The Thai Filmmaker Documenting Life at the Margins https://briefnews.eu/the-thai-filmmaker-documenting-life-at-the-margins/ https://briefnews.eu/the-thai-filmmaker-documenting-life-at-the-margins/#respond Tue, 20 Feb 2018 05:47:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-thai-filmmaker-documenting-life-at-the-margins/

Five years ago, Nontawat Numbenchapol struck up an acquaintance with a boy living in Bangkok while working on a PBS documentary about Shan people, an ethnic minority group from Myanmar. The boy told the documentarian that he hoped to become a photographer and filmmaker, and the two connected on Facebook to chat about cameras.

By 2016, Numbenchapol noticed that the now young man’s online photos had changed.

“He was no longer in Bangkok. He went back to live in the buffer zone with the military and he had [photos of himself with] guns,” the 35-year-old filmmaker tells OZY. “I realized then, ‘Oh, this is my next film.’”

[No Boys Land] is meant to expose the plight of refugees — while prompting Thai audiences to consider what a military-sanctioned reality could look like.

The “buffer zone” refers to Thailand’s northwestern border shared with Myanmar, a country whose military has long warred with its ethnic minorities. Decades before the current Rohingya humanitarian crisis, the Shan, Karen, Kachin, Mon, Chin and even the ethnically Burman majority fled their homes seeking refuge in Thailand. Some groups, like the Shan, have their own armies, and self-governing areas have emerged along the border.

Those residing on the border now have grown children, who in turn have children themselves — an entire generation coming of age without ever experiencing life outside of a military zone. Numbenchapol is set to explore this topic in his upcoming documentary, No Boys Land, shot entirely on his own because of the heightened sensitivity toward visitors entering the zone. It is tentatively set for release at the end of 2018.

It’s little wonder that Numbenchapol felt compelled to tell this story, as his first two features — Boundary and By the River — also focused on people living in the margins of society. The former, released in 2013, was initially banned by the Thai government due to its charged subject matter: the feud between Thailand’s two political factions, the Red Shirts and Yellow Shirts, and the impact of this misplaced nationalism on the villagers living along the Thai-Cambodian border.

The ban was lifted after Numbenchapol agreed to mute the soundtrack for a few seconds when the royal family is mentioned; he insists that any Thai would recognize the central message of Boundary through its Thai title, a proverb about the need for opposing sides to understand each other.

Later in 2013, By the River premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival, winning a Special Mention Award. It is another portrait of misery at the margins, this time centering on Karen villagers reeling from the effects of a 1998 ecological disaster involving lead leeched into their river from mines upstream. Lush scenes of rural life play against the haunting suggestion that villagers’ lives were sacrificed for financial gain.

Pailin Wedel, a Thai-American journalist and documentary filmmaker, says the art house tone of Numbenchapol’s work sets it apart from traditional documentaries that focus less on aesthetics and more on distilling information. His approach to editing, she continues, “borrows a lot of narrative storytelling from the fiction world. … Every one of Nontawat’s documentaries is a visual masterpiece.”

Komtouch Napattaloong, a producer for No Boys Land, also applauds the filmmaker’s inventiveness — and his refusal to back away from taboo topics. “A lot of the subject matter he does is topical and very necessary, and he tackles it in a fresh way,” says Napattaloong. “He’s very consciously trying to do new things with a documentary. He’s very interested in blending fiction and nonfiction.”

A striking example of this genre subversion is Numbenchapol’s latest feature, #BKKY, released last year. The film is a fictional narrative based on interviews with 100 Bangkok teenagers who spoke openly about their fluid sexuality, parental pressures and aspirations. One part scripted story, one part talking heads, it provides an imaginative, revealing look at young people’s lives in the Thai capital. The filmmaker, utterly transparent about straddling the border between fact and fiction, can be heard directing the amateur actors — and he uses the abrupt snapping of a clapperboard to remind audiences they are in the realm of docudrama. His next project, Doi Boy — the story of Shan soldiers he interviewed for No Boys Land who later moved to Chiang Mai to work as male prostitutes — will mark his official foray into fiction filmmaking.

Numbenchapol, a native Bangkokian, came to his interest in film early. His mother recalls that as a baby, he would try to grab the camera from his father during family photo sessions. The son of two academics, Numbenchapol was expected to follow that path; instead, he obsessed over films like Edward Scissorhands, Babe, AI, Gattaca — each featuring a protagonist struggling against the expectations of a predetermined social structure.

In college, he filmed a documentary for his thesis project about a group of friends who were extreme skateboarders. It caught the attention of GTH Studio, Thailand’s most successful studio (before closing its doors in 2016), which provided Numbenchapol with funding to turn it into a longer movie. Later, he worked as a stills photographer for filmmakers, including one of his icons, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, who won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010.

After more than a decade in the industry, Numbenchapol says that No Boys Land comes closest to his ideal: a documentary feature with the aesthetic of narrative film that explores life at the edges. In stark terms, the movie is meant to expose the plight of refugees while prompting Thai audiences to consider what a military-sanctioned reality could look like.

“I am worried about my friends, my love, my family,” Numbenchapol says. “Will they have a destiny like that in the future with a military government structure?” He doesn’t have an answer, nor is it a question he expected to grapple with. But with all of his projects, Numbenchapol’s deep dive into the subject matter breaks through to other layers. “Every time I work on a documentary, it always gives me more than I think,” he says. “It never turns out to be what I expected.”

Almost since the beginning of the commercial crew program in 2010, the old and new titans of the aerospace industry have been locked in a race to the launch pad. Boeing, with five decades of aerospace contracts, represented the old guard. SpaceX, founded in 2002, offered a new, leaner way of doing things.

Through the years, as other participants in the commercial crew program fell away, Boeing and SpaceX remained on course to deliver US astronauts into space. It has not been easy for either company or for their sponsor, NASA. The space agency has only ever led the development of four spacecraft that carried humans into orbit, and three of those programs came in the 1960s, with the fourth and final vehicle in the 1970s—the space shuttle.

As both companies sought to climb this steep learning curve, they have missed deadlines. An original deadline of 2015 melted away after some key members of Congress diverted funds for the commercial crew program to other NASA programs, notably the Space Launch System rocket. But in recent years, Congress has fully funded the efforts by Boeing and SpaceX, and they were told that would yield flights in 2017.

THE FREE SHIPPING REPORT: How this pervasive perk is eating away at margins, and the strategies retailers can adopt to compete with Amazon https://briefnews.eu/the-free-shipping-report-how-this-pervasive-perk-is-eating-away-at-margins-and-the-strategies-retailers-can-adopt-to-compete-with-amazon/ https://briefnews.eu/the-free-shipping-report-how-this-pervasive-perk-is-eating-away-at-margins-and-the-strategies-retailers-can-adopt-to-compete-with-amazon/#respond Fri, 23 Jun 2017 23:37:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-free-shipping-report-how-this-pervasive-perk-is-eating-away-at-margins-and-the-strategies-retailers-can-adopt-to-compete-with-amazon/ Shopping Online MoreBI Intelligence

Amazon Prime’s free two-day shipping has led to an industry paradigm shift. Online retailers — small and large — are increasingly offering the perk to keep from losing customers to the behemoth marketplace. But free shipping comes at a steep cost: Rising shipping expenditures are eating away at retailers’ margins.

Larger retailers that can better afford to eat the cost of free shipping are battling to gain an advantage over Amazon. But most retailers, particularly small ones, lack the resources necessary to compete with the massive online retailer. This has set off a race in the logistics industry: Large logistics providers are creating new services for small retailers, while logistics startups aiming to address the same market are growing in numbers.

In a new report, BI Intelligence weighs the costs and benefits of free shipping for retailers and analyzes the effects of the perk on the industry. It assesses the technologies that could become commonplace as retailers and logistics providers fight rising shipping costs. However, implementing a cost-effective free shipping strategy can be difficult, so the report also discusses various techniques that both small and large retailers can use to make free shipping work for them.

Here are some key takeaways from the report:

  • Small and large retailers alike are turning to free shipping to better compete in an Amazon-dominated market. But rising shipping expenditures are eating away at retailers’ margins — even Amazon reported in 2016 that its shipping costs jumped 40%.
  • Small retailers face even more challenges than their larger counterparts, as they often lack the resources to invest in supply chain improvements and can’t benefit from the generous shipping discounts large retailers receive. Typically, retailers can get discounts of up to 70%, while boutique shops may only see discounts of about 5%.
  • Both retailers and logistics companies will likely invest in technologies that help to lower shipping costs. These include augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI), and radio frequency identification (RFID) tracking. Additionally, as logistics providers continue to raise shipping rates, large retailers may move some logistics operations in-house.

In full, the report:

  • Provides an overview of how consumers’ demand for free shipping is shaping the retail and logistics industries.
  • Examines the technologies that may be implemented as a result of  companies seeking to lower shipping costs.
  • Discusses various strategies to implement with free shipping for small and large retailers.

SCHLUMBERGER: Rising costs hurt margins (SLB) https://briefnews.eu/schlumberger-rising-costs-hurt-margins-slb/ https://briefnews.eu/schlumberger-rising-costs-hurt-margins-slb/#respond Fri, 21 Apr 2017 12:40:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/schlumberger-rising-costs-hurt-margins-slb/ SchlumbergerReuters/Atef Hassan

(Reuters) – Schlumberger NV said on Friday a ramp up in drilling activity in North America boosted pricing for its oilfield services, but the cost of reactivating equipment idled during the slump in crude oil prices gutted margins.

Oil stabilizing above $ 50 per barrel has encouraged oil producers to resume drilling after a more than two-year lull boosting demand for equipment and services provided by Schlumberger and its rivals.

The U.S. rig count rose more than 25 percent in the first three months of the year, according to data from Baker Hughes Inc.

“In the first quarter, the North America land market continued to strengthen in terms of both activity and pricing, leading us to begin accelerating deployment of idle capacity for multiple product lines,” Schlumberger’s Chief Executive Officer Paal Kibsgaard said.

The world’s No.1 oilfield services provider said revenue rose 5.7 percent to $ 6.89 billion in the quarter ended March 31, but its cost of revenue increased 11.3 percent to $ 6.08 billion.

The company’s pre-tax operating margin fell to 11 percent in the latest quarter, from 13.8 percent a year earlier.

Revenue from North America increased to $ 1.87 billion in the first quarter, up 6 percent from the preceding quarter and 27.8 percent from a year earlier.

However, international revenue fell 7 percent to $ 4.92 billion from the preceding quarter, hurt by “greater-than-expected seasonal decline in activity and sales, particularly in China, Russia land and the North Sea.”

Schlumberger said production constraints imposed on its project in Ecuador also impacted the results.

OPEC production cuts and economic woes are complicating The company’s efforts to collect $ 1.1 billion from Ecuador’s state-owned Petroamazonas.

Schlumberger has invested $ 3 billion in Ecuador to-date under contracts signed earlier this decade to expand production at two oilfields, out of a total investment that was to reach $ 4.9 billion over 20 years.

Net profit attributable to Schlumberger fell to $ 279 million, or 20 cents per share, in the first quarter, from $ 501 million, or 40 cents per share, a year earlier. (http://bit.ly/2ox4Wg5)

Excluding items, Schlumberger earned 25 cents per share in the latest quarter, in-line with analysts’ estimates, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Analysts on average had estimated revenue of $ 6.96 billion.

Schlumberger is the first major oilfield services provider to report earnings and is closely watched for comments on the industry.

Rivals Halliburton Co and Baker Hughes Inc are set to report results early next week.

(Reuters) – Department store operator Kohl’s Corp reported a better-than-expected quarterly profit, helped by higher margins despite a 2.8 percent drop in sales.

Kohl’s shares were up 3.2 percent at $ 43.10 in premarket trading on Thursday.

The company, like rival Macy’s Inc, reported weak sales in November and December as it struggles to overcome stiff competition from Amazon.com Inc and weak demand for clothes and accessories.

However, Kohl’s likely had to discount lesser in the fourth quarter than rivals as it entered the holiday season with low inventories, analysts said.

“We saw improvement in merchandise margin, and our team continued to manage inventory and expenses extremely well,” Kohl’s Chief Executive Kevin Mansell said in a statement.

Gross margin rose to 33.4 percent from 33.1 percent in the quarter, and inventories were down 6 percent.

Sales at Kohl’s stores open at least a year fell 2.2 percent, in line with the average analyst estimate from research firm Consensus Metrix.

Net income fell to $ 252 million, or $ 1.44 per share, in the quarter ended Jan. 28, from $ 296 million, or $ 1.58 per share, a year earlier.

Net sales fell to $ 6.21 billion from $ 6.39 billion a year earlier, falling for the fourth straight quarter. Analysts on average had expected earnings of $ 1.33 per share on revenue of $ 6.22 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. HGTV star Scott McGillivray explains how to avoid the biggest thing that ‘kills profit margins’ when selling your home https://briefnews.eu/hgtv-star-scott-mcgillivray-explains-how-to-avoid-the-biggest-thing-that-kills-profit-margins-when-selling-your-home/ https://briefnews.eu/hgtv-star-scott-mcgillivray-explains-how-to-avoid-the-biggest-thing-that-kills-profit-margins-when-selling-your-home/#respond Tue, 21 Feb 2017 06:14:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hgtv-star-scott-mcgillivray-explains-how-to-avoid-the-biggest-thing-that-kills-profit-margins-when-selling-your-home/ Scott McGillivrayMike Windle/Getty

When selling your home, one objective stands above all else: maximizing your profit.

To make sure you’re earning as much as possible on the sale, Scott McGillivray, the host of HGTV’s “Income Property” and a real estate expert who’s invested in over 100 properties, recommends avoiding one thing that he sees sneak up on sellers again and again: transaction costs.

“Transaction costs in real estate is usually what kills people’s profit margins,” McGillivray told Business Insider. “You can do a great job creating equity or creating value in a property, but if you are not careful with transaction costs, all of your profits are going to go to someone else.”

Transaction fees refer to everything from title insurance costs to penalties for inspection issues, and can run up to 10% of the price of home. The largest percentage of these typically come from a realtor’s commission, which can be between 4% and 6% of the sale price of the property.

McGillivray’s solution: Try listing your home online yourself instead.

Websites such as Zillow, Homebuyer.com, and Owners.com allow sellers to post listings online for free or a small flat fee, eliminating the the middle man. For his own transactions, McGillivray chooses to partner with Owners.com, which connects users with professional agents and provides ongoing support and advice throughout the process, minus the egregious fees.

Of course, there are also cons to the for-sale-by-owner approach.

“The greatest downside [to selling your home yourself] is the demand on your time, and the legal and financial risks. Mistakes may cost you the money you’re trying to save,” Zillow’s blog explains.

If you’re planning to list your home yourself, it’s important to do your homework first. Before putting your place on the market, you’ll want to learn how to properly price it, how to combat scams, and how to attract qualified buyers, among other key factors.

If you’d rather stick with a traditional real estate agent regardless, you can still help maximize your profit margins by creating a great listing that attracts a multitude of buyers.

According to McGillivray, the key to a top-notch listing lies in impeccable photos. He suggests taking updated photos whenever your house looks its best — immediately after a renovation or a fresh coat of paint — even if you’re not planning to sell yet. It could make or break someone’s interest in exploring the listing further.
