Trump — who once endorsed DeSantis as his ‘great friend’ — slams the ‘ungrateful’ Florida governor, saying ‘I made him,’ report says https://briefnews.eu/trump-who-once-endorsed-desantis-as-his-great-friend-slams-the-ungrateful-florida-governor-saying-i-made-him-report-says/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-who-once-endorsed-desantis-as-his-great-friend-slams-the-ungrateful-florida-governor-saying-i-made-him-report-says/#respond Sun, 25 Sep 2022 01:56:30 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/trump-who-once-endorsed-desantis-as-his-great-friend-slams-the-ungrateful-florida-governor-saying-i-made-him-report-says/ In this November 3, 2018 file photo, then-President Donald Trump stands behind Ron DeSantis during a rally in Pensacola, Florida, during his first gubernatorial run.
In this November 3, 2018 file photo, then-President Donald Trump stands behind Ron DeSantis during a rally in Pensacola, Florida, during his first gubernatorial run.

  • Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis haven't spoken in months, The Washington Post reported.
  • Trump endorsed DeSantis during his 2018 gubernatorial campaign but hasn't campaigned for him this year.
  • Privately, Trump now slams DeSantis as "ungrateful," telling advisers: "I made him," WaPo reported.

Though former President Donald Trump vigorously campaigned in support of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2018, the one-time allies have grown distant amid rumors they will soon launch competing campaigns for the 2024 presidential election.

Sources familiar with the pair's interactions told The Washington Post the two haven't spoken in months, despite Trump once saying DeSantis would make a good Vice President if he changed up his ticket in 2024.

Privately, Trump now lambasts the man he once referred to as his "great friend," calling the Florida governor "ungrateful" for his earlier endorsement, The Washington Post reported.

"I made him," The Washington Post reported Trump told his aides while monitoring DeSantis' public appearances and polling numbers.

Though neither has officially announced a 2024 presidential run, the two politicians are widely regarded as expected frontrunners in the upcoming race, which Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell predicted would feature a "crowded" primary.

"I don't understand what happened here," The Washington Post reported Trump said of DeSantis' diminishing support. "I don't understand why he doesn't appreciate me more."

Trump has made similar comments before, criticizing DeSantis for his "dull personality."

In response, DeSantis has taken steps to distinguish himself from the former president on the campaign trail, though he hasn't explicitly criticized Trump. His recent decision to fly asylum seekers to Martha's Vineyard sent the former president into a rage, according to a report from Rolling Stone, spurring political analysts to argue that DeSantis was taking the spotlight off of Trump and furthering their rivalry.

The strategy appears to be working: DeSantis has out-fundraised the former president this year to the tune of $ 43 million, according to data collected by OpenSecrets. Polling also suggests the governor has an advantage over the former president in a hypothetical primary match-up in 2024.

Representatives for Trump and DeSantis did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

The FDA may have unintentionally made ‘Nyquil Chicken’ go viral on TikTok https://briefnews.eu/the-fda-may-have-unintentionally-made-nyquil-chicken-go-viral-on-tiktok/ https://briefnews.eu/the-fda-may-have-unintentionally-made-nyquil-chicken-go-viral-on-tiktok/#respond Fri, 23 Sep 2022 00:26:03 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-fda-may-have-unintentionally-made-nyquil-chicken-go-viral-on-tiktok/ If you’ve been anywhere near social media, local news, or late-night talk shows in the last few days, you’ve probably heard something about “Nyquil Chicken,” a supposedly viral TikTok “challenge” that’s exactly what it sounds like: cooking chicken in a marinade of cold medicine.

News about the supposed trend is usually accompanied by vomit-inducing photos of raw chicken simmering in dark green syrup. It’s both disgusting and, as the FDA recently reminded the public, just as toxic as it looks. But it turns out Nyquil Chicken was neither new, nor particularly viral, and the FDA’s bizarrely-timed warning may have backfired, making the meme more popular than ever.

First, a bit of history: As reporter Ryan Borderick points out in his newsletter Garbage Day, Nyquil Chicken originated as a joke on 4Chan in 2017. The meme briefly resurfaced in January where it got some traction on TikTok before once again fading away.

Then, last week, the FDA — inexplicably — issued a press release warning about the dangers of cooking chicken in Nyquil. In a notice titled “A Recipe for Danger: Social Media Challenges Involving Medicines,” the FDA refers to it as a “recent” trend. But they cite no recent examples, and it’s unclear why they opted to push out a warning more than eight months after the meme had first appeared on TikTok.

TikTok is blocking searches for the
Screenshot / TikTok

Now, in what we can only hope will be a valuable lesson on unintended consequences, we know that it was likely the FDA’s warning about Nyquil chicken that pushed this “challenge” to new levels of virality, at least on TikTok. TikTok has now confirmed that on September 14th, the day before the FDA notice, there were only five searches for “Nyquil chicken” in the app. But by September 21st, that number skyrocketed “by more than 1,400 times,” according to BuzzFeed News, which first reported the TikTok search data.

TikTok, which has recently taken steps to limit the spread of both dangerous “challenges” and “alarmist warnings” about hoaxes, is now blocking searches for “Nyquil Chicken.” Searches now direct users to resources encouraging users to “stop and take a moment to think” before pursuing a potentially dangerous “challenge.”

As both BuzzFeed and Gizmodo note, there’s little evidence that people are actually cooking chicken in Nyquil, much less actually ingesting it. That’s a good thing because, as the FDA makes very clear, doing so is not only extremely gross, but highly toxic. But the whole thing is yet another example of why we should all be more skeptical of panic-inducing viral “challenges.”

Victrola made a $799 turntable that can connect to any Sonos speaker https://briefnews.eu/victrola-made-a-799-turntable-that-can-connect-to-any-sonos-speaker/ https://briefnews.eu/victrola-made-a-799-turntable-that-can-connect-to-any-sonos-speaker/#respond Thu, 22 Sep 2022 12:30:18 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/victrola-made-a-799-turntable-that-can-connect-to-any-sonos-speaker/ The vinyl resurgence shows no sign of slowing down — but streaming services are still the preferred way for most people to listen to music these days. As such, smart speakers like the Amazon Echo, HomePod mini and the line of Sonos products make a ton of sense for most people. But most of those speakers don’t work with turntables, which can make things complicated if you want to both play records and stream tunes.

Victrola, a brand that’s been making record players for more than 100 years, is mostly known at this point for making entry-level turntables with built-in speakers in a variety of vintage-inspired designs. But today, the company introduced the Stream Carbon, a $ 799 turntable that can directly connect to a Sonos system, which means you’ll be able to stream your records all over your home. Victrola says this is just the first of more planned devices in the Stream lineup, too.

You’ll need to set up the turntable using a Victrola Stream app, but once that’s set, you’ll be able to control the Stream Carbon via the Sonos app or a control knob on the device itself. Just as you can play music on any single Sonos speaker, a group of speakers or everything in your system, you’ll be able to send music from the turntable to any combo of Sonos devices in the same fashion. As for compatibility, Victrola told me that it works with any Sonos speaker, regardless of whether it works on the older S1 system or the current S2. Given the vast majority of speakers work with the newer S2 system software, most people won’t even have to think about this — the Stream Carbon should just work with your existing setup without any issues.

As for the Stream Carbon’s hardware, it’s a belt-driven turntable with an aluminum platter and Ortofon 2M Red cartridge. It has a built-in preamp and traditional RCA outputs, if you want to hook it up to older speakers. Naturally, it has wireless connectivity, but you can also hook it up to Ethernet if you want a more stable connection. Given the Sonos integration, the Stream Carbon unsurprisingly skips out on having a Bluetooth connection or USB output.

Design-wise, it’s a minimal turntable without a full dust cover; there’s just a protector for the arm. It should look right at home next to any of Sonos’ similarly minimalist speakers. The aforementioned control knob is located right on the front of the device — it’s not clear yet how exactly it works, but Victrola says it can control both volume as well as speaker playback groups so you don’t have to hunt around in the app once you’re up and running.

Sonos has long positioned its flagship Five speaker as a good option to use with turntables, as it has an auxiliary input jack; the company even sells a $ 950 set with a Pro-Ject TI Phono SB turntable and a Five speaker. That’s a lot of money, but considering the Stream Carbon costs $ 799 on its own, it’s worth considering as an alternative. Sonos also sells the Port, a $ 449 device that connects a stereo, receiver or turntable to Sonos speakers. But if you already have existing Sonos products, the Stream Carbon should be an easy, albeit expensive way to play records across multiple speakers.

You can pre-order the Stream Carbon now, and the company says they’ll start shipping in October. And if the $ 799 price puts you off, Victrola says more Stream turntables will be coming — hopefully at a lower price point.

Florida officials made fake ‘official-looking’ brochure advertising refugee benefits for migrants, lawsuit against Ron DeSantis says https://briefnews.eu/florida-officials-made-fake-official-looking-brochure-advertising-refugee-benefits-for-migrants-lawsuit-against-ron-desantis-says/ https://briefnews.eu/florida-officials-made-fake-official-looking-brochure-advertising-refugee-benefits-for-migrants-lawsuit-against-ron-desantis-says/#respond Wed, 21 Sep 2022 03:03:30 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/florida-officials-made-fake-official-looking-brochure-advertising-refugee-benefits-for-migrants-lawsuit-against-ron-desantis-says/ Gov. Ron Desantis speaking.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis speaks at a press conference on September 7, 2022, in Miami, Florida.

  • Migrants who were flown to Martha's Vineyard filed a lawsuit against Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday.
  • Migrants were made to believe that they would receive refugee benefits upon arrival, lawsuit says.
  • They received "official-looking materials" including a brochure "manufactured" by Florida officials.

Florida officials and agencies used several tactics to lure migrants on a chartered flight to Martha's Vineyard, including making a fake brochure that purports refugee benefits, according to a class-action lawsuit.

On September 14, 50 migrants, most of whom were from Venezuela, were flown in two chartered planes from Texas to Martha's Vineyard as part of a political stunt by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to criticize border policies under the Biden administration.

Now, a group of those migrants is taking action against DeSantis and other state officials and agencies in a class-action lawsuit filed on Tuesday. Lawyers representing the migrants accused DeSantis and Florida officials of plotting an "illegal scheme" to "defraud vulnerable immigrants to advance a political motive."

Part of that "scheme," according to the lawsuit, was to make "false promises and false representations" of potential employment and housing, among other benefits, upon arriving on Martha's Vineyard.

For example, just before they arrived on the island, migrants were given a "shiny, red folder" filled with "official-looking materials," including a brochure titled "Massachusetts Refugee Benefits."

The brochure contained misleading information on resettlement aid that, in reality, was not available for migrants seeking asylum in Massachusetts, as previously reported by Insider.

The lawsuit goes further by accusing DeSantis and other officials of fabricating the leaflet entirely.

"On information and belief, the brochure was manufactured by Defendants," the lawsuit read, adding that it "echoed the type of false representation" that migrants were given by word-of-mouth, such as assistance with housing, food, and employment in the first 90 days upon arrival in Massachusetts.

Brochure for Migrants
Lawyers for Civil Rights says migrants bound for Martha's Vineyard received this brochure promising cash, job placement and more.

According to the lawsuit, the brochure also took language from an existing state program, the Massachusetts Refugee Resettlement Program, which none of the migrants were eligible for.

"This brochure was not prepared by the Massachusetts Office for Refugees and Immigrants, or any other Massachusetts agency or immigration services organization," the lawsuit stated.

A representative from the state's Office for Refugees and Immigrants did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Apple made the iPhone 14 easier to repair than you expect https://briefnews.eu/apple-made-the-iphone-14-easier-to-repair-than-you-expect/ https://briefnews.eu/apple-made-the-iphone-14-easier-to-repair-than-you-expect/#respond Mon, 19 Sep 2022 17:34:27 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/apple-made-the-iphone-14-easier-to-repair-than-you-expect/ Apple acknowledged that the iPhone 14 was designed to be easier to repair, but it might have undersold that upgrade. iFixit has finished a teardown of this year's base iPhone, and it's clear that the device was reworked from the ground up with do-it-yourself fixes in mind. The back glass is easier and cheaper to fix, as promised, but used a metal midframe to keep the front just as accessible. The design is more repairable than the many Android phones that are only simple to open from the back, iFixit said.

The iPhone 14's midframe maintains the same structural rigidity you saw in the 13 family. Apple had already moved the earpiece and front camera array to a more repairable location on the previous generation's mainframe.

The iPhone 14 isn't going to make Fairphone buyers regret their purchases. Apple still requires that customers and technicians activate parts after they're installed, so you can't just use an unofficial back instead of potentially pricier Self Service Repair components. Even so, iFixit claims this is the most repairable Apple handset since 2016's iPhone 7.

The rework isn't completely surprising. Apple is facing pressure to improve repairability from both the federal government and state legislatures. If it didn't address at-home repairs with its designs, it risked battles with regulators that could force changes and dish out penalties. Whatever the reasoning, you probably won't mind if you've been waiting for an iPhone that's truly fix-friendly.

NYC Mayor Adams criticizes ‘humanitarian crisis made by human hands’ as city considers cruise ships to house migrants bussed to East Coast https://briefnews.eu/nyc-mayor-adams-criticizes-humanitarian-crisis-made-by-human-hands-as-city-considers-cruise-ships-to-house-migrants-bussed-to-east-coast/ https://briefnews.eu/nyc-mayor-adams-criticizes-humanitarian-crisis-made-by-human-hands-as-city-considers-cruise-ships-to-house-migrants-bussed-to-east-coast/#respond Sun, 18 Sep 2022 19:54:38 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/nyc-mayor-adams-criticizes-humanitarian-crisis-made-by-human-hands-as-city-considers-cruise-ships-to-house-migrants-bussed-to-east-coast/ New York City Mayor Eric Adams speaks at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Jackie Robinson Museum, Tuesday, June 26, 2022, in New York.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams speaks at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Jackie Robinson Museum, Tuesday, June 26, 2022, in New York.

  • NYC Mayor Adams decried the migrant "humanitarian crisis" that has brought over 11,000 migrants to the city.
  • Texas Gov. Abbott has bused about 2,500 migrants to NYC in a political stunt criticizing immigration laws.
  • Adams said the city may use cruise ships to house migrants as the system is "nearing its breaking point."

New York City Mayor Eric Adams criticized the bussing of migrants as a "humanitarian crisis made by human hands" as the city looks for alternate ways to house the influx of asylum seekers from the southern border.

Republican leaders like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott,  have flown and bused immigrants from the border to northern states as a political stunt. Since May, some 11,000 asylum seekers have entered New York's shelter system, including about 2,500 that were bused to the state from Texas, CNN reported.

"We should be clear that this is, as you stated, a humanitarian crisis created by human hands, and it is an all-hands-on-deck moment where we're all supposed to come together and coordinate," Adams told Jake Tapper on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday.

Adams has said the city shelter system is "nearing its breaking point" in its capacity and has begun to consider using cruise ships to house migrants.

"We're examining everything, from the legality of using any type of cruise ship for temporary housing. We're looking at everything to see how do we deal with this," Adams told CBS News last week.

On CNN on Sunday, Adams said it is an "all-hands-on-deck moment" and called on the federal government and Governors DeSantis and Abbott to "come together and coordinate."

"We should not be really treating other cities and municipalities in the manner that we're witnessing now," Adams said. "It is time for us to coordinate this humanitarian crisis that our country is facing."

Adams added that his office has tried to reach out to Gov. Abbott, but that his office has refused "to do any form of coordination."

Despite the concerns about capacity, Adams maintained "this is a right-to-shelter city, and we're going to fulfill our obligations." New York's right-to-shelter laws make it the only city in the country where asylum must be given to anyone who asks for it, per The New York Times. Last week, the Times reported that Adams suggested the system's "prior practices…must be reassessed," an idea that was swiftly dismissed by local state lawmakers.

On CNN, Adams said he is not considering changing the law.

"We're not considering and we don't believe we should change the right-to-shelter law. What needs to be looked at is the actual practices, because I'm sure, 40 years ago, when this law was put into place, no one thought that we would receive over 11,000 migrants or asylum seekers," Adams said.

Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory made its 10,000th Model Y SUV https://briefnews.eu/teslas-texas-gigafactory-made-its-10000th-model-y-suv/ https://briefnews.eu/teslas-texas-gigafactory-made-its-10000th-model-y-suv/#respond Sun, 18 Sep 2022 10:42:02 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/teslas-texas-gigafactory-made-its-10000th-model-y-suv/ Tesla has crossed another significant manufacturing milestone. As caught by Electrek, the automaker shared on Saturday that its Texas Gigafactory recently produced its ten thousandth Model Y SUV. The achievement could be good news for those hoping to buy a Cybertruck next year. Tesla plans to build the pickup truck primarily in Texas. The automaker initially expected to begin volume production in 2021 but then delayed the Cybertruck to 2022 and then 2023.

According to multiple reports, one of the reasons Tesla’s next EV hasn’t arrived yet is due to a bottleneck related to the company’s next-generation 4680 battery cells. In 2020, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the technology would lead to electric vehicles that cost less than cars with combustion engines. At that point, however, Tesla and battery partner Panasonic had yet to produce the cells at scale, and it was only this past June that they looked ready for a production surge.

That’s why the Model Y milestone is interesting. In April, Tesla began selling a new variant of the SUV that features 4680 battery cells. It can travel 279 miles on a single charge and starts at $ 59,990. On Saturday, Tesla didn’t say how many of the new Standard Range AWD variants it has produced to date. However, Electrek estimates the Texas Gigafactory is currently manufacturing more than 1,000 Model Y vehicles every week and that the plant is likely on track to begin making 2,000 units every seven days.

Logitech’s new Brio 500 webcams are made to be moved around https://briefnews.eu/logitechs-new-brio-500-webcams-are-made-to-be-moved-around/ https://briefnews.eu/logitechs-new-brio-500-webcams-are-made-to-be-moved-around/#respond Wed, 14 Sep 2022 11:16:32 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/logitechs-new-brio-500-webcams-are-made-to-be-moved-around/ Logitech has unveiled the Brio 500 series webcams designed to fix things like "unflattering camera angles, poor lighting and field-of-view limitations," it said. The Brio 500 models come with multiple fields of view from 65 to 90 degrees, auto light correction via the RightLight 4 and a magnetic mounting system that makes it easy to get the best angle for your face.

Unlike the original Brio 4K model, the cylindrical Brio 500 supports 1080p at 30 fps or 720 at 60fps, though a new 4-megapixel sensor supposedly offers improved image quality. One nice feature is the new privacy shutter, operated via a dial on the right side of the webcam. Another is the "Show Mode" designed to let others see your desk for a presentation, etc., simply by tilting the camera towards it.

It includes a pair of beamforming, noise cancelling microphones and "Right Sight" auto-framing that keeps you centered in the view. The mount has a plastic clamp with a magnetic attachment on top that mates to another magnet at the bottom of the webcam, but some testers found the bond a bit weak.

The Brio 500 is now available in black, rose and off-white starting at $ 130. Logitech also unveiled the new Zone Vibe 100 (Bluetooth) and 125 headphones (Bluetooth and USB receiver) in the same colors, starting at $ 100 for the Zone Vibe 100 black model and $ 130 for the Zone Vibe 125 in black.
