It was almost weekly that teams were announcing their new lineups — keeping track of it all was challenging.

But not that the curling season has hit the halfway point the adjustment period is over, and teams are gearing up for the Scotties and Brier push. 

"You can only say we're a new team for so long," Kevin Koe said. "We can't keep saying that forever. It's time to get to where we think we can be."

Koe's former team represented Canada at the Olympics just one year ago. His third Marc Kennedy announced a leave from curling at the conclusion of last year and Brent Laing left to join John Epping. Koe and Ben Hebert had to find two new players in a hurry. B.J. Neufeld has taken the role of third and Colton Flasch is playing second.

"We had a great first half," Koe said. "I'm really happy with where we're at and I feel we have a lot of room to improve. It's time to crank it up a bit."

It's not uncommon for teams to disassemble and reload for the four-year Olympic cycle. That's the new reality. Koe was at the forefront of this practice when he did it last cycle as well.

"You have to make some tough decisions sometimes," Koe said. "They're not easy but you hope they work out in the end."

As competitive as Koe's new team has been so far this year, he knows they're still a ways off from where the skip wants them to be.

"We're still learning," he said. "The communication in some of the games still needs work to get more out of the rocks we're throwing. Tiny little things make the biggest difference against the top teams."

All-skip success

One of the biggest shakeups in the off-season consisted of four skips leaving their teams and forming a new super-skip team led by Kerri Einarson.

There we so many questions and comments about how this team was going to come together — too many skips on one team?

Einarson, Val Sweeting, Shannon Birchard and Briane Meilleur, who all skipped their own teams in 2017-18, answered their critics in a big way, winning four World Curling Tour events to open this season.

"We've really clicked from the start and the girls have really embraced their roles in their new positions," Einarson said. "It all comes down to chemistry. You have to be able to get along on and off the ice."

Einarson says the team got together a number of times throughout the off-season to get to know each other better and talk about goals for the future. They've committed to this four-year cycle and seem to be gaining confidence at each event.

"Chemistry is a big part of the game and building those relationships with your players and building trust," Einarson said.

Einarson says the team voted on her the skip and throwing last rocks. She says their confidence in her has made all the difference halfway through the year.

"They chose me to skip so they have a lot of trust in me calling the game and throwing the last rock. The girls have been so supportive."

Carruthers still working out the kinks

Then there's Team Carruthers, which joined forces with Mike McEwen to form a powerhouse Manitoba squad during the off-season.

But this year has been frustrating at times as Reid Carruthers and McEwen continue to learn how each other call the game.

"Off the ice, it's exactly what I thought it would be," Carruthers said. "On the ice we haven't had the success I'd hope for. It's not for lack of chemistry."

Throughout a number of events this season they've been tinkering with the lineup. In some cases Carruthers has called the game and thrown third, with McEwen throwing last rocks. This week in North Battleford, Sask., Carruthers is calling the game and throwing last rocks.

"This is our last trial event in a lot of ways before provincials," Carruthers said. "We have a couple of events after this and I think we'll lock in our positions during those."

Carruthers says there have been flashes of great curling during the season but that they've been plagued with inconsistencies, something he says they need to figure out quickly.

"The toughest thing is learning what not to say," he said. "Figuring out what to say is maybe a little easier but knowing when to bite your tongue is tough."

First up, YouTube user Malec created this absolutely unbelievably anime opening credits sequence for Rick and Morty, but reimagines the series as an anime. This is so impressive that it doesn’t even feel like a fanmade production. Even the theme is perfectly executive and it makes me wish that I could understand the lyrics.

Drew Barrymore runs through the timeline of her career (via Vanity Fair), from early days as a child star in movies like E.T. The Extra Terrestrial and Firestarter to prime romantic comedy years in The Wedding Singer and Never Been Kissed. She also touches upon hits like Charlie’s Angels and more recent work like her own make-up line.

Finally, following in the footsteps of hearing all the times Owen Wilson has said “wow” during his career, now you can see all the times Keanu Reeves has said “whoa” in the movies, starting in 1986 and running all the way through 2016.

Nothing says Halloween like a sexified retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. The Vampire Diaries creator Kevin Williamson brings his signature brand of sexy fantasy shows populated by models playing teenagers to CBS All Access with Tell Me a Story.

Starring Billy Magnussion, Kim Cattrall, and The Vampire Diaries alum Paul Wesley, Tell Me a Story is a modern reimagining of three classic fairy tales, The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and Hansel and Gretel as a “dark and twisted psychological thriller.”

We all know the only thing that fairy tales are missing is an edgy, sexy, modern makeover courtesy of Williamson, the screenwriter of the Scream movies, and more recently creator of The Vampire Diaries, The Following, Dawson’s Creek. It’s not like Hollywood has attempted gritty reboots of classic fairy tales starring the latest YA star, or like a massively popular ABC series that brought fairy tales to the modern world just went off the air. Fairy tales are universal stories that could be reimagined in any which way, but it seems like Tell Me A Story falls back on the tired trope of delivering “fairy tales, but sexy!”

Based on the Spanish fantasy series, Cuéntame un cuento, Tell Me A Story interweaves the three fairy tales of Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and Hansel and Gretel into a serialized drama that will premiere exclusively on CBS’ streaming service. I’m not sure why talented stars like Billy Magnussen or Kim Cattrall are hanging out here, but it seems like Tell Me A Story will give them plenty of opportunities to glower sexily. Apart from Magnussen and Cattrall, Tell Me A Story features several alumni of Williamson’s hit shows, including The Vampire Diaries‘ Paul Wesley and The Originals’ Danielle Campbell.

The Tell Me A Story cast is rounded out by James Wolk, Dania Ramirez, Sam Jaeger, Davi Santos, Zabryna Guevara, and Dorian Missick.

Get a sneak peek at the new CBS All Access Original Series, Tell Me A Story, which takes the world’s most beloved fairy tales and reimagines them as a dark and twisted psychological thriller. Set in modern-day New York City, the first season of this serialized drama interweaves “The Three Little Pigs,” “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Hansel and Gretel” into an epic and subversive tale of love, loss, greed, revenge and murder.

Did you think Airbus’ Pop.Up flying taxi concept was a little drab? So did Audi. It teamed up with Airbus and Italdesign to unveil Pop.Up Next, a reworked version of the two-seat autonomous vehicle concept. The new version is more stylish than the mostly functional original, and borrows more than a few cues from Audi’s current design language. However, it should also be more practical — it’s supposed to be “significantly” lighter than the original, which is rather important for a hybrid passenger drone.

The core concept remains the same. Pop.Up Next revolves around a passenger pod that attaches to a skateboard-like platform that drives around town, but hooks up to a drone for times when flying would be more convenient. As a passenger, you’d stare at a 49-inch touchscreen that uses face recognition, eye tracking and voice recognition for interaction.

It’s still not certain if or when the concept will see production. There are any number of hurdles beyond the technology itself, such as legal frameworks, infrastructure (you’d want safe places for the ground-to-air transition) and, of course, business models. Right now, Pop.Up Next is more about showing what transportation could look like in a fully autonomous future.

Over the years, people have become obsessed with gathering beneath the famous L-O-V-E sculpture that towers over tourists’ and locals’ heads in Philadelphia. Some see the six-foot-tall statue as an iconic symbol of the city. It’s been the backdrop for countless politicians’ photo ops, played host to skateboarding rebels cruising by, and today the place is a selfie-snappers destination, too.

On Tuesday, the famous L-O-V-E sculpture was paraded around town before finally being re-installed in the ‘Love Park,’ more officially known as John F. Kennedy Plaza.

The statue spent about a year away from its nesting grounds, sitting at nearby city hall as the park was renovated.

But this week, after a reported $ 67,000 makeover, according to CBS, it’s back and restored to a more original hue, perched atop a brand new rectangular pedestal. Take a look at how the iconic piece of art has changed shades since it first arrived in Philly in 1976, and how the symbol, and its visitors, have evolved over more than 40 years together.

The statue, first brought to the park for the American Bicentennial in 1976, has gone through a few different looks during its time in the park.
