https://briefnews.eu/manson-follower-responsible-for-brutal-torture-murder-recommended-for-parole-in-california/#respondSat, 05 Jan 2019 08:10:35 +0000http://briefnews.eu/manson-follower-responsible-for-brutal-torture-murder-recommended-for-parole-in-california/ Robert Beausoleil, an acolyte of cult leader and mass murderer Charles Manson, has been recommended for parole after serving nearly 50 years in prison for murder – a decision that has infuriated a relative of his victim.
A California parole board said on Thursday that Beausoleil, 71, was suitable for release. He is currently serving a life sentence for his participation in the sadistic 1969 murder of musician Gary Hinman, who was tortured for three days before being killed. The convicted killer has previously been denied parole 18 times.

Beausoleil’s attorney insisted that his client was a changed man.
“In my view, [he] hasn’t been dangerous in decades,” Jason Campbell told CNN. He described Beausoleil as a “very conscientious, thoughtful, and introspective person” who “has spent the last 50 years gradually growing and improving himself.”
Not everyone is rooting for Beausoleil’s release, however.
Hinman’s cousin expressed disappointment over the decision.
“I don’t understand why you would let someone out who has committed such a gruesome crime. Do you want him walking down the street next to you? This is a matter of public safety,” Kay Hinman Martley said.
There are still two major hurdles that Beausoleil must overcome before he can secure his release. The Board of Parole Hearings staff still need to review his case. If they sign off on his parole, the final decision rests with California Governor Gavin Newsom.
In the late 1960s, Manson and his followers were responsible for a string of brutal murders as part of a plot to ignite a race war.
Beausoleil, however, was not involved in the group’s notorious murder of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six others.

One of them was stabbed more than 100 times. Another body was hung from a living room ceiling.
The killings were carried out by four members of a “once peaceful cult” known as the Manson Family, headed by ex-prisoner Charles Manson – said by those close to him to be “a monster beneath the surface”.
Now, for the first time, ITV will show unseen footage in Manson: The Lost Tapes, which must rank as one of the most chilling true crime documentaries you will ever watch.
Even though these hideous murders happened in the US almost 50 years ago, these extraordinary testimonies taken from those who were part of the murderous cult are as compelling as they are disturbing.

The late film-maker Robert Hendrickson was granted exclusive access to the group on Manson’s ranch just weeks after the murders were committed, interviewing members who were not directly involved in the killings.
His original film was released in 1973 but banned by a judge.
The archive footage has now been unearthed by British producer Simon Andreae and his two-part exposé features excerpts from 100 hours of the original, astonishing, footage.
From the outset, cult member Sandra Good sets the tone. As she runs her hand down a large bladed knife, she tells Hendrickson, “Whatever’s necessary to do, you do it. When somebody needs to be killed, there’s no wrong, you do it. And you move on and you kill whoever gets in your way. This is us.”
These cold words are uttered without remorse. During the making of the current film, former cult members Dianne Lake and Catherine Share were confronted with footage of their younger selves which took them straight back to a very disturbing period of their lives.

Dianne joined when she was 14 and, like many of the other youngsters in “the family”, had come from a difficult background.
“My mom and dad were not the warm, fuzzy, hugging variety. They really weren’t,” she says.
“I suppose I was looking for some affection… for a place where I was really loved.”
Recalling her arrival at the ranch, she says: “I walked in there, up the stairs, and two girls just starting screaming my name,‘Dianne! Dianne! Charlie, Dianne is here!’ “[The warmth of the welcome] was magical, the whole way it unfolded. It was like it was meant to be.”
Manson, who at 32 had spent more than half his life in prisons and institutions following a string of violent crimes including robbery and the rape of a young boy, was busy convincing members that he was a type of Jesus figure.
“It worked,” says Dianne.

“We did kind of think of ourselves as his disciples.”
When men joined the cult they were welcomed with sex by the young women.
Dianne recalls: “We were just having one of our get-togethers. You know, some music, that sort of thing.
We were sitting in a group, all naked. Then there was a knock at the door.
It turned out to be Paul Watkins [a new cult member]. Nancy and I just made him feel welcome. We encouraged him to have sex with us.”
Watkins, in footage from the 1960s, says: “Charlie told me they were my girls. They did look beautiful. He said he couldn’t handle them all by himself… It was the summer of ’68.”
He also revealed how, when it came to free love, Manson was the main attraction: “He said the whole universe was one great big ****.
Everything. He said it was everything… That’s all they ever did, was try to get Charlie to make love to them… Everything that you could possibly think of was done.”
The film shows his acolytes living on a diet of sex, scavenged food and drugs administered by Manson.
But there was glamour too. Dianne recalls: “Dennis Wilson, the Beach Boys drummer, once turned up in his Rolls with all these girls that he’d picked up hitchhiking, [who] were excited to be introduced to Charlie.
“There was a mutual admiration going on between Charlie and Dennis. They were both wild, they liked women and listening to music.
Dennis was kind of looking for spiritual guidance and I guess Charlie fitted the bill.”
DENNIS would later invite Charlie “and his family” to move in with him but this didn’t please the other Beach Boys.
“Dennis moved out of the house and we had to as well!” recalls Dianne, explaining how they all came to arrive at the ranch where the murders would be planned.
The 14-year-old’s adventures in free love took a dramatic turn for the worse when she discovered Manson’s dark side.
“When I first met Charlie, he expressed his love and adoration for me. It was a high, it was magic, love and joy. I stayed with Charlie because I wanted that again and again and again,” says Dianne.
But he subjected her to a brutal sexual assault. “I was feeling kind of neglected and I wanted him to make love to me,” she says.
“We went to a different part of the ranch and a gypsy caravan. But instead of making love to me he sodomised me, he raped me.

He was saying, ‘This is the way we do it in prison’. “It was more than just a rejection, he abused me, he hurt me. It was like, ‘Don’t you dare ask me for sex’ kind of response. I never asked him to make love to me again. Never.”
Catherine Share, nicknamed Gypsy, looks back on taking LSD administered by Manson: “I wasn’t aware of the fact that he was taking less or none at all,” she says. “I was aware of the fact that he always seemed like he was in control and I was not.”
Dianne also took acid with the cult and says, “I remember one trip when I crawled into the bus. And I swear to you, I thought I could see through the bus, like it was glass and could see through it out into the trees. And I remember seeing the forest, watching the trees grow and flowers bloom. That’s the kind of stuff that would happen when you took LSD.”
She adds: “Charlie didn’t take the acid trips with us, he just handed it out. So that gave him even more control. We just bought the whole Jesus thing. And there were probably 12 of us, too. We did think of ourselves as his disciples.”
In the original footage, Paul says: “It’d be more like fear, what we were experiencing. Charlie said that fear was love.
Charlie said that fear, love and awareness were the same thing. “The more fear you had, the more awareness you had, the more love you had.”
Ahead of the horrific events of August 1969, Manson was described as becoming increasingly paranoid and devised a plan – called Helter Skelter after The Beatles’ song – for what to do after a race war that he expected to unfold and place downtrodden black people at the top of society.
“He’d become obsessed with the White Album. Charlie would play it forwards and backwards, over and over again,” says Dianne. “He thought it was sending him a message. It was all crazy thinking.”
The cult was known as Manson’s Family (Image: ITV)
The “family” was trained in using weapons. Catherine says: “He taught us to hold a knife so it was, like, part of our fist and that’s how you do it with a shiv [razor] in prison. How to flick it open… We put oil on it and flicked it open like a switchblade. And it was going to be our ‘forever survival tool’.
“But all the while beneath the surface [with Charlie], there was a monster lurking.”
AND DIANNE adds: “I don’t remember the training really but [Charles] said ‘You stab and then you rip up’. That way you would hit as many vital organs as possible.”
Manson’s horrific plans were becoming more and more obvious. Three months before Manson hand-picked a group of disciples to begin the killings, he confided in Paul about how good it felt to kill.
“He said that one day, up in the mountains of Bel Air and in Beverly Hills, there would be some atrocious murders; that there would be blood splattered over everything. That people would be chopped to pieces and cut up with knives and there would be things written on the walls in blood.”

It was one of the most horrifying events in Hollywood history.
When Charles Manson and members of his cult killed Sharon Tate, the wife of Roman Polanski, and others at their Hollywood home, it send shockwaves through Lala Land.
Taratino’s new movie will explore the hedonistic last days of the 1960s and he has made no secret of which A-list beauty he wants to play the tragic leading lady.
After months of talk, Robbie is set to sign up and “now has the offer and negotiations are underway.”
Deadline reported: “Quentin Tarantino had met with Margot Robbie and asked her to play Sharon Tate in his next film. She now has the offer and negotiations are underway to make it a reality.”
This would reunite Robbie with her Wolf of Wall Street co-star Leonardo DiCaprio once more.
The film will be called Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and is a passion project for the director, although Tarantino has already been accused of trying to sensationalise and profit from the terrible Manson killing spree.
Instead, he has explained that his movie is not directly about the murders which hit headlines across the world.
Tarantino told The Hollywood Reporter: “[It’s] a story that takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood.
The two lead characters are Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), former star of a Western TV series, and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognise anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbour…Sharon Tate.”
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood will be released on August 9, 2019.

Quentin Tarantino‘s Manson Family movie has a new cast member, and a new title. Brad Pitt will now co-star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
The highly-anticipated new film from Quentin Tarantino finally has a name. Previously (and unofficially) known as Tarantino’s Manson Family movie, the new film from the Pulp Fiction director is officially titled Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Leonardo DiCaprio has already been announced to star in the film, and now Variety and others report Brad Pitt has joined the cast as well. Pitt previously worked with Tarantino on Inglourious Basterds.
In a statement, Tarantino described the film as “a story that takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood.” As previously reported, DiCaprio will play a former Western TV star named Cliff Dalton who finds himself struggling to stay relevant in Hollywood. Pitt will play DiCaprio’s longtime stunt double, Cliff Booth. “Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbor…Sharon Tate,” said Tarantino.
Tate was murdered by members of the Manson Family in August 1969. The part of Sharon Tate hasn’t been cast yet, but sources have reported multiple times that Tarantino wants Margot Robbie. Tate’s husband Roman Polanski is said to be a character in Tarantino’s film as well. In the rest of his statement, Tarantino spoke of his excitement for the film:
“I’ve been working on this script for five years, as well as living in Los Angeles County most of my life, including in 1969, when I was 7 years old…I’m very excited to tell this story of an L.A., and a Hollywood that don’t exist anymore. And I couldn’t be happier about the dynamic teaming of DiCaprio & Pitt as Rick & Cliff.”
The film’s new title, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, is likely a call-back to Sergio Leone films like Once Upon a Time in the West and Once Upon a Time in America.
Several other possible cast members for Tarantino’s film have been mentioned in the past, including Tom Cruise and Al Pacino. Tarantino set off a bidding war for the script after he walked away from longtime collaborator the Weinstein Company. Many studios wanted a crack at the film, and Warner Bros. took their desire to woo Tarantino to the next level. The studio had their lot fille dwith cars from the 1960s when Tarantino came in for a meeting, and outfitted a conference room with “vintage furniture from the era and mock posters for the movie.” Ultimately, Warner’s wooing was for naught: Sony snapped up the rights to the film last November.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood opens August 9, 2019.

This past week, Quentin Tarantinoofficially locked downLeonardo DiCaprio for a role in his developing but untitled movie about cult leader and murderer Charles Manson and his “family.” Now one more surprising name has emerged as a hopeful collaborator in front of the camera.
In one of the reports confirming Leonardo DiCaprio’s involvement in the project, an additional piece of information indicated that the Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds writer/director is hoping to land Al Pacino for a role in his movie as well. If Tarantino gets everyone he wants for this movie, this could be an all-star line-up of talent the likes of which we rarely see together in a single project
Variety has the report with this additional detail stuffed in the middle of the story. That’s likely because this is merely indicating that Quentin Tarantino wants Al Pacino in the movie rather than the actor actually being in talks for a role. At this stage, it’s just a pipedream.
So right now Quentin Tarantino already has Leonardo DiCaprio, a notoriously picky actor who hasn’t starred in a movie since his Oscar-winning turn in The Revenant from 2015. But we’ve also heard that he has his sights set on DiCaprio’s Wolf of Wall Street star Margot Robbie to play famous Manson victim Sharon Tate, his Inglourious Basterds star Brad Pitt, and superstar Tom Cruise. That’s one hell of a cast, and that’s not even considering the usual names Tarantino brings into his movies, like Samuel L. Jackson (who hasn’t been mentioned for a role in this movie, but will likely end up having some role.
Again, these are all the actors that Tarantino wants for his movie, but it remains to be seen if he’ll actually get them. The good news is that Tarantino is one of those directors that almost any actor or actress has a desire to work with. So there’s a good chance he could end up with the names he wants.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Margot Robbie discussed the news of her potential involvement in the project, and she said, “Nothing’s official … but I would kill to work with him.” So as long as her schedule allows and the role is a good one to follow her extremely likely Oscar nomination for I, Tonya, it sounds like Robbie will come through. So that leaves Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise still up in the air, the latter being the more picky and difficult to get of the two.
We don’t know who most of these actors would play in the movie, but we also don’t know much about the movie. Details have pegged the film as being about a TV star and his stunt double who attempt to make the move to the big screen in the middle of the politically charged landscape of Hollywood in 1969, right as the Golden Age of Hollywood was giving way to the American New Wave. It also happens to be the time when Charles Manson’s “family” started dominating headlines.
The untitled Quentin Tarantino movie is slated to arrive on August 9, 2019.

Quentin Tarantino has found his lead for his highly-anticipated Mansion Family movie: Leonardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio will reunite with his Django Unchained director for a film set in 1969 against the backdrop of the Manson Family murder of actress Sharon Tate and several other people at her home in Los Angeles. Find more details on DiCaprio joining the Tarantino Manson Family movie cast below.
When it comes to casting Quentin Tarantino’s currently-untitled Manson Family film, names that have been thrown around included Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Now it looks like DiCaprio is the first official actor to board the film. Deadline reports that DiCaprio has signed to star in Tarantino’s ninth film, which is set in 1969 and involves the Manson Family murders.
Per Vanity Fair, the story, set in Los Angeles in the summer of 1969, “focuses on a male TV actor who’s had one hit series and his looking for a way to get into the film business. His sidekick — who’s also his stunt double — is looking for the same thing. The horrific murder of Sharon Tate and four of her friends by Charles Manson’s cult of followers serves as a backdrop to the main story.” Deadline reports that DiCaprio is going to be playing the male TV actor (so, sorry everyone who immediately assumed DiCaprio would be playing Charles Manson).
Tarantino has asked Margot Robbie to play slain actress Sharon Tate in the film, but Robbie’s casting isn’t final yet. The film set off a bidding war after Tarantino parted ways with long-time producers The Weinstein Company following the sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein, with several studios clammoring to get their hands on Tarantino’s script. Warner Bros. went so far as to deck out the studio lot with cars from the 1960s when Tarantino came in for a meeting, and outfitted a conference room with “vintage furniture from the era and mock posters for the movie.” After all that, however, Tarantino signed with Sony.
Not only with this film reunite Tarantino and DiCaprio, it will also be DiCaprio’s first role since winning the Oscar for getting eaten by a cartoon bear in The Revenant. Tarantino is still looking for the second male lead for the film, which means both Cruise and Pitt might still be an option, if a deal can be worked out. After this film, Tarantino next plans to helm an R-rated Star Trek movie, a fact we’re all still having a hard time believing.
The currently untitled Quentin Tarantino Manson movie will open on August 9, 2019.

“Quentin Tarantino takes on Charles Manson!” is such an intriguing headline that it’s not surprising that everyone assumed the Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds director was making an entire film about the infamous murderer and cult leader. However, Tarantino recently clarified that his movie is not specifically about Manson. Rather, his next movie is about the year 1969.
Speaking from a post-screening brunch of potential awards contender The Beguiled (Tarantino was there in support of director Sofia Coppola), the Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight director said of his next project (via IndieWire) “It’s not Charles Manson, it’s 1969.”
This aligns with recent stories that Tarantino’s ninth movie would only feature Manson in a supporting role, contrary to the earliest reports about the film. As was reported earlier this month:
There has been a lot of press that the script focuses on Charles Manson and the murder spree he orchestrated, but I’m told that is akin to calling Inglourious Basterds a movie about Adolf Hitler, when the Nazi leader was only in a scene or two.
This all makes sense, of course. While Tarantino has dabbled with history before, it’s always been from an askew angle, using elements of reality to build a fantasy. Inglourious Basterds is the most obvious example, depicting an alternate universe World War II with a very different ending. It’s easier to imagine him making a movie that takes place in the world of Charles Manson than a Charles Manson movie.
And while the actions of Charles Manson and his murderous followers have kept true crime writers employed for nearly half a century, the people and places that orbited him are just as fascinating. If you want a taste of what to possibly expect from this project now that Tarantino has said it’s about 1969, I’d highly recommend the “Charles Manson’s Hollywood” series on Karina Longworth’s incredible You Must Remember This podcast. Before he was recognized as a psychopath and locked away in prison, Manson ran in a number of Hollywood circles, brushing shoulders with movie stars and rock stars and creating a dense web worth exploring. It’s not clear what or who Tarantino’s movie will focus on, but Hollywood in 1969 was a fascinating place – Old Hollywood standing against New Hollywood in a nation poised for political revolution. This is far more interesting than just a Charles Manson movie.
But first, the film needs to find a distributor. After parting ways with The Weinstein Company following the accusations of sexual assault against Harvey Weinstein, Tarantino began shopping his script around to various studios. When asked to comment, he would only say, “It’s a level playing field.”
The untitled film, which is rumored to count Margot Robbie, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Samuel L. Jackson amongst its ensemble, could film next year.

She joined the harem of women in his cult which was known as “The Family” for two years as he plotted the savage murders that shocked America in 1969.
Lake was not part of the slayings, whose victims included Roman Polanski’s pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate, but she listened as her “family” later described the killings in gruesome detail and hid out with them as police scoured the nation.
Almost half a century later Lake, now 64, is speaking for the first time about Manson after the release of her shocking memoir Member Of The Family, which has just been published.
“He made you feel like you were his one and only love,” she says.

“Yes, there were other girls but we all shared him. He made you feel very special and specially loved.”
Manson, now 82, hoped to spark a nationwide race war with his slayings.
During his trial he carved a swastika into his forehead and since being imprisoned in California in 1969 he has repeatedly been denied parole.
Yet Lake found the bearded sociopath 18 years her senior “cute, impish, you know, fun.”
She is no longer the 1960s flower child known to the Manson family as Snake, whose seduction by the murderous cult became a cautionary tale parents told their teens.
Her pale blue eyes and chestnut hair are much the same, but today Lake is a church-going widowed grandmother with three children.
A special education teacher with a master’s degree she never told her husband of her past and kept the secret from her children – until now.
“It’s time for me to exorcise my demons and to face the truth, as much as I can remember it,” says Lake.

“I was with the Manson family from the age of 14 until my arrest at Barker Ranch aged 16. This is my story and this is my confession.”
Life in the Manson family was never normal.
“They were all mis-fits, looking for affection,” she says.
Their leader, who had sex with his many female followers, claimed to be the second coming of Christ, but Manson’s love-and-peace rhetoric turned to homicidal ravings in a bid to ignite revolution.
He gave knives to every family member and taught Lake stabbing techniques.
Lake claims she knew nothing of Manson’s plans and was left at home when the family went on a two-night murder rampage in Los Angeles in 1969. But she soon learned of their atrocities.
“They gave me the gory details with a certain amount of glee,” says Lake. “I was stunned into silence.”
Cult killer Patricia Krenwinkel detailed the first night’s slayings.

Tex Watson spoke of slaughtering eight and a half months pregnant Sharon Tate, confessing: “I killed her. Charlie told me to. It was fun.”
Then Leslie Van Houten described the second night’s spree.
“I thought that she would say something about how awful it was,” says Lake.

Lake was tragically ripe for seduction when she met Manson in 1967.
The daughter of hippie artist parents, she was an emancipated 14-year-old who lived in a commune and was already smoking marijuana, dropping LSD and having group sex with strangers when she became the youngest member of Manson’s family.

Amazingly it was Lake’s mother who first met Manson and gave him a photograph of the pretty teenager.
Six weeks later Manson spotted Lake at a party in Los Angeles, pulling her close while his female followers stroked her hair and gave her marijuana.
“Charlie made me feel very special and meeting him and his girls was like magic,” she says.
“This is how people are drawn into communities like the family.”
Within hours he led her to the former school bus with the psychedelic decor that served as his living quarters and it was there that they had sex for the first time.
“He took his time to explore my body,” she says.
“Charlie was offering me far more than just sex. He told me I should forget my parents and give up my inhibitions. He made it clear that he wanted me to be part of the group – his group. I felt as if there was no turning back.”
And it turned out to be a life of drugs and brainwashing.
Manson was “extremely intelligent” with the “incredible ability to pick up on other people’s weaknesses and their needs and desires,” she says.
“He preyed on them and he wanted to teach us how to do it too.”
Under Manson’s direction they broke into homes and rearranged people’s furniture to “mess with their minds.”
But the cult leader’s ambitions turned deadly and he compiled a hit list that included Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
Also on the list was Steve McQueen, who had planned to visit Sharon Tate on the night she was killed.
After the murders the Manson family hid out at remote desert ranches and it took two months for police to find them.
Yet Lake remained silent even when threatened with the gas chamber.
“We were arrested in October but it wasn’t until December that I felt comfortable enough before the grand jury to tell them, ‘I’m Dianne Lake. I’m 16 and I want my mummy’.”

She testified against Manson in court.
“My biggest fear was that I was going to succumb to that feeling of loyalty that I had for him and that he was going to mesmerise me but he didn’t,” she says. “The spell was broken.”
The cult members were convicted and given the death penalty, later commuted to life in prison.
A year after the murders Lake was committed to a mental institution – where she was labelled schizophrenic due to her emotional trauma – for “rehabilitation.”
Ultimately taken in as a foster child by police detective Jack Gardiner and his wife, she began healing.
Writing her memoir has proved to be cathartic.
“I feel very unburdened and untethered by the shame of being associated with this person who has become an icon of evil,” she says.
Lake now sees Manson for what he is: “A scruffy little man with an enormous ego who thought the rules didn’t apply to him. He was a fake, a fraud, a pimp and a con artist. And now I am truly free of him.”

Marilyn Manson has postponed nine dates of his “Heaven Upside Down” tour after he was injured onstage in New York Saturday when a prop fell on him. A rep said he will be recuperating at home in Los Angeles but declined to specify the extent of the singer’s injuries.
The postponed dates include Boston, Chicago, Toronto and Houston. The tour will pick up in Grand Prairie, Texas on Oct. 15.
The accident occurred about 45 minutes into the band’s set at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, during their cover of Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).” At the center of the stage was a podium, framed by two giant fake pistols, which Manson began to climb. The podium wobbled dramatically, Manson fell backward and then the prop fell upon him — the band kept playing for several moments until they noticed the singer was not getting up.
Both the house and stage lights remained down for several minutes; roadies placed a dropcloth over the podium. Eventually the house lights came up and an announcer said that “due to injury,” the show was over.
The band’s “Heaven Upside Down” tour launched just two days ago in Maryland and is scheduled to continue through the end of October, lthough it was unclear at press time whether the cancelled dates will be rescheduled ; it was unclear at presstime whether any dates will be postponed due to the injury. The album of the same name is slated for release next week.

Quentin Tarantino has two movies left before he completes his filmography. One of those final films is about the Manson Family murders. The project’s title is unknown at the moment, but Harvey and Bob Weinstein are producing.
Below, learn more about what may be the next Quentin Tarantino movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tarantino is already talking to “A-list” actors about his “unique take on the Manson Family murders.” WME is in the early process of putting together a package to shop around to studios. Two of the actors who’ve already been approached: Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lawrence. Pitt and Tarantino worked together on Inglorious Basterds, while Lawrence was reportedly in the running to play Daisy Domergue in The Hateful Eight. Any actor with ties to the project, though, is in the very early stages. Tarantino is currently putting the finishing touches on his original script. Shooting on the period piece could begin next year, with a summer start date being possible.
The project seems very different from Tarantino’s past work, starting with the fact it’s based on a horrific true story, not just a horrific period in time. Little is known about the script, but one of its stories does follow Sharon Tate, who was murdered in 1969 by Manson and his followers, in Benedict Canyon. According to one of The Hollywood Reporter’s sources, Lawrence isn’t going to play the actress and director Roman Polanski’s wife, who was pregnant at the time of her death. Tate and four others were brutally murdered on the night of August 8, 1969. She shared the home with Polanski, who was in London at the time, and Manson believed the home belonged to a record producer who rejected him. In 1971, Manson and some of his followers were sentenced to life in prison for their murders.
After Labor Day, studios will have the opportunity to acquire the package. Similar to Inglorious Basterds, it’ll be a joint effort between The Weinstein Company and a studio. Universal was their financing and distribution partner on Tarantino’s World War II film. In that instance, he was rewriting history, but how faithful he’ll stay to the story of Sharon Tate and the Manson Family Murders is unclear. Hopefully, we’ll soon have a couple more details on what may be the ninth film from Quentin Tarantino, which sounds like a surprising departure from his past work. The project would bring the filmmaker back to Los Angeles, too, where he hasn’t set a film since his Jackie Brown adaptation. Tarantino depicting this time period in L.A. is probably going to be something else, something next-level, and I already can’t wait to see it.
