It’s very easy to have preconceptions about a vehicle like the Porsche Macan GTS. Some people will be predisposed not to like it because it’s a Porsche. Other people, people who like the marque, may look down on it because they think it’s isn’t a real Porsche. And I’ll admit, I had my own preconceptions, since I am not generally a fan of the small SUV or crossover. So imagine my surprise when, after a week, I was forced to concede that the Macan GTS deserves to be taken seriously. It’s definitely a real Porsche. And in fact, it might be the best SUV I’ve ever driven.

Yes, SUVs can be real Porsches

First off, let’s dispense with the idea that SUVs are something outside of Porsche’s comfort zone. The first Cayennes started rolling off the production line in Bratislava in 2002, and that model is now in its third generation. What’s more, it almost certainly saved the company in the process, subsidizing the sports cars that we normally think of when we think about Porsche.

The Macan joined the lineup in 2013, arriving on these shores in 2014. And it has been quite the sales success, with Macans making up almost a third of the 246,000 Porsches delivered worldwide in 2017. The SUV-obsessed US is an even more important market for the Macan. Last year was a record year for Porsche North America, and the Macan accounted for just under 39 percent of the vehicles it delivered. When we drove the Macan at launch, it was offered in a couple of flavors—the 340hp Macan S and 400hp Macan Turbo. Since then, Porsche has added a base model (252hp, starting at $ 47,800) and the $ 68,900, 360hp Macan GTS.

Porsche continues testing an updated version of the Macancrossover SUV, and as such, our spy photographers are getting more opportunities to capture it in photos. The latest photos include one that reveals how Porsche’s entry-level crossover changes on the inside. Though not radically different, there are some interesting updates.

Most notable is the inclusion of a much larger infotainment display. It’s both taller and wider, so much so that it has displaced the air vents that, on the current model, appeared on either side. Those vents have morphed into slim, horizontal units, rather than vertical, and sit at the base of the center stack. The physical controls below the screen have also been adjusted ever so slightly, showing just one row of buttons, now. The center console looks pretty much unchanged, as does the rest of the dashboard.

There isn’t much new to report on the outside. The prototype still shows reworked lights and grilles that help the new Macan look more like the latest Cayenne. The possible full-width taillights are still very well hidden, so we can’t confirm their existence yet. Aside from those lights, we’re also expecting Porsche to replace the twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine in the Macan S for a single-turbo version, while a turbo 2.9-liter V6 will appear in the Macan Turbo. The crossover will likely make its full debut this year.

Porsche has ceased producing its vehicles with diesel engines in all global markets.

The news comes comes courtesy of the U.K. publication Autocar, which reported the brand has stopped production of its diesel-equipped Macan compact crossover. The Porsche Panamera and the Porsche Cayenne already had ditched their diesel engine options.

Porsche Macan S diesel (Euro-spec)

Porsche’s decision to pull the plug on diesel follows in the wake of the Volkswagen diesel-emissions scandal, which resulted in the recall or buyback of more than half a million U.S. vehicles following the revelation that the automaker equipped its diesel-powered vehicles with an emissions-cheating device that violated the Clean Air Act. Porsche is one of eight automotive brands owned by the Volkswagen Group, and its Cayenne diesel was part of the recall; Porsche has not offered a diesel-powered model in the United States since.

Porsche did continue to sell diesels elsewhere, and the brand officially linked the powertrain’s demise to declining sales overseas. Instead, Porsche plans to focus on its gasoline and gasoline-electric hybrid powertrains, where demand continues to increase. Additionally, the forthcoming Mission E electric car promises to combine more than 300 miles of driving range with Porsche’s legendary performance.

Subtlety, thy name is Porsche. Looking over the spy shots above, it’s not immediately apparent that this Macan, spotted testing in the dead of winter’s snow, is new. Look a bit more closely and you’ll see new lighting elements front and rear, though still obfuscated a bit by some camouflage.

The next Macan gets headlights boasting new LED lighting designs, and the lower indicators are repositioned beside reshaped grille openings. At the rear, though it’s hard to tell with all the snow blown around, we’re expecting the next Macan to get a horizontal light bar connecting the two taillights. That will keep this refreshed Macan looking more like the Cayenne and Panamera that it shares showroom space with.

We’d be surprised if the next Macan doesn’t adopt the capacitive button and 12.3-inch touchscreen arrangement seen inside the latest Cayenne and Panamera, along with the dual 7-inch LCD screens housed in the gauge cluster. That major update may explain why Porsche has been testing this refreshed Macan so long — we saw spy shots of a mostly complete-looking model back in May 2017.

The biggest changes to the next Macan will almost surely be under the hood. A new 3.0-liter V6 engine with a single turbocharger is likely to replace the current 3.0-liter V6 in the Macan S. Expect a version of Porsche’s 2.9-liter turbocharged V6 to show up in the Macan Turbo with more power and torque than the outgoing 3.6-liter unit. Hybrid and fully electric models are likely to come at a later date.

Expect a full unveiling sometime this year. We’re sure it’ll be great to drive, and we look forward to seeing if it’s still one of our favorite vehicles next year, like it was in 2017.

Even if it didn’t hail from Stuttgart and claim the 911 sports car as next of kin, we would still call the unapologetically sporty Macan Turbo the Porsche of compact luxury crossovers. It’s that over the top and that great to drive. Representing the highest rung on the Macan ladder—with the Macan, Macan S, and GTS, which are reviewed separately, on lower rungs—the Turbo boasts a larger-displacement twin-turbocharged V-6 engine with 400 horsepower and an eye-watering base price. And that’s just the beginning. Porsche also offers a 440-hp version for those who like to spend (even more) money but also find themselves in one big damn hurry. Both versions largely abdicate their responsibilities as crossovers, prioritizing speed and fun over practical concerns such as passenger space and cargo hauling. If you haven’t driven one, you could be forgiven for thinking that the Porsche Macan is not to be taken seriously. It looks like the result of a 911 and a Cayenne that were fused together in a teleportation accident, it’s frequently spotted emerging from underground parking structures in Tribeca, and, you know, it’s a four-door hatchback Porsche. But a few minutes behind the wheel of a Macan will reveal a compact crossover that holds true to almost everything we love about Stuttgart’s best exports. The Macan is quick, agile, and rewarding to drive. It feels athletic when pushed hard, but it’s also comfortable around town. The steering, brakes, powertrain, and chassis all respond to inputs from the driver in near perfect harmony. Sure, it’s not as immersive a driving experience as in Porsche’s classic sports cars. But it’s surprisingly close. And, yes, it puts the “compact” in compact crossover—don’t think you’re going to fit two kids and a dog in the back seat—but the Macan is still more than we ever dared to hope for from Porsche’s foray into suburban environs.
