The nascent automotive startup Lynk & Co wants to be seen as a global company. The spawn of Chinese automaker Geely, it hopes to disrupt the industry through connectivity and alternative ownership formats. Geely also owns the Swedish brand Volvo, which will share parts and platforms with Lynk & Co, with hopes to sell cars eventually in the United States and throughout Europe. The new brand has endured skepticism and naming battles, but its plan has taken one step closer to reality as Lynk & Co unveils its third model, the 02 SUV, and maps out details for its rollout in Europe.

The 02 SUV joins the 01 compact CUV—which we’ve driven—and the 03 sedan. Lynk & Co did not release much information, although it did release plenty of photos that shows every part of the vehicle. It features similar styling to the other two models, with a frumpy face and Nissan Juke–like high-mounted headlights, a floating roof, plastic cladding around the wheel arches, a light bar that stretches across the rear, and dual exhaust tips within a rear diffuser. The body is slightly more swoopy than that of the 01, however, with extra creases across the doors and shoulders. Lynk & Co said it plans to begin with “hybrid-only electrified derivatives” for its first vehicles, including the 02.

Lynk & Co 02 SUV

Following the launch of the brand in China in 2017, Lynk & Co said it will begin production of the 01 CUV at Volvo’s Ghent, Belgium, factory in 2019. The 01 will be made on the same line as the Volvo XC40 and will share Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform. The first “offline store”—not a dealership—will open in Amsterdam, with plans for other boutiques in Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, and London. Pop-up stores are also a possibility.

Although Lynk’s cars might borrow from other brands, the company’s business model represents an attempt to map out new territory. Unlike other manufacturers, which allow customers to take a base car and build it into their ideal ride through various options and packages, Lynk & Co will only offer “collections.” These collections will be equipped in one way and have one price. The cars can be browsed at one of the boutiques and ordered online, with the choice to buy or subscribe. The models will also have a built-in option to share, similar to the way the popular app Turo allows owners to rent out their cars. We are promised more details on the brand’s U.S. plans later in the year.

Lynk & Co has just revealed a new model, the 02. Confusingly, it’s the third model from the Chinese brand under the Geely umbrella with Volvo. Its second model was the 03 sedan. The company hasn’t revealed many details about the vehicle itself, but it’s obviously a small hatchback with crossover leanings.

The 02 will also be built at Volvo’s production facility in Belgium. We assume it uses Volvo’s compact modular architecture and Volvo powertrains. The company says it will only be offering cars with electrified powertrains in Europe, but hybrids are also possible in certain markets.

Lynk’s baby CUV has large, chunky plastic fender flares and a relatively tall stance. The headlight treatment is what you’d expect from Lynk & Co. It has split headlights with the upper lamps sitting practically on top of the fenders. It also has the odd rectangular grille across the front. One nifty detail are wheels with angular, almost random triangular designs and interesting use of accent colors.

Lynk & Co also revealed its plans for sales in Europe. The company is already selling cars in China, and its first location for European sales will be Amsterdam. The next locations are Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels and London. The company calls its dealers “Offline Stores.” Instead of outright purchasing, the company is developing subscription and car-sharing sales models.

And in one final oddball bit of news, it seems Lynk & Co is creating a fashion line with a company called Tictail to go along with the car line.

What It Is: A near-production version of the Lynk & Co 03 concept, first previewed last April by the newly created Geely subsidiary with the Lincoln-baiting name. Some of the concept’s exterior elements have been modified for production, such as the larger side-view mirrors and the rear bumper with its low-mounted reflectors. Dual exhaust tips poke out below the bumper, which now incorporates a wide strip that appears to house the reverse lamps. The 03’s front is positively amphibian, the side profile is stubby and ungainly, and the back is as bland as envelope adhesive. Clearly, Lynk & Co is not going to impinge on fellow Geely brand Volvo’s position as a design leader. It’s been awhile since we’ve heard much about Chinese automaker Lynk & Co. The company revealed its production 01 crossover at the end of 2016, along with its plans to eventually come to Europe and the U.S. with a unique car-sharing model. This was followed by a concept sedan that we thought might preview a 02 model, along with another sedan called 03. But things have been quiet until now, when a hatchback prototype was spotted by one of our spy photographers, which we’re tentatively calling 04.

It’s definitely a Lynk & Co car based on the headlights. They have the distinct and somewhat frog-like design of the 01 crossover, consisting of a bulbous upper lamp sitting atop the front fenders, and another lamp lower in the fascia, probably connected to the grille. We can make out taillights that also match the 01’s design, mostly horizontal before taking a 90-degree turn downward at the edges of the tail.

We also expect that, like the current 01, this 04 will surely be based on Volvo architecture, specifically the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). This platform also underpins the Volvo XC40 and upcoming S40. This also means Volvo powertrains will probably be used. As for when we might see any Lynk & Co vehicles in America, the soonest will likely be 2019. The company announced last year it was planning to make its first appearance in the American market in 2019 in San Francisco.

“Lincoln.” “Lynk & Co.” Say them out loud, and there is a similarity there that’s sort of harmonic. At least, there’s enough to bother Ford, according to a report in Automotive News, which said that Lincoln plans to take legal action with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to block use of the Lynk & Co name in the United States.

The report quoted an unnamed Lincoln spokesperson as saying, “Their name as it stands will confuse customers.” Lynk & Co, a startup owned by China’s Geely, so far has shown two concepts, the 01 crossover and the 03 sedan (pictured at top of page). The company says it plans to enter the U.S. market next year; that it will sell cars direct to consumers, without using dealerships; that the cars will have a built-in feature to facilitate peer-to-peer rental in the manner of Airbnb; and that it will offer a “lifetime warranty.”

There’s plenty to smirk at here, but Ford Motor Company lawyers do not appear to be amused. Maybe the brand still feels burned that Bentley scooped up the Continental nameplate in the mid-1950s, as we see in this letter Ford sent to the British automaker. But then, Lincoln also didn’t hesitate to essentially lift the Rolls-Royce grille and pop it onto the Continental Mark III in 1968. More recently, Bentley’s design chief publicly groused that the concept for the latest Lincoln Continental (pictured above) cribbed its design from Bentley’s Flying Spur.

With regard to the current controversy, regardless of its aural similarity to “Lincoln,” “Lynk & Co” sounds to us more like the name of a men’s clothing store than an automobile brand. If Lincoln prevails and Geely is forced to use a different name, it might be a win for both.

Originally, Chinese automaker Geely planned to launch its new car-sharing Lynk & Co brand in late 2018, but those plans are changing. The new schedule calls for the brand to be set up in Europe and in the US in 2019, starting with Berlin and San Francisco.

According to Automotive News, Berlin and San Francisco were chosen as key cities due to car sharing already being established there. “Because Lynk & Co will be the first brand to offer its owners the possibility to share their cars when they are not used, we are starting from cities with a high penetration of shared-economy services,” says Alain Visser, the company’s senior vice president of marketing and sales, according to comments reported by AN.

Lynk & Co will initially focus on China sales, as that’s where the partially Volvo-based vehicles will be manufactured. The 01 crossover will lead the way by late 2017, and it will be followed by the still-mysterious 02 in the summer of 2018. Recently, photos were leaked of a concept sedan that might hint of the 02’s styling, but Lynk & Co representatives said it was merely designed to showcase the potential of the platform. As for the third model, the 03 compact concept was unveiled in Shanghai this week, and it is planned to reach production by the end of 2018.

Visser told Automotive News that from 2020 on, Lynk & Co is expected to sell 500,000 vehicles globally, with narrowly more than half of those sales made in China, and the rest consisting of combined European and US sales. Those will be boosted by free connectivity solutions and what the brand calls lifetime warranties.
