The Foxes want more than the £75m Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk earlier this year to part with Maguire, who has four years left on his contract. United boss Mourinho is ready to sell Marcos Rojo to Everton for £20m to help finance the move for the Sheffield United academy graduate. Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld and Barcelona’s Colombian World Cup star Yerry Mina are also targets ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline, just 24 hours before United’s Premier League season begins against Leicester at Old Trafford. Maguire has emerged as United’s prime target to bolster their backline having starred in England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals. The 25-year-old played on the left side of the Three Lions defence as Gareth Southgate guided his team to the last four in Russia. And a move to United would represent the next step in a remarkable rise for Maguire, who was playing Championship football as recently in 2016. Former England boss Sam Allardyce recently discussed the prospect of Maguire heading to United to play under Mourinho. “It depends what coach he gets next,” said Allardyce, when asked about the prospective switch. “If you get a good coach, they both take into consideration and stop this palaver about centre halves being good on the ball. “You’ve got to be a very good defender if you’re going to play for Manchester United. “I remember speaking to Sir Alex Ferguson and Brian Kidd about this. If you’re going to play for Manchester United you’ve got to be able to handle one-on-one. “Manchester United need to go and break teams down and to commit, so if you’re a central defender you have to sit there one-on-one and be able to cope with it. “This means you have to be one of the best defenders in the league. “You can still teach Harry that defensive side of the game. Everybody needs to keep being reminded about what their responsibilities are. “He’s certainly got the potential to get even better.” Maguire would join fellow defenders Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof at United. United hero Dimitar Berbatov has offered his backing to a raid on Leicester for the former Wigan loanee. “Manchester United need to sign a defender – probably Maguire from Leicester – he had a great World Cup, simply because of the way he controlled the ball and the vision he has on the pitch,” said Berbatov. “He has the ability of passing like a midfielder and stays calm under pressure. He would be a great addition to the squad.” Maguire and his representatives have made no comment so far on wanting to join Manchester United.

Man Utd transfer news: Claude Puel says he is confident of keeping Harry Maguire (Image: GETTY)
Jose Mourinho has identified Maguire as a top target after growing frustrated over the deal for Toby Alderweireld.
Leicester though are ready to play hardball and would demand a world record fee for a defender to let him leave for Manchester United.
Maguire only joined Leicester last summer from Hull in a deal worth up to £17m.
But an impressive World Cup has seen his value rocket and Foxes boss Puel wants to keep him.
“I am confident about the presence of Harry [Maguire] for this season. He is a very good player for us,” Puel told Sky Sports News.
“I was not surprised about his performance during this World Cup. We saw his progress during the second half of the season.
“He was great and played very well. It was not a surprise to see him perform well at this level in the international game.
“Of course for us he is a very good player – I wait for him with impatience because we need Harry and we need also Jamie [Vardy] because they are Leicester.”

However Puel refused to confirm Leicester would offer him a new deal in a bid to keep him.
“For us I think we have a good squad with good ambition. We have the capacity and the ability to keep our best player and to continue to improve and to perform together,” Puel added.
“If we lose a player just a few days before the beginning of the season without the ability to replace him because the transfer window for the Premier League will finish on August 9.
“To change the scene before the start of the season is not possible. He [Maguire] can continue to perform with Leicester and improve and that is the important thing always with a young player.
“To continue with us would be a fantastic thing for him and for us of course. I am confident with this and I think we can give him good ambition and to perform together with Leicester would be the best answer.”
Mourinho has admitted he is frustrated with the club’s transfer dealings and says he wants two more players – understood to be Maguire and Ivan Perisic – but believes he will only get one before the window shuts.

However Alderweireld and Barcelona’s Yerry Mina are options while Willian is an option in attack.
Mourinho has been told he must sell before buying more players after only three new signings this summer.
Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant have come in and Mourinho is a foul mood over the dealings.
Mourinho pulled no punches after his side’s 4-1 defeat to arch rivals Liverpool in Michigan on Saturday, saying he had got “nothing” from the game – a theme that has run throughout the crisis-hit tour of the States.
United and Liverpool drew a crowd of 101,254 to the Big House but Mourinho said he would not have bought a ticket to watch the game – which is certain to anger organisers of the International Champions Cup.
It is understood United are being paid around £30million for playing in the ICC, with Mourinho having effectively told fans to stay away from their final game against Real, a potential money-spinner for tour organisers.
“The atmosphere was good but if I was them I wouldn’t have come,” said Mourinho. “I wouldn’t have spent my money to watch these two teams.
“I watched Chelsea against Inter earlier and people had decided the beach was better. The stadium was empty.
“This is not our team, not our squad. We started the game with almost half of the players not going to belong to our squad. So this is not our squad.
“If you say reinforcements, you’re saying players I’d like to buy, to add to the squad, then that’s another thing. But this is not even 30 per cent of my squad, so don’t look to this that way.
“In relation to this game, we have four or five players who are dead, because they care for the club, for the team.
“They tried to give everything, even risking themselves because they don’t want to let all the kids do it by themselves.

“We’re trying to play these matches as best we can. But we can’t do it. What did this game give me? Nothing at all.
“We’re not playing here to improve the team or the dynamic, we’re playing here to just survive and have some not very ugly results.”
And he vented his frustrations on the transfers.
“I would like to have two more players, but I think I’m not going to have two,” said Mourinho. “I think it’s possible I’m going to have one.
“I gave a list to my club of five names a few months ago and I’ll wait to see if it’s possible to have one of these players.
“If it’s possible it’s possible, if not, it’s not. If it’s not possible, we keep fighting and working and believing in the players that we have.”

It will be Maguire’s first team coaching job since being sacked by the Rabbitohs at the end of last season. For the last five months, he’s worked as a high- performance coach with NRL referees.
David Kidwell didn’t reapply for the position following New Zealand’s dismal World Cup campaign last year when they were eliminated by Fiji in the quarter- finals.
Des Hasler and Geoff Toovey – both former Manly coaches – as well as ex-NSW State of Origin coach Laurie Daley, were also interviewed for the role.
Maguire was at the helm when the Rabbitohs won the 2014 premiership, which was their first title triumph in 43 years, but was pushed out after they failed to make the finals for two consecutive seasons.
New Zealand’s next Test is just under seven weeks away against England in Denver.

EastEnders fans experienced an extremely tense episode tonight, as Mick (played by Danny Dyer) refused to buckle to Aidan’s (Patrick Bergin) demands.
Last night’s monumentally anxious episode saw Mick sending the rest of his family away from the Queen Vic, in an attempt to protect them from Aidan’s advances.
After Linda Carter’s (Kellie Bright) exit, and Mick’s pals refusing to help him with the battle, viewers weren’t sure if he would make it out of the fight alive.
As Aidan arrived this evening, he made sure that Mick knew he meant business.
Hitting him a few times to get his message across, Aidan told Mick to succumb, give a public apology, and allow the drug dealers to continue using the Vic.
He said: “This is about control. Whoever runs this place runs the whole square.”
But Mick was determined to keep his pub drug free, and refused to give in.
While Whitney Carter (Shona McGarty) arrived to try and help Mick in his dire situation, she was forcibly removed from the pub.
Likewise, Masood Ahmed (Nitin Ganatra) later came and went, leaving Mick ready to face Aidan alone.
But just as the Carter family arrived with Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) to rectify the situation, Aidan called in more of his team and threatened to burn the pub down.
Just as it all looked entirely hopeless, Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) arrived with the catalyst that ended the stand-off.
Threatening to send proof of Aidan’s crimes to the police, Phil persuaded him to leave Walford.
Leaving Mick and his pals to celebrate, he exited which appeared to end the Carter’s night of horror.
However with no final rumble Aidan was left alive and well – and still holding a grudge.
Whilst he walked to the tube station, he looked back menacingly, hinting that his evil actions were not yet over.
EastEnders continues Monday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
This week’s EastEnders saw Mick (played by Danny Dyer) panicking after finding that petrol had been poured through his letter box.
The substance had been splashed over the toddler as he played in front of the door, causing Mick to panic.
On further inspection, Mick found that a petrol can had been left outside the door.
Attached was a note that read: “Thursday 8pm xx”.
This subtle threat came from Aidan Maguire (Patrick Bergin) after Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) called the police on the gangster’s lackey.
The drug dealer Cal (Jesse Rutherford) was arrested for selling his wares in the Vic’s bathrooms, much to the Aidan’s dismay.
What’s more, Aidan thinks that Mick has the stolen heist money, and has been consistently threatening him over getting it back.
BBC has released images of upcoming scenes from tonight’s episode, depicting the climax of the pair’s plot line.
The first image shows Aidan holding a lit match in the Vic, with one of his henchmen stood behind him with a petrol can.
This occurrence must be the progression of Monday’s petrol can threat, as Aidan has arrived to retrieve his money.
The second image depicts Mick bent over the pub’s piano as Aidan is attacking him with a pool cue.
So far, Aidan has been all talk, but this image proves that he is prepared to take on whoever he thinks owes him money.
Will this final confrontation show the end of the Vic? Or will it act as a persuasion technique for Aidan?
Mick has recently been in contact with Mel Owen (Tamzin Outhwaite), who provided him with a number for a hitman.
But will he go ahead with the murder?
EastEnders continues tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
The contents of Aidan’s (played by Patrick Bergin) mystery box were finally revealed in last night’s instalment of BBC‘s EastEnders after Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) came across them.
The Irishman had recruited Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters) to get rid of the box by putting them into a coffin, but he was caught by Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick).
It finally made it’s way into Phil’s hands last night after Jay told Sharon (Letitia Dean) what Aidan had been up to.
While Sharon frantically tried to find the box in Phil’s safe, it turns out her husband had it all along as he sat contemplating in the Arches for some time before finally opening the box.
Phil threw the contents of the jewellery box onto a table, where several teeth came tumbling out.
However, it wasn’t clear who the pearly whites could belong to.
Those watching at home thought the teeth could belong to Ben (Harry Reid) and took to Twitter to speculate.
One viewer questioned: “Are those Ben’s teeth?!?! That’s all I can think of #EastEnders.”
“#EastEnders just watched it… the teeth grossed me out. Phil was cagey about Ben when he came back… so I reckon it’s his…” another wrote.
A third added: “Are the teeth Ben’s????”
Ben was last seen fleeing England to head to France as he made off with the heist money.
Although unbeknownst to him, the cash had been swapped for a stack of Walford Gazette newspapers, and he only discovered the switch when he got to customs.
He managed to make off with some notes he had put into his jacket, and his treachery undoubtedly put him on Aidan’s hit list.
While Phil did follow his son across the Channel, he returned to Walford claiming he hadn’t found him.
It may be that Aidan succeeded in tracking him down, and Ben has paid the ultimate price for his actions.
EastEnders continues tomorrow at 7.30pm on BBC One.
EastEnders‘ Mick Carter (played by Danny Dyer) is offered a way out after falling victim to Aidan’s (Patrick Bergin) cunning ways.
The Queen Vic landlord, who owes Aidan a substantial amount of money, could have the villain murdered in a shocking new twist.
In upcoming episodes of the hit BBC series, Mick asks former police officer Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) to help him find dirt on Aidan.
He is determined to handle the situation privately after his wife Linda (Kellie Bright) threatened to call the police again.
The Carters have been living in fear ever since Aidan said he would harm the entire family if Mick did not comply with him.
Meanwhile, Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) discovers that Mel Owen (Tamzin Outhwaite) knows Aidan, however, he is pressured into keeping it a secret.
But when he has a conversation with Mick, he reveals that Mel is connected to Aidan and has been for sometime.
Later, Aidan catches Mick leaving the club and warns Mel to stay away from him before punching an unsuspecting Billy.
Scared that Mick could be in serious danger, Mel hands him a number to call to have Aidan taken out once and for all.
However, Mick is uncomfortable with Mel’s suggestion to kill off Aidan and tells her he’s not that type of man.
When Mick returns to the pub he discovers that petrol has been poured all over the place and that Aidan has left a note warning him that the Carters have until Tuesday evening to hand over the money.
Elsewhere, Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) returns to Albert Square after visiting his son Ben (Harry Reid), but he is blindsided when he finds out that Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) has reopened the club and hired Mel as a manager.
With the reopening of the club, Aidan grows suspicious of Phil and asks him how he could possibly afford to relaunch.
Meanwhile, Phil is still fearful about the missing money. He confronts Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) and demands to know exactly where the cash is.
Will Aidan suspect Phil is responsible for the missing money? And if so, what lengths will he go to get it back?
EastEnders airs tonight on BBC One at 8pm.
EastEnders has hinted that the Carters could be in danger as Aidan (who is played by Patrick Bergin) continues to take revenge on Mick (Danny Dyer).
In upcoming episodes, Aidan ruthlessly targets the Carters in an attempt to bring Mick to his knees.
Viewers will see the family struggle to tackle a drug problem at the Queen Vic, which they discover is being orchestrated by Aidan.
As Aidan closes in on the family and threatens them, the Carters become fearful of what he could possibly do next.
Later, Aidan delivers Mick another terrifying warning, which could put the future of his family on the line.
Determined to get what he wants, Aidan forces Mick to meet up with him but it only leaves the pub landlord more frightful.
After Linda (Kellie Bright) returns from her short break, she is petrified to learn what has been happening in her absence.
Despite Mick’s efforts to convince her nothing is wrong, Linda can’t shake off the prospect of uncertainty.
Unfortunately, another situation arises, which leaves them both in doubt and fearing they could be in danger.
Eventually, things go from bad to worse when Aidan pressures Mick to accept a large sum of “hush money”.
When a troubled Linda finds out what Mick has done she decides something has to be done and attempts to sort it out.
Alarmed that Linda has involved herself, Mick makes the bold decision to protect his family at all cost.
Will Mick succeed in saving his family? Or will Aidan finally get the revenge he has been hoping for?
Meanwhile, tension grows between Mel Owen (Tamzin Outhwaite) and teenage son Hunter (Charlie Winter) as they try to settle into life in Albert Square.
Hunter will grow to dislike Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) when his mum begins to reject him in favour of working with Jack.
EastEnders airs tonight on BBC One at 7.30pm.
Viewers at home will know that Mick (who is played by Danny Dyer) and his wife Linda (Kellie Bright) used cash from a diamond ring Calum ‘Halfway’ Highway (Tony Clay) gave them to buy back the pub.
Halfway handed the couple the £220,000 diamond ring, which he had stolen off Ciara Maguire (Denise McCormack) after the failed New Year’s Day heist.
But resident bad boy Aidan (Patrick Bergin) will suspect the Carter’s stole the money from the heist to help fund the pub.
Aidan will have Mick bundled into the back of a car by a group of thugs after becoming suspicious about where he found the money to save the pub.
In scenes set to shock viewers tonight, Aidan will quiz Mick and his son Johnny (Ted O’Reilly) about how it was possible for them to find the money in time to stop The Vic from closing down.
However, he will be dissatisfied with Johnny’s response and will use untraditional methods to determine whether the Carter’s have, in fact, fed him a pack of lies.
Tonight, a furious Aidan will arrange for Mick to be kidnapped by his accomplices and brought to him for further interrogation.
Will he torture Mick to get to the bottom of it all? And if so, how will Mick respond?
Elsewhere on EastEnders, Tamzin Outhwaite, who plays Mel Owen, has hinted that her character’s teenage son Hunter (Charlie Winter) could be hiding a dark secret.
The 47-year-old actress made her return to the soap earlier this month after nearly a decade away from the show.
Her on-screen alter ego was last seen on Albert Square heading to Spain with her husband Steve Owen’s (Martin Kemp) baby.
Now, she has returned to Walford with her 15-year-old son but it would seem the child harbours some ill feelings towards his mother.
Speaking to TV Times, Tamzin shared: “My own kids are much younger, and we’re idiots and jokers together, whereas a 15-16-year-old boy is a very different dynamic.
“He’s resentful and angry – everything that teenagers are. It’s a lot less fun being a mum in EastEnders than it is for me in real life! Mel’s walking on eggshells.”
She later went on to admit that the reason she agreed to return to the soap was simply to do with family logistics.
“I was doing auditions and reading for stuff that wasn’t filming in London, and I wasn’t sure how I was going to make it work.
“Then [executive producer] John Yorke organised a meeting, and his plans made me very excited. I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I could do a lot more with Mel’.
“And then thinking, ‘It’s a 35-minute drive from your house, you can go home to the children every night and you get new scripts every day’, because EastEnders is very quick and I like that.”
EastEnders continues tonight at 7.30pm on BBC One.
