Flights with stringent hand luggage rules can be highly frustrating for holidaymakers – and Ryanair in particular has made its rules even more restrictive. Strict regulations mean careful planning is required when packing cabin bags. The key is to pack as lightly as possible and to take items that will prove highly versatile. Travel expert Adam Ewart, CEO of luggage delivery business Send My Bag, has revealed one key piece of luggage you should pack. It’s important the clothing you’re taking on holiday is both versatile and low maintenance. This is crucial if packing light. One very useful item – especially if you’re going to a warm destination – is a sarong. “A sarong is great for a hot day but can also be used as a changing room at the beach,” Adam told Express.co.uk. Further uses include: “A tablecloth for a picnic, a scarf if you’re chilly, a makeshift satchel for your souvenirs, a pillow when you’re weary, a head scarf to protect you from the sun… the list goes on. Be inventive and pack multiple-use items.” The fabric of your clothing could make all the difference when packing for a budget airline flight. “Consider the fabric of the clothing you’re taking and factor in its quality, thickness, weight, and texture,” Adam said. “Try and whittle your selection down where possible to clothing that is durable, light, and isn’t bulky. “Synthetic materials are often better than cotton because they’re lighter, smaller and they dry faster.” In a further bid to be versatile, make sure you take clothes that go with each other. “Think carefully about the different colours of clothing you’re taking with you,” Adam advised. “Choose options which are compatible with a number of other colours, reducing the number of clothes you will need to bring along and increasing the variety of outfits you can make. The extra 10 minutes of outfit planning is always worth it.” The way you physically pack the items you’re taking in your bag will also make all the difference. “Rolling your clothes (not folding!) is a great way to maximise the space in your bag,” said Adam. “Use the same principle with your socks and underwear and then tuck them inside your shoes. These techniques will save you space in the rest of your bag.” A very useful packing technique has been revealed by Bag company Trakkle. The method is called the ‘overnight burrito’ as it sees the traveller tightly packing enough stuff needed for one night in a nifty burrito style. In the video, the demonstrator successfully packs a T-shirt, underwear, a pair of socks, a charger and a toothbrush. Ryanair changed their hand luggage rules in November 2018 and severely cut the volume of baggage passengers can bring on board. The amount you can bring on board all depends on how much you are willing to pay. According to the Ryanair website: “All passengers are entitled to bring one small personal bag on board.” It “must fit under the seat in front of you (40cm x 20cm x 25cm). Examples include a handbag, laptop bag and small backpack.” This means the overall volume permitted for free has dropped by almost two-thirds from 58 litres to 20 litres. However, no matter what passengers pay, they will always be entitled to this small personal bag. If travellers want to bring more luggage they will need to pay for priority boarding. or purchase a plus, flexi or family ticket. “Passengers who have purchased “Priority & 2 Cabin Bags” or Plus/Flexi/Family ticket or connecting flight ticket can bring one additional 10kg bag on board,” states the Ryanair website. This “must fit into the baggage sizer (not exceeding 10kg and dimensions 55cm x 40cm x 20cm).” However, the prices offered by the Ryanair website can be misleading on certain flights. According to the Ryanair site, “Priority & 2 Cabin Bags” will cost “from £6” but when Express.co.uk went through the booking process for a flight from London Luton to Dublin, it actually cost £10. A similar subtle price hike can also be seen on the third luggage offering by the airline. This is for non-priority customers who wish to bring a second larger wheelie bag. This can weigh no more than 10kg and must be checked-in at the airport bag drop desk prior to entering security. The Ryanair site claims this nag will cost “from £8,” but when Express.co.uk went through the booking process, it cost £12. Ryanair appears to explain this discrepancy with the alert “Pricing for these products will vary depending on availability.” In line with this, return flights from Dublin to Luton, offered priority bags for just £6. The airline has cautioned that passengers who bring a small bag to the gate which is too big to fit under the seat in front will be charged a fee of £25. The same will apply if travellers attempt to bring an unpaid-for second bag to the gate. Ryanair insists the new changes are to improve timekeeping rather than make more money. Those wanting to jet away on a short weekend away will no doubt want to save on luggage fees and cram their belongings into hand luggage. Meanwhile, others opting for the UK carrier on a long-haul flight are afforded a much larger allocation. Those on British Airway’s numerous benefits schemes can also indulge in additional extras too. With seemingly a host of different facts and figures when it comes to luggage, Express.co.uk has simplified the British Airways baggage regulations. What is British Airways’ cabin bag policy? For British Airways passengers travelling on a hand baggage only ticket, customers are permitted to carry one piece of hand luggage and one small item – such as a handbag or laptop – on board. Hand luggage must not exceed 56cm x 45cm x 25cm and the small item must be no bigger than 40cm x 30cm x 15cm. Both items can weight up to 23kg each. Passengers can check in additional baggage, yet it will cost extra. Those travelling with an infant or a child up to 11 years old can check in two items, such as a fully collapsible pushchair, a car seat or a travel cot for free for each infant or child. What is British Airways’ hold luggage policy? British Airways’ regulation for checked in baggage are that it measures a total of up to 90 x 75 x 43cm (35.5 x 29.5 x 16in). This includes any handles, labels or pockets that may stick out of the main suitcase shape. It is not possible for passengers travelling together to pool their weight allocations, as is the option with some airlines such as easyJet. Yet the amount of bags that can be taken into the hold by each passenger does vary, the airline insists, depending on the cabin the passenger is travelling in, and their frequent flyer member status. What perks do British Airways’ Executive Club and oneworld members have? Silver and Gold Executive Club Members and equivalent members in other oneworld frequent flyer programmes get additional baggage allowances. For Gold Members, this equates to one additional checked bag in any travel class. For silver and oneworld flyers, there is a boost of two extra bags when travelling in economy. Ryanair appears to have upped its hand luggage fees. The price hike comes after the Irish airline introduced strict rules in November 2018. Under the new policy, only a small handbag or laptop-size bag will be allowed onboard. It has to measure no more than 40cm x 20cm x 25cm to be allowed in the cabin for free. Previously, passengers who wanted to bring more luggage had to pay £6 extra to benefit from priority boarding, which they could bring both a small bag and a larger bag for the overhead locker. Ryanair travellers could also pay to take a suitcase on board that measured no more than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. It couldn’t more than 10kg and would be left at the airport drop desk. Previously this check-in bag cost £8 during booking or £10 after booking. However, passengers booking now will find, after going through the flight selection process, that priority boarding has increased by £2 to £8. Meanwhile, the extra 10kg suitcase will now cost £10 during booking. These new sums can only be seen once flights have been selected. Ryanair’s cabin bag policy page continues to show the prices of ‘From £6’ for priority and ‘From £8’ for the 10kg bag. There has been no official announcement regarding these increased fees. Express.co.uk has contacted Ryanair for comment on the price hike but at the time of writing had received no response. The upped charges are likely to cause further annoyance among passengers. Following the introduction of the new rules in November, social media was flooded with complaints about airport queues. Many Ryanair passengers uploaded photos of the long queues they were experiencing at the airport. One passenger tweeted: “Ryanair how can you advertise as priority boarding when over half the plane have so-called ‘priority’?” Another wrote: “As expected, Ryanair’s new policy that you must purchase Priority to get your small bag in the cabin = everyone books Priority.” “Expect this to become the new ‘normal’ and something else to be removed for additional purchase. Successful but relentlessly irritating business plan.” Some have said they’d like their money back as paying for priority means very little. “I paid priority boarding but looks like it’s not priority. How do I have my money back?” one person tweeted, along with a picture of people queueing. The airline has cautioned that passengers who bring a small bag to the gate which is too big to fit under the seat in front will be charged a fee of £25. The same will apply if travellers attempt to bring an unpaid-for second bag to the gate. Ryanair previously insisted the new changes are to improve timekeeping rather than make more money. The airline intends to streamline the process by eliminating the need to take cabin bags off passengers at the departure gate and check them into the hold. Ryanair’s Chief Marketing Officer Kenny Jacobs said last year: “This new lower cost €8 x 10kg checked bag means that checked bag income will probably decline as we deliver more savings to Ryanair customers. “Up to 50 per cent of customers will continue to bring two free carry-on bags as they travel on Priority Boarding and this new policy will speed up the boarding and cut flight delays.” Flights for many plane passengers are a chance to catch up on sleep ahead of a holiday. But with so many noises and distractions going on in the cabin, slumber can often be hard to come by. However, by packing one simple thing in your hand luggage you might be able to fall asleep more easily. Staying warm helps people go to sleep – but this is often hard to achieve in an aircraft. Consequently, it can be a good idea to pack a pair of extra cosy socks to help keep you warm. “With the harsh air-conditioning on planes, it can sometimes be difficult to stay warm during your flight, so it’s important to pack some comfy and thick socks in your hand-luggage,” said sleep expert Neil Robinson from bed brand Sealy UK. “Having warm feet helps you to drift off faster, as well as have a less restless sleep,” he added. For the full, high-quality sleep experience, it’s worth packing two other items in your hand luggage, too. Firstly, Neil recommends bringing an eye mask. It may not be the most sociable move if travelling with others but it will help block out unnecessary light. “Planes are full of bright lights – from the overhead reading lights to the blue light emitted by the TV screens – which can have a negative impact on our slumber,” explained Neil. “When we witness a light form, it stimulates a nerve pathway from the eye to the brain this stops us from feeling tired, making it harder to drift off. “Wearing an eye mask will help to block out these lights and help you to fall asleep and stay asleep.” Secondly, passengers are advised to pack ear plugs to fully switch off from the plane’s distractions. “With everything from screaming children, pilot announcements and coughing passengers, there are lots of noises that can keep you from getting that all-important shut-eye,” said Neil. “Ear plugs can help to muffle this and turn it into soothing ‘white noise.'” Neil also recommends steering clear of any technology before you try and get some sleep. He explained: “While it may be tempting to watch a film or read on your tablet during the flight, the blue light emitted from the screens impacts our levels of melatonin, the sleep-inducing hormone. “By avoiding technology for a minimum of 30 minutes before you’re planning to get some kip, you can help ensure a better quality sleep.” A flight attendant has also recommended bringing a pen or pencil in your hand luggage for a flight. She told Readers Digest: “If you’re travelling overseas, do yourself a favour and bring a pen. You would not believe how many people travel without one, and you need one to fill out the immigration forms. I carry some, but I can’t carry 200.” People who forget to pack one could find themselves frantically asking other passengers or delayed at the airport when they haven’t filled in their form.

Hand luggage travellers can save both time and money by not checking in a suitcase. Some airlines can charge as much as the ticket to check in a bag and passengers could see themselves waiting as long as an hour waiting at the baggage carousel. The downside of travelling with hand luggage only is the hand luggage restriction which only allows 100ml or less. There is a way passengers can pack more than 100ml without breaking the rules at security.
Boots offer an airport service which allows passengers to order their products five working days before flying.
They can then pick up their items from inside the terminal after going through security.
This can mean being able to get full-sized toiletries and suncream without breaking the 100ml rule.
The Boots website explains: “Collect your order from one of our airport stores and get all your travel essentials right before you board your flight.
“Simply order five working days before you fly.”
There are currently 29 Boots branches at airports across the UK.
This includes Heathrow Airport, Gatwick Airport, London City Airport, London Stansted Airport, London Luton Airport, Manchester Airport, Birmingham Airport and Leeds Bradford Airport.
Many items could break the liquids rule inadvertently, including drinks and perfumes.
Food items which are classed as liquids and break the rule are syrups, jams and honey.
Anything that can become a liquid such as frozen items or meltable items such as cheese are also banned.
The 100ml liquid rule was introduced in 2006 following a foiled terrorist attack.
Known as the 2006 Transatlantic Aircraft Plot, a group of terrorists planned to use liquid explosives disguised as soft drinks on a number of flights from the UK to the US and Canada.
At the time, all passengers were forbidden from carrying anything with them onto the plane, with all flights cancelled from London Heathrow Airport.
Liquids were reintroduced later that year, with the current 100ml restrictions.
New airport security technology could soon end the 100ml rule however with scanners, similar to CAT scanners, bring introduced, which are able to detect explosives.
Christmas holidays see Britons jetting all over the world whether in search of winter sun, a festive break or just to join loved ones. However, travel experts have warned holidaymakers need to be particularly careful when it comes to hand luggage at this time of year. Presents and Christmas go hand in hand but gifts may land you in trouble at the airport. It’s vital you remove wrapping paper before you go through airport security.
This strict rule is because security officials may wish to examine such packages – and you’ll have to unwrap the presents there and then.
Adam Ewart, CEO and Founder of luggage shipping company Send My Bag, spoke to Express.co.uk about why this is so important.
“As you prepare to head off for the holidays carrying festive gifts for family and friends, my best advice is to avoid wrapping them,” he said.
“You may think you are saving yourself time by wrapping gifts before you leave, but security holds the right to rip open your beautifully done wrapping, should they want to inspect the package.
“This applies to both checked and carry-on luggage. Save the wrapping until you arrive so you don’t have to worry about your gifts and their journey through security.”
Ryanair also provides advice with regard to presents and wrapping on their website.
“Don’t pack wrapped gifts in your checked-in luggage. Wrapped gifts will be searched and screened by airport security staff,” said the site.
“Do take a gift bag that can be folded and packed flat or save your expert wrapping skills until you arrive at your destination.”
It’s important to remember that liquid restrictions still apply (under 100ml) even to presents.
Gatwick Airport’s online guide states: “Presents in liquid form (e.g. perfume, toiletries or alcohol) can be carried in cabin baggage but this is subject to the current measures.
“It would therefore be advisable to place such presents – unwrapped – in hold baggage. Liquids of any amount can still be stored in hold baggage.”
There are several popular festive items that can also catch travellers out in hand luggage.
For example, brandy butter may start off solid but at the end of a flight it can turn into a liquid which means airlines count it as such, so it will have to be under 100ml to be able to fly with you. The same rule applies to camembert.
Snow globes also have liquid in them which means they won’t be allowed to pass through security.
If you’re remaining in the UK this Christmas and hoping to enjoy a break in the snow, the best places in the country for the white stuff have been revealed.
Unsurprisingly, you may have to head pretty far north to boost the odds. The Cairngorm National Park in Scotland gets more snow than any other are in the UK, with snow falling on 76 days throughout the year.
Flights with such budget airlines as Ryanair and easyJet are undeniably cheap but they can often be uncomfortable in many ways for passengers. By taking certain steps, however, a flight can be improved – and being savvy with your hand luggage is a great place to start. Travel experts at US website The Points Guy have revealed the all-important item to include in your cabin baggage. It can help make your flight all the more peaceful as you will be less bothered by any noise.
They advise packing – and wearing – noise-cancelling headphones to help you better survive the flight.
“Announcements typically hit just as you are nodding off for your nap, so a nice pair of noise-cancelling headphones would ensure a little peace and quiet on your flight,” The Points Guy contributor Lori Zaino said.
There are also items you should consider not packing if travelling with Ryanair, now the low-cost airline’s hand luggage rules are so strict.
Passengers with the budget airline can now only travel with a personal bag that measures no more than 40cm x 20cm x 25cm for free and need to pay extra if they wish to extra bags on board.
Such strict regulations require passengers to be expert minimalist packers if they wish to avoid splashing out.
Adam Ewart, founder of luggage shipping company Send My Bag, has shared his top packing tips to help passengers on their next flight – and there’s one thing, in particular, you should avoid packing.
Ryanair passengers should definitely steer clear of packing toiletries, Adam reveals.
“There are few more heavy and bulky items than bottled liquids, gels and aerosols, and they are also prone to leaking and can cause a security concern.
“Items such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash and sunblock can be bought at your destination for minimal amounts versus luggage costs with most airlines.”
Travellers should also not pack any books as these are heavy and take up too much space, experts at luggage storage network Stasher advised.
Instead, use a tablet device and download books onto that, thereby keeping a whole selection of material at your fingertips.
Under Ryanair’s new policy, only a small handbag or laptop-size bag will be allowed onboard.
For passengers who want to bring more luggage, for the price of £6 they can benefit from priority boarding and can bring both a small bag and a larger bag for the overhead locker.
However, with the majority of passengers opting for priority boarding so they can bring more luggage on, airport queues have increased.
Passengers have united on Twitter to point out that despite paying extra they are being made to wait in line.
One passenger tweeted: “Ryanair how can you advertise as priority boarding when over half the plane have so-called ‘priority’?”
Another wrote: “As expected, Ryanair’s new policy that you must purchase Priority to get your small bag in the cabin = everyone books Priority.”
“Expect this to become the new ‘normal’ and something else to be removed for additional purchase. Successful but relentlessly irritating business plan.”
Etekcity
There’s no bigger rush than finding an international flight deal. There’s also no bigger buzzkill than finding out that there are unreasonably low bag weights.
So, before I went on a two-week, three-city vacation to Australia, I bought this $12 digital luggage scale from Etekcity. It saved me from having to pay $80 in overweight baggage fees on that trip alone.
After booking my tickets to Australia, when I read that passengers could only bring one carry-on and one personal item that totaled to 15 pounds and check-in bags couldn’t be more than 40 pounds, I knew I was going to have a hard time packing. Even though I was traveling for two weeks, you can bet that I was packing three weeks’ worth of clothes, accessories, shoes, and makeup. Not to mention I had to save space for all the souvenirs I’d bring home.
The digital scale proved to be a lifesaver. I was able to weigh my bags throughout my packing process so I packed more thoughtfully (I guess I didn’t need five pairs of jeans after all) and avoided paying overweight baggage fees on all the legs of my trip.

Once you’ve packed your bag or suitcase, loop the scale around any handle. Then lift the scale up for a few seconds, and the digital display will show how much your bag weighs. From there, you can repack as needed in the comfort of your own home — not at the airport in front of 12 annoyed passengers and future seatmates. Even if you aren’t an overpacker like me, you’ll have total peace of mind just in case check-in agents try to scam you and say your bag is over the weight limit.
Since I bought this scale, I’ve used it on trips to Iceland, Hong Kong, Turks and Caicos, Greece, and more, and have never had an issue with overweight baggage. In fact, it’s helped me discover that I had more room in my suitcase for shoes.
