With its rustic low-poly aesthetic, systemic world design, and partially hands-off approach to combat, Project Shore looks to be an interesting entry among indie turn-based strategy games.

As a mercenary company commander, you are merely one party among a larger world in Project Shore. Reminiscent of the tactical RPG Battle Brothers, the fate of your mercenary brethren are in your hands, both in combat through smart orders and equipment and off the field through upgrades and picking your battles and navigating the domino effect of your choice of who to fight and how that influences the landscape.

Combat is the core of Project Shore. With up to 18 warriors or more in your unit during a battle, it would be tedious to issue orders to each one as conflicts grow more complex. Instead Project Shore revolves around indirect command. Groups of warriors are divided into “union” to which you order to support, attack, move, hold position, and so on. On a more granular level, “preparation points” lets you fine-tune union behavior and prioritize certain actions, to unleash specific tactics.

The horde of enemies have always been a staple of the arcade and dual stick shooter, not just for the tense retreat to survive but for the satisfying rush of obliterating such an overwhelming threat with your superior skills. But in Swarmlake, overcoming the horde, the tidal wave of danger, isn’t an option. All you can do is survive longer and beat your high scores as the low-poly flood washes over your shotgun-wielding avatar.

First glances may bring to mind the hellish arena and swarms of Devil Daggers, but play Swarmlake and the game reveals itself to be its own beast. If Devil Daggers offered desperate breathless survival against nightmarish odds, Swarmlake is something more calming and graceful, as you rocket-jump over the waves to outmaneuver and reposition before landing to collect your point shards and continue the dance of evasion. That dance and wave surfing is Swarmlake‘s distilled gameplay loop; no other modes to master, no other weapons, just you versus the endless crush of low-poly foes, beat your high score.

The spectacle of those incoming enemies, the shadow of the hundreds-strong waves blocking out the sunlight, or the hailstorm of shapes below as you arc overhead, are its unique thrills. Swarmlake may be minimalist in its design, but the visuals of your single shotgun against thousands of enemies makes quite an impression when you’re in the midst of the action.

Fumiko! is a soothing experience, savoring in the joy of exploration and the thrill of being able to leap so high you feel like you’re flying. Being able to do so in landscapes that cast off the rules of reality just makes wandering even better, offering endless vistas and environmental surprises as you cross the network. Helping Fumiko get power is all well and good, but I’m just happy to find myself lost in this alternate world.

In Brave Odyssea, a vast world awaits you. But not one explored on foot or by car or air, but by sea, within your rusty workhorse of a ship. Nick Carver’s “open-open RPG” may be early in development, but its early screenshots and details – showcasing intriguing shores and aquatic beasts – already seem promising.

Iron rigs belching flame and smoke in the sky. Glacial seas. Ancient bridges spanning shores. Sprawling forests. Stepped falls leading to inland waters. The world of Brave Odyssea is diverse and deadly. Early concept art reveals the dangers that can lurk out in those waters, like a massive hermit crab that uses a derelict ship hull as a shell. But an adventurer such as yourself won’t be stopped by such long distances and dangerous threats; in Odyssea, you’ll have a selection of unique tools at your disposal for aid and defense. A particularly powerful one is the explosive flying drone that can help clear obstructions.
