Here’s the iPhone 14 with front and back panels, and a middle frame. [credit:
iFixit
]
As has become an annual custom, iFixit has done a teardown of the iPhone 14, Apple’s baseline flagship iPhone for 2022. While the iPhone 14 seems almost identical to its immediate predecessor on the surface, iFixit found one vital difference Apple hasn’t announced publicly: it’s much easier to repair.
iFixit calls it “the most significant design change to the iPhone in a long time,” for their purposes, at least.
In the new design, the bulk of the phone is in a midframe, but the frame can be opened on either side—both the front and the back. Other recent models—including the still-sold iPhone 13, iPhone 12, and iPhone SE, as well as the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max—could only be opened from the front.

https://media.wired.com/photos/6324f829c9bb1af7ef2497d8/master/pass/New-Kindle-2022-Gear-Roundup.jpg
Veteran actor Donald Sutherland is starring in the film as Mr. Harrigan, but the bulk of the movie appears to take place from the point of view of Craig (Jaeden Martell). By all outward appearances, Craig is a normal boy who endures horrific torment and bullying at school. That’s one of the reasons why Craig turned to Harrigan for advice. And when Harrigan dies suddenly, Craig finds himself emotionally bereft without his guidance. That leads to some questionable choices.

If Mr. Harrigan really is rising from his grave to murder Craig’s tormentors, then it’s likely the kid’s fault. Who leaves a working phone with the body of a dead man? And it’s always a bad idea to pay for cell service in Hell. If the damned want to phone the living, then they should call collect!
Of course, there is also the possibility that Craig is simply losing his mind. But in King’s stories, it’s almost always supernatural in the end.
John Lee Hancock wrote and directed Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, which will premiere on Netflix on October 5.

A distant relative to Peter Jackson’s original trilogy, the streaming series is not afraid of diving head-first into the source material and exploring a rich fantasy world that spans millenniums. Furthermore, the show is able to take advantage of the mega-sized production budget through its groundbreaking visual effects, costumes, and set designs. Every fantastical element feels grounded in reality thanks to the commitment to detail by the artists behind the scenes. One aspect of the show, in particular, speaks to the care put into the vast history “The Rings of Power” covers in its eight-episode season.
The kingdom of Númenor is already a vital location in “The Rings of Power” for several reasons, but one small detail about their culture puts the dense nature of the series in an entirely new perspective. In the third episode, when Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elendil (Lloyd Owen) arrive at the Hall of Lore located on the Númenor island, scrolls — not bound books — are seen throughout the sequence. The scene does not exactly concern itself with that fact, but the background detail plays an important role in laying out the timeline. According to the production designer, this choice was not only intentional but started as an early idea during the development process.

For the uninitiated, the Hall of Lore was created by the elves and later kept intact by the previous king — Queen Miriel’s (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) father — Tar-Palantir. He admired the elves and their contributions to Númenor, ensuring the scrolls they left behind were safe from those who despised the race. However, if you look closely at the Hall of Lore, you can see bound books lying around, separate from the bevy of scrolls organized in the room. It implies that bookbinding was not a gift by the elves, and instead a creation by the humans who inhabit Númenor.
/Film’s Vanessa Armstrong interviewed production designer Ramsey Avery, who revealed just how intentional and detailed his work was from the start:
“One of the decisions that I sold the showrunners on early is that elves didn’t have bound books — they didn’t invent book binding. We know that Elrond has books in the Third Age, but that doesn’t mean that they had books in the Second Age. So, I wanted to tell the story that Númenorians invented book binding, and that this storage of older information, everything would have to be scrolls. I looked at a bunch of Tibetan storage, because of the scrolls, and I thought, ‘Wow, that’s really cool because now we can have this whole space that’s filled with scrolls.’“
The creative detail exemplifies how the kingdom of Númenor continued to advance despite its isolation from Middle-earth. Moreover, “The Rings of Power” confirms that despite the vast intelligence the elves have to offer, they still have not evolved very much in that regard.

In the second episode, Elrond (Robert Aramayo) visits Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) in his workplace to discuss plans to create a very powerful forge. The place is covered in loose scrolls, with not a single bound book in sight. The elves have books by the Third Age, as seen in the original trilogy, but they are still rolling up wrinkly pieces of paper in “The Rings of Power” (get dunked on by humans, elves).
The attention to continuity is impressive even by “The Lord of the Rings” standards, but the real showstopper is the intention to tell a story even in the minute details. Narrative drives every creative decision in the streaming series, and showing the difference between elves and humans in such a simple manner may be one of their brightest. As long as “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” continues to impress, I’d argue the series will stand the test of time as a passionate exploration of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work worthy of the title.

Germany will keep two nuclear power stations open and on standby in case of an energy crisis — marking a U-turn in its plan to phase out the fuel source by the end of 2022.
The two plants — located in the southwestern state of Baden Württemberg and the southeastern state of Bavaria — were to be shut by the end of this year but will now stay open until mid-April 2023.
German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said in a Monday statement that the country has a "very high supply security" for electricity, but noted that "this year is a special year across Europe."
"The Russian attack on Ukraine has created a tense situation in the energy markets and we are doing everything we can to avoid a gas shortage," Habeck added.
Germany is reliant on piped natural gas from Russia, which accounts for 35% of the country's imports of the fuel. However, it now faces a potential energy shortage in winter as Russia has shut down natural-gas flows via a critical pipeline that delivers natural gas to Germany and beyond.
"It remains very unlikely there will be crisis situations and extreme scenarios," Habeck said. "But as Minister responsible for security of supply, I do everything that is necessary to fully guarantee security of supply."
Habeck added that Germany is still committed to phasing out nuclear energy, and the two plants would be activated only when necessary.
The move to keep the nuclear plants open is a big deal as Germany has been phasing out nuclear energy since Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster in March 2011. It's a highly contentious issue in Germany, where the anti-nuclear movement dates back to the 1970s.
However, amid the country's unprecedented energy crisis, even its Green Party — born of the anti-nuclear movement — has softened its stance on switching off all of Germany's nuclear reactors this year. Habeck belongs to the Green Party.
"We have to prepare for the worst," Habeck told a news briefing, Reuters reported on Monday. "The plants will only reopen when more power is needed."

]]>It’s a bold game, one that’s significantly longer and larger to fit in all of its ideas. I respected Naughty Dog’s ambition when I played the sequel two years ago, but walked away feeling like it was as swollen as one of the series’ Bloaters. After revisiting both The Last of Us and its excellent Left Behind DLC in the new PS5 remake, I feel more sure of my original critique. The Last of Us works because it’s a lean and focused game. Part II, on the other hand, makes it clear that excess is Naughty Dog’s Achilles’ heel.
What I immediately noticed in my replay of The Last of Us is that there’s barely a wasted moment. From its tense opening sequence to its gripping final hour, most scenes play a crucial role in the story. For instance, the winter-set chapter where Ellie takes charge serves as an important way to show how Joel’s ruthlessness has begun to infect her. My mind wandered once or twice during my 12-hour playthrough.
That’s even truer of Left Behind, a tight DLC that tells one of Naughty Dog’s most succinct stories in two hours. Every single moment is memorable, as it naturally develops the relationship between Ellie and Riley with each scene. I walked away from my replay wondering if it’s the single best pound-for-pound game the studio has made to date.

I don’t quite feel the same way about Part II. Clocking in at around 24 hours, the sequel is twice as long as its predecessor. Part of that is a necessity, as it’s telling the story of two different characters whose journeys run parallel to one another. However, I don’t always get the sense that every scene is indispensable as Naughty Dog tends to repeat itself much more. Several beats in Abbey’s story tend to retread already established ideas about the moral gray zones of violent conflict. We continually see “bad guys” reframed as “good guys,” something that’s already effectively established by the two-protagonist structure of the game.
That repetition is more noticeable in the actual game design. Naughty Dog tends to reuse the same tropes and scene setups to create artificial conflict. Several moments of the game involve a character walking toward a location, only to have the ground collapse under them and send them on some roundabout shortcut into a combat zone. There are less crutches like that in Part I, as complications aren’t as mechanically induced. That might make the game feel less like a high-stakes Hollywood blockbuster, but that’s ultimately to its benefit.

This observation isn’t only exclusive to The Last of Us series. You can see the same dynamic in Naughty Dog’s Uncharted franchise over the years too. The developer is at its best the less it’s focused on escalating drama. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a tight action game that smoothly ups the ante with each scene, while Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is a hodgepodge of disconnected set-pieces that only seem to exist to create the illusion that Nathan Drake’s adventure is more exciting than the last. I noticed a similar thread in January when I played through Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves’ Collection and found that Uncharted: The Lost Legacy held up better than the excellent, but often meandering Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
I have the exact same feeling walking out of The Last of Us Part I, even if Part II is technically a more impressive spectacle. While I could nitpick about the former’s now dated level design, I found that it doesn’t leave as much room for dead air. With less time spent looking for “another way around,” the focus is more squarely on building Joel and Ellie’s distorted relationship one scene at a time. That allows the game to naturally build to a violent crescendo, whereas Part II hits long stretches where it feels like the band is tuning up between movements.
I hope that The Last of Us Part I was as much of a self-reflective learning process for Naughty Dog as it was for me. I’d love to see the developer scale back its loftier Hollywood ambitions to create something as lean as The Last of Us (I still wish Part II’s final California-set chapter had been reserved for a separate Left Behind-sized DLC). Save some of those excess scenes for a director’s cut down the line — lord knows the studio needs better excuses to rerelease its games anyways.
The Last of Us Part I is available now on PS5.

Eamonn Holmes, 61, and his wife Ruth Langsford, 61, were on hand to host Wednesday’s edition of the programme and the former teased he had an announcement to make at the start of the show. Midway through This Morning, the presenter told viewers of the ITV show he was going to become a grandad as his eldest son Declan is expecting a child with his wife, Jennie. The presenter and his wife were visibly emotional over the news as they fought back the tears.
At the beginning of the announcement, Eamonn said: “I’ve been having a very tough week. Tell everyone how tough my week has been.”
Ruth replied: “It’s been very, very tough. No, it has and you’ve told people a lot but I do know he is in a lot of pain.”
Taking over, the former Sky News broadcaster added: “I don’t like complaining about anything,” before explaining he’d had a lot of support from viewers over his recent back problems.
“It hasn’t been a good time and I’ve been in tears and I’ve been in tears again because it involves these two people here.”
An image of Declan and Jennie was shown on screen as Eamonn’s children don’t tend to make appearances on his shows.

“The clue is their surname is Holmes. Declan is my eldest boy, he’s 32 years of age and there is Jennie his beloved wife,” the presenter explained.
“And they have just announced that I’m going to be a grandparent which means I am a [grandad],” he continued as Ruth applauded him.
Declan is Eamonn’s eldest child from his first marriage to Gabrielle Holmes, which ended in 1995 following the birth of two other children; Rebecca and Niall.
Along with his wife Ruth, the broadcaster also has another son called Jack but Declan is the first to give the television veteran a grandchild.
Taking to Twitter, viewers reacted to the news as one wrote: “@EamonnHolmes so glad you’re going to be a granddad. You had me worried for the last hour. Also Granny @RuthieeL. Congratulations to the parents of the new arrival due in July.
Another posted: “Thought Eamonn Holmes was gonna retire or something…he’s gonna be a grandad? Great news but very badly worded… #ThisMorning.”
A third remarked: “@EamonnHolmes @thismorning Geez Eamonn, you news sounded like there was something seriously wrong with you. Can you be less dramatic and sound more cheerful.”
“Not very impressed with Eamonn Holmes leading everyone on to think he’s poorly or something only to then announce he’s going to be a Grandad? Badly worded lead up #ThisMorning,” a fourth shared.

It was only last year, Eamonn and Ruth spoke out about the idea of becoming grandparents in the not-so-distant future.
Discussing the prospect on the show last year in light of school closures because of the pandemic, the former said: “The next time we are in a school will be when we are grandparents.”
Ruth added: “We will be grandparents! I will look forward to it. You don’t have all the responsibility, do you?
“You just have all the nice stuff, like prize-giving, the nativity play, you don’t have to do early morning school runs.”
“We look forward to those days again,” Eamonn said but back in 2018, he added more speculation to the rumour mill he was going to be a grandad.
The presenter said: “If it’s God’s will and there are grandchildren then I would be the most fun granddaddy on the block!”
“He doesn’t like the thought of being a grandpa because it makes him feel old,” Ruth explained in an interview with HELLO!
“But I can guarantee you the minute a baby is put in his arms and is his son’s child, he will be mush. I can’t wait! I think it will be lovely,” she added.
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
