Sean Bean in a medieval drama series? What will they think of next!
The Game of Thrones actor has found a new scheming medieval family to navigate, except the twist is not that he’s going to die (though that may very well happen) but that Bean is playing the descendent of a character played by his Game of Thrones son, Richard Madden. Madden had starred in the first season of the Netflix historical anthology series, Medici: Masters of Florence, which followed the titular wealthy family in 15th century Florence. Now Bean will play his descendent in the second season, Medici: The Magnificent, which takes place20 years after the first season at the heart of the Renaissance.
Netflix as unveiled its first look at the period drama Medici: The Magnificent, which stars Bean and Teen Wolf‘s Daniel Sharman in the second season of the anthology series. The season follows the renowned historical figure, Lorenzo the Magnificent (Sharman) who assumes leadership of the family-run bank. But as he begins to enact change on the powerful bank, it brings him into conflict with the head of Florence’s other powerful banking family, Jacopo Pazzi (Bean) who swears to defeat Lorenzo.
Along with Bean and Sharman, the cast includes Sarah Parish (Broadchurch), Bradley James (Merlin), Alessandra Mastronardi (Master of None), Synnøve Karslen (Clique), Raoul Bova (The Tourist) and Julian Sands (Gotham).
I had never heard of this series until now, though Bean’s inclusion intrigues me — though the question remains whether he’ll remain in the season for very long, given his penchant for dying spectacularly onscreen. Unfortunately, the lack of a fantasy aspect doesn’t compel me much, and I’ve never been one for picking up period drama series, as much as I like the films. And while Bean is a strong performer, it’s up in the air whether lead Daniel Sharman can carry a series on his own.
Here is the official synopsis for Medici: The Magnificent:
Watch the trailer for Netflix’s Medici: The Magnificent, the second season of the ongoing anthology series that follows Italy’s legendary Medici family, taking place 20 years after Medici: Masters of Florence. Season 2 takes us to the heart of the Renaissance through one of the most important historical figures of all time, Lorenzo the Magnificent – where an attempt on Piero de Medici’s life forces his son Lorenzo (Daniel Sharman) to assume leadership of the family-run bank. Once in power, young Lorenzo resolves to do things differently, which swiftly brings him into conflict with the head of Florence’s other powerful banking family, Jacopo Pazzi (Sean Bean).
All episodes of Medici: The Magnificent debut on January 25, 2018.

The Game: Netflix’s regular top-of-the-month movie purge is surprisingly light in December – unless you’ve got a particular affinity for Air Bud movies, and I know some of you do – but here’s one worth watching while you have the chance. David Fincher’s 1995 sophomore feature Seven was a career-maker, confirming that the stylish music video/commercial director had genuine filmmaking chops, and so contemporary critics were somewhat baffled by his follow-up, a slick, commercial thriller starring slick, commercial thriller king Michael Douglas. But upon reexamination, it’s clear that Fincher (and an admirably game Douglas) were turning that whole ‘90s subgenre, and the characters Douglas played in them, upside down, while subtly riffing on Fincher’s own (lazy) reputation as a control freak. Moody, stylish, and haunting, and that twist is still a humdinger.
ON FILMSTRUCK
Cluny Brown: As you’ve probably heard, FilmStruck is shutting down on Thursday, barely two years after its launch, and the whole thing is pretty upsetting. There’s more to say about that, but let’s keep our collective eye on the ball here: there are movies to watch before it’s too late. Chief among them – the one that seems to appear in everyone’s tweets and posts of cramming recommendations – is this 1946 comedy/drama from the one and only Ernst Lubitsch, with Jennifer Jones as a plumber’s niece and Charles Boyer as the Czech refugee who falls in love with her. And why is everyone recommending it? Because even though Lubitsch is one of the greats, and even though this was the film he made after To Be or Not to Be and Heaven Can Wait, and even though it’s the penultimate film of his career (he died the year after its release), it’s not available on DVD. And it’s not available for rental or purchase on any other digital platform. When FilmStruck shutters, it’s gone! You just won’t be able to see it! Everything is fine!
Placido: This 1961 comedy from the great Spanish writer/director Luis García Berlanga (The Executioner) is a triple-sell: not on DVD, not available digitally, and a holiday movie too. It concerns a small town’s efforts to help their poor on Christmas Eve, but this is a rare holiday comedy without the schmaltz; as usual, Berlanga’s rapier wit and mild cynicism pairs snugly with his warm humanism, resulting in an effort that’s overdue for addition into the holiday canon.
ON BLU-RAY
The Magnificent Ambersons: Orson Welles’ 1942 Citizen Kane follow-up is surrounded by one of the great tragedies in all of cinema: just after wrapping photography, Welles was sent off to make a goodwill film in Central and South America, and while he was gone, the picture was taken from him and greatly reworked. Scenes were reshot under another director (including its original, melancholy ending) and something like 40 minutes of Welles’ material was tossed and, sadly, destroyed. But Welles fans spent so many years mourning what might’ve been, they only recently got around to celebrating what was: this adaptation of Booth Tarkington’s family novel is, even in this butchered form, an evocative and powerful memory play, full of stunning images and unforgettable performances. It was unavailable for home viewing for years, and only hit DVD a few years ago (as part of a Kane package); this new Criterion edition finally gives the picture the upgrade, and respect, it deserves. (Includes audio commentaries, new and archival interviews, featurettes, Mercury Theatre radio plays, trailer, and excerpt from an earlier silent adaptation.)
True Stories: Criterion is undertaking a similarly heroic act of cinematic rescue with this new release of David Byrne’s wonderful 1986 comedy/musical, available for years as only a lousy full-frame DVD. It deserves far better. Hot off the success of Stop Making Sense, Byrne somehow convinced Warner Brothers to let him co-write, direct, and star in this oddball assemblage of tabloid-inspired stories, set in a small Texas town during its celebration of that state’s sesquicentennial. Sweet, stylish, and charming, it’s full of terrific tunes, memorable characters, and pitch-perfect performances; Spalding Gray, Swoosie Kurtz, and Byrne himself all make impressions, but the scene-stealer is a young John Goodman, heartbreaking as a bear of a guy who just wants to fall in love. (Includes documentaries, featurettes, deleted scenes, trailer, and soundtrack CD.)

Lexus’ RX450h L is rivalling SUV competition from Audi, Land Rover and Volvo
The new model has been added, Lexus says, in response to customer demand for seven-seat practicality and to attract more buyers with younger families.
Just 9 per cent of the regular five-seat RX buyers have children aged between three and nine, while that number is 35 per cent for the rival seven-seater Audi Q7 and 46 per cent for Volvo XC90.
The car looks better proportioned than the more coupé-like standard RX but takes on a stance that is maybe more raised estate car than imposing SUV.
From the front it looks like the existing RX L and has a huge gaping grille and slender LED horizontal lights on all except the entry trim level.
But the RX L has been completely redesigned at the rear, with a taller roofline giving more headroom for the new third row of passengers, while the body has also been lengthened by 4.3in to give them some legroom.
It looks the same as the five-seater all the way to the back where the lengthened body, steeper rear window and less swooping roofline house those extra two passengers.
One key advantage the RX L has over rivals is emissions.
The Lexus brand and its Toyota parent company have led the way in regular hybrid technology.
The car doesn’t need plugging in but combines a 3.5-litre petrol engine with two electric motors producing 50kW to give an equivalent of 308bhp.
The hybrid uses energy created while the car is braking to recharge the on-board battery but offers only a couple of miles of battery-powered driving at a time (compared to 30 miles for plug-in models).
The RX’s system works well, though, and quickly and constantly recharges itself for low-speed electric driving.
This system, branded RX450h L, is the only engine option and boasts a 0 to 60mph time of 8.0 seconds along with a 112mph top speed plus 47.1mpg (on paper) with 138g/km emissions – which is good but a poorer average fuel economy figure than equivalent diesels.
Hybrid is the best bet but higher-mileage motorway runs will see a diesel car a more sensible decision from a fuel cost point of view.
The RX L costs up to £2,450 more than its five-seat equivalent and has a third-row climate control that, oddly, can’t be overridden from the front.
It’s priced in the same £50,000 ballpark as its rivals for the most popular trim, though the standard equipment offering stands up well against the competition.
So, on paper, the Lexus makes a lot of sense, especially as it’s very well-equipped but, while not bad in the main, the RX is a very forgettable drive.
The hybrid powertrain is much-improved over the poor efforts of previous generations of Toyota and Lexus hybrids but still suffers a degree of there being more noise than feeling of forward motion under strong acceleration.
Despite the noise, at cruising speeds the refinement levels are excellent and driving on battery power at low speeds is a therapeutic counter to the stresses of urban driving.
The biggest flaw though, is the chronically poor infotainment system.
The 12.3in screen is large enough, and offers a decent rear camera view for reversing, but the mouse-style controls are mounted between the front seats and you have to take your eyes off the road for too long to use it.
Otherwise, though, the interior is of premium quality, if lacking in a real design flair or character.
The important point of the RX L is that new third row of seats.
Lexus says they are for child use or for adults on short journeys.
The middle row of seats slides by 5.9in, best in class in terms of flexibility according to Lexus.
For short trips it’s possible to move the seating positions around so adults in all three rows would have enough legroom but headroom isn’t great at the back and the central seat in row two is small.
So transporting seven adults wouldn’t be great, but medium-sized children will have no problem in row three.
The rear seats also fold electrically.
The RX L adds some useful practicality to the Lexus line-up, though the price tag is a bit steep.
The driving experience, so-so looks and horrible infotainment controls apart, it makes a decent case for itself, especially for anyone with an eye on running costs, or concerned about the future of diesel engines.
The night skyline of the Chinese city of Guangzhou lit up by a spectacular show in which hundreds of drones took to the air. In putting on the show, the city broke its own world record for the biggest number of drones involved in one performance.
Spectators reached for their phones to capture the dazzling light show as some 1,180 drones soared up against the backdrop of futuristic skyscrapers, gleaming in different colors. Marking the end of the 2017 Fortune Global Forum on Thursday, the display saw the swarm of aircrafts forming the Chinese ideograms for “innovation,”“open” and “fortune.” A ship and a kapok flower, the city’s official symbol, also showed up in the sky.
The eight-minute show was orchestrated by a single operator, the Asia Times reported. The drone manufacturer eHang developed a system to manage the one-ton squad on a single console, enabling the aircrafts to sync with each other.
“Drones can produce very impressive artistic effects,” company official in charge of the event Li Zhiyuan said, as quoted by the SCMP. “We hope that drone performances can one day replace fireworks in the business of night sky illumination.” Each of the drones had a price tag of some 10,000 yuan ($ 1,500), he added.

Where is Gunpowder set?
Gunpowder is largely set in London in 1605 as it focusses on Robert’s plan to blow up Parliament.
However, some of the series is set in surrounding countryside, with Liv Tyler who stars as Anne Vaux revealing that is where she spent most of her time.
Where was Gunpowder filmed?
Gunpowder was filmed in a number of locations throughout Yorkshire including Keighley, Ilkley, Kirkstall and Beverley.
Kirkstall Abbey, which is in Leeds and founded as a place of worship in 1152, is one of the many places the BBC series was shot.
Filming also took place on a section of moorland between Ilkley and Keighley as well as at National Trust-owned Grade 1 listed property East Riddlesden Hall.
Oakwell Hall, Dalton Mills and Beverley Minster were also used as locations for Gunpowder.
Haddon Hall, which has over 900 years of history, magnificent gardens and its own chapel, also features in the series.
The building, which dates back to the 12th Century has been used as a location for Pride and Prejudice and The Other Boleyn Girl.
When does Gunpowder air and how many episodes will there be?
Gunpowder begins on Saturday on BBC One at 9.10pm.
The BBC series is made up of three instalments and stars Kit, Liv Tyler, Mark Gatiss and Pete Mullan.
Gunpowder airs Saturday on BBC One at 9.10pm.

Kicking and Screaming: Your film editor is thrilled enough that Netflix picked up Noah Baumbach’s latest, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) – but if that acquisition and distribution also gave them a reason to return Baumbach’s debut feature to their streaming library, then God bless the whole deal all over again. This chatty, wise, and uproariously funny 1995 comedy/drama concerns a group of four college friends and the straight-up emotional paralysis they experience in the year following graduation. It’s sharp-witted and endlessly quotable (“What I used to be able to pass off as a bad summer could now potentially turn into a bad life”), and its cast can’t be beat: Parker Posey, Josh Hamilton, Eric Stoltz, Elliot Gould, Olivia d’Abo, Chris Eigeman, Cara Buono, Carlos Jacott, Jason Wiles, and Jessica Hecht.

The Magnificent Seven: You’re just asking for trouble when you remake a Western as iconic as The Magnificent Seven, but hell, that’s probably what they told John Sturges when he proposed remaking The Seven Samurai. And no, Antoine Fuqua’s take doesn’t match its predecessors – but it’s an excellent showcase for star Denzel Washington, whose sturdy honor and quiet determination are such a cornerstone of his onscreen persona, it’s sort of shocking that it took him this long to do a Western. Fuqua surrounds him with an ace ensemble (including Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’onofrio, Peter Sarsgaard, and Byung-Hun Lee), and the story’s turns and payoffs make it, as ever, quite the crowd-pleaser.
ON DVD / VOD
Beatriz at Dinner: This uneasy comedy of manners became surprisingly (and unfortunately) timely on November 9, telling as it does the story of a fabulously wealthy, unapologetically racist blowhard real estate developer (John Lithgow) who finds himself locking horns with an immigrant humanitarian (Salma Hayek) at an intimate dinner party. I know, I know, it sounds like the worst kind of allegorical pap, but in all fairness, screenwriter Mike White and director Miguel Arteta (who previously collaborated on Chuck & Buck and The Good Girl) didn’t realize they were crafting a trenchant political statement. What they presumably set out to make, they did: a keenly observed and frequently upsetting portrayal of the rules of polite society, and of a woman who decides not to play by them. (No bonus features.)

It Comes at Night: Trey Edward Shults made a splashy debut with last year’s micro-budget psychological drama Krisha; here, armed with a bigger budget and a few recognizable faces, he confirms his place among our most exciting young filmmakers. As with Krisha, the story itself isn’t particularly earth-shattering – a post-apocalyptic tale of friendly and familial bonds sorely tested by paranoia and fear – but Shults’ rattling, raw style lodges itself under your skin, and in your head. A lean, mean, frightening piece of work; give it a watch, and then come back for our thoughts on its ending. (Includes audio commentary and featurette.)
ON BLU-RAY
Festival: For three years, from 1963 to 1965, director/cinematographer Murray Lerner headed up to Rhode Island for the Newport Folk Festival, and ended up capturing music history in the making. Aside from stirring performances by the likes of Johnny Cash, Joan Baez, Odetta, Howlin’ Wolf, Pete Seeger, Misssissippi John Hurt, Sun House, and Peter, Paul, & Mary, his camera caught the transformation of Bob Dylan: rising star in ’63, folk hero in ’64, and (most memorably) heretic in ’65. Lerner went back and put together a release of all his Dylan footage a few years ago, and that disc is worth having – but Festival is even better, a contemporaneous document that not only showcases the lightning in a bottle that was Mr. Zimmerman, but the scene he first embraced, and then, in many ways, left behind. (Includes featuerettes and outtake performances.)
E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial: Yeah, I know, we probably don’t need another Blu-ray release of Steven Spielberg’s 1982 mega-hit, “35th anniversary limited edition” and “4K Ultra-HD Experience” or not. (Hell, this is my third copy of the movie on Blu-ray alone.) But all the bells and whistles, and the anniversary reminders of its cultural ubiquity, stand in striking contrast to the movie itself; it’s such an intimate movie, much more than any blockbuster since, focused primarily on the members of the family, the world they inhabit in their little suburban home, and how that world is disrupted by a being from another world entirely. It was only Spielberg’s sixth theatrical feature, but the confidence on display is astonishing – he veers from warmth to humor to suspense to action, and never steps wrong. (Includes 4K version, deleted scenes, featurettes, and trailer.)

The 64-year-old star played James Bond four times from 1995-2002, however his tenure was far surpassed by Sir Roger’s seven movies.
Now Pierce has paid tribute following news of Sir Roger’s death earlier today, with a message and photo of the two of them on the Goldeneye set in 1995.
On Facebook he wrote: “Dear Sir Roger Moore, It is indeed with a heavy heart that I hear the news of your passing this morning.
“You were a big part of my life, from The Saint to James Bond.
He added: “I know he was loved by his family and many others.”
No doubt tributes from Sean Connery, Timothy Dalton and Daniel Craig are sure to follow.
Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week we’re introduced to a master chef that isn’t named Bourdain, Ramsay, or that guy from the Domino’s test kitchen, we talk animated animals, a movie without people, a movie with one person in particular, and we see what the boys from Trainspotting have been up to.
T2 Trainspotting Trailer
4 things
1. It’s obviously not going to be as good as the first
2. Danny Boyle recognizes the first fact
3. I realize the first fact
4. You ever just want to will something to be good? I kind of feel that way about this movie.
21 years ago, Boyle gave us a cultural touchstone as affecting as Requiem for a Dream for the way he delved into the dirtiness of drug addiction. It was incredibly moving, funny, was sharply written and acted, and had a fantastic soundtrack. It was the movie I took my wife on for a first date (yeah, I only realize now what a huge gambit that was) but it was a rock solid movie from beginning to end. So, what to make of what we get here? It’s not as electric as the first one we got months ago but it’s pretty good at going to the ol’ nostalgia well to stick in “Lust for Life” as its musical bed along with trotting out all the kudos it has received since being released in the UK. This is about as nakedly promotional as it gets but, again, I just want this to be good. Here’s to hoping it is.
Animals Season 2 Trailer
People either dig it or hate it.
Based on a 60% score for season 1 on Rotten Tomatoes you would be hard pressed gauge how most people feel about this animated series. Myself, I find the trailer to be wildly irreverent and fresh. The snippets that we’re given are just flat-out bizarre. It tickles some part of my brain that truly appreciates wildly scattershot, narratively ambiguous content. And, as soon as the music kicks in that’s all I need to make this a magical promo that has all the hallmarks for something that appeals to my basest sensibilities.
Homo Sapiens Trailer
Any Samsara fans in the house?
What I am positively dialed into here in director Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s documentary is just how spartan it is. Not only that, but the lack of any movement to divert my gaze, a meditative examination into scenes that feel like one tableau after another, without any narration has me all in on this project. With the evenly spaced pull-quotes and the radical changes in environs what you end up with is a movie that seems to be saying many different things with your interpretation being your only guide.
Actor Martinez Trailer
Taking a different angle here.
Lindsay Burdge. Burdge is an incredible actor who has been in four exceptional roles (A Teacher, The Invitation, The Midnight Swim, Lace Crater) and while this doesn’t seem like the deep meditative exercise that any of those four provided she still shines bright in this one. Directors Mike Ott and Nathan Silver take a well-worn yarn with a twist of a guy who wants to make a movie with him being the lead. Of course wackiness ensues but, as I mentioned, it’s really the addition of Burdge that makes this one I want to put on the radar if for no other reason to see how she flourishes in this role.
Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent Trailer
Never heard of him.
Then again, my tastes don’t stray further than the local Chipotle so what could a philistine like me know about a master chef? Nothing, but that’s the fun part of watching documentaries like this. Just to be clear, I have zero insight in what it takes to be masterful at this position, nor know any of the major players besides the ones everyone else knows through pop culture, but just looking at the variety of documentaries on Netflix alone makes me giddy. This is not meant as a slight, but while I don’t think director Lydia Tenaglia has done anything extraordinary here the trailer still entices with its story of someone who was at the zenith of their power and then vanished. These kinds of stories, be it people in the arts, in business, you name it, are inherently interesting to me and, thus, now you get to be subjected to something else I’m going to need to seek out and consume.
Nota bene: If you have any suggestions of trailers to possibly be included in this column, even have a trailer of your own to pitch, please let me know by sending me a note at Christopher_Stipp@yahoo.com or look me up via Twitter at @Stipp
