  • Investing in Russia after the war with Ukraine could present a surpising upside, said an investor.
  • That's thanks to vast farmlands in Siberia, said Cheah Cheng Hye, co-CIO of Value Partners Group.
  • Chinese investors were already snapping up farmland in Siberia before the war.

Russia may be in the thick of war now — but investing in it may "surprise on the upside" after the conflict with Ukraine ends, a Hong Kong-based fund manager said at the Forbes Global CEO Conference in Singapore on Monday.

"All these vast lands they have in Siberia will be the biggest, most productive farmlands in the world in the next three decades. They will be a food superpower," said Cheah Cheng Hye, co-chief investment officer of Value Partners Group, an asset management firm that manages about $ 7 billion in assets.

Climate change has been negatively impacting crop yields, nutritional quality of major cereals, and livestock productivity. But Siberia is home to some of the world's largest reserves of idle cropland with potential for huge farms, wrote agriculture experts Maarten Elferink and Florian Schierhorn in The Diplomat in 2019.

"Russia could be the key winner of global warming," Cheah said. Over two-thirds of Value Partners' clients are based in China and Hong Kong.

Cheah was speaking about unexpected investing opportunities that could "surprise on the upside."

"Right now, Russia is not good news for investors but look longer-term out," Cheah said.

While Cheah's recommendation may seem like an extreme contrarian trade, Siberia is a huge resource play for investors.

Siberia is a vast region — accounting for about three-quarters of Russia's land area — and home to wide swathes of oil and gas fields and farmlands.

Even before the war, investments from China were pouring into Siberia, with at least 865,000 acres of farmland — or 16% of Siberian land used for farming — sold to or leased as of November 2019 by Chinese citizens, BBC's Russian service reported, using state land register data. 

Moreover, China has not condemned Moscow over the Ukraine war. In February, China approved wheat imports from all regions in Russia, presenting an alternative market for the major exporter of the grain. Trade between China and Russia has surged 31% in the first eight months of 2022.

You won’t have that issue from now on. Google has released an update to Files that introduces support for external storage using USB On-the-Go. If you want to offload photos to a thumb drive, you won’t have to track down third-party software.

The update also lets you see the entire folder structures for storage both on and off the device. You shouldn’t have trouble tracking down a file in an unusual location, or moving it to a specific folder. Simply put, Files is more of a viable alternative to existing managers if you regularly shuttle data back and forth.

Football Manager 2019 has been praised for its accessibility, new features connected to training and the new UI upgrades.

And while there will always be room for improvement, FM19 is shaping up to be a high point for the Sports Interactive series.

Fans have noted the changes made to the game so far, with plenty of feedback always available from the community.

It only takes a few minutes scanning the Steam reviews to show that fans are still craving changes to this and that, with some interested in what might be coming next.

The Express Online recently chatted with Miles Jacobson, the studio director of Sports Interactive, who has helped usher in the next instalment of the popular series.

And we asked a few questions on how Football Manager may change in the future, including if there are any plans for official eSports support.

Fans might be interested to learn that the new Fantasy Draft multiplayer mode is one of the most significant growth areas of the FM series.

Jacobson on multiplayer as a growth area for Football Manager:

“The biggest growth mode we have right now is Fantasy Draft. Career mode, the single-player mode, remains the most popular.

“It’s an online game you play against your friends, but you’re not managing a specific club so, it works much in the same way as Fantasy Football.

“It’s our fastest growing mode, and we have started to see people play that mode competitively as well, which is something very exciting.

“I don’t believe any video game can just declare itself an eSport, it’s the community that decides if it is an eSports or not.

“And I think we are going to see a lot of growth in that area in the next few years.”

The good news for fans who want to see more eSports support for Football Manager is that Sports Interactive is definitely interested.

That doesn’t mean we will see something announced for Football Manager 2019, but the future seems bright for competitive support.

“We don’t have any official tournaments, but we do help a lot of unofficial tournaments out,” Jacobson adds.

“It’s an area that is a growth area for us, and I believe it will be in the future as well.

“Watch this space. That is something for the future, not for FM19.”

Football Manager 2019 is out now on Steam and will remain a PC exclusive for the foreseeable future.

It probably helps to keep the core FM19 experience on one platform – there are other versions available on tablet and Mobile.

Football Manager 2019 Touch is available on PC and Mac as well as high-end iOS and Android tablets and Football Manager 2019 Mobile is available on iOS and Android devices.

The full release of FM19 includes a new match engine and updated player information to reflect the current footballing environment.

Furthermore, access to the Steam Workshop and both the pre-game and in-game editors are all now available.

The good news is that fans who have already started their managerial career on the pre-release Beta can carry their save over to the full game.

De Gea is widely recognised as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

And the Spaniard has had another impressive season for Manchester United despite keeping just three clean sheets.

Mourinho was asked about De Gea’s contract issue and the United boss admitted he has doubts over whether a renewal will be sorted.

“I am not confident,” he told Sky Sports.

”I cannot find the word in English, but let’s see what happens.

“Only the club, David and his people can answer that.

“My comment is only that everyone knows how good he is, how important he is for Manchester United and, if the club want to be better than it is and not worse, obviously it would be very important to keep David.”

Wojciech Szczesny became Juventus’ No 1 stopper this season following Gianluigi Buffon’s transfer to PSG.

But a United insider told The Times: “De Gea played against his future club on Tuesday. Juve are an expert in intelligent deals.

“If United don’t sell him in the summer, Juventus will wait until the end of his contract.”

De Gea has been consistently linked with Real Madrid but a move to the Bernabeu appears unlikely after Thibaut Courtois joined in the summer.

He saw a move to the Bernabeu fall through in 2015 when a faulty fax machine scuppered a deadline-day deal at the 11th hour.

De Gea signed a new United contact less than a month later, ending speculation over his future until now.

In his pre-match press conference at VEB Arena, CSKA’s usual home, boss Viktor Goncharenko mulled the idea that now is perhaps the the opportune time to meet Madrid.

However, Lopetegui was ready for when the question was put to him in his own presser at Luzhniki: “In that case, CSKA, the Russian press and all the people in the stadium must be happy to play us!” came the coach’s wry reply.

In Ramos, Real will be without their leader, who was taken off during their weekend Madrid derby versus Atletico as a precaution. Lopetegui insisted the choice for his skipper to not fly to Russia was his initiative.

“We always have dialogues with any player. Ramos has played more minutes in the Champions League than anyone else,” Lopetegui explained. We need him to play to the end of the season, we need him to be strong. The decision for him to remain at home was my decision.”

Ramos will be denied the chance to return to Luzhniki, the stage for Spain’s 4-3 penalty shootout loss versus hosts Russia in the last 16 of this summer’s World Cup, for which he was also captain.

Lopetegui, theoretically, could and probably should have managed Spain in that match; the 52-year-old was dismissed by the Spanish Football Federation on the eve of the tournament after it was announced he was to take over the outgoing Zinedine Zidane at Real. 

Lopetegui was replaced at the 11th hour by former Real and Spain captain Fernando Hierro, but many believe the disarray of the situation caused Spain’s surprisingly poor showing at Russia 2018. The current Real manager, however, confirmed he has no regrets over how matters panned out.

“I haven’t thought about [that possibility]. I look at Luzhniki Stadium one of the best and most beautiful in the world, and the biggest in Russia,” he said. We are completely focussed on the game, on what we need to do to achieve apart from that, I don’t consider any other possibilities.”

Despite their poor league form, Real have begun their Champions League campaign brightly, recording a 3-0 home win over Roma in their first match, something Lopetegui vowed to repeat versus CSKA.

“Our aim is to continue in the same vein. Every game is difficult in the Champions League. All games are difficult and very important. We know we’re facing a strong opponent, with some good players. Our aim is to win, and to get the 3 points,” he said.

CSKA enter the game having recorded a 2-2 away draw against Czech champions Viktoria Plzen in their first game and sit 4th in the Russian Premier League after nine games. The biggest attacking threat CSKA have in their ranks comes in the form of the league’s top scorer Fedor Chalov, who has 7 goals to his name so far this season.

Perhaps CSKA’s best player last term, Aleksandr Golovin, departed for Ligue 1 side Monaco in the summer, and will not line up in the center of midfield to combat the threat of Luka Modric, the newly-crowned world’s best player, also making his return to the place his Croatia side lost last summer’s World Cup final. Nevertheless, Lopetegui is expecting a competitive match.

“CSKA have a good team right now, they didn’t look in the first round of games against Viktoria Plzen. They have important players back from injury,” he said.

“A big plus for CSKA in this case is that they are able to play with 4 or with 5 at the back and change their formation during the game. It creates an added difficulty for us but it is one we can overcome.”

“We have a great mentality. This is only the second match, the hardest is yet to come. We are playing away, and the fact CSKA have the advantage of playing on their own pitch motivates us more than anything,” Lopetegui added. 

The last meeting between the two was also held at Luzhniki Stadium, ending in a 1-1 draw, Real’s goal that day coming courtesy of Cristiano Ronaldo. Whether Real minus Ronaldo this time around will get the better of CSKA, will be decided on Tuesday night.

Mourinho has endured a summer of discontent when he has been at odds with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward over transfer policy, various players and the media.

And Phelan thinks the former Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid manager’s confrontational attitude is causing many of his own problems, lowering morale in the squad and diminishing the good name of a club with a huge global fan base.

“Any manager of any big institution, which is what is, internationally, you have a role and a responsibility to give out the correct messages,” said Phelan, who was a player, coach and assistant manager under Ferguson.

“You don’t have to avoid conflict, but you certainly have to conduct yourself in a way which is befitting of the tradition of where you’re working, and that’s something you can do by keeping your own counsel and getting on with the job.

“But he [Mourinho] is a completely different character and he expresses himself in a completely different way.

“There are opportunities to say things and there are opportunities to keep it to yourself. He chooses one way, and with that there are consequences in what you say.”

To add to his problems Mourinho could claim the unwanted distinction of the becoming the first United boss since Ferguson in 1992-93 to lose two of the first three League games of the season if they are beaten by Tottenham at Old Trafford tonight (Mon) on the back of last weekend’s shock defeat at Brighton.

And Phelan believes turmoil at Old Trafford is playing into the hands of their neighbours City, who have established themselves as the No1 club in the city and country.

“There is fierce competition within the city,” added Phelan. “If United are at loggerheads within the club, it just helps fuel City’s cause more than anything else.

“That’s something they need to be very careful of, because City are a very big club now and they’re very well run.

“They know how to use certain situations, and unrest across the road helps. It can’t not be a help and they use it well.”

Phelan refuses to accept the notion however that Mourinho is laying the groundwork for an early exit with many people looking at his track record at previous clubs and suggesting he will not last the season – former United star Lee Sharpe has claimed he will be gone before Christmas.

“I don’t think so,” said Phelan, speaking to BBC’s Sportsweek. “You’re the manager of Manchester United, why would you want to leave that situation?

“It probably is delicate right now, in terms of his managerial role, but most things are controlled by results. You’ve got to perform well, get the right results and enjoy the time that you’re there.

“Not many people become manager of Manchester United. Sir Alex had it for a long, long time, then a few have come along since to try to emulate him and make them the champions again.

“It’s something you’ve got to embrace, rather than not embrace, because it’s a fabulous time to be at a football club of that magnitude.”

Mourinho meanwhile has thanked fans for not deserting him in his hour of need and demanded that his players repay their loyalty.

“The supporters were fantastic in both matches for the team, which is the only thing that matters,” he said.

“In my career I was never selfish and thinking about myself, I was always a club man. That’s what I am.

“I am really happy when the supporters show they support the team.

“Against Leicester, you can say it was a normal situation because the team was playing well and was winning.

“But to be supportive of the team against Brighton, where we didn’t play well and lost the match, it gives you a fantastic feeling.

“I hope that feeling, that the players also feel it and that the players they are ready to give them everything they have.”

Despite his current problem, Mourinho remains an inspiration to Mauricio Pochettino, the Spurs boss admitted as he prepared to lock horns with him at Old Trafford.

“I have learned a lot of things,” he said. “For every single manager that is younger than him he was the inspirational manager.

“Of course he is an unbelievable manager and of course the circumstances that happen with myself and happen with different managers is always going to be up and down.

“I have a very good relationship with Mourinho from when I was a manager of Espanyol and I have full respect for him and the club of Manchester United.

“When you are manager, you are always in the spotlight no matter the club. People are always judging you and talking about your decisions. When you win all the people know you are so good, when you lose, everyone knows the manager is wrong. We are so exposed. In all clubs you feel similar pressure.

“So he has been inspirational – but then, like I say, I am younger than him!”

Mourinho is expected to make a raft of changes tonight with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Nemanja Matic, Alexis Sanchez, Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia all set to return to avoid a defeat that would only deepen the early season crisis.
