John Carroll Lynch‘s Officer Rick Legarski was a cocky, taunting son-of-a-gun right up until the end of Tuesday’s Big Sky fall finale… when he goaded Cassie Dewell into shooting him in the head.

The hour opened with Legarski having visions of driving a hammer into his wife, Merilee’s, skull for daring to dance with another man. But he thought better of it, later announcing to Ronald that after the Canadians picked up Jerrie, Grace and Dani that day, he was going to get out of the sex-trafficking business for good.

He was also half a step ahead of Cassie and Jenny, having moved the kidnapped women just before the duo got the sheriff’s forces to descend upon the Building of Land Management property. With the trio now tied up in the basement of the All In Bar, Cassie eventually realized that that might be where Rick was holding them. When she found him there with the women, they both pulled their weapons. And though her hands shook and Legarski mocked her for her inability to pull the trigger at first, Cassie eventually squeezed off a shot that lodged itself in Rick’s skull.

So that’s the first thing we discussed with Lynch when we got him on the phone Tuesday.

TVLINE | Being shot in the head is not really something people bounce back from. Are you allowed to say whether or not he’s a goner?
Am I allowed to say? I don’t know. I will say that whatever happens is appropriate for this character.

TVLINE | Rick mentions throughout this episode that he’s unraveling a bit. Do you think that the events of this episode would’ve gone differently if he hadn’t been feeling like it was all falling apart?
One of the things that I’ve been really excited about is exploring the decisions of someone who is not capable of compartmentalizing his decisions. They have an effect on him, as opposed to someone who’s able to continue on without cost. This is an appropriate response to the cost of it all, you know what I mean? Rick Legarski in his prime would never have been a sex trafficker. We have to believe that, at some point, he was what everybody thought he was. And then something happened to him. He took the power into his own hands, made his own decisions. So this is what appropriately happens to him in the course of that. Karma’s a bitch, you know what I mean? A pain in the ass.

Big Sky Recap Season 1 Episode 5 Rick DiesTVLINE | You bring up that Rick wasn’t always the way he is now. We saw Rick recruit Ronald, but do you know how Rick was recruited? Or might that be something that we see in the season as it moves forward?
For me, I’m not sure what will unfold in the remainder of the season, if you’ll find out that or not. I don’t know. For me, the character was watching his corner of Montana fall apart. He was watching the growth of a lot of things that weren’t supposed to be there: methamphetamines, poverty and other things. He made a decision that he can’t clean it all up, but he could handle basically exporting, in his mind, the problem of sex workers in his little area. The choices he made around it obviously had more to do with his misogyny and his sense of entitlement with the law. And anyone who takes the law into their own hands eventually makes those kinds of mistakes, and these were doozies.

TVLINE | Merilee’s confession that she’d danced with another man hit Rick harder than I would’ve expected it to. Do you think he thought it would’ve hit him that hard?
No. I think he’s surprised at how much he cares. Not that he didn’t think he cared, but he is surprised at how deeply wounded he is by the betrayal. And for him, it is a betrayal. It is nothing in comparison to what he’s doing. [Laughs] In terms of betrayals, it’s nothing like the betrayal he’s already participating in: in keeping this horrific thing from her, in engaging in it in the first place, in creating a circumstance in which her life and reputation are forfeit. I don’t think he thinks in those terms; again, all of it’s very selfish. I think he’s quite surprised by how deeply he feels for her. In his mind, if he can just finish this thing out, he can find redemption again. But, you know, Cassie Dewell has other plans.

TVLINE | Whenever anybody holds a very strong ideology, there are always loopholes.
Yes.

TVLINE | You can always find loopholes for something you want to do, or to forgive something someone you love has done.
That’s right.

big sky recap season 1 episode 5 jerrieTVLINE | So when he’s recruiting Ronald, all I could think of was, “The problem is not the sex workers. The problem is men like Ronald.”
Yes. Let’s figure out who to blame: Let’s blame the woman who’s desperate. He’s obviously blaming the wrong person. This is going to sound really… I watched this amazing TED Talk between this woman and this man. They have a co-TED Talk about the night he committed date rape on her in high school. He was a transfer student from Australia in Iceland, and they have a conversation… about that evening. She says something that I think is an important thing, and certainly true and obvious: The problem of rape, the problem of sex trafficking, is not a woman’s problem, it’s a man’s problem. The way in which we’re socializing men is clearly incorrect. You know that phrase “She’s an occasion to sin,” which is a line that I came up with [Laughs], which is what the Jesuits told me about sex when I was in high school — that the circumstances are “an occasion to sin.” And they were talking about the circumstances; I don’t think they were intending to say that women were an occasion to sin. But for a 14-year-old, 15-year-old boy? That’s how he’s going to interpret it. ‘Cause he’s not the problem. And I don’t think Rick ever got over that mentality. I don’t think Rick ever got over that “I’m supposed to be dominant, I’m supposed to be in charge, I’m supposed to make the decisions, I’m supposed to care in the way that I care for people, and it’s all about me.” And clearly, it is!

TVLINE | I don’t know what your personal political preferences are, and it doesn’t really matter for the purposes of this question. But Big Sky was made during the year of a highly polarizing presidential election, and Rick really does stand for a lot of the things that the far Right stood for. I don’t think he ever says the phrase “Make America great again,” but it definitely could have come out of his mouth very easily. How much was what was going on in America’s politics come to mind when you were playing him?
I really do feel like the people who write television and create television often live in a bubble away from people who live lives outside of that bubble but have nothing to do with that. We’re trying to create a world that, especially when the show takes place in Montana — I don’t know how many of the writers have been to Montana. I certainly have not been. I based my understanding of the character based on my own experience of living in Colorado, growing up in Colorado which at the time I grew up was a decidedly Red state. It wasn’t the pot-legalized, larger version of Seattle that it is now. But what I had in my mind mostly was trying to figure out the way in which the world looks from the perspective of this person at this moment. And not as a reflection of — I hope — not as a reflection of what people in a bubble inside an industry are saying that he’s saying, if that makes any sense.

I was really sensitive to the idea of “This sounds like somebody from the outside looking in, not from the inside looking out.” I hope that I reached some level of “inside looking out,” in this deluded, horrible person. This is not the ethos of someone who is earnestly involved in, let’s assume there are people in the world that are trying to make America great again the way they believe it needs to be. I think Rick is that person, [but] he’s just crazy. These decisions are not rational decisions. They’re impulsive and they’re inappropriate and, in some ways, sad — especially when he has a reputation, he has a standing in the community, he has a wife who could potentially love him, and all of that he puts at risk for this behavior, and he doesn’t realize it until it’s too late. And in that way, it’s sad. But he’s responsible. And that responsibility comes to roost in this episode.

big sky recap season 1 episode 5 rick dies deadTVLINE | I want to leave you on a slightly lighter note: When I spoke with Jade Pettyjohn, she told me that was actually you carrying her around during the episode where Grace escapes. And so much of Rick’s dialogue capitalized on your stature. So I guess I’m asking: Is your back OK?
My back is fine. [Laughs] I have to say: One time I made a movie, actually here in Vancouver, called Love Happens. There was a shot of me getting off of a tour bus and going into a Home Depot with a bunch of people, as part of a grief seminar thing. It’s a long story. But anyway, the shot was beautiful. It was a rising crane shot on the Home Depot with everybody walking into the store. And I had a cart. When I did the shot, it seemed perfectly rational and reasonable that all of us as grief people would be going in there. And then when I saw the shot, I was like, “Why is that adult going into a store with 40 children?” I often forget how large I am in comparison to other people. [Laughs] And Jade is decidedly a petite person. So I look even more like a different species when I’m carrying her around. That’s just true.

TVLINE | I have never looked at you on screen and thought, “Wow, what a giant. How did they ever fit that man in the frame?!”
Well, when you look at my work again, and you notice that most of the time, there are no over-the-shoulder shots to my scene partner. They’re always across-the-arm shots, because if they did over-the-shoulder shots, everyone would look like they were 3 ft. tall. Actually, one of the directors of this show was like, “Let’s bring the camera down. I don’t want to diminish the other characters.” [Laughs] But it was like, why did you even try an over-the-shoulder shot? It always looks like I’m loomng! Basically, when I’m looking at a script, if I don’t know who I’m going to be reading for or looking at, I often look for the word “lumber,” and likely that’s the character I’ll be reading for.

WWE seemed to overestimate the amount of light needed to make the ring visible and fans took to social media to voice their anger.

Chants even broke out at one point to try and get WWE to dim the brightness.

The problem seemed to impact one side of the iconic baseball stadium in Arizona.

One person tweeted: “Biggest heat tonight is the light shining in everyone’s face. Multiple “Turn the light off!” chants.”

Another said: “I’m dying inside with this light. Entire side is chanting “Turn the light off”.”

The opening match of the official show saw SmackDown Women’s Champion Asuka defend against Becky Lynch.

Fans will hope WWE rectify the problem at some point during the event with lots of action on the card as the Road to WrestleMania begins.

The most intriguing are of course the Men’s and Women’s Royal Rumble matches.

Favourites for the men’s match are Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman.

That’s after the Monster Among Men replaced John Cena on Sunday afternoon before the show.

Charlotte Flair is the overwhelming favourite for the Women’s Royal Rumble match but Becky Lynch could make a surprise appearance if she loses to Asuka.

Other matches on the show include the WWE Champion Daniel Bryan taking on AJ Styles and Universal Champion Brock Lesnar defending against Finn Balor.

RAW Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey will also face Sasha Banks.

Superstars will be trying to impress with WrestleMania 35 around the corner.

The entertainment extravaganza takes place at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, April 7.

Lynch and RAW Women’s Champion Rousey have been feuding ever since last October after WWE’s inaugural all-women’s Pay-Per-View event Evolution.

The two WWE megastars were set to battle at Survivor Series but the match was cancelled after The Irish Lass Kicker suffered a broken nose and a concussion at the hands of Nia Jax.

The Man, however, hasn’t stopped targeting the WWE Hall of Famer and is determined to lock horns with her at WrestleMania.

According to Wrestling Inc, the two-time women’s champion is also adamant that they both deserve to become the first ever women to headline Mania next year on April 7 at the MetLife Stadium in New York because they are part of the hottest angle in wrestling.

Lynch told E&C’s Pod of Awesomeness when asked if they are worthy of the main-event spot at the Show of Shows: “Absolutely.

“I will say it for this reason and it is not about gender, but it is about who are the most popular and interesting superstars on the roster?

“Right now, I cannot think of two people that have higher ratings and interest in them than myself and Ronda Rousey, and that reason alone we should be in the main event.

“If anyone else can step up and draw as much interest, then my goodness, please have at it but that is not going to happen.

“That is my spot and I am not letting anyone else take it.”

Lynch wants Rousey to be her WrestleMania opponent more than anyone else because of her incredible work in UFC which made her a pioneer in MMA.

‘Rowdy’ was crowned the first ever UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion in 2012 and was undefeated for almost three years.

Lynch added: “I would want Ronda Rousey to be my opponent at WrestleMania 35 for the simple reason that Ronda in her sport was a pioneer.

“I do not think that women would be in the UFC if not for Ronda Rousey and [UFC President] Dana White said that himself.

“When Ronda came in, we saw a star of the magnitude that may never be matched again in MMA, but that is a different sport and this is my sport.

“Here she came in with a name from somewhere else having been born tough and born this athletic creation that winning came so easily to her, and it has come so easily for her where she has picked up this game quicker than anybody I have ever seen, with maybe the exception of Kurt Angle.

“There is a lot that not only do I want to prove to myself but to the entire world, and that is one thing to be born tough like Ronda, but it is a whole different thing to be made tough the way that I am.

“That is the difference between the two of us and I am going to prove what is longer lasting and I am going to prove it in the main event of WrestleMania against Ronda Rousey.”

Shisuke Nakamura’s US Championship reign continued after picking up an impressive win over former title-holder Jeff Hardy.

The two wrestling superstars taunted one another during the match but Hardy seemed to have gotten the better of the mind games as he gained control of the match.

The Charismatic Enigma set Nakamura up for the Swanton Bomb but the US Champion knocked him down from the top rope and finished him off with a Kinshasa.

Rusev and Lana def. R-Truth and Carmella

The two teams didn’t seem to interested in wrestling at first as they started a leg split contest.

However, Rusev wasn’t able to perform one of his own and R-Truth tried to pin him.

The Bulgarian Brute though kicked out and then returned the favour as he pinned the former US Champion with a Small Package.

After the match both teams shook hands and took out Aiden English who tried to attack Rusev as well as R-Truth.

Winners: Rusev and Lana

Smackdown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch def. Charlotte Flair

Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair continued their intense rivalry in London after their incredible Last Woman Standing Match at Evolution.

Charlotte dominated the later stages of the match and tried to hit The Irish Lass Kicker with a Moonsault.

However, the high-risk move cost her as she landed on the Smackdown Women’s Champion’s knees and got pinned with a Small Package.

That was an important win for Lynch as she prepares for her big Champion vs Champion Match with Ronda Rousey ahead of Survivor Series.

WWE Champion AJ Styles def. Samoa Joe and Daniel Bryan

AJ Styles, Samoa Joe and Daniel Bryan competed in a dream match at Wembley and left it all in the ring.

Bryan tried to take out Styles with the Running Knee but the WWE Champion moved out of the way and took out The Yes Man with Styles Clash.

He then escaped Joe’s Coquina Clutch and picked up the win with the Phenomenal Forearm.

Google software engineer, Mohammad Azam, was beaten to death while three others, including a Qatari national, were severely injured by a massive mob over WhatsApp-inspired rumor which labeled them “child-lifters.”

The tragedy unfolded on Friday, when Azam, together with three of his friends, Mohammed Salman, Mohammed Salham-eid-al-Kubaisi and Noor Mohammed, stopped at a shop near Balkut Tanda on their way to Hyderabad. Seeing provincial kids running around, the men apparently offered them chocolates.

However, with ongoing rumors of a child lifting gang operating in the region, the locals assumed that the men were trying to lure the kids. To prevent what they believed was an abduction attempt, the hastily-assembled vigilantes attacked the men.

Though the four managed to escape the initial violence, a WhatsApp message of the attack triggered further massive response. Men from surrounding villages instantly went in pursuit of the four men’s car on motorcycles. During the chase, the car went off the road and fell into a culvert outside of Murki village.

The mob surrounded the vehicle, dragging the four to the ground. They beat them so severely using fists, their legs, stones and sticks, that even police who came to the rescue could not convince the crowd of 200 to step away. At least three law enforcement officers were injured in the clash.

Once the violence finally stopped, Azam succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to a hospital. The others are battling for their lives in a Hyderabad hospital. Police detained at least 32 people in connection with the vigilante action, 28 of whom were arrested, Superintendent of Police D. Devaraja announced. The administrator of a WhatsApp group, who circulated the ‘call for help’ message, was among those placed in custody. Azam’s family is now calling for the guilty to face punishment.

“He was a software engineer working with Google. He looked so sophisticated and polished in his behavior. How can anybody suspect him to be a kidnapper of children? Definitely, it would not have been the reason,”said Azam’s brother, Mohammad Akram. “The guilty should be punished so that no other innocent loses his life in this manner.”

In recent months India has witnessed a number of ‘lynch mob’ incidents that were fueled by social media rumors of child-kidnapping cells operating in certain parts of the country. Amid the outbreak of such violence, the government urged social media platforms to clamp down on the spread of such messages.

David Lynch, an artist who exists in a whooshing void full of amazing hair, cigarettes and beautiful, horrifying movies, has decided to open his own T-shirt shop on Amazon.

David Lynch doesn’t make many movies anymore – last year’s Twin Peaks revival was the first thing he’d filmed in nearly 11 years. Instead, he bides his time creating art in his studio. The art is predictably Lynchian – strange, haunting, darkly funny. Now, Lynch is offering his art to the public in a brand new way: on T-shirts.

The filmmaker launched an Amazon store the other day called Studio David Lynch, and while it’s possible he’ll sell other items in the future, the only things available now are T-shirts. Like this one, dubbed TURKEY CHEESE HEAD T-SHIRT.

The shirts all feature art created by Lynch, so if you’ve ever wanted to own any of the man’s artistic creations, here’s your chance! Each shirt will run you $ 26, which is a bit pricey for a T-shirt. But for fans of Lynch’s work, or fans of weird, abstract T-shirts, these are must-haves.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME

If you wan’t to learn more about Lynch and his art, I highly recommend the documentary David Lynch: The Art Life.

In the film, director Jon Nguyen films Lynch at work. We watch as Lynch prattles around in his studio, constantly smoking while creating strange, funny works of art. Along the way, we learn about Lynch’s youth and life, and the beginning of his filmmaking career. It’s sort of like the David Lynch origin story – the film shows us where he came from, and what drives him. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the inner world of one of the most interesting filmmakers of our time.

This in itself is a minor miracle, because Lynch is usually guarded in interviews, and almost always refuses to explain himself and his art. But Nguyen’s film found a way to get Lynch talking.

“We were able to give him a canvas to let these stories leak out, because we knew that was what we wanted to do. He’s always been reluctant to talk about his films,” Nguyen said. “He’s very reserved. Talking about his films we were like, ‘Okay, the best key to understanding his films must be from him as a person.’ And it’s not him as an adult, it’s him during formative periods. I wanted learn about him during Philadelphia. I was like, ‘Oh, there must be interesting stuff, because that’s when he was really formulating these ideas. Must be,’ so we framed it that way up to Eraserhead. Once he becomes a filmmaker living in L.A. was not interesting because it was a different lifestyle. The early, young artist period, I knew was going to be interesting. Using that framework we were able to dig up stories to help us to really understand his films a lot better.”

Update: British actress Lashana Lynch is in negotiations to take over the role left by DeWanda Wise in Captain Marvel. Lynch is best known for playing the lead role in the ABC period drama series Still Star-Crossed. Our original story continues below.

Between starring in a hit Netflix original series by Spike Lee and graduating to the Marvel comic book movie Captain Marvel, DeWanda Wise was about to be very busy. But even the She’s Gotta Have It star can’t have it all.

Three months after her casting was announced, DeWanda Wise has left her Captain Marvel role due to scheduling conflicts.

Wise has exited Captain Marvel due to scheduling conflicts, according to Deadline. Sources tell Deadline that the scheduling conflicts are reportedly with Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It, in which Wise stars as the lead character Nola Darling.

This news comes shortly after the announcement that Wise had been cast in an undisclosed role in Captain Marvel, to co-star alongside Brie Larson, who plays the titular superhero. Rumors swirled that Wise would play Monica Rambeau, an energy-controlling superhero who takes on the Captain Marvel title at one point.

She’s Gotta Have It is based on Spike Lee’s debut 1986 film and follows Wise’s Nola Darling as she juggles dating three men with her art career. The series was renewed for Season 2 in January, just as Wise joined the cast of Captain Marvel.

Captain Marvel stars Larson as Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA fuses with an alien’s, giving her powers of flight, super strength, and energy projection. The plot for the Marvel Cinematic Universe film remains mostly under wraps, though we do know the story takes place in the 1990s. Captain Marvel will be part of the MCU’s expansion into its “cosmic” universe, introducing the sinister Skrull alien race. Jude Law is set to appear as the original alien Captain Marvel, and the film also stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the villain.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are directing the film.

Captain Marvel is set for March 8, 2019.
