Disneyland Paris: My happiest half marathon run https://briefnews.eu/disneyland-paris-my-happiest-half-marathon-run/ https://briefnews.eu/disneyland-paris-my-happiest-half-marathon-run/#respond Sun, 28 Oct 2018 02:31:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/disneyland-paris-my-happiest-half-marathon-run/

disney

Outside the beautiful Disneyland Hotel (Image: Disney)

I hadn’t been since 1996, when the park was a couple of years old and suitably far removed from Paris per se (in reality under an hour, but thousands of miles away culturally).

Then, it was quite the novelty for Britons relishing the thought of having the Disney experience, without having to transport their offspring 4,400 miles away.

This was easily reached within a couple of hours.

Parisians now concede it does indeed make for an enormously fun afternoon and snap up annual passes in droves.

Britons are a tad more leisurely, taking a day or two, arriving via Eurostar at the gates.

Despite this accessibility, the lure that sealed the deal for me was the half marathon and an endorsement from two running buddies who’d completed it the year before.

So on a balmy September eve, I arrived to a fanfare of fireworks bursting from behind Sleeping Beauty’s castle. I’d already left the real world behind, helplessly drawn under Disney’s spell.

Outside the beautiful Disneyland Hotel; a grand dusty pink Victorian pile with ornate fountains, vast lobby and grand staircase, guests sport costumes of all sorts from Cruella de Vil to Snow White. All were in running shoes, displaying medals for the 5k race, the first of three of the Magic Run weekend.

I spot world record holder Paula Radcliffe, already showered and in jeans while others still roll over the finish line. She’s one of the Magic Run weekend ambassadors and brings her family who all take part in either the three adult races; 5k, 10k and half marathon or the kids’ races; the 100m 200m and 1k.

I keep my legs moving by walking miles through the park and studios.

I skip the Tower of Terror to take a gastronomic spin as seen from the eyes of rat on the Ratatouille ride. To calm my pre-race nerves and post-ride tum, I climb aboard a frigate to sail the Caribbean’s waters finding myself in shoot-outs among boisterous rum-fuelled pirates counting their loot.

Outside, I greet Mary Poppins and Bert, complete with impressive East End accents. And despite our ages we’re not in the slightest embarrassed waving at Mickey Mouse and Peter Pan.

The night before the race, I fuel up on a huge plate of stupendous pasta and drink as much water as I can stomach.

It’s dark as I leave the hotel at 6am to merge with another 9,000 runners heading silently to the pens in Walt Disney Studios.

After an hour Cruella de Vil, snug in warming faux-Dalmatian fur and red gloves, waves us off, warning us to beware of villians.

There’s a misty velvety purple light as we cross the gantry amid much fanfare. Along the way, as we gingerly negotiate the smooth bricks of Main Street, we stop for photos along the way with characters such as Maleficent and Mickey Mouse.

Everyone’s a character here. Superheroes are run with princesses and mermaids along the wide Boulevard de l’Europe. I laugh at a woman in a Spider-Man outfit take a nature-break dash into the field of pale corn while a man in a Cinderella frock waits patiently on the verge.

Perhaps they got dressed in the dark. We jog through the village of Magny-le-Hongre, as pristine as Disneyland itself with streets lined by pretty two-storey shuttered houses, and trot around a small lake where I narrowly avoid toppling over a park bench along a gravel path.

Finally, we arrive back in the park, taking the backlot route past dinosaurs and the remnants of a bombed out City of London before passing through Sleeping Beauty’s salmon-coloured castle and onto the finishing straight.

A grin spreads across my face as I approach the line, just as has been there for much of the last 48 hours. I am not alone as I declare this to be the world’s happiest half marathon.

For the rest of the day, I strut proudly with my hefty medal featuring Mickey and Sleeping Beauty’s castle banging against my chest. In fact, I’m feeling so invincible I tackle the Big One; Big Thunder Mountain Railroad roller coaster.

With white knuckles, closed eyes, I let myself be thrown about at great speed. Out into the light, the adrenalin pumping, I realised it was far less traumatic than I thought.

That old Disney magic.

Former Canadian-record holder praises Cam Levins' inspiring marathon https://briefnews.eu/former-canadian-record-holder-praises-cam-levins-inspiring-marathon/ https://briefnews.eu/former-canadian-record-holder-praises-cam-levins-inspiring-marathon/#respond Wed, 24 Oct 2018 05:15:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/former-canadian-record-holder-praises-cam-levins-inspiring-marathon/

On Sunday morning, Jerome Drayton remained at his home a few miles away in the city's west end, while thousands of runners braved near-freezing temperatures at the 29th annual Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

The 73-year-old began the day with a strong grip on the Canadian men's record of two hours nine minutes 10 seconds, a mark that had stood since 1975 but had been threatened in recent years.

"It should have been gone about 30 to 40 years ago," Drayton told CBC Sports over the phone. "To me, it wasn't that fast. It wasn't a world record. I think the record in those days was 2:08-something."

Now battling arthritis in both knees, Drayton doesn't follow track and field much, besides watching the occasional Diamond League meet on CBC's Road To The Olympic Games weekend broadcasts. When Sunday's marathon drew to a close, he was in front of his television watching a movie.

"I switch over to CP24 on the hour to get the news," said Drayton, remembering when he first heard that Cam Levins of Black Creek, B.C., had shattered his record in a time of 2:09:25 in his marathon debut. "I figured he had a good chance of getting my record, based on his 5,000 and 10,000-metre track speed."

Watch Levins break the Canadian marathon record:

In his marathon debut, Cam Levins of Black Creek, B.C., broke Jerome Drayton's 43-year-old Canadian men's marathon record by 44 seconds. Levins finished fourth in the Toronto Waterfront Marathon with a time of 2:09:25. 1:48

Initially, Drayton wasn't disappointed at the news but added, with a laugh: "It would have been nice if he missed it for another year or so."

Confident, strong and relaxed

Levins, who wanted to debut on home soil and specifically in Toronto, pocketed $ 6,000 for placing fourth as the top Canadian men's runner and earned a bonus of $ 43,000 for the national record — $ 1,000 for each year Drayton's mark stood.

From the outset, the 2012 NCAA champion in the 5,000 and 10,000 looked confident, strong and relaxed. Levins had only started transitioning to half marathons last December following ankle surgery in July 2016 that wiped out much of his 2017 season.

Still, Drayton wasn't surprised by the 29-year-old's performance in Toronto, noting British distance legend Mo Farah clocked 2:08:21 in his marathon debut four years ago and placed third in the London Marathon this past April in 2:06:21.

"He seems to know what he's doing, in terms of nutrition and training for the marathon," Drayton said of Levins, who grew to like the longer, more tempo-based workouts of a marathon build compared to speed work on the track.

Arch support came loose

The Portland, Ore., resident, who entered the Toronto race feeling "in a lot of ways" as fit as any time in his running career, averaged about 257 kilometres (160 miles) a week and finished his build running at altitude for a month in Cedar City, Utah.

Unlike Levins' record-setting effort, Drayton's attempt on Dec. 7, 1975, on a rainy day at the unofficial world marathon championships in Fukuoka, Japan, wasn't nearly as smooth, but equally as thrilling.

The 30-year-old was leading late in what he figured was his 10th marathon when he noticed the arch support in his shoes had come loose. Forced to slow down, Drayton quickly realized the problem couldn't be fixed by moving his toes and recalled being passed by a smiling Australian opponent.

5-time marathon winner

"He probably thought I had hit the wall," said Drayton, who was born Peter Buniak before reportedly basing his new name on two runners he admired, one-time Canadian-record holder Harry Jerome and American runner Paul Drayton. "I noticed he was about 50 yards ahead of me and didn't increase his distance, so I went after him, caught him with about a half-mile to go and [won] by about 17 seconds."

You gotta get to know yourself before you can break through as an elite marathoner.— Former Canadian men's record-holder Jerome Drayton

Drayton, who won three titles at Fukuoka and marathons in Boston and Ottawa in between a silver medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, said he was "already long in the tooth" when he lost interest in hard training after the Canadian boycott of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.

Levins, who finished top 15 in the 5,000 and 10,000 at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England, sought the advice of Canadian sports physiologist Trent Stellingwerff in the months leading up to the Toronto marathon on how to properly fuel his body before and during the 42.2 km race.

Drayton, who was known for a high volume of training like Levins, said he would read anything related to health and fitness to help adopt the best training methods.

"It's not enough just to know about the human body as it relates to running," he said. "You gotta get to know yourself before you can break through as an elite marathoner."

Kenyan long-distance runner Joseph Kiprono Kiptum was hospitalized after being struck by a car while leading the half-marathon in Medellin, Colombia, on Sunday.

Kiprono, 30, was moving in on the finish line when he was struck by a car that had ignored closed street signs, according to reports.

According to race organizers, the runner suffered cuts and bruises, although he has now been discharged from hospital.

“Joseph Kiprono was brought in by the emergency staff of the Medellin Marathon,” organizers said, according to the BBC.

“The patient is stable, has multiple contusions and abrasions in soft tissues, has no fractures of any kind, and orthopaedic doctors reviewed him, he is in good health and is out of danger.”

The race was won by Kenya’s Daniel Muindi Muteti in a time of 1:03:45, although it was further marred by the death of amateur runner Juan Camilo Arboleda, 38, who collapsed with heart problems at the finish.

Arboleda was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital. In a tweet, the organizers expressed their condolences to the runner’s friends and family.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge smashed the men’s marathon world record in Berlin, finishing in two hours, one minute and 39 seconds – shaving more than a minute off the previous record.

Eliud Kipchoge sets new world record in Berlin marathon win https://briefnews.eu/eliud-kipchoge-sets-new-world-record-in-berlin-marathon-win/ https://briefnews.eu/eliud-kipchoge-sets-new-world-record-in-berlin-marathon-win/#respond Sun, 16 Sep 2018 13:43:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/eliud-kipchoge-sets-new-world-record-in-berlin-marathon-win/

Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge set a new marathon world record, winning the Berlin race in two hours, one minute and 39 seconds on Sunday.

Organizers initially put Kipchoge's time at 2:01:40, but later reduced it by one second.

The 33-year-old broke the previous world record set in Berlin by fellow Kenyan Dennis Kimetto in 2014 by one minute and 18 seconds.

"I lack words to describe this day," Kipchoge said after becoming the first person to finish a marathon in less than 2 hours and 2 minutes.

"They say you miss two times but you can't miss the third time," he said in reference to his two previous failed attempts to break the world record in Berlin.

The Kenyan defended his 2017 title in the German capital, pulling ahead of other runners early on amid perfect conditions. Mild autumn temperatures and little to no wind gave the runners an advantage over last year, when rain slowed the race.

Berlin debutant Amos Kipruto came second in 2:06:23, followed by a third Kenyan, former world-record holder Wilson Kipsang, with 2:06:48 seconds.

Shogo Nakamura of Japan narrowly missed setting a new national record with a time of 2:08:16 seconds.

Gladys Cherono won the women's race in 2:18:11, a new women's record for the Berlin marathon. The previous track record was set by Mizuki Noguchi of Japan 13 years ago.

The 35-year-old Kenyan said she felt confident going into the race but wasn't sure she would beat favorite Tirunesh Dibaba. Dibaba came third behind fellow Ethiopian Rutia Aga.

Run, Tokyo, Run: How Japan Became Marathon Capital of the World https://briefnews.eu/run-tokyo-run-how-japan-became-marathon-capital-of-the-world/ https://briefnews.eu/run-tokyo-run-how-japan-became-marathon-capital-of-the-world/#respond Mon, 06 Aug 2018 15:26:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/run-tokyo-run-how-japan-became-marathon-capital-of-the-world/ In its 122-year history, the Boston Marathon has never been canceled due to weather. And so it was this past November that Yuki Kawauchi kept up a wicked pace despite cold winds blasting between buildings and freezing rain slapping the pavement. The 31-year-old stayed strong through the finish line to become the first Japanese men’s winner since 1987, beating last year’s champ Geoffrey Kirui of Kenya.

The result surprised race fans who’ve watched for years as East Africans dominated international marathons. For many back in Japan, though, it was about time. After all, the country has a surprisingly rich — and growing — running culture. In fact, according to the Association of Road Racing Statisticians:

Since 2015, Japanese runners have completed more marathons than any other nationality.

From 2005 to 2010, the number of Japanese runners finishing the 26.2-mile challenge jumped from around 100,000 to nearly 600,000. And the country’s share of the worldwide marathon market for amateurs increased from less than 10 percent to more than 25 percent. That puts Japan ahead of the much larger, and also running-obsessed, United States, which had led in market share for 50 years.

The boom in popularity started in 2007 with the inaugural Tokyo Marathon. “That was a complete game-changer,” says Brett Larner, who operates the website Japan Running News and who’s written on the numbers behind Japan’s infatuation with hoofing long distances. Before the Tokyo Marathon, the main mass participation competition for Japanese runners was a race in Honolulu, but that was a bucket list goal for just a handful of athletes. Once Tokyo began hosting a marathon, amateurs flocked en masse to the opportunity.

Ap 18106596954918

In fact, demand was so high — 322,703 athletes applied for the Tokyo Marathon in 2017, while only 35,824 were allowed to run — that other towns and cities in Japan took note. Marathons sprouted up all over the islands, many with more than 10,000 competitors. “Since 2007 the number of races and the size of the races have just exploded,” says Larner. According to his number crunching, Japanese runners accounted for more than 40 percent of worldwide growth in the event from 2006 to 2015. And, he says, there’s still demand to fill.

Yes, that was Kawauchi wearing a panda suit while competing in his hometown marathon before heading to Boston.

Of course, Japanese runners train obsessively for more than marathons. For two glorious days around New Year’s, millions of Japanese plant themselves in front of their TVs or brave early-morning cold to catch all the action of the Hakone Ekiden, a collegiate relay race in Tokyo that’s the country’s most-watched sports event. It has the cultural impact of a Super Bowl and World Series combined.

Japan has a deep history with running. Since the end of World War II, many have relied on the sport. “Marathon running was seen as a worthy and admirable pursuit, embodying the discipline, effort and commitment the country valued and needed to get back on its feet after the devastation of the war,” says Adharanand Finn, author of The Way of the Runner: A Journey Into the Fabled World of Japanese Running.

And what the Japanese hold in particularly high esteem are true amateurs, citizen athletes like Kawauchi. Dubbed the “people’s runner,” the school clerk has no coach or sponsors. Working 9-to-5, he reportedly spends a quarter of his salary on his marathon hobby. His popularity is boosted by a rare flair for the theatrical. Yes, that was Kawauchi wearing a panda suit while competing in his hometown marathon before heading to Boston.

One reason Japanese marathon madness remains semisecret may be because the country’s amateur runners tend not to race abroad, according to Finn. The same goes for elite athletes. “There are so many big marathons in Japan, and [runners] get paid well to race in them by their corporate teams, who are focused on the Japanese fans,” says Finn. The best runners here, he notes, are just as famous and recognizable as stars from soccer, baseball, karate and other sports.

Every season, Larner of Japan Running News sees new races popping up. And so far he finds little sign of slowing demand. He also notes that young women account for the biggest bump of any demographic in the past decade. Japanese women, after all, have done well internationally, winning 2000 and 2004 Olympic marathon gold. Now the hobby is being marketed to urban, financially independent and fashionable working women.

As for the next explosion in marathon running, check out China. In 2011 it had 22 marathons. By 2016 that number had leaped to 328. And in plenty of those venues, competitors don’t have to deal with arctic blasts and driving rain.

“NO ONE buys furniture in a crisis,” laments Konstantinos Vourvoulakis. He and his father used to sell handmade furniture, but as customers became strapped for cash, they shut up shop in 2014. A chatty man with a sunny disposition, he started driving a taxi instead, ferrying tourists around Athens and offering travel tips. But he doubts he will be able to afford a holiday himself any time soon.

Greece’s public-debt woes triggered an economic collapse that lasted longer than the Great Depression in America. In 2009 the new prime minister admitted that budget-deficit figures had been understated for years, and were perhaps double those originally reported. Ratings agencies downgraded its debt. Interest rates surged. In 2010 the government turned to the euro zone and the IMF for help. Their loans had strings attached: that Greece implement deep spending cuts and structural reforms.

Roger Federer shocked by Kevin Anderson in 5-set marathon match at Wimbledon https://briefnews.eu/roger-federer-shocked-by-kevin-anderson-in-5-set-marathon-match-at-wimbledon/ https://briefnews.eu/roger-federer-shocked-by-kevin-anderson-in-5-set-marathon-match-at-wimbledon/#respond Wed, 11 Jul 2018 18:15:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/roger-federer-shocked-by-kevin-anderson-in-5-set-marathon-match-at-wimbledon/

Kevin Anderson produced an astonishing fightback from two sets down to beat eight-time champion Roger Federer 2-6 6-7(5) 7-5 6-4 13-11 in a quarter-final cliffhanger at Wimbledon on Wednesday.

The big South African's hopes looked forlorn as Federer skipped through the opening two sets on Court One with his usual panache but he turned the match on its head to cause the biggest shock yet in a tournament full of upsets.

It was his first win against Federer at the fifth attempt and means he is the first player representing South Africa to reach the semi-final here since Kevin Curren in 1983.

Eighth-seed Anderson, 32, saved a match point in the 10th game of the third set and grew in confidence against an increasingly-ragged Federer who had won the first set in 26 minutes.

He won the third set to snap Federer's 34-set winning streak at Wimbledon and Federer was clearly shaken as Anderson dominated the fourth set to drag the 20-times Grand Slam champion into a decider.

Six times Anderson was required to hold serve to stay alive and each time he was equal to the task.

Federer eventually cracked at 11-11, double-faulting to hand Anderson a break point which he converted when the defending champion hit a weary-looking forehand halfway up the net.

Anderson stayed cool and sealed victory on his first match point with a powerful first serve which Federer could only return into the tramlines.

Djokovic through

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic shrugged off a second-set slump to reach a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time since 2016 by beating Kei Nishikori 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Djokovic wrested back the momentum for good after coming from 0-40 down at 2-2 in the third set to hold serve, and then breaking his Japanese opponent in the next game.

The three-time Wimbledon champion was broken in the opening game of the fourth set, but won the next four games and broke again to clinch victory.

Djokovic looked in control in the first set. But he grew frustrated after failing to capitalize on three straight break points in the third game of the second set and was given a code violation after slamming his racket into the ground.

When Nishikori then bounced his own racket against the court in the fourth set without being given a warning, Djokovic yelled out "double standards" toward the umpire's chair — drawing boos from the Centre Court crowd.

That didn't seem to affect his focus, though, and neither did a time violation he was given when serving at 4-2, 30-30 in the fourth set.

Djokovic secured that game with a forehand winner, then saved two game points on Nishikori's serve before converting his first match point with a forehand down the line.

He next faces two-time champion Rafael Nadal or fifth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro in his first Grand Slam semifinal since the 2016 U.S. Open. Nadal won the first set 7-5.

Canadian hopes alive

Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski is heading to the Wimbledon semifinals in women's doubles.

The Ottawa native and partner Yifan Xu of China, the tournament's sixth seeds, defeated the unseeded pair of Bethaine Mattek-Sands of the U.S., and Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in a quarterfinal.

It marks the best women's doubles showing at a Grand Slam for the 26-year-old Dabrowski, who advanced to the quarterfinals with Xu at the 2017 U.S. Open and 2018 Australian Open.

Dabrowski and Xu will face No. 12 seeds Nicole Melichar of the U.S. and Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic in the semifinals.

Dabrowski has won two Grand Slam mixed doubles titles — the 2018 Australian Open with Mate Pavic and 2017 French Open with Rohan Bopanna.

Pavic and Dabrowski, the top mixed doubles seeds, lost in the third round at Wimbledon.
