Lawyer Michael Avenatti, a self-appointed advocate of all women, is facing online wrath after saying that Democrats should pick a “white male” to run for president in 2020, as his arguments would “carry more weight.”

Avenatti, the firebrand lawyer representing porn star Stormy Daniels in her legal case against US President Donald Trump, has faced massive backlash after he told Time in the interview that it takes a white male to beat Trump in 2020. Coincidentally, Avenatti himself fits the bill perfectly.

“I think it better be a white male,” Avenatti said, as cited by the newspaper. The lawyer argued that being a white male himself helped him to represent women, such as Daniels, and mothers of migrant children.

When you have a white male making the arguments, they carry more weight.

Avenatti added that although he does not believe this treatment to be fair, it is presently the case. The lawyer, who has gained prominence for representing Daniels, with whom Trump allegedly had sex in 2006, is considering a presidential run.

The interview was met by a barrage of condemnation on Twitter, with people accusing the lawyer of perpetuating white supremacist stereotypes. The indignation has been bipartisan, voiced both by liberal and conservative commentators.

Some have accused the embattled lawyer of being racist.

“You perpetuated a myth of supremacy, do you get that? Do you understand how that makes nonwhite males feel?” Bakari Sellers, former South Carolina Representative wrote.

In a futile attempt to weather the raging storm, Avenatti took to Twitter himself to respond to criticism. He wrote that he has been an advocate for female empowerment and constantly stresses a need for white men to “step up and call out” other white men for bigotry and sexism in his speeches.

Initially, Avenatti denied that he had even made the remark, calling Time Magazine’s reporting “complete bulls” that took his words out of context.

The magazine, which firmly stood by its report, then published a partial transcript of the interview, leaving Avenatti little room to squirm.

The transcript shows that when asked if he “really” believes that the only person to defeat Trump is a “white male,” Avenatti quite vigorously doubles down, saying that otherwise the Democrats are doomed.

I think if the Democrats nominate anyone other than a white male at the top of the ticket, they’re gonna lose the election. I’d be willing to bet anything. I feel highly confident in that.

The remark could spell a swift fall from grace for the one-time liberal media darling (the CNN made a move to disown him mere hours after the scandal erupted), and cut short his chances as Trump’s 2020 rival, it is far from the only problem Avenatti faces.

On Thursday, The Senate Judiciary Committee asked the FBI to investigate Avenatti and his client, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s gang-rape accuser Julia Swetnick, for fraud, false statements, and obstruction of justice.

Earlier this week, Avenatti was ordered to pay $ 4.85mn in a lawsuit brought by his former legal firm partner.

Manchester United boss Mourinho and his counterpart Conte have traded insults over the last 10 days, with Chelsea’s manager accusing Mourinho of going senile and calling him a “little man”.

That was in response to two barbs from Mourinho who inferred Conte was “a clown” for his touchline theatrics and then brought up his “match-fixing” charge from his days in Italy.

But on his arrival back from Manchester United‘s week of warm weather training in Dubai, Mourinho was quick to resume the verbal slanging match once again.

“I think when a person insults another you can expect a response,” he said. “Or you can expect contempt.

“The first time he insulted me I had a response, a response that I know that  touched the point where he really feels hurt.

“Then he insulted me for a second time but now I change and now [I have] contempt. And for me contempt means the end of the story.”

Mourinho’s comments are the latest in a sparring match which goes back to the United boss taking aim at Conte and Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp.

“Because I don’t behave as a clown on the touchline, it means that I’ve lost my passion?” he said.

“I prefer to behave the way I’m doing it. Much more mature, better for my team, better for myself. 

“I don’t think you have to behave like a crazy guy on the touchline to have that passion.”

Conte responded to Mourinho’s comments before and after Chelsea’s FA Cup showdown with Norwich.

“It’s true I was banned for four months by the sporting justice for failure to report,” said Conte, after Mourinho responded to his “senile dementia” comment by bringing up the match-fixing scandal he was embroiled in.

“Then I asked for a retrial by court and then they declared it nonsense.

“Before you make these kind of comments you must pay great attention, because you show you are a little man.

“In the past he was a little man in many circumstances, he’s a little man in the present and for sure he will be a little man in the future. I consider him a little man and I consider him a man with a very low profile.”

Mourinho and Conte have gone head-to-head four times since they filled the Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge hotseats respectively in 2016.

Chelsea have come out on top on three of those occasions, with Alvaro Morata’s header earning the Blues a 1-0 home win in November.

Mourinho and Conte will come face to face when Chelsea visit United in the Premier League next month.

Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho have been at loggerheads for days following the manager’s suggestion that the Chelsea boss was a “clown”.

The Italian retaliated by claiming Mourinho had senile dementia, having forgotten his previous touchline antics.

Old Trafford boss Mourinho followed that with a jibe about match fixing – hinting at Conte’s time at Siena.

The former Juventus manager then bit back once more, calling Jose Mouinho a “little man in the past, present and the future”.

And Conte has stood by his claims, insisting he regrets nothing about the heated exchange and is awaiting Mourinho’s next rebuttal.

“Do I look like a person who has regrets?” Conte said in his press conference ahead of tomorrow night’s Carabao Cup semi-final clash with Arsenal.

“I don’t think so. 

“We have both said things and we will see what happens in the future.

“He used serious words, said serious words.

“I won’t forget this. 

“This is not a problem for the club, it is a problem with me and him. I stop.”

Conte instead turned his attention to the Carabao Cup clash with  and he expects a thrilling game just like the 2-2 draw last week in the league.

“The last one was an exciting game, for those watching,” he added.

“Tomorrow the game will be very open, both teams wants to try to win and attack and when you have two teams wanting the same things you can have an exciting game. 

“I hope to have a good result. 

“This is the first game, at home, then there is the one away. We want to reach the final, as do Arsenal.”

During an interview with winner Amber Davies’ sister Jade, Piers made it well known that he didn’t approve of Love Island. 

The 52-year-old felt that the show shouldn’t be celebrated for showing its contestants having sex on television. 

Although Jade defended Love Island, saying “it’s not for everyone”, Piers couldn’t hold back and unleashed a tirade on Amber’s sister.

He began: “Do you not wish you’d been celebrating a doctorate in science of something?

“Did she want to get money, get famous or find love? What is her talent?” Piers quizzed. 

As Jade replied that Amber is in musical theatre, Piers wondered if being on a show like Love Island will help her to develop her career. 

However, the debate turned extremely awkward when Jade appeared to take a verbal battering from the fired-up Good Morning Britain presenter. 

“To me,” Piers began, “there is a whole culture in the world of reality television where people will do absolutely everything…”

Co-host Susanna Reid stepped in, defending Amber’s “real talent”, adding that Piers was “a rude man” to which he couldn’t believe his ears, yelling back: “At what?” 

Forgetting his audience, Jade, who is also in musical theatre, snapped back that they share a career on the stage.

GMB viewers were furious at Piers’ tirade, with many taking to Twitter to comment on the awkward interview with one saying: “@GMB If @piersmorgan said in front of me that my sister didn’t have a brain, he wouldn’t have got off so lightly! What a rude, old man #GMB.”

Another added: “@piersmorgan Amber’s young behaved more mature than you. You also forgot that it took two to romp on #LoveIsland #growup #GMB.”(sic)

A third agreed, tweeting: “Totally unnecessary the way Piers Morgan rudely spoke to Ambers sister on #GMB the only person with no dignity on the show is him…”(sic)

Clegg’s party famously promised to scrap tuition fees ahead of the 2010 general election; only for them to be tripled under the coalition government with the Conservative Party. 

After Clegg ferociously slammed Brexit, warning Good Morning Britain viewers not to “trust” Theresa May, his swipe at the Prime Minister didn’t sit well with Piers Morgan, 54. 

“How can we trust you?” he snapped, highlighting the tuition fee controversy. “This great coalition government, you jumped into bed with your political rival which many now see as catastrophic for this country.

“Do you wish, in hindsight, you’d never jumped into bed with David Cameron?”

“I know your trying to foist ever single sin on me, but this is getting ridiculous,” Clegg raged. “Am I responsible because Conservatives got themselves tied up in knots and held a referendum?”

Morgan intervened: “My question was, ‘Do you regret jumping into bed with him with your party, given what many people think was a catastrophic decision during the period you were in bed with David Cameron?” 

“The decision he made was on his own,” Clegg fumed. 

Morgan suggested Clegg should have stuck with his principles, but the former Lib Dem leader claimed he was serving his country and not his party; unlike the Tories. 

Mocking Clegg’s admirable speech, Morgan teased: “You are beacon of cynicism in a beacon of non-cynicism in Westminster, thank god you’re here St. Nick Clegg.”

“Extraordinary man,” Clegg muttered under his breath. “You’re so pompous.” 

“I’m not the one who tripled tuition fees,” Morgan scathed. 

Clegg fired back: “I think you’re being sanctimonious and pompous.” 

The spat comes following a blazing, albeit a little more tepid, row between Chuka Ummuna and Iain Duncan Smith on the ITV show yesterday.
