Authorities in Michigan are investigating how a device used by voters ended up for sale on eBay.

An election machine security expert in Connecticut spotted the voter assist terminal on the online marketplace and purchased it for $ 1,200 before alerting Michigan authorities, CNN reported.

"We are actively working with law enforcement to investigate allegations of an illegal attempt to sell a voter assist terminal acquired in Michigan," said Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in a statement on Thursday.

Benson clarified that voter assist terminals are "not used to tabulate ballots, but are typically used by voters with disabilities who need assistance marking their ballot privately at polling places."

In an interview with CNN, Ohio resident Ean Hutchison claims he purchased the device online at Goodwill for $ 7.99 before auctioning it on eBay.

"I wasn't even aware that they were supposed to be sold, let alone donated to Goodwill," he told the outlet.

Voting machines were central to former president Donald Trump's arguments falsely claiming he beat President Biden in the 2020 election. In Michigan, Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel has accused her rival, Trump-backed Republican Matthew DePerno, of engaging in a conspiracy to gain access to voting machines used in the 2020 presidential election. 

"Our elections are and remain safe and secure," Benson in a tweet on Thursday. "We take seriously all violations of election law and will be working with authorities to ensure there are consequences for those who break the law."

Goodwill and eBay did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Houston had a problem.

In 2016, Houston’s petrochemical industry had countless job positions that were unfilled. And at the same time, a number of the city’s residents were looking for work. So, how was Houston going to fix this? In an effort to help match eligible candidates with open positions, private companies began to step in. And as a large player in the Houston employment market, JPMorgan Chase felt they could help bridge the employment gap.

As part of JPMorgan Chase’s New Skills at Work program — a $ 250 million global initiative to help support demand-driven skills training for adults — an online portal called PetrochemWorks was created in 2016. Through this portal, job seekers can input their unique skills and goals and receive personalized recommendations for relevant job vacancies and skilled-based training courses. And thanks to this portal, as well as additional job-matching initiatives, Houston’s petrochemical industry degree programs are now at capacity. Given that over 90% of local community college faculty, staff and advisors expressed an interest in continuing to use the PetrochemWorks portal as a tool to help job seekers choose careers, Houston’s petrochemical industry is certainly on its way to becoming adequately staffed.

In fact, this online portal was so successful that just one year later, it was also implemented for a similar employment gap in the banking industry in New York City.

Workers are essentially plugging in their skills and also outlining the work they would like to be doing.

Beyond career-matching websites, recruitment processes have also become more advanced over the past few years. For instance, artificial intelligence (A.I.) and machine learning are becoming increasingly popular, as both offer the opportunity to eliminate tedious matchmaking and enable employers to find the most qualified candidates quickly.

But despite these advancements, one key question remains: While technology may help a candidate find a suitable job in his or her field, can it also help an individual find a job that truly reflects their passions and values?

Sarah Steinberg, workplace expert and vice president in global philanthropy at JPMorgan Chase, certainly believes so. She references a recent study done by the Yale School of Management, which found that employees who were able to tailor their jobs to reflect their unique skill sets were far more likely to be satisfied with their work. And this is exactly what these new job-matching platforms aim to do, Steinberg says. “Workers are essentially plugging in their skills and also outlining the work they would like to be doing.”

A few years ago, JPMorgan Chase released a report called ”Swiping Right for the Job,” which explores different types of matching technologies being used in today’s job market. While the report touches on things like A.I. and machine learning, it also highlights another key aspect of the recruitment process: how both job seekers and employers are interacting with these new technologies.

The possibilities for these job-matching technologies are twofold. Candidates are able to find jobs that they see more purpose and meaning in, based on their individual passions, and employers are able to better understand what matters to a candidate and then tailor job descriptions accordingly. “Employers used to default to a bachelor’s degree as a proxy for a whole set of skills, like communication and problem-solving,” says Steinberg. “But now, having candidates tag specific skill sets, and then demonstrating these skill sets in their day-to-day jobs, has the potential to reduce some of that bias employers had towards non-traditional applicants.”

Looking back, Steinberg remembers when she used to scour the local newspaper looking for jobs, going door-to-door filling out paper applications at retail stores and restaurants. “Those days are long gone,” she says. “[The economy] is not going back to that model.” And for good reason. As we say goodbye to paper applications and hello to a new wave of labor market technologies, we also welcome a new model where all candidates have the opportunity to find work that reflects their true passions and interests.

In what could be the most literal case of money laundering yet, Amsterdam police have found €350,000 ($ 400,000) stuffed inside a washing machine in a vacant house.

Police were searching a vacant house in Amsterdam Nieuw-West when they found a washing machine packed with a very unusual load of mixed colors, in the form of bundles of blue €20 and orange €50 notes.

It isn’t certain that the money is being laundered, but its hiding place suggests it’s dirty money.

Authorities also found a money-counting machine, a gun and several mobile phones at the house, which further suggest a cycle of crime had come out in the wash.

A 24-year-old man who was at the premises at the time found himself hung out to dry when he was arrested on suspicion of money laundering, presumably after he failed to put a positive spin on why the money was hidden.

The infamous Enigma machine used by the German military in World War II, and finally cracked by Britain’s Alan Turing, has been taken apart by scientists using X-ray Computed Tomography (CT).

The tech brings us inside the machine, showing its wiring and the structure of the rotors that encrypted top secret messages in the 1940s, until mathematician and computer scientist Turing cracked the code along with his team at England’s Bletchley Park – now a WWII code-breaking museum.

Scientists at the University of Manchester, and the Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials, took more than 1500 separate X-ray radiographs, which were then reconstructed to create a virtual 3D replica of the iconic machine.

Using CT to delve into the machine has meant a unique view of the inner works of the intricate device, without causing it any damage.

Made in Berlin in 1941, this device is the latest Enigma machine to be verified and is one of only 274 registered.
