Someone impersonating administrators of cryptocurrency-related discussion channels on Slack, Discord, and other social messaging platforms has been attempting to lure others into installing macOS malware. The social-engineering campaign consists of posting a script in discussions and encouraging people to copy and paste that script into a Terminal window on their Macs. The command downloads a huge (34 megabyte) file and executes it, establishing a remote connection that acts as a backdoor for the attacker.

Patrick Wardle, a Mac malware expert, also examined the malware and dubbed it “OSX.Dummy” because, as he wrote:

  • the infection method is dumb
  • the massive size of the binary is dumb
  • the persistence mechanism is lame (and thus also dumb)
  • the capabilities are rather limited (and thus rather dumb)
  • it’s trivial to detect at every step (that dumb)
  • … and finally, the malware saves the user’s password to dumpdummy

The attack, first noted by Remco Verhoef of SANS today, downloads its awkward payload from a remote server, makes that file executable, and runs it. It looks something like this:

When Apple released macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 on March 29, fully supported external graphics-card functionality was one of the flagship features.

Most Macs ship with discrete or integrated GPUs—power-saving cousins to the graphics cards found in desktop PCs—that emphasize efficient power and heat management as much as they do performance. External graphics cards (eGPUs) allow users to connect those powerful desktop graphics cards to their computers via the Thunderbolt 3 ports on modern Macs.

That could solve many of the frustrations some users have with the Mac platform, like the lack of an upgrade path for professional-use machines that depend on graphics power and lackluster gaming performance in the latest games.

Apple may let the same app work on across iOS and Macs https://briefnews.eu/apple-may-let-the-same-app-work-on-across-ios-and-macs/ https://briefnews.eu/apple-may-let-the-same-app-work-on-across-ios-and-macs/#respond Wed, 20 Dec 2017 15:29:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apple-may-let-the-same-app-work-on-across-ios-and-macs/

The app situation between iPhones and Macs is a bit of a mess. While mobile apps are updated regularly, the Mac App Store can often leave something to be desired. Now, Apple is finally tackling this chaos. According to Bloomberg, Apple may give developers the option to create a single app that will work across Macs, iPads and iPhones as early as next year.

According to insider sources, the same app will be able to respond to a mouse, a touch pad or a touch screen, depending on the device it’s being run on. Right now, apps must be designed separately for the iPhone and iPad versus for a computer, which explains why you can occasionally find tumbleweeds rolling across the screen when you pull up the Mac App Store. If developers must choose to devote resources to one or the other, the computer apps often get shortchanged.

The change won’t come immediately, though. It’s planned as part of next fall’s iOS and Mac OS updates, according to Bloomberg‘s sources. Because this is all so tentative, it’s also possible that the decision makers at Apple could change their minds and cancel this endeavor entirely. Here’s hoping they don’t, though. This streamlining would likely be a popular move for Mac users.

“Perverse” malware infecting hundreds of Macs remained undetected for years https://briefnews.eu/perverse-malware-infecting-hundreds-of-macs-remained-undetected-for-years/ https://briefnews.eu/perverse-malware-infecting-hundreds-of-macs-remained-undetected-for-years/#respond Tue, 25 Jul 2017 01:24:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/perverse-malware-infecting-hundreds-of-macs-remained-undetected-for-years/

A mysterious piece of malware that gives attackers surreptitious control over webcams, keyboards, and other sensitive resources has been infecting Macs for at least five years. The infections—known to number nearly 400 and possibly much higher—remained undetected until recently and may have been active for almost a decade.

Patrick Wardle, a researcher with security firm Synack, said the malware is a variant of a malicious program that came to light in January after circulating for at least two years. Dubbed Fruitfly by some, both malware samples capture screenshots, keystrokes, webcam images, and information about each infected Mac. Both generations of Fruitfly also collect information about devices connected to the same network. After researchers from security firm Malwarebytes discovered the earlier Fruitfly variant infecting four Macs, Apple updated macOS to automatically detect the malware.

The variant found by Wardle, by contrast, has infected a much larger number of Macs while remaining undetected by both macOS and commercial antivirus products. After analyzing the new variant, Wardle was able to decrypt several backup domains that were hardcoded into the malware. To his surprise, the domains remained available. Within two days of registering one of the addresses, close to 400 infected Macs connected to the server, mostly from homes located in the United States. Although Wardle did nothing more than observe the IP address and user names of Macs that connected to his server, he had the ability to use the malware to spy on the users who were unwittingly infected.

iPhone holds steady while Macs and services keep Apple growing in Q2 2017 https://briefnews.eu/iphone-holds-steady-while-macs-and-services-keep-apple-growing-in-q2-2017/ https://briefnews.eu/iphone-holds-steady-while-macs-and-services-keep-apple-growing-in-q2-2017/#respond Tue, 02 May 2017 21:39:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/iphone-holds-steady-while-macs-and-services-keep-apple-growing-in-q2-2017/

Apple has just released its earnings report for the second quarter of fiscal 2017, which runs from the beginning of January to the end of March. So far, Apple is back to modest growth in 2017—iPhone unit sales are down just a little and iPad sales continue their precipitous slide, but iPhone revenue is actually up and the Mac, the Services division, and the Other Products divisions all posted solid growth.

Apple made $ 11 billion in profit and $ 52.9 billion in revenue, compared to $ 10.5 billion in profit and $ 50.6 billion in revenue in Q2 of 2016. The company’s gross margin was 38.9 percent. These results were toward the upper end of Apple’s guidance for the quarter, which predicted revenue between $ 51.5 billion and $ 53.5 billion and a profit margin between 38 and 39 percent.

The company predicts that it will make between $ 43.5 and $ 45.5 billion in the third quarter of fiscal 2017, with profit margins between 37.5 and 38.5 percent. These numbers compare favorably to the $ 42.4 billion the company made in Q3 of 2016, though they’re still well below the $ 49.6 billion that Apple made in Q3 of 2015.

New WikiLeaks dump: The CIA built Thunderbolt exploit, implants to target Macs https://briefnews.eu/new-wikileaks-dump-the-cia-built-thunderbolt-exploit-implants-to-target-macs/ https://briefnews.eu/new-wikileaks-dump-the-cia-built-thunderbolt-exploit-implants-to-target-macs/#respond Thu, 23 Mar 2017 21:06:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-wikileaks-dump-the-cia-built-thunderbolt-exploit-implants-to-target-macs/

WikiLeaks today dumped a smaller subset of documents from its “Vault 7” collection of files from a CIA software developer server. Yet again, these documents are more important from the perspective of WikiLeaks having them than for showing any revelatory content. The exploits detailed in these new files are for vulnerabilities that have largely been independently discovered and patched in the past. The files also reveal that the CIA likely built one of these tools after seeing a presentation on the exploits of Apple’s EFI boot firmware at Black Hat in 2012.

The latest batch of files, dramatically named “DarkMatter” (after one of the tools described in the dump), consists of user manuals and other documentation for exploits targeting Apple MacBooks—including malware that leveraged a vulnerability in Apple’s Thunderbolt interface uncovered by a researcher two years ago. Named “Sonic Screwdriver” after the ever-useful tool carried by the fictional Doctor of Dr. Who, the malware was stored on an ordinary Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter. It exploited the Thunderbolt interface to allow anyone with physical access to a MacBook to bypass password protection on firmware and install one of a series of Apple-specific CIA “implants.”

The first (and only documented) version of Sonic Screwdriver was released in 2012. It worked only on MacBooks built between late 2011 and mid-2012, and the tool used a vulnerability in the firmware of those computers that allowed commands to be sent via the Thunderbolt adapter to change the “boot path” (the location of the files used to boot the computer). The change would allow a local attacker to boot the targeted MacBook from an external device to install malware that eavesdropped on the computer during normal use. Those implants included “DarkMatter,” the predecessor to “QuarkMatter.” (QuarkMatter is malware that was revealed in the previous WikiLeaks dump, and it infected the EFI partition of a MacBook’s storage device.)

Report: Apple is kind-of-sort-of working on more ARM chips for its Macs https://briefnews.eu/report-apple-is-kind-of-sort-of-working-on-more-arm-chips-for-its-macs/ https://briefnews.eu/report-apple-is-kind-of-sort-of-working-on-more-arm-chips-for-its-macs/#respond Thu, 02 Feb 2017 07:24:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/report-apple-is-kind-of-sort-of-working-on-more-arm-chips-for-its-macs/

Apple is working on more ARM co-processors for future MacBooks, at least if a new report from Bloomberg is to be believed. The company is allegedly developing a chip codenamed “T310” that could be used to handle macOS’ “Power Nap” functionality and other low-power features.

The chip would sit alongside an Intel processor that would still do all the heavy lifting when the computer was awake, much like the Apple T1 chip that powers the new MacBook Pros’ Touch Bar. The T310 would be slightly more capable and more deeply integrated into the system than the T1, since it would be allowed to use the computers’ Wi-Fi adapters and access RAM and storage. But as described, the chip would still be filling a niche role rather than doing any major processing.

While Bloomberg notes that Apple has “no near-term plans to completely abandon Intel chips,” the report frames Apple’s new chip as the next step down a road toward “Intel independence.” This could eventually lead to Macs that are powered by Apple’s own A-series processors rather than standard x86 PC processors; Intel’s chip development has slowed significantly in recent years, and the company’s roadmap doesn’t look as rosy as it did back in 2006 when Apple originally switched away from the PowerPC architecture.
