With Late Show in reruns last week, Stephen Colbert‘s first opportunity to address last week’s deadly school shooting in Florida arrived on Tuesday night. And he did not mince words. At the top of the broadcast, a solemn Colbert admitted he was “sickened and heartbroken” both by the massacre itself (which resulted in 17 deaths) and the inaction of GOP leaders on gun control. He specifically targeted Marco Rubio, likening the Republican senator to a useless “house plant.”
Colbert struck a more hopeful tone when discussing the “inspiring” students of Parkland, Fla., who “saw their leaders doing nothing and said, ‘Hold my root beer!’
“The adults aren’t cutting it anymore,” he continued, before proposing that the U.S. change the voting laws to prohibit anyone over the age of 18 from filling out a ballot “until we do something about guns.”
Watch Colbert’s impassioned monologue above and then share your thoughts below.

Manchester United have been tipped to rescue Asensio from his Real Madrid nightmare in recent months with the Spain international currently struggling for game time at the Bernabeu.
A bright start to the current campaign – where he bagged back to back stunners in the Spanish Super Cup against Barcelona – had made way to a midseason blip.
Despite Los Blancos struggling, Zinedine Zidane has regularly overlooked Asensio – leading to talk the 22-year-old may be about to turn his back on the club he loves.
And Spanish outlet Don Balon say Manchester United are sure they can succeed where Real failed by getting the best out of the player.
Mourinho is supposedly a huge fan of Asensio.
The player arrived at Real after the 54-year-old’s time at the Bernabeu.
But that has supposedly not stopped Mourinho from wondering what his side may look like with Asensio in his ranks.
Don Balon say Asensio is the chosen player that Mourinho wants should Real come calling for David De Gea in the summer.
And that is something Los Blancos are expected to do.
Their interest in De Gea dates back to three years ago, when Louis van Gaal ruled the roost at Old Trafford.
Real looked to have a deal wrapped up with Keylor Navas heading the other way.
However, the transfer fell through with Real blaming United for failing to produce the right paperwork in time.
Speaking last month, Mourinho urged United to tie De Gea down to a new contract.
“The option? It’s obvious that we’re not going to let the option disappear,” he said, referring to the club’s option to extend the player’s contract automatically by a further year.
“A goalkeeper like he is and a club that wants to be better and better and better, we are not going to let that year option go away.”
Chelsea are set to overhaul their squad at the end of the season with the Blues currently misfiring under Antonio Conte and in sore need of a revamp.
Last night’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth made for horrific viewing, with Conte’s men put to the sword by their Premier League counterparts in front of a hostile Stamford Bridge crowd.
And Spanish outlet Diario Gol claim that Hazard is aware of one transfer set to take place come the end of the season.
The Belgium international has supposedly told Chelsea team-mate Morata that Real Madrid’s Asensio is likely to sign.
The player has endured a frustrating campaign over in La Liga.
Asensio was in fine fettle at the start of the campaign, scoring two stunners in back to back wins over Barcelona.
But things have gone wrong since with the Spain international now on the fringes of Zidane’s squad.
And Diario Gol say Hazard thinks Asensio will be strutting his stuff alongside compatriot Morata next season.
However, there’s a catch.
Asensio will supposedly land at Chelsea as part of a deal that will see Hazard move in the opposite direction.
The 27-year-old is one of Zidedine Zidane’s top transfer targets for the summer.
And Hazard exchanging places with Asensio will sweeten the deal for Chelsea.
However, Hazard is not the only player who could be joining Real come the end of the season.
Los Blancos also retain an interest in goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, whose own Chelsea future is shrouded in uncertainty.
Manchester United’s David De Gea, Tottenham’s Harry Kane and PSG’s Neymar are also on their summer wishlist.
Riyad Mahrez put the Foxes ahead after 37 minutes with his sixth league goal of the season but Malian defender Molla Wague, making his first Premier League start on loan at Watford from Udinese, equalised just before the interval.
Abdoulaye Doucoure, returning after a one-match suspension, won it after 65 minutes with a shot that went in off Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
“Commitment, attitude and spirit are the most important things, more important than everything. After going 1-0 down we showed all these things,” said Silva.
“We have shown it from the first moments of the season. We didn’t perform like we should have the last two games. But it was a very good game against a good team.”
It looked unlikely to turn out that way when Mahrez nodded home Marc Albrighton’s left-wing cross in the 37th minute.
Richarlison might have put Watford level almost immediately when he took Andre Carrillo’s pass and went round Schmeichel, but the angle was too narrow, his shot hit a post and it seemed Watford were heading for defeat again.
But when Leicester failed to clear a corner in the final minute of the first half, Wague ran onto a rebound off Wes Morgan to hit the ball home from a couple of yards out.
After 65 minutes Schmeichel was rooted to his line as Tom Cleverley’s free kick found Doucoure beyond the far post. The midfield player’s shot might have been going in anyway, but Schmeichel’s attempt to save made sure that it did.
After Cleverley had missed a good chance to seal the points, robbing Ben Chilwell before shooting past the far post, Watford goalkeeper and acting captain Heurelho Gomes kept his side ahead in a frantic final five minutes with late saves from Morgan and substitute Leo Ulloa.
“Heurelho performed really well and he is a leader in our dressing room,” said Silva.
Leicester manager Claude Puel was disappointed that Watford’s goals had followed a corner and a free kick. Leicester have now conceded more goals – 13 – than any other Premier League sides from set plays.
“Until this afternoon we played with good energy and positivity,” said Puel. “But we have to correct our defending from set pieces.”

GOP Sens. Marco Rubio and Mike Lee and White House advisor Ivanka Trump scored a partial victory in the form of an expanded child tax credit in the newly passed Senate Republican tax bill, which cleared the chamber on Saturday.
But an amendment sponsored by the senators to enlarge the credit for millions of poor families was voted down, despite earning bipartisan support.
The tax bill, which cleared the Senate with 51 Republican votes early Saturday morning, doubles the current non-refundable tax credit from $ 1,000 annually per child to $ 2,000, which is more generous than the $ 1,600 credit passed by the House last month.
The Rubio-Lee amendment would have raised the corporate tax rate from 20% to almost 21% to pay for an $ 87 billion expansion of the credit over 10 years to millions of low-income Americans, many of whom don’t pay federal income taxes and thus don’t benefit from the non-refundable credit.
While the failed amendment is a blow to the two GOP lawmakers, the $ 2,000 credit is a win for them and for Ivanka Trump, who has spent several months lobbying Republicans, business groups, and advocacy organizations to support the proposal.
Experts say the child tax credit is a crucial measure to offset the tax plan’s elimination of personal exemptions, which currently provide significant relief for middle-income families, as well as measures that will raise taxes on millions of middle-class Americans.
“At the same time as they have these massive tax cuts for the richest people in the country they actually increase taxes for a lot of working and middle class people, and so I think they see the child tax credit as a way to try to address that,” Chuck Marr, director of Federal Tax Policy for the left-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, told Business Insider last month.
But Marr and other experts argue the expanded credit is regressive because it will stay capped at $ 2,000, rather than being adjusted for inflation. High-income families will ultimately benefit the most from the expanded credit because they’ll be able to cash in on the full amount.

Despite convincing nine Democrats and 20 Republicans to vote for the Rubio-Lee amendment, it failed, with 29 voting in favor and 71 against. While Republicans refused to raise the corporate tax rate above their goal of 20%, Democrats rejected the amendment as being insufficient for poorer families. They also feared that voting for it would lend support to a larger plan they reject.
“With this amendment, Senators Rubio and Lee fall short of meaningful relief for millions of vulnerable American families,” Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, said during a speech on the Senate floor. “Democrats want to provide strong, permanent protection for all working families rather than temporary protection for some … the best way to protect these families is not through a puny band-aid approach.”
Wyden’s spokesperson argued that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would have removed the amendment from a final bill even if it had received sufficient bipartisan support.
“No amendment can fix this bill and we have no intention of giving Rubio an artificial win … on an inherently partisan bill that will ultimately raise taxes on 87 million middle class Americans,” Wyden’s spokesperson, Rachel McCleery, told the Washington Post.
Rubio said during a floor speech on Friday that he also wanted the amendment to go further than it did but implored Democrats to agree to the compromise measure. He also criticized Republicans’ refusal to budge on the corporate tax rate.
“Twenty percent is the most phenomenal thing we’ve ever done for growth, but if you add .94 percent to that, it’s a catastrophe?” he asked his colleagues. “If we’re not willing to do something as small as this, we’re not willing to do anything for working people in this country. And that’s an enormous problem.”

Silva became Watford manager in the summer and has led his side to eighth in the Premier League after 13 games this season.
His great start at Vicarage Road has already led to other clubs being interested in his services.
Everton wanted Silva to replace Ronald Koeman, who was sacked by the Toffees last month.
However, Watford rejected all approaches by Everton, who now look set to appoint former England boss Sam Allardyce as Koeman’s replacement.
Former Chelsea midfielder and ESPN FC pundit Craig Burley has predicted this week’s Premier League results.
The Scot believes Jose Mourinho will have too much for his Portuguese compatriot.
“I love what Marco Silva’s doing,” Burley said.
“I think he’s big shout for the Everton job but it doesn’t look like he’s going there.
“However, the extra quality from United going forward and the fact they can’t let (Manchester) City get any further away.”
But Dyer disagrees and thinks Silva will prove his worth against the Red Devils.
“Watford don’t want to let Marco Silva go,” he said.
“That’s why he’s not going and that’s why they’re going to beat Manchester United, because they are fantastic.”

President Donald Trump paused during a lengthy statement to the nation about his big Asia trip to take a sip of water, and the internet went wild.
It drew many comparisons to a moment when Republican Sen. Marco Rubio paused his rebuttal to the 2013 State of the Union to grab a water bottle, which Trump had mocked at length during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Trump paused his speech and searched for water, but could not find any. An aide appeared to point him in the direction of where a bottle of water was located, which he then picked up and drank from. Later in the speech, he took another sip from the bottle.

During the 2016 Republican presidential primary, Trump dramatically drank a bottle of water at a rally to mock Rubio’s 2013 moment.
Trump pulled a bottle of water out of his pocket and exclaimed, “It’s Marco!”

Shortly after Trump’s sip, Rubio joined in the fracas.
“Similar, but needs work on his form.Has to be done in one single motion & eyes should never leave the camera,” he tweeted. “But not bad for his 1st time.”
In 2013, after Rubio’s moment, Trump tweeted that Rubio was “being crucified by the media for drinking water during speech!”

A more consistent and successful September from the Marco Estrada that Toronto Blue Jays fans are accustomed to seeing pitch probably was the difference between him staying with the team versus testing free agency this winter.
The Blue Jays announced through a news release Wednesday afternoon they have signed the 34-year-old right-hander to a one-year extension worth $ 13 million US.
Estrada, who had pitched to a 5.17 earned-run average prior to the July all-star break, has won two of his three starts this month with a 1.80 ERA and allowed only 10 hits and four walks over 20 innings while striking out 14.
Estrada sports a 3.75 ERA in his past 10 starts, a far cry from a dismal 10-start stretch in June and July during which the native of Sonora, Mexico posted a 8.87 ERA and 1.019 on-base-plus slugging percentage against.
He had been vocal about his desire to remain in Toronto and reiterated that after his last home start on Sept. 11, a 4-3 win over Baltimore in which he allowed two runs.
“If I can show that I’m back to my normal self, what I’ve done for the last few years for these guys maybe they’ll want me back,” Estrada said. “I’m hoping to come back. I’m trying to show them I’m still that guy. I’ve just got to keep pitching well.”
He has 170 strikeouts this year, surpassing his previous career high of 165 from 2016.
Estrada is 9-8 with a 4.84 earned-run average over 31 starts this season and 31-25 with a 3.81 ERA over three combined years as a Blue Jay.
Home runs have always plagued Estrada but more this season than his previous two as a Blue Jay. He has surrendered 29 long balls in 2017 compared to 23 last season and 24 in 2015 over similar innings pitched.
Estrada is finishing out a two-year, $ 26-million deal he signed after his breakout first season in Toronto when the former swingman set career highs in victories (13), ERA (3.13) and WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) of 1.04.
The popular hurler is expected to slot in behind Marcus Stroman, Aaron Sanchez and J.A. Happ next season.
In 533 2/3 innings with Toronto, Estrada sports a 3.81 ERA and 1.175 WHIP.
He was acquired in trade with Milwaukee on Nov. 1, 2014 when then-general manager Alex Anthopoulos sent first baseman Adam Lind to the Brewers in return.
Estrada starred on the mound in each of the past two years in the post-season, posting a 2-1 record and 2.33 ERA over three starts in 2015, the lowest ERA among all starters in those playoffs.
Last fall, he was even more effective, fashioning a 2.01 ERA in three outings.
