Just 25 percent of the people surveyed by Odoxa and Dentsu Consulting for France Info and Le Figaro said they were happy with the way the government is running the protest-plagued country, while 75 percent disapprove of Macron and the ministers in his cabinet.
This indicates a dramatic loss of popularity for Macron compared to the 59 percent of unhappy citizens in April 2018, according to France Info. The current poll included 1,004 people across the country and was carried out in early January.
Interestingly, the least favorable opinions came not only from low-paid workers and farmers, but also the upper-middle income class.
People are equally dissatisfied with a number of key government officials, including Prime Minister Edouard Philippe and Interior Minister Christophe Castaner, with 54 and 53 percent negative ratings respectively.
Yellow Vest protesters – so called due to the distinctive high-visibility jackets they wear – launched massive rallies across the country in November of last year. At first, the rallies targeted a hike in fuel prices proposed by Macron’s government, which was later dropped in the wake of almost war-like battles between angry protesters and police.
Efforts to pacify the people failed as the Yellow Vest movement quickly snowballed into a wider protest against deteriorating living conditions and social inequality in France.
One of the protest leaders, Eric Drouet, was arrested in Paris late on Wednesday, sparking outcry among his supporters who chanted ‘Dictatorship! Dictatorship!’
The authorities earlier charged him with organizing and leading an unauthorized protest, sparking outrage among the Yellow Vests in the capital. Tweeting support for Drouet, left-wing politician Jean-Luc Melenchon called the arrest an “abuse of power” and political policing.

]]>
TV channel France3 has “fixed” a placard held by a Yellow Vest protester, which urged President Emmanuel Macron to resign. The broadcaster explained that the sign was broadcast reading just Macron, due to a “human error.”
The unfortunate blunder occurred on Saturday during an evening news program that was covering the ongoing Yellow Vest protests.
Among videos and images of the protests, France3 featured a photo supplied by Agence France Presse (AFP). It shows a couple of mounted police officers watching the crowds outside the Opera building in Paris on Saturday. One of the Yellow Vests holds high a placard, reading “Macron out.” Here’s this photo.
Everything was the same in the France3 broadcast, except for a ‘tiny’ detail – the “out” part of the slogan had mysteriously vanished from the image.
The photo-doctoring did not escape sharp-eyed watchers, who promptly accused the broadcaster of “censorship.” The replay of the program is publicly available online, and France3 acknowledged the blunder, blaming it on a “mistake.”
“There was no intent to hide the sign last night. It’s a human mistake,” the broadcaster tweeted, supplying the unmodified image. “We have identified the source. It will not happen again.”
It remains unclear how, exactly, one can doctor a picture in such fashion by “mistake.” Aside from the uproar and accusations of Orwellian-grade censorship, the blunder triggered a wave of jokes.
Some users “fixed” the picture for France3, doctoring it harder. Here’s an example – the placard now reads “Long Live Macron!”
Others suggested who might have been responsible for such an unfortunate “mistake.” Some jokingly suggested that Alexandre Benalla, the embattled former security aide to Macron, might have had his hand in it.
Benalla has been involved in several high-profile scandals. Namely, he was caught on tape getting up-close and personal with protesters earlier this year. Macron’s aide was “helping” police to beat them … while sporting borrowed police gear himself.

Paris is bracing for yet another round of Yellow Vest protests, with demonstrators taking to the streets of the capital. More than 10,000 are expected to join the march, with the slogan ‘Macron Resign’.
France is gripped by the fifth consecutive weekend of Yellow Vests rallies, named after the high-visibility clothing drivers are required to keep in their vehicles. This Saturday, demonstrations are being held with motto ‘[Emmanuel] Macron’s resignation’.
Protesters are gathering on the Champs-Élysées, which has seen four weekends of clashes between rioters and police. However, unlike the previous four protests, the number of Yellow Vest protesters is relatively low. As of this morning, at least 25 people have been detained across the Île-de-France region, police revealed.
Armored vehicles belonging to the Gendarmerie – France’s military police – have been spotted near the Arc de Triomphe, the site of the fiercest confrontations between protesters and police.

Police have flooded Paris to contain the rallies, which may turn violent. The security forces have placed around 8,000 officers on the streets of the capital to quell fears of rioting.
People initially protested fuel price hikes due to come into force this January. The government has since abandoned its plans, but the demonstrators continued, demanding more concessions, including lower taxes and a higher minimum wage.
Violence at the protests, especially in the capital, has hit record levels, with several dead and hundreds of protesters injured. Police officers have also suffered injuries. The number of those detained throughout the protests has surpassed 4,500.

It could be lonely this Christmas for Emmanuel Macron and Theresa May, with the leaders of France and Britain going into the festive season facing two very different crises: Yellow Vests and Brexit pests.
France and Britain have been bitter rivals for centuries, and now it appears they’re attempting to outdo each other once again over who can create the biggest political mess, and the competition is fierce.
The French president is dealing with the consequences of angering the people, and the British prime minister is dealing with the consequences of listening to the people.
However, as ICYMI explores, despite the differences there is one similarity that brings the two crises together.

“The Paris Agreement isn’t working out so well for Paris. Protests and riots all over France. People do not want to pay large sums of money, much to third world countries (that are questionably run), in order to maybe protect the environment. Chanting ‘We Want Trump!’ Love France,” Trump tweeted from the White House early on Saturday.

Nominally, the demonstrations began last month over a proposed environmental fuel tax, directly inspired by the Paris climate accords of 2015, under which France promised to cut its carbon emissions by 75 percent.
So, Trump’s tweet hits the mark, but also paints a reductive picture of the Yellow Vests, who are not just aggrieved right-wingers angry that the government wants to take away their petrol cars.
Right from the start, the Gilets Jaunes – who take their name from the high-visibility jackets that drivers must wear if they step outside the car on the roadside – were a symptom of a wider resistance to the presidency of Emmanuel Macron. As the president himself, a former banker who served in a center-left government, has steered a slippery course, so have his opponents come from the entire political spectrum, coalescing around an issue to create the biggest pushback since he was elected in May last year.
As with many modern street movements, there is no leader or single clear aim. But documents produced by the groups involved have demanded both a lowering of France’s onerous taxes, and a safeguarding of its famed social protections. Within days, many were simply calling for Macron to resign.
Not that they necessarily want Trump to take over. The president’s proclamation that his name was ringing out from Bordeaux to Strasbourg appears to be based on a single, old, mistitled video that was actually filmed at a rally in June in support of British nationalist Tommy Robinson but spread as a meme on conservative Twitter over the past few days.

Actual footage from France is far less euphoric – with hundreds of arrests across the country, where police say 31,000 people are out on the streets (organizers claim much higher numbers). Most of the disturbances have been in Paris, where tear gas and water cannon were unleashed to disperse what French authorities are saying are armed, professional provocateurs, who traveled from across the continent.
As the day of news wrapped up Trump sent another message calling it a “very sad day & night in Paris” and proposing one more time to abolish the “ridiculous and extremely expensive” Paris agreement.
Very sad day & night in Paris. Maybe it’s time to end the ridiculous and extremely expensive Paris Agreement and return money back to the people in the form of lower taxes? The U.S. was way ahead of the curve on that and the only major country where emissions went down last year!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 8, 2018
Earlier in the day, Trump also returned to one his cherished subjects, with yet another reminder of France’s unwillingness to contribute sufficiently to NATO, spiced up by a dig at the country’s military prowess.
“The idea of a European Military didn’t work out too well in W.W. I or 2. But the U.S. was there for you, and always will be. All we ask is that you pay your fair share of NATO. Germany is paying 1% while the U.S. pays 4.3% of a much larger GDP – to protect Europe. Fairness!” wrote the US president.

Since his election in 2016, Trump has cultivated a fractious relationship with most Western leaders, regularly clashing with them over the role of supranational bodies such as the WTO, or the International Criminal Court, and issues like trade, emissions and immigration.

Defense Minister Mario Kunasek’s office told Kurier newspaper that while Austria has no details on the army proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, it would still walk away from it because it is “contrary to the Austrian constitutional position” since Austria is neutral.
The idea of a unified European army was proposed by Macron earlier this month, with the French president insisting it is necessary in order to protect the continent from the likes of China, Russia, and “even the United States of America.”
Merkel was quick to put her support behind the proposal, saying that such an army would show the world that “there will never again be war between European nations.”
But US President Donald Trump isn’t so sure about that. He lashed out at the notion after Macron first mentioned it, reminding him that France’s enemy in both World Wars wasn’t the US, China, or Russia – it was Germany.
“They were starting to learn German in Paris before the US came along,” Trump tweeted.
Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the U.S., China and Russia. But it was Germany in World Wars One & Two – How did that work out for France? They were starting to learn German in Paris before the U.S. came along. Pay for NATO or not!

Despite the feelings of France, Germany, Austria, or any other EU member states, a European army won’t actually happen, international affairs specialist John Laughland told RT earlier this week.
“The idea of the European army is a complete fiction; there’s never been a European army and there cannot be a European army,” he said, noting that the EU cannot be legally independent from NATO unless it changes its treaties.

However, the European Commission seems to think it’s perfectly possible. A spokesman said the Commission is “delighted” by Macron and Merkel’s backing of the idea. That should perhaps come as no surprise, as Juncker himself put his support behind a European army four years ago.
“We have many times explained how we see these things. This is the Commission that wants Europe to have a meaningful defense identity,” the spokesperson said.

Macron, who was speaking to reporters on the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, said that respect was due between the US and France, two long-time allies, recalling that France was at America’s side during its fight for independence — something which many on Twitter also tried to remind Trump after he mocked French losses during both world wars.
“At every moment of our history, we were allies, so between allies, respect is due,” Macron said. Asked about Trump’s tweets, the French president said: “I think he’s playing politics, and I let him play politics.”
Macron also said that being an American ally does not mean being a “vassal” state. “The United States are our historic ally and will continue to be. It’s the ally with which we take all the risks, with which we carry out the most complicated operations. But being an ally doesn’t mean being a vassal state,” he said.
Macron’s comments stand in contrast to an earlier statement on Wednesday from a French government spokesperson who complained that Trump should have shown “common decency” toward France, given that his tweets came on the third anniversary of deadly terror attacks in Paris.
Trump posted five tweets on Tuesday in which he mocked French losses during the two world wars and said the French president had “a very low approval rating in France.”

French public is angry with Emmanuel Macron after the cheerful President posed for photos with young men at Saint Martin, one of whom showed the middle finger to the cameras.
The controversial pictures were made during Macron’s visit to the Caribbean island, devastated after hurricane Irma last year.
The French leader was followed by a host of photographers as he walked for five hours, despite sporadic rain, entered homes and talked to the locals about their life and rebuilding after the tragedy.
The reconstruction seems far from over at Saint Martin, with many houses remaining half-built or in need of repairs.
Macron’s PR-stunt went wrong when he came across two bare-chested young men, who had bandannas on their heads. One of them told to the French leader that he was a “robber” and was recently released from prison.
The president wasn’t at all perplexed by such confession as he told the guy that he should leave his criminal past behind and take part in reconstruction.
He then on went hugging the men and posing for photos with them as one showed a middle finger.
The opposition in France was quick to repost the photo and used the embarrassing moment as chance to grill Macron.
On ne trouve même plus de mots pour exprimer notre indignation.
La France ne mérite certainement pas cela. C’est impardonnable ! MLP pic.twitter.com/Lvf2k8cO8S— Marine Le Pen (@MLP_officiel) September 30, 2018
Many on twitter lamented that Macron is embarrassing the country, adding to the disastrous Benalla affair a “finger affair.”
— hadreb (@hadreb) September 30, 2018
Others noted that people in the region devastated by the hurricane expect help rather than selfie opportunities.
— Julien Sanchez (@jsanchez_rn) September 30, 2018
The French president later defended his actions by saying that his goal was to help all of the Saint Martin youth. “I love every child of the Republic, no matter how stupid he is,” he explained.
Irma became the most devastating hurricane to hit Saint Martin in over a century, with the damage to the French side of the island estimated at over $ 1.4 billion by Paris.
Homes were destroyed, cars tossed around, with the island’s deep sea port and airport also heavily hit. The port is now only operating at less than half of its capacity, which also hampers the reconstruction, while the airport is expected to fully restore its operations next year.
Saint Martin’s main income provider, the tourism industry, also suffered a major blow, with only 800 rooms out of the 1600 available earlier being ready to host guests in December when the season starts.

The UN General Assembly is a place where world leaders tend to keep things refined and play it cool, but there are always some entertaining exceptions – and this year, French President Emmanuel Macron was happy to do the honors.
Banging his fist passionately on the rostrum, Macron warned that “nationalism always leads to defeat” in what was immediately understood to be a thinly veiled rebuke of US President Donald Trump, who had spoken shortly before him.
The speeches from the two leaders were quite literally worlds apart. Macron sounded the alarm about multilateralism and dialogue falling apart, which he said would lead “directly to isolation and conflict” to the detriment of everyone, “even in the end, those who thought they were strongest.” Meanwhile, Trump rejected a globalist ideology and promised never to surrender US sovereignty to an “unelected, unaccountable global bureaucracy.”
It was the battle of the globalists v the nationalists – but was the French leader’s display enough to outdo one of the most notorious UN meltdowns?

In 1960, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev gave an equally fiery speech from the UN podium about the dangers of global imperialism. Listening back to Khrushchev’s speech in a modern context, it still sounds remarkably up to date.
Waving his arms around dramatically, the Soviet leader railed against the West and warned that the US was the “the most imperialistic power, which supports colonial regimes” and that “all the sparrows [were] tweeting about it.” He said that the US had made violations of international law a “principle of deliberate state policy.”
Khrushchev’s speech turned out to be a little fierier in the media than in reality, however. A tale about Khrushchev taking off his shoe and banging it on the podium has become legend – but the absence of any video footage of it turns the incident into mere fake news.
In an interview with RT in 2011, Khrushchev’s son, Dr Sergei Khrushchev, said the fact that the incident had become legendary “showed the power of the media” and the fact that propaganda is so powerful that “you can believe in many things that never happened.”

Brigitte Macron, well-known for her fashionable look, has embraced the beginning of autumn in perfect sartorial style.
Pictured on an afternoon out today with her husband and President of France, Emmanuel Macron, the First Lady wore a stunning pink coat.
The immaculate coat boasted a broad collar, trim pockets and fell above the knee.
Stylish Brigitte teamed the colourful garment with more neutral tones, which really helped the pink item stand out.
She donned black trousers and black boots as well as a high-necked collarless white shirt.
Brigitte accessorised with chunky rings and bracelets but did not carry a bag with her for the occasion.
Her blond hair fell in elegant waves around her shoulders as she and Macron were snapped affectionally holding hands.
The President wore a smart navy suit and navy tie, which served to perfectly set off Brigitte’s colourful wardrobe choice.
The couple were photographed at the Villa Viardot as part of the French Heritage Days in Bougival, near Paris.
The 19th-century property is set to become part of a 15 million euro restoration plan to make it a centre dedicated to romantic music for 2022, reported French news site, Le Point.
Fittingly, the Macrons met with lyric singer Jorge Chamine during the visit as well as French TV host Stephane Bern and French Culture Minister Francoise Nyssen.
Brigitte was the only one of the group to choose such a bold block-colour coat.
Earlier this week, the First Lady stunned when she showed off her legs in an above-the-knee dress.
Showing off her age-defying figure, the 65-year-old wore a stunning, Japanese-style mini dress as she accompanied her husband at the Palace of Versailles.
The French power couple were hosting Japan’s Crown Prince Naruhito for lavish dinner at the opulent palace on the outskirts of Paris.
Showing off her slender legs, which were covered in nude tights, the dress came to just above Brigitte’s knees.
Oriental in style, the dress was a pale purple hue and was emblazoned with floral detailing.
Clinging to Brigitte’s figure, the dress featured slimming panelling down the middle, a high neck and long sleeves.
The French First Lady matched the purple dress with a purple bracelet, adding a touch more colour to the quirky attire.
On her feet, Brigitte elongated her legs in a pair of shiny, silver pointed- toe stilettos, showing off her more edgy side.
Greeting the Japanese Prince in the opulent halls of Versailles, she carried with her a small silver clutch bag, matching her shiny shoes.
