Malcolm has previously spoken out on his personal health struggle and praised the Blackpool Victoria Hospital for their care.

Malcolm said: “Most of December I was in an induced coma, in the care of these brilliant, wonderful people at the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU).

“Fortunately I didn’t realise how bad it was; I was dying. The cardiac team, headed by Mr Joseph Zacharias, simply saved my life.

He continued to the Blackpool Gazette: “While there I collapsed and was brought here to Blackpool Victoria – where I was operated on, in a procedure which was described by my surgeon Mr Zacharias as groundbreaking.

“The heart attack tore a hole in my heart, they operated and took a chance.”

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.

Dr. Ian Malcolm Was Almost Cut Out of ‘Jurassic Park,’ Jeff Goldblum Reveals https://briefnews.eu/dr-ian-malcolm-was-almost-cut-out-of-jurassic-park-jeff-goldblum-reveals/ https://briefnews.eu/dr-ian-malcolm-was-almost-cut-out-of-jurassic-park-jeff-goldblum-reveals/#respond Tue, 03 Apr 2018 14:01:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dr-ian-malcolm-was-almost-cut-out-of-jurassic-park-jeff-goldblum-reveals/ jurassic park jeff goldblum

There would’ve been no Jurassic Park without Jeff Goldblum‘s Dr. Ian Malcolm. Well, not really, but it’s certainly hard to imagine. As soon as the chaos mathematician stepped into frame with his tinted glasses, leather jacket, and addictively weird laugh, we all knew it was an icon in the making. And then when he bared his chest after getting attacked by a dinosaur, he cemented his place on thousands of teen girls’ bedroom walls.

But, according to Goldblum, the character almost didn’t make it into the movie. There’s no dinosaur more horrifying than that prospect.

In a video interview with Vanity Fair, Goldblum revealed that Dr. Ian Malcolm was nearly cut from Jurassic Park.

When Goldblum’s met with Steven Spielberg, the director dropped the bomb that the character of Ian Malcolm might be merged with Sam Neill‘s Dr. Alan Grant. Here, Goldbum describes the meeting with all of glorious Goldblum-isms:

“I [read] that Michael Crichton book — Ian Malcolm, wow! Smart, funny, interesting character. [Spielberg] was so nice… but he said, ‘You know, there’s a sort of movement afoot… to have that part removed from the script. So since we’ve had this meeting, there’s this little wrinkle that may… render this moot.’ I kind of said, ‘Well, gee!’ I felt moved to advocate for my inclusion!”

Thankfully, Spielberg and the Jurassic Park team saw the light and kept Dr. Ian Malcolm in the movie. I mean, when you see Goldblum, how could you not?

Okay, you could argue that Ian Malcolm had little to do in the movie apart from stick his hips out and flirt with Laura Dern, but he was a very pivotal part of my childhood. And by childhood, I mean my sexual awakening. Besides, if he had been cut, we would have been robbed of the best Funko Pop of all time.

But let’s not dwell on horrifying coulda-beens, and focus on the future. Ian Malcolm will return in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, though sadly it looks like it will be no more than a glorified cameo. At least you’ll always have this delightful Vanity Fair interview, which is full of classic Goldblum quirks. Watch the whole thing to see Goldblum roll his “r’s” as he pronounces Independence Day director Roland Emmerich’s name.

  • Guitarist Malco.m Young, one of the founders of AC/DC, has died at age 64.
  • He had been suffering from dementia since 2014.
  • The band announced his death on its Facebook page Saturday.

NEW YORK (AP) — Malcolm Young, the rhythm guitarist and guiding force behind the Australian hard rock band AC/DC, has died. He was 64.

AC/DC announced the death on their official Facebook page and website Saturday. The posts did not say when or where Young died.

Young was diagnosed with dementia in 2014. A statement says he died peacefully with his family by his side.

Band representatives didn’t immediately return emails seeking comment. Young formed the group with his brother, Angus.

AC/DC were remarkably consistent for over 40 years with its mix of driving hard rock and bluesy shuffles, selling over 200 million albums, surviving the loss of its first singer and creating one of the greatest rock records ever in “Back in Black,” the world’s second best-selling album behind Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

Malcolm Roberts Is No Longer A Senator And People Can't Handle It https://briefnews.eu/malcolm-roberts-is-no-longer-a-senator-and-people-cant-handle-it/ https://briefnews.eu/malcolm-roberts-is-no-longer-a-senator-and-people-cant-handle-it/#respond Fri, 27 Oct 2017 06:36:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/malcolm-roberts-is-no-longer-a-senator-and-people-cant-handle-it/

Roberts quickly became one of the Senate’s most attention-grabbing characters – not least because of his ongoing conspiracy theories to do with climate change, NASA, CSIRO, the Bureau of Meteorology and the United Nations.

At first it was all about whether Roberts could be a citizen of India, where he was born. But as the scandal rolled on, it moved to a different theory: could Roberts have obtained British citizenship via his Welsh father?

BuzzFeed News uncovered online ancestry databases proving Roberts had once travelled on a UK passport, and, a week later, a copy of his official immigration file stating that Roberts was a British citizen – which he signed at age 19.

Roberts’ adviser told Fairfax Media he was “choosing to believe” he wasn’t British.

But his belief wasn’t enough. Roberts was referred to the High Court, and as the case played out, we discovered that Roberts had sent two emails trying to renounce his citizenship that went “literally into the ether”.

Roberts strenuously defended his citizenship online, in tweets that have, er, not aged well.

But alas – it was not the end of the story. Roberts was turfed from the Senate today after the High Court ruled on the Citizenship Seven.

The ruling found that Roberts did not cease to be a UK citizen until December 5 2016 – after he was elected to parliament.

“At the date of his nomination for the Senate Senator Roberts knew that there was at least a real and substantial prospect that prior to May 1974 he had been and that he remained thereafter a citizen of the United Kingdom,” the decision read.

So he was out, along with former deputy PM Barnaby Joyce, former Nationals senator Fiona Nash, and former Greens senators Larissa Waters and Scott Ludlam.

Jeff Goldblum Dishes on His Return as Ian Malcolm in ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ https://briefnews.eu/jeff-goldblum-dishes-on-his-return-as-ian-malcolm-in-jurassic-world-fallen-kingdom/ https://briefnews.eu/jeff-goldblum-dishes-on-his-return-as-ian-malcolm-in-jurassic-world-fallen-kingdom/#respond Tue, 24 Oct 2017 19:29:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jeff-goldblum-dishes-on-his-return-as-ian-malcolm-in-jurassic-world-fallen-kingdom/ jeff goldblum on jurassic world 2

If you ever ask Jeff Goldblum a question expecting a straight answer, well, you haven’t seen any of the Thor: Ragnarok marketing which revolves around the mile-a-minute talker giving dramatic readings of Twitter questions and getting hilariously sidetracked.

So when I say he gives more details about his return as the famously bare-chested mathematician Ian Malcolm in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, I mean details in the loosest way. Goldblum barely even confirms that the chaos mathematician is returning for the Jurassic World sequel, even though we know it to be true. So be prepared for the most Goldblum-y answer to questions about what Ian Malcolm has been up to, and whether he’s learned to button a shirt. Hit the jump to learn more about Jeff Goldblum on Jurassic World 2 and Ian Malcolm’s return.

Let’s play a game of: Is Jeff Goldblum being tight-lipped about reprising the role of Ian Malcolm, or is he just talking out of his ass? Either way, it leaves for a highly enjoyable interview with Radio Times, with which he shared his upcoming role in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom:

“Ian Malcolm, yes, might be back in this one, and he might have something to say about the current confluence of circumstances around the use and misuse of technology. With some wry irony, deep wise passionate conviction, and he might put on a nice dark bit of clothing here and there … and a tint of glass maybe.”

So Goldblum knows that the cult appeal of his character in Jurassic Park was his tinted sunglasses and the fact that he looked like he walked out of New York Fashion Week. (I know that’s why I loved him.) But there is a hint of an answer in there — that Malcolm will be back to warn the creators of Jurassic World about “the use of misuse of technology,” repeating his words of caution from 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park II. But it’s obvious that no one listened then, and probably no one will listen to them now.

But Malcolm probably hasn’t spent the last 20 years stewing over the fact that everyone heeded his wise words of advice. Goldblum jokes that perhaps art imitates life, and Malcolm became a jazz musician — aping Goldblum’s own side gig as a jazz pianist at the Rockwell club in L.A. every week. (Yes, really.) Goldblum says:

“What’s he been in the meantime? He opened a jazz club, probably, and he’s been playing every Wednesday in a place called Rockwell. He calls it Rockwell.”

While Goldblum won’t reveal what Malcolm has actually been doing in between franchises, I like to assume that Ian Malcolm saw La La Land once and has become an ardent jazz club owner. It would be nice if he finally found a vocation that finally matches his stylish wardrobe.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will be directed by J.A. Bayona, with Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and B. D. Wong set to reprise their roles from Jurassic World. Fallen Kingdom will open in theaters on June 22, 2018.

‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Deleted Scene Reveals What Happened to Jason Clarke’s Malcolm https://briefnews.eu/war-for-the-planet-of-the-apes-deleted-scene-reveals-what-happened-to-jason-clarkes-malcolm/ https://briefnews.eu/war-for-the-planet-of-the-apes-deleted-scene-reveals-what-happened-to-jason-clarkes-malcolm/#respond Tue, 24 Oct 2017 18:30:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/war-for-the-planet-of-the-apes-deleted-scene-reveals-what-happened-to-jason-clarkes-malcolm/ war for the planet of the apes deleted scene

The world in War for the Planet of the Apes looks dramatically different than the one we were presented in its predecessor, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, in which humans were just discovering that they would have to live warily alongside intelligent apes. But as tensions rose and sides were ultimately chosen in the war between humans and apes, there was hope for peace in the form of Jason Clarke‘s Malcolm and his family who befriended and were saved by Caesar.

However, Malcolm was not mentioned nor seen in War for the Planet of the Apes, in which the tensions between humans and apes hit its climax. But that wasn’t always the case, as seen in this deleted scene from the upcoming Blu-ray and digital release of the third film in the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise.

The fate of Malcolm, and presumably his family, is revealed in a deleted scene released ahead of the late October Blu-ray and digital release of War for the Planet of the Apes. They were killed at the hands of the Colonel (Woody Harrelson) after pleading for his army to make peace with Caesar and his tribe.

You can see the clip at Collider, but here is a brief rundown of the scene.

“He said that you were remarkable,” the Colonel quietly tells a caged Caesar (Andy Serkis in his mo-cap gear, not yet rendered to an ape physique). “More than just a man…and that you were a great leader. I thought he was crazy. He pleaded with me to find you and make peace with you.”

“What happened…to him?” Caesar somberly grunts.

“I shot him.”

It’s a tragic and bitter fate for Malcolm, who embodied one of the few sympathetic human characters throughout the Apes franchise who we left healthy and alive. To see another one of Caesar’s friends lose their lives — offscreen in such an indifferent way, at that — is just heartrending. Perhaps it was right to cut the scene. Caesar had suffered enough and we had seen enough evidence of the Colonel’s cruelty.

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

War For The Planet Of The Apes is now available on 4K, 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD.

Malcolm Gladwell says NFL protests are ‘profoundly respectful’ of the national anthem https://briefnews.eu/malcolm-gladwell-says-nfl-protests-are-profoundly-respectful-of-the-national-anthem/ https://briefnews.eu/malcolm-gladwell-says-nfl-protests-are-profoundly-respectful-of-the-national-anthem/#respond Tue, 26 Sep 2017 16:32:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/malcolm-gladwell-says-nfl-protests-are-profoundly-respectful-of-the-national-anthem/ malcolm gladwellBrad Barket/Getty Images

Bestselling author and journalist Malcolm Gladwell told Business Insider on Tuesday that NFL players’ decisions to kneel during the national anthem are inherently respectful of the United States.

The acts do not disrespect the American flag, as some critics, including President Donald Trump, have claimed, Gladwell said.

“The whole thing is baffling to me,” Gladwell, host of the podcast “Revisionist History,” said. “They’re being profoundly respectful as a reflection of their own feelings. They’re not chewing gum and gazing off into the sunset and texting.”

Roughly a year ago, quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem before games in protest of police brutality toward black Americans. The act has gained considerable momentum around the league in recent weeks, mostly in response to Trump’s statements on the protests.

“Ratings for NFL football are way down except before game starts, when people tune in to see whether or not our country will be disrespected!” Trump tweeted Tuesday morning.

Gladwell countered that kneeling in protest is a direct manifestation of the anthem’s message of freedom. The athletes are merely using it “for another purpose,” he said.

“We have these ritualized responses to these patriotic totems for different reasons,” he said. “All of us have a different emotional response when we listen to it. An immigrant has a different response when we listen to the national anthem than someone who grew up in Alabama and heard it at football games from the age of two.”

The important factor, Gladwell contended, is that the anthem was still the focus.

“As long as we place the anthem at the center of our ritualized response,” he said, “we’re respecting the anthem.”

‘War of the Planet of the Apes’ Cut a Reference to Jason Clarke’s Malcolm https://briefnews.eu/war-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-cut-a-reference-to-jason-clarkes-malcolm/ https://briefnews.eu/war-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-cut-a-reference-to-jason-clarkes-malcolm/#respond Sat, 15 Jul 2017 07:25:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/war-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-cut-a-reference-to-jason-clarkes-malcolm/ Jason Clarke war for the planet of the apes

Over the three new Planet of the Apes movies, the apes having continued to work their way to the center stage. While Rise of the Planet of the Apes had its humans mostly at the forefront with Caesar, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes made most of the humans more side characters, and War for the Planet of the Apes does the same. These humans have hardly ever gotten in the way of Caesar’s story, though. They support it and are integral to his journey, especially Dawn‘s Malcolm (Jason Clarke), a human who recognized a great mind and soul in Caesar.

Below, director Matt Reeves discusses the bleak reference to Malcolm that was cut from his sequel.

War for the Planet of the Apes takes place a few years after the events of Dawn. Unlike in Dawn, which featured a video of Will (James Franco) and confirmed his apparent death, there’s no reference to the humans Caesar previously crossed paths with, like Malcolm, Ellie (Keri Russell), and Alexander (Kodi Smit-McPhee).

Reeves told the Happy Sad Confused podcast about a scene cut from the script which revealed what happened to Malcolm:

Yeah, they were, actually, specifically Jason’s character was, and it was a disturbing discovery. The Colonel (Woody Harrelson) had revealed some information about a man who’d come to him when he first got to the city and impressed upon him how important it was to find Caesar and to tell him that he needed to create peace with this man. That this Ape was not just an Ape but was a great leader, and he thought this guy was crazy. And now he (Colonel), in the scene with Caesar, says that he now sees what he meant, and Caesar says, “Well, what happened to him?” And The Colonel said, “I killed him.” Caesar is perplexed and asks why, and The Colonel says, “His ideas were very dangerous because the ideas were like a virus and they could spread to others, and right now this is a fight for humanity.” So that’s what happened.

Malcolm’s fate sounds suitably bleak for the Planet of the Apes franchise. Happy endings are hardly a staple for this series. The sequence explaining Malcolm’s death wasn’t cut because it was too bleak, but because the exchange between Caesar and The Colonel didn’t feel organic and vital enough.

War for the Planet of the Apes is now in theaters.
