A massive storm pelted southern states with freezing rain, snow, and ice over the weekend and left over 300,000 people without power across the Carolinas and Virginia.
By Monday morning, 250,000 were still without power, according to PowerOutage.US.
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper warned residents to take all possible precautions against the “mammoth” storm.
“Enjoy the beauty, but respect the danger,” Cooper said during a Sunday morning news conference about the storm, which has caused more than 190,000 outages in the state alone. “Don’t be fooled, this storm is treacherous.”
Some residents heeded Cooper’s advice more closely than others, as the snow cast a troublesome but serene winter wonderland across the state.
See how some southern states fared under the heavy snow and ice.

Queen Elizabeth’s portrait is on the head of the UK’s currency, so it’ll come as no surprise that she’s worth quite a lot.
According to an estimate published by Forbes Magazine back in 2016, the royal’s net worth stands at around $ 530 million (around £400.4 million).
The 92-year-old is the oldest monarch in British history, and is the richest member of the royal family.
The monarch currently lives at Buckingham Palace in London, but owns a wealth of properties across her kingdom.
The British monarchy’s wealth comes from inherited lands and investments.
However, Queen Elizabeth and the royal family’s finances come from a number of sources.
The Queen’s three main sources of income are the Duchy of Lancaster estate, the Sovereign Grant, and her personal property and investments.
The former is a portfolio of land, property and assets, which is held in trust for the Sovereign in their role as the Duke of Lancaster.
In 2018, the assets was valued at £534 million.
The Duchy of Lancaster is held in trust for future Sovereigns, with the net income of the Duchy being paid to the Queen – a value which amounts to about £20 million per year.
This is known as the Privy Purse, and is the private wealth used to fund the rest of the royal family.
A Sovereign Grant, which is issued by the government, is also available for the reigning monarch.
This grant is derived from the profits of the Crown Estate – with 15 per cent of profits being made available. It is based on the revenues in the financial year two years previously.
The annual lump sum covers the cost of travel, security, and staff, as well as the upkeep of royal palaces.
Another source of the Queen’s income is the profits of her own personal assets.
Queen Elizabeth personally owns Balmoral Castle in Scotland, and the Sandringham Estate in the east of England.
The royal inherited the real estate from the father, and has donated particular properties to her grandchildren as wedding gifts in the past.
Prince William, 36, who is second in line to the throne, and his wife Kate Middleton, 36, were given the country home Anmer Hall, in the grounds of Sandringham Estate, following their nuptials in 2011.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge lived in the Norfolk home for the first few years of their marriage, before later moving back to London.
Earlier this year, Prince Harry, 34, who is now the sixth heir to the throne, married American actress Meghan Markle, 37.
Following their wedding, the pair took on the role of Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and received an extravagant gift from the Queen.
The gift took the form of York Cottage, a country house in the grounds of Sandringham Estate.

Late last week, California utility Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) asked the state to approve four lithium-ion battery storage projects. Three of which would be owned and operated by a third party, and one, built by Tesla, would be owned and operated by PG&E itself.
One of the projects—spearheaded by energy company Vistra (which recently merged with Dynegy)—could become the world’s first grid-scale, lithium-ion battery installations to store more than a gigawatt-hour of energy.
Tesla’s project is also huge. It would deliver 730MWh of energy, but Tesla’s contract with PG&E suggests the utility could opt to increase the size of the battery to 1.1GWh.

Imagine a mammoth, grazing 20,000 years ago in the steppe-tundra—a vast and frigid grassland where plants grew slowly under a frigid, low-carbon atmosphere. The mammoth tramples saplings, reducing forest cover and allowing grass to flourish. It devours the grass, leaving room for fresh, new plant life to grow. The mammoth and the grass belong to an ecosystem of dazzling complexity, where every tiny factor plays a role in the exact balance of nutrients, the release of carbon, and the life cycle of every species that lived there.
Dan Zhu is a scientist who studies how land, plants, and animals all feed into the climate. She led a team of researchers that built the closest thing we have to a time-machine terrarium that lets us study the ecosystem the mammoth inhabited: a computational simulation of the tundra they occupied. The results, published in Nature Ecology & Evolution this week, help to explain one of the big mysteries about mammoths: how did such an enormous animal survive in an environment where everything struggled to grow?
We can’t build our own tundra, and the mammoths are long gone. So how do we study this? Imagine you could shrink that tundra and keep it in a terrarium, studying the complexity and understanding the interplay. Make it a time machine too: pause it, reboot it, and fast-forward it through hundreds of years at a time. This magical terrarium would let you play out hundreds of different scenarios, tweaking conditions slightly to see how they influence the ecosystem that develops.

Ubisoft acquired Atlanta-based developer Blue Mammoth Studio yesterday, adding more multiplayer online expertise to its portfolio. As part of the deal, it also now owns Blue Mammoth’s online Super Smash Bros.-esque game Brawlhalla.
“The team at Blue Mammoth Games is expert at developing and running scalable, competitive, multiplayer online games, and they’ll be a great addition to Ubisoft’s network of studios,” Ubisoft NCSA president Laurent Detoc said in a statement.
Ubisoft has several successes in its online multiplayer titles like Rainbow Six Siege, which has attracted 25 million players. Overall, the developer’s Tom Clancy series has around 60 million players across different games in the franchise. And Blue Mammoth’s own multiplayer online indie game has picked up a fan base.
The free-to-play brawler Brawlhalla is one of the top 100 most played games on Steam. It supports online multiplayer, as well as up to eight players locally. It also has features such as single player mode and ranked battles. Blue Mammoth has been cultivating an esports scene for it, partnering with Dreamhack on hosting the Brawlhalla World Championship.
“We’re looking forward to leveraging Ubisoft’s expertise and resources to continue developing and supporting Brawlhalla for the long term, and to benefiting from their help in bringing the game to new players,” said Blue Mammoth founders Matthew Woomer and Lincoln Hamilton in a statement.
Ubisoft also recently snapped up mobile developer 1492 Studio, which specializes in episodic games like Is It Love?

Production is well underway for the last offering of Game of Thrones as cast shoot their scenes and fans speculate on what could happen.
The art director on the programme has now exposed some truths about the upcoming episodes, which may surprise those who watch the show.
Deborah told Game of Thrones fan site Winter Is Coming: “We’re working very hard. [Showrunners] David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] set the bar very high, and every year we have to keep trying to jump over it.
“So at the moment we’re so deep inside of that that I think come the end we’re all gonna be sort of so proud and so thrilled and it will be time to move on.”
“The people are incredible. What we’re building’s incredible. You know, the storylines…bringing this show to an end? I mean, what an amazing sort of opportunity is that? What an experience.”
She went on to comment on the eight season, which will contain only six instalments.
“Even though there might only be six episodes, they’re so mighty and mammoth and just monsters of things to bring to the screen, that from a production design point of view we have been incredibly busy.”
She continued: “We have now got, y’know, teams of people working 24 hours a day, trying to get the build ready. Miguel Sapochnik’s just started shooting, so we’ve got sort of his massive sequences that…particularly in March. We’re so busy with massive things in March. It’ll be amazing.”(sic)
Deborah has been the art director of the fantasy epic since the fourth season.
She’s brought scenes set in the ruins of Valyria, the House of Black and White and the Dragonstone room to life, to name but a few.
Deborah was also recently awarded an accolade at the Art Director’s Guild Awards in the category of One-Hour Period or Fantasy Single-Camera Series for her work.
Fans of the drama were given a hint as to when the series could start after Arya Stark actress Maisie Williams revealed a possible air date.
Speaking to Metro, Maisie said: “We air our first episode in April [2019]. That’s a four-month turnaround for these huge episodes. There’s a lot that goes into the final edit.
“You would not want to rush this season at all. We owe it to our audience and our fans to really do this final season to the best of our abilities.”
HBO bosses revealed earlier this year that the show would be returning next year, but did not specify any particular month.
However, Maisie’s comments are yet to be confirmed, so fans will just have to wait and see.
Game of Thrones will return to Sky Atlantic in 2019.
So long, Kraken.
Hearthstone’s next expansion, Journey to Un’Goro, launches tomorrow (or maybe it’s already out by the time you read this, I don’t know — I’m not a mind-reader). While its 135 cards are exciting and all that, the release brings another huge change to digital card game leader. It marks the start of the new Standard cycle, the Year of the Mammoth.
This will make cards from the older Blackrock Mountain, The Grand Tournament, and League of Explorer sets ineligible in most of Hearthstone’s game modes. That’s a lot of card we have to say goodbye to. And while we’re happy to see some of the overly powerful and overplayed minions and spells go away, we’re going to deeply miss others.
Below, I’ve listed five soon-to-be non-Standard cards that I’m having a hard time seeing go. Not all of them were super powerful, but they were interesting additions that added a lot of fun to Hearthstone.
Above: Nefarian.
Poor Nefarian never saw a ton of play, but I always loved this card. Hearthstone’s fantastic presentation is a big part of its charm. In most card games, a minion enters the board with little fanfare. In Hearthstone, it’s a sensory extravaganza involving music, dialogue, and animations.
Sure, seeing the shadow of Nefarian swoop over the board was cool, but his lines were the best part of his entrance. Most cards say the same thing every time you play them. Some will have unique lines if you play them against specific heroes. But Nefarian had different dialogue for each of the game’s classes. It made him special.
The card isn’t bad, but few decks are going to include many (if any) minions that cost 9 or more mana. And if you’re going to have a 9 mana dragon in your deck, it’s probably going to be Ysera.
Above: Emperor Thaurissan.
Now, Emperor Thaurissan did see a lot of play. This awesome card had one of the most powerful effects in the game. Making your cards cheaper is great because it can help you play more each turn, but it also allows for combos that would otherwise be impossible. You could do things like play a Leeroy Jenkins with two Power Overwhlelmings, two Abusive Sergeants, and a Faceless Manipulator to deal 28 damage in one turn.
These days, Blizzard tries to discourage these combo decks that can deal a lot of damage in one turn, so we’re unlikely to see a card like Thaurissan again.
Above: Dreadsteed.
Dreadsteed was never super useful card, but it was always fun. Unless your opponent could Silence it, transform it, or send it back to your hand, Dreadsteed would keep re-summoning itself every time it died. You could get a surprising amount of value from a permanent 1/1 minion.
Nowadays, we have so many other sticky minions that give better stats or cheaper mana. Most Warlocks played Possessed Villager over Dreadsteed. Even though it would only ever get you one re-summon of a 1/1, the 1 mana cost made it much better. Maybe Dreadsteed would have been more practical if it was cheaper, but it was still a neat card.
Above: Elise Starseeker.
Elise helped to define a generation of control decks, giving players a way win the late stages of the game when they were running out of cards. The Map to the Golden Monkey was 2 mana spell that would draw you a card and shuffle the Golden Monkey into your deck. The Golden Monkey was a 6/6 minion with Taunt that would transform all other minions in your hand and deck into random Legendary ones.
Not only was the random factor fun (you’d almost always get something good, it was just a matter of how good), but this was a card design we had not seen before. The ultimate benefit of playing this card wouldn’t come into play until super late in games, encouraging players to create decks that could survive until the drew through most of their cards. In some ways, this was like a precursor to the Quest cards we’re getting in Journey to Un’Goro. It has a tough requirement, but the reward is worth it.
Above: Anyfin Can Happen.
Anythin is another Quest precursor. It sets your deck on a specific path, hoping that everything comes together for a big win at the end. For Anything to work, you really just needed to play two Bluegill Warriors and two Murloc Warleaders. Summoning those four again, thanks to the Charge effects of the Bluegills and the buffs from the Warleaders, lets you do a ton of damage.
It was a unique deck that stood out from more tempo-based and aggressive formats from things like Pirate Warrior and Jade Druid. Hopefully the Quest system will give us similar experiences.

Hearthstone news just in includes Blizzard’s big plans for 2017 and the Year of the Mammoth.
A new Standard format has been confirmed for the start of the Year of the Mammoth, which is set for when the first major expansion of 2017 launches.
When this has been released, older expansions such as Blackrock Mountain, The Grand Tournament, and League of Explorers cards will become exclusive to Wild.
Here’s the difference between Standard Play and Wild Play, as well as how these new changes will affect the Classic Deck, as explained by Blizzard:
“Standard allows players to use the most recently released cards, as well as a core of Basic and Classic cards. Our overall intention with Standard is to keep the game feeling fresh for all of our players, and to allow newer players to jump into Hearthstone quickly, without collecting lots of cards to build a competitive deck. Standard also gives our developers more freedom when designing new cards for the future.”
“However, over the course of the Year of the Kraken, certain cards in the Classic set have contradicted these goals. When cards show up too frequently in decks and are considered auto-includes, deck-building becomes more limited. Deck variety stagnates, potentially interesting build-around cards fall by the wayside, and the gameplay experience begins to feel less dynamic.
“Most cards should feel like situational additions to a deck, depending on the deck archetype the player is trying to build.
“To help meet our goals, certain cards from the Classic set will become exclusive to the Wild format. These cards will be added to the new Hall of Fame set, which will also include cards that are currently in the Reward set.”
Blizzard have also confirmed that they are changing their release format this year, deciding to focus on three-main expansion during the year.
The new release cycle will include a ~130 card expansion at the start of the year, a ~130 card expansion in the middle of the year, and another ~130 card expansion at the end of the year.
The development team has confirmed that cards will be acquired via packs like other expansions in the past; additionally, each release will include optional single-player missions that will help develop the expansions’ thematic narratives and offer challenges.
New clues have reportedly surfaced hinting at the release of the Overwatch Doomfist character.
According to the YouTube channel Arekkz, even more Doomfist clues have been discovered in the Overwatch PTR.
In the Numbani map, fans discovered 136 new models, as well as a 3D model in which the glass around Doomfist’s case is smashed.
This suggests that Doomfist is inbound, or at least that Blizzard is getting ready to build the hype for the next major Overwatch character.
And since this discover, it was discovered that an additional slot has been readied in the character select screen.
Furthermore, Doomfist’s music can now be heard playing on the menu screen.
Blizzard recently announced plans to make changes to a couple of fan-favourite characters.
Fans of Winston and Roadhog will be interested to hear that both characters have been rebalanced.
Winston’s huge head made him susceptible to critical hits, while Roadhog fans might be disappointed with the news that his hook is a bit less powerful.
Blizzard added the surprise changes to the latest Overwatch PTR update, which means Xbox One and PS4 players can expect the patch soon.
“The Roadhog changes overall reduce the power of his hook a bit, but his gun is now more effective when not using the hook,” Blizzard explained.
“Winston’s head hit volume was just abnormally big, making him take more damage than he otherwise should. This change brings it more in line with other heroes.”
