Around 3.5 million people attend the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade in New York City every year. Fifty million more tune in to watch it from home.

Before it became the national spectacle it is today, the first parade in 1924 was a relatively modest assembly of Macy’s workers, elephants, monkeys, camels, Broadway performers, and small floats.

Take a look at archive photos of Macy’s first parade.

On Thanksgiving morning in 1924, Macy’s procession launched as the Christmas Parade.

Macy’s was not the first company to have a parade like this. In 1920, Philadelphia’s Gimbel Brothers Department Store staged a Thanksgiving parade with 50 people, 15 cars, and a fireman dressed as Santa Claus.

The performers marched 6 miles, starting from the intersection of 145th Street and Convent Avenue in Upper Manhattan.

  • After a terror attack in New York City on Halloween, the NYPD took every per caution to make sure the Thanksgiving Day parade was safe.
  • This included bomb-resistant sand-fil eld trucks and police sharpshooters.

NEW YORK (AP) — Sand-filled sanitation trucks and police sharpshooters will mix with glittering floats and giant balloons at a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade that comes in a year of terrible mass shootings and not even a month after a deadly truck attack in lower Manhattan.

New York City’s mayor and police brass have repeatedly stressed that layers of security, along with hundreds of officers, will be in place for one of the nation’s biggest outdoor holiday gatherings, and that visitors should not be deterred.

“We had a couple of tough months as a nation,” Police Commissioner James O’Neill said. “We won’t ever accept such acts of hate and cowardice as inevitable in our society.”

A posting last year in an English-language magazine of the Islamic State group, which took credit for the Oct. 31 truck attack that killed eight people, mentioned the Thanksgiving parade as “an excellent target.” Authorities say there is no confirmation of a credible threat.

“I want to assure the people that we swore to protect that anytime something happens anywhere in the world, the NYPD works with our law enforcement partners and studies it and we learn from it and it informs our decision making going forward,” O’Neill said.

This year’s security plan includes dozens of city sanitation trucks, which weigh about 16 tons empty and up to twice that with sand, that will be lined up as imposing barriers to traffic at every cross street along the 2 ½-mile parade route stretching from Central Park to Macy’s flagship store on 34th Street.

In addition, officers with assault weapons and portable radiation detectors will walk among the crowds, and sharpshooters on rooftops will scan building windows and balconies for anything unusual.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday that security at the parade increases every year “because we understand we are dealing with a very challenging world.” He told crowds gathered to watch the parade’s giant balloons being inflated that “the amount of resources and personnel we put in has increased each year to make us safer.”

New York officials also are asking the tens of thousands of spectators to be alert for anything suspicious.

“There will be a cop on every block,” said NYPD Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan. “Go to that cop and say something.”

The 91st annual parade begins at 9 a.m. and will be broadcast live on NBC. Smokey Robinson, Jimmy Fallon, The Roots, Flo Rida and Wyclef Jean will be among the stars celebrating, along with performances from the casts of Broadway’s “Anastasia,” ”Dear Evan Hansen” and “SpongeBob SquarePants.”

New balloons added this year include Dr. Seuss’ Grinch, Olaf from the smash movie “Frozen,” and a puppy called Chase from Nickelodeon’s “Paw Patrol.”

Beyond the pageantry, police say they have been working on security for the parade since the moment last year’s parade ended. It’s a plan that got renewed attention after a terror attack in lower Manhattan Oct. 31, when a man in a rented truck barreled onto a crowded bike path near the World Trade Center, killing eight people.

Authorities said the 29-year-old suspect operated from a playbook put out by the Islamic State group. Sayfullo Saipov, an Uzbek immigrant, was charged with federal terrorism offenses that could qualify him for the death penalty. According to a criminal complaint, he made statements about his allegiance to the Islamic State group.

Police also are mindful of the Oct. 1 mass shooting in Las Vegas in which a high-stakes gambler and real estate investor unleashed gunfire on country music concert-goers, killing 58 and leaving hundreds injured.

The first major New York event since the bike path attack — the New York marathon, which drew tens of thousands of spectators and 50,000 runners from around the world — went off with no problems.

“We said right away New York’s response is to remain strong and resilient,” de Blasio said. “We do not back down in the face of terror threats. The city is filled with resolve.”

7 Things You Probably Didn’t Know about Driving in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade https://briefnews.eu/7-things-you-probably-didnt-know-about-driving-in-the-macys-thanksgiving-day-parade/ https://briefnews.eu/7-things-you-probably-didnt-know-about-driving-in-the-macys-thanksgiving-day-parade/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2017 08:53:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/7-things-you-probably-didnt-know-about-driving-in-the-macys-thanksgiving-day-parade/ –Come Thanksgiving morning, the kitchen windows steam up, the aroma of roasting turkey wafts through the house, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is on TV. Broadcast from 9 a.m. to noon (live on the East Coast, tape-delayed elsewhere), the parade is viewed in person by some 3.5 million spectators and televised to an estimated 50 million.--Between the balloon handlers, clowns, cheerleaders, dancers, marching bands, and celebrity performers, more than 2000 people take part in the parade. Unsurprisingly, we were most interested in the drivers, who tow the floats. We visited Macy’s Parade Studio, the parade headquarters, and here are seven things you may not have known about the spectacle.–For this year’s parade, Ram is again the official truck, which means Ram pickups will tow all 26 floats. Those floats, once they’re loaded up with performers and kids, can weigh up to eight tons. The trucks towing them will be 1500s, 2500s, and 3500s. A 3500 Laramie Longhorn Southfork Edition will tow the Gibson Guitar float, while another 3500 will be hitched to the Singing Christmas Tree float. A white 2500 Power Wagon will tow Santa’s sleigh. Additional Ram trucks and ProMaster commercial vans are behind the scenes as well, moving costumes, tool containers, and other parade needs.–Prior to 2015, which was the first year for Ram trucks, GMC pickups and SUVs did the towing. GMC’s run lasted for more than 30 years, going back to the early 1980s.–The people commanding the balloons (as many as 90 per balloon) are all Macy’s employees and friends, but the drivers at the wheel of the trucks towing the floats are members of New York City’s Theatrical Teamsters union, Local 817. They’re supposed to wear jackets and ties for parade duty.–Although the parade route begins on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, on Central Park West at 77th Street, the floats first need to get from the warehouse where they’re built and stored, in Moonachie, New Jersey, to the starting point in the city. For that trip, the floats, which can be as much as 50 feet long and two or three stories tall, have to be broken down to a maximum size of 8.5 feet wide by 12.5 feet high, so they can go through the Lincoln Tunnel.–The trip from New Jersey into Manhattan takes place around midnight on Wednesday. Because many of the floats have been partly deconstructed, there are additional trailers carrying the attendant pieces, for a total of more than 50 in all. They travel in convoy, with an escort from multiple police agencies, through the center tube of the Lincoln Tunnel (which is briefly closed to other traffic), to the staging area just north of the parade’s official starting point.–The parade route ends in front of Macy’s flagship store in Herald Square. From there, the floats proceed one more block west and then turn north onto Seventh Avenue, where they meet the auxiliary trailers (which have been sent to the end point before the parade starts). The floats are again partly broken down for the return trip to Jersey. This time, though, there’s no convoy and no police escort. As each float is ready, the drivers are sent off on their own, creeping slowly through the Lincoln Tunnel, in holiday traffic, back to New Jersey. Which brings up one final point . . .–Jolly old Saint Nick is a fixture of the Thanksgiving Day Parade, which brings him to Macy’s Herald Square for the holiday season, where he’ll listen to countless kids tell him what they want for Christmas. Towing Santa’s rig, however, is the job nobody wants. Nothing against the man in red—it’s just that his float brings up the rear, and for the drivers, that means you’re the last one to complete the route and the last to return your float to Moonachie, hours after drivers of the earliest floats are done. As one driver put it, “The guy who drives the turkey [the first float in the parade] is home in time to see the Santa Claus float on TV.”—

The blog also did a deep dive this week on the new Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s, which sees the department store giant bring balloons on the scale of its Thanksgiving Day parade to Universal Studios Florida. The balloons are accompanied by floats and suffice it to say, the concept art for them looks pretty awesome. It should be a real thrill to see massive Minions and larger-than-life Dronkeys floating down the parade route.

At Disney’s Hollywood Studios this week, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge celebrated a construction milestone as cast members gathered to sign a support beam that will top out the new land. As Disney Parks Blog notes, “beam signings are part of a longtime construction tradition at Disney parks.”

Thanks to its proximity to the real Hollywood in California, another thing that is fast-becoming a tradition at the original Disneyland is stars appearing on rides tied to upcoming movies. Johnny Depp did it in character as Jack Sparrow this year to promote Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and now Mark Hamill has done it on Star Tours: The Adventures Continue. With the release of The Last Jedi only weeks away, the actor turned up in Tomorrowland this week to surprise some lucky guests with the sight of Luke Skywalker’s face, greeting them with a “May the Force be with you” before he buckled up for a StarSpeeder ride with them.

star tours crait 2

This appearance came the same day that we explored how the future of Star Tours could be completely different, with the prequel-era ride story possibly being reconfigured to fix some of the continuity errors that have resulted from added scenes on the planets Jakku and Crait (not to mention added characters in the form of Kylo Ren and Poe Dameron).

If you missed seeing Hamill in person at Disney, never fear: you can still catch Warwick Davis, another fan-favorite Star Wars actor, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios next month. In addition, Disney has now announced which members of the Walt Disney Imagineering and Lucasfilm team will be joining Davis at the park for Star Wars Galactic Nights.

A new series of nighttime events, dubbed Disneyland After Dark, will soon be taking place in Anaheim, as well. It all starts January 18 with Throwback Nite, “a celebration of vintage Disneyland.” Disney Parks Blog has more details.

Some Star Trek fans are fluent in Klingon. Avatar fans (there must be some of you out there) have their own fictional language they can learn, courtesy of a fellow with a Ph.D. in linguistics named Paul Frommer, who has now given a 45-minute interview (in English, alas, not Na’vi) where he discusses the language’s creation. If you visit Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, you can purchase a Na’vi Translator … but hey, why rely on that device, when you can study the language yourself with an eye toward mastering it and writing poetry? Consider the following excerpt from Inside the Magic:

Frommer explained that there is now an annual Avatar meet-up where a large group of Na’vi enthusiasts all come together to celebrate the language. Members of the group are all dedicated fans from around the world who use the language on the daily. Some even correspond with Frommer via email in the language. Frommer also said that “some members of the group speak the language better than I do.” Members of the group also use the language to write poetry, movie reviews and much more.

Who knew there was such a thriving subculture of Avatar fandom? Clearly, a movie does not make a billion dollars at the box office without engendering lifestyle changes on the part of some diehard fans. Less clear is whether or not any committed parents use the phrase “oel ngati kamei” (translation: “I see you”) to play peek-a-boo with their kids.

Avatar fans, you can identify yourselves by commenting on this article exclusively in Na’vi. Let’s mine this esoteric language for all the unobtainium it’s worth! If no one comments, I’ll take your silence as confirmation that the continued existence of Avatar fans in 2017 is an Internet hoax. Remember, therefore, the rallying war cry of Jake Sully: “You fly now, with me. My brothers, sisters. And we will show the sky people [I forget the rest. But let your voices be heard.]”

REI CEO slams retailers like Macy’s and Walmart for ‘rampant consumerism’ — and says it could ultimately hurt the companies this Black Friday https://briefnews.eu/rei-ceo-slams-retailers-like-macys-and-walmart-for-rampant-consumerism-and-says-it-could-ultimately-hurt-the-companies-this-black-friday/ https://briefnews.eu/rei-ceo-slams-retailers-like-macys-and-walmart-for-rampant-consumerism-and-says-it-could-ultimately-hurt-the-companies-this-black-friday/#respond Mon, 30 Oct 2017 04:16:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rei-ceo-slams-retailers-like-macys-and-walmart-for-rampant-consumerism-and-says-it-could-ultimately-hurt-the-companies-this-black-friday/ REIREI

  • Outdoors retailer REI will not be open this Black Friday.
  • CEO Jerry Stritzke says that other retailers hurt themselves by encouraging “rampant consumerism.”
  • REI’s business has ultimately been helped by closing on one of its former busiest days of the year.

REI is staying shut on Black Friday for the third year in a row.

And, while CEO Jerry Stritzke says that originally the decision was a moral one, it’s also great for the outdoor company’s business.

“You don’t win in the long-term by pushing … what I call rampant consumerism,” Stritzke told Business Insider.

While retailers were once able to win over shoppers on deals alone, Stritzke says consumers are now “looking for something more.” Opening on Thanksgiving can hurt brands at a time when they need to build genuine connections and engagement with customers more than ever before.

“I think retail has really moved towards a tipping point,” Stritzke said.

REIREI

At REI, the “Opt Outside” Black Friday initiative is the “something more.”

Four years ago, Black Friday was one of the retailer’s biggest business days of the year. Then, in 2015, the retailer decided to close all stores and give all employees a paid day off. REI doesn’t even process any online sales on Black Friday, as part of an effort to encourage employees and customers to spend the day outdoors.

At the time, it wasn’t an easy decision — but REI was quickly vindicated.

REI uses a cooperative model, meaning customers can pay $ 20 to become lifetime members and part-owners of the company. In 2015, REI posted its largest-ever membership growth, as well as increasing revenue by 9.3% to $ 2.4 billion.

REIREI

More than 700 organizations have partnered with REI on #OptOutside over the last two years, from the National Parks department to small local businesses. And, this year, REI is launching an “experiential search engine,” featuring photos from people’s #OptOutside experiences.

“It makes it feel like a kind of movement or a consumer sentiment,” Stritzke said.

As consumer sentiment shifts, Stritzke says other retailers are being left behind. Stritzke believes it is “brand damaging” for retailers to open on Thanksgiving. Amongst major retailers, such as Walmart, Macy’s, and Kohl’s, it is now the norm to open around 5 or 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

“The whole idea of Black Friday and Cyber Monday … is becoming less relevant as the consumer is generally accustomed to great deals, or at least getting a deal,” Josh Elman, a consumer and retail analyst with Nasdaq Advisory Services, said.

Stritzke agrees. With retailers providing “instant gratification” and impressive deals all year round, it’s more strategic to connect with customers and attempt to build a relationship — and loyalty.

“It’s really more than selling stuff,” Stritzke said. “It’s not just retail. It’s experiences.”

Online holiday shopping is poised to beat in-store sales for the first time ever — and it’s terrible news for retailers like Sears and Macy’s https://briefnews.eu/online-holiday-shopping-is-poised-to-beat-in-store-sales-for-the-first-time-ever-and-its-terrible-news-for-retailers-like-sears-and-macys/ https://briefnews.eu/online-holiday-shopping-is-poised-to-beat-in-store-sales-for-the-first-time-ever-and-its-terrible-news-for-retailers-like-sears-and-macys/#respond Tue, 24 Oct 2017 04:02:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/online-holiday-shopping-is-poised-to-beat-in-store-sales-for-the-first-time-ever-and-its-terrible-news-for-retailers-like-sears-and-macys/ black fridayGunnar Rathbun/AP

  • People say they plan to spend more money online than in stores this holiday shopping season.
  • This is the first year in Deloitte’s annual survey that shoppers have predicted their online purchases will exceed what they buy in-store.
  • While some retailers are thriving with the rise of e-commerce, traditional brick-and-mortar retailers like Macy’s and Sears are struggling to keep up.

For the first year, Americans are expected to spend more money online than in stores this holiday season.

Shoppers plan to spend 51% of their holiday shopping budget online, compared to 42% in stores, according to Deloitte’s survey of more than 4,000 Americans.

This is the first year that online sales are expected to exceed in-store sales. Last year, respondents told Deloitte that they expected to spend 47% of their budget in stores and 47% online. In every year prior to 2016, expectations for in-store shopping exceeded online sales predictions.

macysKim Bhasin / Business Insider

Deloitte’s survey looks at shoppers’ entire “holiday budget.” However, similar trends are expected to play out over Black Friday weekend, the unofficial kickoff of the most important period of the year for many retailers.

According to National Retail Federation data, 99 million people said they shopped in stores on Thanksgiving weekend last year — a drop of three million from the year before. Meanwhile, 108 million people shopped online on Thanksgiving weekend in 2016 — a five million increase from the year before.

The rise of online holiday shopping is a boon for e-commerce companies like Amazon, as well as for retailers that have built out their online business, like Walmart and Target. However, for traditional brick-and-mortar retailers like Macy’s, Sears, and other department stores, the rise of e-commerce has significantly cut into sales.

The internet is the No. 1 place that customers expect to shop, with 55% of respondents saying that it is the most likely place they will shop this year in Deloitte’s survey. Meanwhile, only 28% of people said that department stores would be their top place to shop — a 4% drop from last year.

Macy’s might shut down more stores (M) https://briefnews.eu/macys-might-shut-down-more-stores-m/ https://briefnews.eu/macys-might-shut-down-more-stores-m/#respond Thu, 11 May 2017 19:06:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/macys-might-shut-down-more-stores-m/ Macy'sAP

Macy’s is in the process of shutting down 100 stores, or nearly 15% of its store base, as it battles plunging sales and traffic.

But it needs to close even more locations to revive business, according to analysts and industry experts.

The market “probably wants to see another 100 Macy’s stores close,” Jan Kniffen, CEO of consulting frim Worldwide Enterprises, told CNBC Thursday.

Cowen & Co. analyst Oliver Chen echoed that statement in a research note Thursday.

“We fear that Macy’s may need to close more stores than previously announced, and share losses vs. both off-price (TJ Maxx and Ross Stores) and Amazon will continue in the foreseeable future,” Chen wrote.

In a call with analysts on Thursday, Macy’s CEO Jeff Gennette acknowledged that Macy’s might not be done closing stores in the near term.

“I’m not going to say we’re not going to close more stores,” Gennette said. “We do have to stabilize our brick-and-mortar business… That’s where a majority of our business is still done.”

In late January, Macy’s had 673 stores in operation, down from nearly 800 in 2014. By the end of this year, the chain’s store base will drop to around 600.

Macy'sAPMacy’s is one of more than a dozen major mall-based chains including JCPenney and Sears that are closing stores this year. Overall, retailers have announced more than 3, 200 store closures since the beginning of the year, and more than a dozen have filed for bankruptcy.

Gennette said the mass closures are necessary, because the US has too many stores, but they have been negatively impacting business in the near term.

“The contraction puts more pressure on some of our mall-based stores, where we have already seen a slowdown in traffic,” Gennette said. “It will take some time to see how [consolidations, closures, and bankruptcies] will impact us.”

He said the company is keeping a close watch on “how store trends evolve” and will keep looking for opportunities where selling a Macy’s store’s real estate would be more valuable than keeping the store in business.

Macy’s is also looking at ways to shrink some of its full-line stores by renting out floors to other retailers, the company said.

Macy’s sales fell 7.5% to $ 5.3 billion in the most recent quarter, and same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, fell 5.2%.

“We don’t have our head in the sand, as for the significant challenges we face in trying to get the business growing again,” Gennette said. “These challenges are secular and not cyclical.”
