Rose Marie then moved on to The Doris Day Show, playing Doris Martin’s friend Myrna.
From there, Rose Marie guested on such series as Adam-12, S.W.A.T., The Love Boat and Murphy Brown, before playing team owner Mitzi Balzer on the 1994 Fox sitcom Hardball. In more recent years, she guested on early-’00s episodes of The Hughleys and Andy Richter Controls the Universe, and did voice work for The Garfield Show.
Rose Marie is also regarded as the only original member of the game show Hollywood Squares to have worked on all of its reincarnations.
The actress is survived by a daughter and son-in-law.

In this edition of Star Wars Bits:
Star Wars has spawned many iconic love stories, from the canon tales of Han and Leia to the fan ships like Storm/Pilot (Poe and Finn) and Reylo (Rey and Kylo). But what about the Rodian bounty hunter and the Stormtrooper? If Funny or Die had their say, this pair will go down in the history books, too.
ILM was founded to bring the original Star Wars to life, and they’re still the visual effects company behind the expansive galaxy that we know and love. This week, Inside The Magic got the chance to talk to ILM’s creative director, Ben Morris, about creating the world of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and it’s a must read for any VFX fans.
There’ve long been rumors about a Yoda spin-off movie. During a recent interview with Yahoo to celebrate the Director’s Cut release of The Little Shop of Horrors, Frank Oz sort of (but not really at all) confirmed it. The Dark Crystal co-director and original Miss Piggy performer teased fans with some off-color jokes about the future of the little green guy, including this surreal moment: “He is going to. He’s going to be a chorus girl.” Whatever you say, Frank!
Italian film website Bad Taste got this great interview with Last Jedi helmer Rian Johnson during the press tour leading up to the film. Johnson opened up about his fear of being the new guy in Star Wars, talking about his nerves as the “new kid on the block.” Don’t worry – we thought you did wonderfully!
Looks like The Last Jedi will be coming to small screens in a very fancy format with Digital Bits breaking the news that the newest edition will likely be released on HD 4K as well as Blu-Ray and DVD early next year.
If you’re already deep into the world of Star Wars: Battlefront II, then you’ve probably realized you learn a lot about the Star Wars universe in this game. According to Star Wars Explained, the newest DLC “Project Resurrection” can tell us a lot about The Last Jedi, so it’s probably best to avoid it until you’ve gotten to your local movie theater and caught up with the saga.
The Last Jedi was unquestionably action packed and it if Rian Johnson had his way, there would’ve been even more. During an interview with THR, production designer Rick Heinrichs revealed that Johnson’s original script was… ambitious. “The original script had about 160 sets in it, a ridiculous amount of sets,” Heinrichs shared.
It’s long been one of Star Wars‘ biggest problems: a distinct lack of diversity. Though the new trilogy has tried to improve this on screen, it’s still lacking off screen as every Star Wars film has been directed by a white man. However, Rian Johnson is ready for that to change. “Hell yes it’s time! There are so many incredibly talented female directors, directors of color out there and so many I would love to see play in this universe,” Johnson said during a press conference, Yahoo movies reported.
Mashable reports that you can now play as Finn or Captain Phasma in Battlefront II…if you’re willing to exchange some in-game credits, of course.
For many fans, watching The Last Jedi is a bittersweet experience as it means saying goodbye to Princess Leia and Carrie Fisher. As reported by LRM, there aren’t any post credits sequences after the movie, but there is a gorgeous dedication to Carrie scored by Leia’s iconic theme. Have the tissues ready…
If you’ve always wanted a cranky old Jedi master of your own then this Hot Toys Luke Skywalker is the action figure you’ve been looking for. His steely gaze will run you over two hundred bucks so you’ll have be very committed to your Jedi training before making this purchase.

Here’s the regal BB-8 meeting some Galactic commoners. We jest, of course, because at the UK Star Wars premiere the little droid that could met with Princes William and Harry, who have cameos in the newest entry.
Star Wars posters have a habit of being iconic and these incredible images from Poster Posse are keeping that tradition intact. We especially love this one by Matt Needle, depicting Rey in front of a large red sun. Truly epic.
Han Solo believes in luck, but according to some, the concept doesn’t exist in the Star Wars galaxy as we know it. This great short from Star Wars Explained delves into whether or not you can truly be lucky in Star Wars or whether everything is dictated by the Force.
Inverse got into controversial territory into the lead up to the release of The Last Jedi with a piece about just which Star Wars films are actually any good, and which order you should watch them in. Whilst we don’t agree with all their points (Return of the Jedi diehards here) it’s a fun deep dive.
Rian Johnson has been open about his initial reluctance to make a Star Wars sequel. But in this recent deep dive interview with Vulture, Johnson opened up about what finally made him decide to pursue The Last Jedi. It’s a lovely bit of insight into the creative mind behind The Last Jedi.
Kelly Marie Tran and her fervent Star Wars fandom has been an unending joy in the lead up to The Last Jedi. In a recent interview with Yahoo, the actress who plays new lead Rose Tico revealed how she freaked out over meeting a very famous droid. And it was cute as ever.
It’s been a long wait for fans, but The Last Jedi is finally upon us. Sadly, for viewers at a midnight screening in Burbank the sound failed. As Moviefone explained fans were not happy and almost caused a riot, refusing to leave until the police were called. These are clearly Dark Side fans, as we all know that “a Jedi shall not feel anger.”

The Last Jedi premiere was an emotional experience for Kelly Marie Tran, one that saw the star tear up on numerous occasions, including when she met this young fan dressed as her character, Rose Tico.
