With gaming revenues six times that of the Las Vegas Strip, it's not hard to see why Macau is often called the "Las Vegas of Asia." The tiny island in the South China Sea known for its glitzy casinos and shopping malls. Macau's GDP in 2019 stood at $ 55.19 billion, of which $ 36 billion came from gaming revenues. The GDP starkly dropped to $ 29.91 billion in 2021, Trading Economics data shows.

Its future as a gambling den, however, hangs in the balance, as bidding to extend gaming concessions — the licenses to operate casinos — for casino operators ends today, September 14, at 5:45 p.m local time. 

On June 26, the gaming licenses expired for Macau's six major casino operators: Galaxy Entertainment, Melco Resorts & Entertainment, MGM China, Sands China, SJM Resorts, and Wynn Macau. Collectively, these six operators manage each of Macau's 41 casinos. They were granted a short extension until December 31 to accommodate the bidding process, according to a June 23 report from Inside Asian Gaming, or IAG. Without a gaming concession, these venues will not be allowed to operate in Macau.

On September 13, one day before the application deadline, Wynn Resorts announced it had requested a 10-year gaming concession contract from the Macau government. If approved, the license will start on January 1, 2023. Wynn was the first casino to publicly announce its application.

DS Kim, a research analyst for JPMorgan, wrote in a note on September 13 that the participation of all six incumbents is a "given" as the licensing extension draws to a close. Kim added that the government is likely to announce the six winners by the end of the year. 

The extension of the operating license to December cost each casino Macanese pataca (MOP) 47 million, or $ 5.7 million, per the IAG report. This expense is a drop in the water for the casinos, but it comes at a time when casinos have bled red for months. Revenues have come under pressure from China's stringent zero-Covid policy, which has drastically reduced visitors from mainland China, and a shift in Chinese regulatory policy, which is now cracking down on corruption.

In July, Macau's gaming revenues — called gross gaming revenue, or GGR — sank to new lows at MOP $ 398 million, according to data from Macau's Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau. That's down 95.3% on-year and down 83.9% on-month. 

"The sharp decline in Macau gross gaming revenue (GGR) alongside a new requirement for casino operators to pay gaming taxes based on a minimum annual target GGR has had and will have a negative impact on their profitability," Leon Leong, a senior analyst at Reorg, told Insider. Reorg provides intelligence on financially distressed companies.

However, the hits just keep on coming. 

In 2002, gaming licenses were granted to the casinos for a 20-year period, but the new licensing duration has been slashed to 10 years. Because of the shorter license, "casinos may be relatively reluctant to invest more as there is greater long term uncertainty," Leong said. That's especially in the context of greater US-China geopolitical tension: Most of the concessionaires' parent companies are US based.

Macau's history as a gaming hub goes back three centuries, when Macau first opened its harbor to visitors. Macau's Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau now considers gaming a "pillar" industry of the island's economy.

While gaming concessions were once monopolized by Stanley Ho — the late "King of Macau" — and his family, the monopoly was broken in 2002 when five more operators entered the gaming arena. The industry's future now hangs in the balance.

The Macau Grand Prix takes place on a notoriously difficult street circuit that claims numerous cars, drivers, and riders every single year. The 2017 event is no different, with a 12-car pileup claiming half the field on the first lap of GT car qualifying. Daniel Juncadella, at the front of the pack, hit a barrier and spun in such a way that the rest of the field behind him bunched up in a chain reaction of collisions that red-flagged the session. Eight cars restarted the qualifying session.

During the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix, which takes place on the same weekend, disaster struck as 31-year-old Daniel Hegarty crashed at high speed into a barrier. Hegarty was pronounced dead in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Glenn Irwin was named the winner of the GP after the race was canceled on the sixth lap.

“The win is all irrelevant now and I wouldn’t have won the race had it gone the distance,” said Irwin.
“It’s a tragic end to the day. That’s road racing and it’s tough.”

The last rider to die during the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix was Luis Carreira in 2012.

Hong Kong (AFP) – The death toll from Severe Typhoon Hato rose to at least 12 Thursday after the storm left a trail of destruction across southern China and battered Hong Kong skyscrapers.

Eight died in the worst-hit gambling hub of Macau, where local media showed cars underwater and people swimming along what are normally streets. The enclave’s famed mega-casinos were running on backup generators.

One man was killed after being injured by a wall that blew down, another fell from a fourth floor terrace and another was a Chinese tourist hit by a truck.

The Macau government said a male body was found in a carpark early Thursday, but details on the other victims there were not immediately available.

The enclave’s sprawling Venetian casino resort was on back-up power Wednesday and without air conditioning or proper lighting, according to one source, while residents took to social media to complain about city-wide power and mobile phone network outages.

Firefighters in Macau have been carrying out rescue work, while a cleanup operation is underway.

In Hong Kong, Hato had raised the most severe Typhoon 10 warning, only the third time a storm of this power has pounded the financial hub in the past 20 years.

More than 120 were injured as the territory was lashed with hurricane winds and pounding rain, with police adding that one 83-year-old man earlier thought to be a victim had actually committed suicide during the typhoon.

In the neighbouring southern Chinese province of Guangdong, at least four people died and 26,817 were evacuated to temporary shelters, the official Xinhua news agency said. Nearly two million households were briefly without power.

Hong Kong and the surrounding region is regularly besieged by typhoons between July and October.

The city saw its strongest storm in 1962 when the eye of Typhoon Wanda passed over and gusts of 284 kilometres per hour were recorded.

It killed 130 and left 72,000 people homeless in Hong Kong alone.

Typhoon Hato killed five people and left a wave of destruction in Macau and Hong Kong on Wednesday.

A man died in Macau when he was swept into a wall, while another man was hit by a truck and another fell from the 11th floor in Macau, the Macau Daily Times reports.

A man and a woman died after water flooded an underground car park in Macau, the South China Morning Post reports.

More than 150 people were treated for injuries in Macau hospitals, the South China Morning Post reported. Two people have been reported missing. No deaths have been reported in Hong Kong.

The level 10 warning typhoon Hato headed towards Hong Kong Wednesday morning, coming within 37 miles of land before heading west towards China, where it lost some of its strength. Schools, businesses and the stock market were forced to close in Hong Kong, and flights were canceled.

The typhoon caused severe flooding in the streets of Macau. The gambling hub was forced to rely on backup generators to power its casinos. People were evacuated from the Chinese cost before the storm arrived, while boats were brought back to harbour.
