Grantchester season four is back on ITV and fans have been thoroughly enjoying the new series.

Last week saw Grantchester residents finally say goodbye to their beloved vicar Sidney Chambers (James Norton).

He left the show last week, and it was a sad moment with fans were begging for him to return.

However, this week saw fans delighted by the fact that Leonard (Al Wearer) was given a bigger role in the parish.

He was made the interim vicar of Grantchester and started to help Detective Geordie Keating (Robson Green) in his investigation.

Fans seemed to enjoy this new pairing, and they took to Twitter to comment on it.

One viewer wrote: “Whoever wrote this episode of Grantchester has excelled themselves #grantchester absolutely hilarious in all the right places Al Weaver is so talented.”

Another said: “Why don’t they just stick with Geordie and Leonard? They make a good team #grantchester.”

“I love how Mrs. C is with Leonard. ‘Have another sausage if you’re fighting crimes’,” wrote another viewer.

A third said: “Leonard is actually rather good at this detecting lark. Surprisingly good. I do hope he won’t be pushed aside again. He deserves his moment in the limelight.”

“I’m going to miss Sidney. 🙁 #Grantchester,” another sobbed.

A third begged: “He can’t go yet, not yet… #Grantchester.”

While a fourth pleaded: “Nooo Sidney Please don’t go @jginorton #Grantchester.”

“Tonight’s #Grantchester is the last one with Sidney. At least there’s a nice handsome young vicar to replace him!” a fifth said, in an attempt to see the silver lining.

Grantchester continues Fridays at 9pm on ITV.

  • In a recent episode of HBO’s new four-part series with political website Axios, Trump broke into a monologue professing his love for the Sharpie pen and disdain for the traditional government ordered pen.
  • Trump said Sharpie created a personalized black plastic pen for him that has his own signature on it.

Trump is known for his signature writing tool – the Sharpie pen.

In fact, his thick and highly legible Sharpie scrawl has caused problems for the president in the past – giving away notes to his speech and making some of his private thoughts visible to the public.

Despite this, he has continued to use the Sharpie to sign executive orders, mark up drafts of important speeches, and add notes like “a teacher marking a quiz,” Guardian writer Sam Wolfson wrote in July.

What is lesser known, however, is that Trump struck up a deal with Sharpie to have these pens personalized for himself.

Toward the end of the first episode of HBO’s new four-part series done with political website Axios, Trump broke into a monologue professing his love for the Sharpie pen and disdain for the government-ordered pen that is traditionally used by US Presidents. Meanwhile, Axios reporter Jonathan Swan and its CEO, Jim VandeHei, patiently listened on the sidelines.

“I was signing documents with a very expensive pen and it didn’t write well,” Trump said. “It was a horrible pen, and it was extremely expensive,” he added, referring to the so-called government-ordered pen.

“And then I started using just a Sharpie, and I said to myself, well wait a minute, this much writes much better and this cost almost nothing.” At this point in the monologue, Trump pulled out a standard grey Sharpie pen from his draw.

“So, I called up the folks at Sharpie and I said, ‘do me a favor, can you make the pen in black? Can you make it look rich?'” he said.

According to Trump, Sharpie’s response was not only that they could they do that, but they also offered to put his signature on it. Trump proudly flashed the gold labeled pen to the camera.

Sharpie’s parent company Newell Brands did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.

‘Make peace great again!’ Crowds take to Brussels streets to protest NATO, Trump (VIDEO, PHOTO) https://briefnews.eu/make-peace-great-again-crowds-take-to-brussels-streets-to-protest-nato-trump-video-photo/ https://briefnews.eu/make-peace-great-again-crowds-take-to-brussels-streets-to-protest-nato-trump-video-photo/#respond Sun, 08 Jul 2018 07:42:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/make-peace-great-again-crowds-take-to-brussels-streets-to-protest-nato-trump-video-photo/ Hundreds of anti-war activists swarmed the streets of Belgium’s capital, decrying NATO ahead of the organization’s upcoming summit. Chanting protesters took aim personally at the US president, toting “Trump not welcome” signs.

The rally on Saturday saw demonstrators marching towards the NATO headquarters, where the leaders of the 28-member alliance are set to meet on 11-12 July for an annual summit. The activists, representing an array of organizations that united under the motto ‘Make peace great again,’ chanted and carried banners reading “Stop NATO – stop war,” “Trump not welcome” and “NATO GAME OVER” as they peacefully paraded in the streets.

Although rally was held in the center of Europe, activists took the opportunity to lambast Trump’s domestic policies, with a group of protesters led by the Amnesty International marching under an “End Family Detention” banner in reference to the controversial policy of separating migrant children from adults at the border, which was recently revoked.
Some carried Palestine and Cuba flags, protesting against Israeli violence in the West Bank and the US blockade of the Caribbean island.

The colorful procession also featured activists wearing masks, mocking US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko.

The protest on Saturday preceded the anti-NATO conference on Sunday, which will see dozens of activists and organizations from all over the word coming to Brussels, Iraklis Tsavdaridis, executive secretary of the World Peace Council (WPC), a self-described “anti-imperialist” international organization promoting diversity and universal disarmament, told RT.

The ultimate goal of all the anti-NATO activities planned for the weekend is to emphasize that “NATO was never a peace-defending organization,” he said, adding that the threat the bloc poses to global peace and security has only increased over time due to its rampant military build-up – first and foremost on Russia’s doorstep.

“It has been always an aggressive, offensive, criminal, war-mongering organization, especially these days when NATO is unfolding its new plans to deploy troops on the Baltic sea up to Bulgaria along the borders with the Russian Federation, to deploy an anti-missile shield in Romania and Poland, to increase its pressure in the Middle East,” Tsavdaridis said.

Peace-loving people must stand up to NATO, he stated, calling on peace movements and activists to seek the dissolution of the Cold War relic, which entails the “struggle for each member-state’s disengagement and withdrawal” from the alliance.

Speaking in the run-up to Saturday’s rally, Tsavdaridis argued that the people’s anger should not be directed at Trump or any other personalization of power, but rather at the policies championed by NATO member states for years that spark and foment wars.

“For us, it is not a matter of a person, of demonization of one person, it’s the rejection of the policies of NATO states’ governments, which are unanimously ratifying and deciding the anti-people plans, the anti-peace plans,” he said.

It was expected that up to 15,000 people would join the rally, although the actual turnout seemed to be lower, judging by photos and videos posted on social media.

As part of Microsoft’s $ 7.5 billion purchase of cloud source code repository GitHub, the company is installing a new CEO. Once the deal closes (which is expected to happen later this year), out will go GitHub co-founder Chris Wanstrath and in will come Nat Friedman. Friedman is the former CEO of Xamarin, the cross-platform .NET implementation that Microsoft bought in 2016.

Friedman brings solid open-source bona fides: core parts of the Xamarin stack were open source, and Friedman’s previous company, Ximian, was created to develop the open-source GNOME project. His appointment should quell many of the fears that open-source developers have about the takeover. To engage with the community further, Friedman today did a Reddit AMA to answer questions about the acquisition.

The main thrust of his replies? Microsoft doesn’t really intend to change much at GitHub. When asked if GitHub users should expect any big alterations, Friedman answered that Microsoft is “buying GitHub because [it] likes GitHub” and intends to “make GitHub better at being GitHub.” Although there will be “full integration” between GitHub and Visual Studio Team Services, there won’t be any radical changes in trajectory or service offerings.

‘Make millions and come back’: Revolving door alive & well in Trump’s Washington https://briefnews.eu/make-millions-and-come-back-revolving-door-alive-well-in-trumps-washington/ https://briefnews.eu/make-millions-and-come-back-revolving-door-alive-well-in-trumps-washington/#respond Thu, 08 Mar 2018 22:40:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/make-millions-and-come-back-revolving-door-alive-well-in-trumps-washington/

President Donald Trump’s promise to “drain the swamp” in Washington may be getting mired in the same muck his predecessors struggled with, as lobbyists keep getting government jobs and officials leave to make fortunes elsewhere.

Trump’s chief economic adviser Gary Cohn resigned on Wednesday, after disagreeing with the president on the issue of steel and aluminum tariffs. At a Thursday cabinet meeting, Trump chided Cohn for being a “globalist” but wished the former Goldman Sachs executive well in his future endeavors.

“He’s gonna go out and make another couple hundred million, then he’s going to maybe come back” in some other capacity, Trump said.

If Cohn decides to parlay his year-long White House stint into lobbying, he might come up against Trump’s executive order prohibiting former administration officials from lobbying for five years after leaving office, and lobbying for foreign entities in general.

Per Executive Order 13770, issued on January 28, 2017, former lobbyists cannot work for the government on matters they lobbied or otherwise worked on unless at least two years have passed. Administration officials are barred from lobbying for five years after leaving office, and can never work as agents of a foreign government.

In the first year of the Trump administration, the White House counsel has issued at least 24 ethics waivers to executive branch officials, AP reported on Thursday. In comparison, the Obama administration issued almost 70 waivers over the eight years.

At least 187 lobbyists have been hired by the Trump administration, according to a report released Wednesday by the Democrat-friendly government watchdog ProPublica. In his first year, Trump hired 18 recent lobbyists, while Obama had hired 14, ProPublica noted.

The second term of George W. Bush’s presidency was marked by the scandal involving lobbyist Jack Abramoff and several of his partners, who overbilled their Native American clients and even secretly lobbied against them to drive up profits.

The scandal led Bush to sign a 2007 law banning banned members of the House from lobbying Congress for one year after leaving office, and imposing a two-year moratorium on senior executive branch officials and members of the Senate. The law was proposed by Democrats, but received enough Republican support to be veto-proof. Barack Obama, then a US senator, called it “the most sweeping ethics reform since Watergate.”

Obama also came to Washington with a promise to rein in lobbyists.

“When I’m president of the United States, if you want to work for my administration, you can’t leave my administration and then go lobby,” he said while campaigning in Iowa in August 2007.

In practice, the executive order he signed in 2009 applied only to registered lobbyists, meaning people who spend 20 percent or more of their time at work directly lobbying. It also only covered political appointees, leaving career bureaucrats free to seek their fortunes in the private sector.

The loopholes were big enough for officials such as intellectual property czar Victoria Espinel and Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services head Marilyn Tavenner to slip right through, Politico noted in 2015.

The fact-checking outfit PolitiFact described Obama’s pledge as a “broken promise.”

Democrat slams Pelosi’s ‘make America white again’ comment https://briefnews.eu/democrat-slams-pelosis-make-america-white-again-comment/ https://briefnews.eu/democrat-slams-pelosis-make-america-white-again-comment/#respond Mon, 29 Jan 2018 20:31:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/democrat-slams-pelosis-make-america-white-again-comment/

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi drew sharp criticism from Senator Joe Manchin, a fellow Democrat, who said her accusing President Donald Trump of racism was not helpful to the immigration debate.

“We don’t need that type of rhetoric on either side, from Nancy, [Speaker of the House] Paul Ryan or anybody else,” Manchin said on CNN’s State of the Union show on Sunday.

Manchin (D-West Virginia) is a moderate Democrat and a leader of a bipartisan Senate group working on immigration. In a separate interview on Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press, he said he thought the White House plan was “a good starting point.”

Trump is insisting on $ 25 billion in funding for a border wall with Mexico and tougher immigration enforcement. His proposals call for a crackdown on chain migration and the diversity visa lottery program.

In a speech at the United States Conference of Mayors 2018 winter meeting on Friday, Pelosi said the 50 percent cut to legal immigration and the “recent announcements to end Temporary Protected Status for Central Americans and Haitians are both part of the same cruel agenda. They are part of the Trump administration’s unmistakable campaign to make America white again.”

President Donald Trump’s latest immigration plan offers a path to citizenship for up to 1.8 million people who were brought into the US illegally as minors. Last September, the Trump administration rescinded the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program established by former President Barack Obama in 2012, which gave temporary protection from deportation to people who qualified.

Many Twitter users joined Manchin in criticizing Pelosi’s remarks.

‘Make America Gay Again’: Mike Pence gets trolled with rainbow flag https://briefnews.eu/make-america-gay-again-mike-pence-gets-trolled-with-rainbow-flag/ https://briefnews.eu/make-america-gay-again-mike-pence-gets-trolled-with-rainbow-flag/#respond Sat, 30 Dec 2017 23:19:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/make-america-gay-again-mike-pence-gets-trolled-with-rainbow-flag/

Vice-president Mike Pence was greeted with a ‘Make America Gay Again’ rainbow banner by his temporary neighbors during a stay at his vacation home in Aspen, Colorado.

The flag was hung on a stone pillar that stands at the end of the driveway to both homes, Pitkin County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Buglione told the Aspen Times.

While the family were first “sheepish” about how their actions would be viewed by the Secret Service and law enforcement, according to Pitkin County Sheriff Joe DiSalvo, they were quickly reassured that their “free speech rights” would not be controlled.

The Secret Service agents were not bothered by the statement, according to Buglione, and were offered “chili and corn muffins” by the couple.

The banners were hung by their daughters, and their action had the full support of their parents, Shannon Slade, a girlfriend of one of the daughters, who was also involved in the action, told the Aspen Times.

The Pence family arrived in the area Tuesday by motorcade from Eagle County Airport and is expected to leave Aspen Monday.

This is not the first time the conservative Republican, who has made several controversial comments on the LGBTQ community, has been targeted by activists.

Ahead of his inauguration earlier this year, LGBT activists marched in protest to his home in Washington, DC, condemning his positions on marriage equality and religious freedom.

Pence is opposed to same-sex marriage, and in 2015, as Indiana governor, he signed a “religious freedom” bill allowing businesses and individuals to refuse services and discriminate against LGBT people. The bill was later changed, after intense pressure, to include anti-discrimination language.

New US sanctions on Moscow would ‘make Cold War look like child’s play’ – top Russian banker https://briefnews.eu/new-us-sanctions-on-moscow-would-make-cold-war-look-like-childs-play-top-russian-banker/ https://briefnews.eu/new-us-sanctions-on-moscow-would-make-cold-war-look-like-childs-play-top-russian-banker/#respond Sun, 24 Dec 2017 22:06:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-us-sanctions-on-moscow-would-make-cold-war-look-like-childs-play-top-russian-banker/

A further tightening of anti-Russia sanctions, reportedly being considered by Washington, would have such a devastating effect that the Cold War rivalry would pale in comparison, Sberbank CEO Herman Gref has warned.

New, potentially far-reaching US sanctions against Moscow would “make the Cold War look like child’s play,” the CEO of Russia’s largest commercial bank told the Financial Times. He called such measures “irrational.”

The banker referred to the potential exclusion of Russian banks and corporations from the SWIFT payment system – the global network of secure financial messaging services. Such a move has allegedly been considered by western politicians ever since the US and the EU initially imposed sanctions against Russia in 2014.

It’s now been reported the US Treasure Department is preparing a new document on what’s termed “parastatal entities” close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, which include state entities as well as enterprises owned by Russian oligarchs. The US Treasury is expected to present its report to US Congress as early as February 2018, the Financial Times reports.

Early in August, the US passed legislation imposing new economic sanctions against three nations, including Russia, which virtually made it impossible for President Donald Trump to lift any restrictions introduced against Moscow without congressional approval.

The law also targeted Russian banks and energy companies. Under the current restrictions, Russian banks cannot raise debt on Western markets with a maturity of more than 14 days.

The act specifically states that the US will “continue to oppose the Nord Stream 2 pipeline given its detrimental impacts on the European Union’s energy security, gas market development in Central and Eastern Europe, and energy reforms in Ukraine.” The move, however, alarmed US allies in Europe, which even considered reciprocal measures in case the new sanctions would harm European companies working in partnership with Russian-EU energy projects.

Moscow and Washington are also engaged in a bitter row over Russian diplomatic property seized by the US in late 2016 following claims that Russia had a hand in the US presidential election. It began with the expulsion of 35 Russian embassy staff by outgoing US president, Barack Obama, in late December, 2016. Obama further ordered the closure of two Russian countryside vacation retreats in Maryland and New York. The US failed to return Russia’s property and imposed new sanctions instead. Moscow cut the number of US diplomatic personnel in Russia to 455 in August.

Washington responded with more hostile action in September, telling Russia to shut its consulate-general in San Francisco and trade missions in Washington and New York. US security services also searched both diplomatic compounds. Moscow said this was in “violation” of international law, and that the properties were simply “occupied.”

Trump replaces ‘E Pluribus Unum’ with ‘Make America Great Again’ on presidential coin https://briefnews.eu/trump-replaces-e-pluribus-unum-with-make-america-great-again-on-presidential-coin/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-replaces-e-pluribus-unum-with-make-america-great-again-on-presidential-coin/#respond Sun, 24 Dec 2017 02:17:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-replaces-e-pluribus-unum-with-make-america-great-again-on-presidential-coin/ Donald TrumpChip Somodevilla/Getty Images

  • President Donald Trump had a hand in redesigning the so-called presidential challenge coin, The Washington Post reported Friday.
  • The phrase “E Pluribus Unum” will be replaced by the Trump campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”

President Donald Trump has made several alterations to what is known as the presidential “challenge coin,” including replacing the US motto, “E Pluribus Unum,” with “Make America Great Again,” The Washington Post reported Friday.

The Latin phrase, which appears on US currency, means “Out of many, one.” Now the challenge coin features the Trump campaign slogan on both sides.

Presidents have for about two decades given the coins as mementos.

Other changes to the coin include removing the 13 arrows representing the original 13 colonies and making it much thicker than its predecessors. Trump’s name also appears three times on it.

One White House aide told The Post the coin was “very gold,” adding that Trump “wanted to weigh in on” its design.

Another aide told The Post that the coins would be “used in ways they haven’t been in the past,” possibly being distributed at rallies and to donors.

Here is the coin compared with past models:

Ethics experts questioned the inclusion of “Make America Great Again” on the coin, often gifted to members of the military.

“For the commander in chief to give a political token with a campaign slogan on it to military officers would violate the important principle of separating the military from politics, as well as diminishing the tradition of the coin,” Trevor Potter, a former Republican chairman of the Federal Election Commission, told The Post.

‘Dream big’: Trump wants to ‘make America great again’ in space https://briefnews.eu/dream-big-trump-wants-to-make-america-great-again-in-space/ https://briefnews.eu/dream-big-trump-wants-to-make-america-great-again-in-space/#respond Mon, 11 Dec 2017 22:45:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dream-big-trump-wants-to-make-america-great-again-in-space/

President Donald Trump has signed a space policy directive to refocus NASA’s mission on space exploration and to send a “manned extraterrestrial exploration” mission back to the moon, and then on to Mars.

“We are dreaming big,” Trump told a group of dignitaries gathered at the White House Monday. “The directive I’m signing today will refocus America’s space program on human exploration and discovery.”

“It marks an important step in returning American astronauts to the moon for the first time since 1972 for long-term exploration and use,” he added.

Trump said the plan was not only to leave a flag and footprint on the moon, but to establish a foundation for an eventual mission to Mars, “and perhaps, to many worlds beyond.”

“Toward Reclaiming America’s destiny in space. Space has so much to do with so many applications, including a military application,” said Trump. “We are the leader and we are going to stay the leader and increase it many fold.”

Neither the president nor the policy directive qualified what “military application” might mean. Weaponizing space, however, would violate the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, a key component of international space law of which the US is a signatory. Among its principles, it bars signatories from placing weapons of mass destruction in orbit of Earth, or installing them on the Moon or any other celestial body. It exclusively limits the use of the Moon and other celestial bodies to peaceful purposes and expressly prohibits their use for testing weapons of any kind, conducting military maneuvers, or establishing military bases, installations and fortifications.

The Trump administration’s policy will create incentives for private industry and international partners to return astronauts to the moon, “drive the burgeoning domestic space industry, bring new knowledge from the cosmos, and spur incredible technology,” the White House said.

It said the US will launch astronauts on an American-made rocket and crew system, while multiple American companies will provide the Pentagon with “American engines and rockets to launch national security payloads.”

“This is very exciting and very important for our country – and it also happens to mean jobs,” Trump said as he signed the directive.

The event coincided with the 45th anniversary of the last crewed mission to land on the moon. The Apollo 17 lunar lander touched down on the moon on December 11, 1972. Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, attended the ceremony.
