Maldives tourism bosses have cautioned holidaymakers in the tropical nation of the perils of drowning. A series of drownings have occurred across the island chain, claiming the lives of five tourists this month. Two of the five were a young couple on their honeymoon. Police are urging holidaymakers to take extra care when swimming, snorkelling or doing watersports following the fatal accidents in the past three weeks. This is a particularly perilous time of year as currents are strong during the north-eastern monsoon.

Police have appealed for children and adults who cannot swim to not go into the water, local site Maldives Independent reported.

Officials are also trying to improve safety measures at tourist establishments.

Resorts are being encouraged to keep a close eye on their guests to prevent future tragedies.

Tourists who stay at guesthouses on local islands are particularly at risk as they are more likely to be unaccompanied when they go swimming or snorkelling.

The tourism industry is now set to launch inspections and review regulations. Designated safe swimming areas may be also be decided with island councils.

“We have decided to inspect all tourist facilities in the Maldives within the next six to eight months,” tourism minister Ali Waheed told reporters. “Regular monitoring must be done to ensure that regulations are followed.”

The most recent death came on Sunday when a 40-year-old Russian tourist died during a diving trip.

Further fatalities included an 84-year-old man from the Czech Republic who was staying at the Paradise Resort and a 66-year-old South Korean tourist at the same resort.

Around 1.4 million visit the Maldives every year – and the tourism industry is one the country relies upon. In 2017, just 31 people drowned.

According to the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO): “Most visits to the Maldives are trouble-free.

“The most common problems faced by visiting British nationals are lost and stolen passports, and swimming and diving related accidents.”

The spate of drownings comes after a fire devastated luxury resort Gili Lankanfushi on one of the Maldives’ 26 atolls.

The blaze destroyed seven overwater villas and one restaurant, but no one was injured.

Last year a report warned that holiday islands such as the Maldives and Hawaii could be “uninhabitable in decades.” 

This is due to rising sea levels risk damaging them and ruining freshwater provisions, forcing locals to flee their homes by 2030.

New research by US Geological Survey (USGS) and the University of Hawaii has found that rising sea levels are already affecting the low-lying islands.

Powder-white beaches, incredible sea life and, best of all, peace and quiet, are things I could never tire of.

Also, being a destination primarily visited by honeymooners, privacy, standards and service (and therefore prices, too) are always high.

However, if you do worry about getting restless, moving around might be the answer.

My boyfriend and I stayed at two of Coco Collection’s resorts, which both have their own styles and we enjoyed different, equally incredible, experiences.

First up was Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu in the Baa Atoll, a 30-minute seaplane flight from capital city Malé’s international airport.

There’s no better first impression of the Maldives than flying over the seemingly-endless Indian Ocean, dotted with hundreds of tiny islands ringed with bright turquoise lagoons and reefs.

Here we upgraded to one of the 12 lagoon villas, perched on stilts over the clear, shallow water where you’ll regularly spot shoals of fish, rays and baby reef sharks.

Dhuni Kolhu is the epitome of barefoot luxury and, situated in a UNESCO biosphere reserve, it’s very much focused on sustainability.

I was delighted to discover a turtle rescue centre on the island – one of just three in the Maldives – where animals found with horrific injuries from fishing nets are brought for treatment and hopefully rehabilitation.

Guests can walk around the tanks, watch the turtles being fed and speak to the passionate vets who care for them.

Most resorts in the Maldives offer a plentiful programme of excursions to keep even the most fidgety holidaymakers occupied.

We did a dolphin spotting boat trip early one morning, a short visit to a local village on a neighbouring island and an afternoon snorkelling around some of the best coral reefs I’ve ever seen.

Food options have to be varied, too. In addition to the ever-changing Cowrie buffet restaurant, there’s also a Thai restaurant, beach bar and a barbecue twice a week.

As we prepared to leave the island and head to our next destination, it was hard to believe this could be topped.

Once back at Malé, we took a comfortable speedboat journey on to the nearby Coco Bodu Hithi resort.

Here we checked into an island villa, which was certainly no step down in our eyes – it was absolutely huge, with a circular bathtub big enough to do laps in, a private pool on one side and direct access to the beach on the other. Bodu Hithi is Dhuni Kolhu’s bigger, newer and shinier younger sister.

There are six restaurants to choose between, from Aqua’s seafood offerings to authentic Japanese cuisine at Tsuki, plus a heavenly spa set over the lagoon. We also tried some of their Uniquely Coco experiences, privately arranged for just you and your partner or family.

One evening we took a romantic sunset cruise around the island, while the next day we tried our hand at fishing in the traditional line-and-hook method, attempting to catch that night’s dinner (we weren’t particularly successful, but fortunately didn’t go hungry).

Another morning I had a personal underwater tour around the island’s house reefs with the resident marine biologist, and I swam right next to Hawksbill turtles. It was almost enough to make me pack in the day job and join her.

Part of the beauty of the Maldives is being able to do as much or as little as you like, but splitting up the trip is an excellent way to see more of this incredible country. And with more than one thousand islands, there are plenty more for me to explore.

The Maldives and Hawaii are just some of the most beautiful islands that many British holidaymakers flock to every year.

With golden sandy beaches and warm climate, it comes as no surprise that many flee the bad weather of the UK for a slice of paradise.

Yet in the next few years, this could no longer be an option as a new study has found.

New research by US Geological Survey (USGS) and the University of Hawaii has found that rising sea levels are already affecting the low-lying islands.

It isn’t just the infrastructure that could be affected but the water supply.

The increase in salt water on the islands means the fresh water will become contaminated.

This is because the rainwater that soaks into the ground leaves a layer of fresh water on top of the salt water, which is denser.

Yet rising sea levels will mean waves wash over the islands and over this water, making it undrinkable.

Report researcher Dr Curt Storlazzi explained how this will affect the islands.

He wrote: “The tipping point when potable groundwater on the majority of atoll islands will be unavailable is projected to be reached no later than the middle of the 21st century.”

Co-author Dr Stephen Gingerich reiterated: “The overwash events generally result in salty ocean water seeping into the ground and contaminating the freshwater aquifer.

“Rainfall later in the year is not enough to flush out the saltwater and refresh the island’s water supply before the next year’s storms arrive repeating the overwash events.”

It also means many of the locals will be forced to flee as it will no longer be a viable place to live.

This is expected to begin from 2030, with the 1,100 islands in the Pacific and the Indian Ocean including Seychelles, chosen by Prince William and Kate Middleton for their honeymoon, to be affected.

The Maldives was recently under a state of emergency after anti-government protests hit the capital city of Male.

It was lifted on 22 March which deemed the Maldives safe to travel to again.

This hasn’t affected tourism, with UK travellers increasing by 17.5 per cent last month compared to March 2017.

The total of 11,829 visitors exceeded the previous level of 10,063 British tourists.

With more than 23 new resorts to open on the islands, as well as the first undersea residence expected, it comes as no surprise that many are still enticed to the holiday destinations.

Maldives Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham has said parliament’s approval of a 30-day extension to the state of emergency is unconstitutional, Reuters reported two sources and local media as saying on Wednesday. The previous day, parliament approved the extension sought by President Abdulla Yameen, but it was passed without the constitutionally required quorum of 43 lawmakers. Bisham had informed the police in a letter that the state of emergency is unconstitutional, said two senior officials of the Prosecutor General’s office. “She did not ask the police to release the state of emergency arrestees, but she said that she could not see any legal basis for keeping them under arrest,” according to one official.
