MORE ‘AHS’

Attention, campers: We’re about to spoil the events of Wednesday’s American Horror Story finale. You’ve been warned!

Margaret Booth may not have lived to be AHS: 1984‘s final girl, but she still played an unforgettable role in Wednesday’s finale, one that cost her an arm and a leg. And another arm. And another leg.

“Ryan called me one day, and he said to me through laughter, ‘Well, we figured out what we’re doing to Margaret. We’re throwing her in a wood chipper!’” Leslie Grossman tells TVLine. “My first reaction was, ‘That is the single most perfect way for that character to meet her end.’ I think it was quite appropriate!”

Truth be told, Grossman is oversimplifying her character’s demise. Camp Redwood’s glamorous-yet-villainous director wasn’t just tossed into a wood chipper — not in one piece, anyway. The vengeful spirits of her victims began by severing each of her limbs from her torso, chipping away at her in pieces.

“It was as horrible as you could possible imagine, but isn’t that what she deserved?” Grossman says. “Let’s be honest here.”

Below, Grossman elaborates on the events of AHS: 1984‘s surprisingly upbeat finale, including her thoughts on Brooke and Donna sharing the title of final girl.

'AHS: 1984' FinaleTVLINE | You said Margaret had this coming, and I agree, but I liked her.
You know what? People were great to me this year. Like, really lovely, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The main thing people said was, “I love you and I hate her,” which means I was doing my job. You need characters like that to meet a horrible death. She’s so terrible! People have asked me if she had any redeeming qualities, and she really did not. I don’t think there was even a place for a redemptive storyline for Margaret. She needed to be put down in the most violent of ways. She really had it coming, didn’t she?

TVLINE | Your presence on Horror Story has increased steadily over the past few seasons, which is exciting. Does that come with any added pressure?
Only pressure in that I always want to do the very best that I can. I’m very aware that Ryan Murphy has given me a gift, and I want to make sure that I make the most of the opportunity that he’s giving me. So I’ve only felt pressure from myself, but I’ve been fortunate enough to be surrounded by unbelievable actors. And everybody says this about their own show, but I know we have the best crew in the business. On Ryan’s shows, the hair, the makeup and the wardrobe are so integral, so all of those things were like scaffolding for me to lean on. My job is just to not f–k it up.

TVLINE | We got a much happier ending than I was expecting. What did you think of the way these stories wrapped up?
I loved that Donna and Brooke shared the final girl status, and I thought it was so lovely that Jingles got a redemptive storyline. I loved that combination of camp and gore and shock and horror with — for lack of a better term — a lot of heart. I thought we needed that lovely ending. I was glad to see that Montana found love. It was such a nice ending, even if it also had someone going through a wood chipper.

TVLINE | In your mind, will the ghosts remain trapped at camp forever? Or will someone come along and save them someday?
In my mind, the ghosts will live on in Camp Redwood. The show still does so well, and I could see it going on for years and years, so it would be a lot of fun to go back and revisit those ghosts down the line and see what’s going on there.

Briarcliff ManorTVLINE | Never say never. This season is connected to at least one more.
Yes! And I love that Margaret owns properties from [Asylum]. I love how they weave in all those little Easter eggs.

TVLINE | Speaking of weaving, Margaret had some really outrageous looks this season. Did you have a favorite?
That’s a difficult question. I really loved the 1989 iteration of Margaret. Ivana Trump was very much the mood board. It was Dynasty and Ivana Trump. Lou Eyrich oversees all of the costuming, but Paula Bradley was the one who executed it this season, always under a time crunch. I don’t know how she did it. All of the stuff I wore was vintage, except for the pink coat I got killed in, because we needed multiples for all the stunts. … I thought that the camp outfit was perfect for Margaret, but I’m not going to miss those high-waisted pleated shorts and knee-high socks. Those I’m very happy to say goodbye to, even though they served a purpose for the character.

TVLINE | You also got a lot of the best lines. Do any spring to mind?
As per usual, Ryan made sure I had the most fun things to say. Nearest and dearest to my heart was, “They’re dead, Courtney! Kajagoogoo is dead!” I think that’s what it was. I couldn’t look at Leslie Jordan in that scene. Actually, I couldn’t look at him in any of the scenes we did together, because he’s so funny.

TVLINE | I loved Courtney! I didn’t know he was going to be in this season, so I was very excited when he appeared.
I didn’t know he was going to be in it this season until I saw the pictures from his fitting. I was like, “Wait, that’s who’s playing Courtney?” I literally jumped up and down, like a child. His Beverly Leslie on Will & Grace is one of the true great comedic performances ever on television. And he is even better when you meet him. That’s the thing about working in the Ryan world, you get to work with all these people you’ve admired for so long.

American Horror Story: Apocalypse Recap: What a Lovely Way to Burn (Plus, Which Witch Returned?) https://briefnews.eu/american-horror-story-apocalypse-recap-what-a-lovely-way-to-burn-plus-which-witch-returned/ https://briefnews.eu/american-horror-story-apocalypse-recap-what-a-lovely-way-to-burn-plus-which-witch-returned/#respond Thu, 25 Oct 2018 12:56:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/american-horror-story-apocalypse-recap-what-a-lovely-way-to-burn-plus-which-witch-returned/ Armed with the knowledge that their new leader is, in fact, the Antichrist, the witches turned to a few old friends — and frenemies, naturally — on Wednesday’s episode of American Horror Story: Apocalypse.

Cordelia’s efforts took her to Dinah Stevens’ house, where a cool $ 100,000 earned her a visit with that shadowy slice of man meat known as Papa Legba. But the voodoo daddy wasn’t the only familiar face awaiting Cordelia — it turns out that Nan is now working as Papa’s little mama. “I really like hell,” she told Cordelia. “It’s fun! … I make trouble.” (God, I’ve missed Nan.)

The Supreme’s request was for Papa Legba to open the gates of the underworld long enough for her to lure Michael inside, trapping him forever. Simple enough. But in order for him to betray Satan’s spawn (aka the boss’ kid), he required a hell of a price: each and every one of her girls’ souls. Unwilling to sacrifice those she vowed to protect, Cordelia rejected his offer, returning to Miss Robichaux’s Academy defeated — not to mention, you know, she’s out a hundred grand.

American Horror Story: ApocalypseThe coven’s second (and far more successful) plan involved getting in touch with Joan Collins’ new character, witch-turned-movie star Bubbles McGee. Fortunately, her magical prowess proved far more impressive than her latest acting gig, a Christmas-themed horror movie in which she tells her dying husband, “I f–ked your business partner every year since 1972!” You know, just another classic holiday film for the family.

Anyhoo, Bubbles has the ability to read into a person’s very soul, to “detect the truth in any situation.” (She also, according to Myrtle, has the ability to go down like no other, but I don’t want to talk about that right now… or ever.) Myrtle put her newly acquired human lie detector to the test over dinner with the warlocks, during which Bubbles learned that they murdered John Henry — and the witches were next.

From there, it was only a matter of resurrecting John Henry (via Zoe and Mallory), kidnapping Ms. Mead (via Coco… though she was basically just a distraction), and catching Ariel and Baldwin in the act of plotting to eradicate the witches. What came next was a deeply satisfying triple execution, as the witches burned their enemies alive — and looked damn good while doing it.

Also worth discussing…

* I’m so unsure how I should feel about Coco. I’d like to believe that she’s more than just a “human Weight Watchers,” but I also distinctly recall Madison mocking her uselessness after waking her in Outpost 3. One thing’s for sure: I’m not unsure about how much I love Leslie Grossman’s performance in the role. Brava.

* While we’re talking about strange powers, what the actual fork did Mallory do to stop Coco from choking? (That’s rhetorical, of course. We all saw her unzip Coco’s neck and pull the damn Hostess snack from her throat. But how? And while we’re at it, what is Mallory, anyway?)

* Can we take a moment to appreciate all the faces in the promo for next week’s episode? I mean, Sandra Bernhard? Harriet Harris? Ryan Murphy is really bringing in all the queens this season.

Your thoughts on Wednesday’s Apocalypse? Any new theories as we — gasp! — begin to approach the end of the season? Whatever’s on your mind, drop it in a comment below.

The Lovely Bones – Royal & Derngate Northampton unti September 22 then touring until November 17. Tickets: 01604 624811 / royalandderngate.co.uk

When Alice Sebold’s novel The Lovely Bones was published in 2002, it was described as “the book of the decade”.

So no pressure on Bryony Lavery in dramatising it for the stage.

Told entirely from the celestial vantage point of Pennsylvania teenager Susie Salmon who has been raped, killed and dismembered, it is a moving and uplifting account of her attempts to guide her family to her murderer while watching in envy as their lives continue without her.

Director Melly Still handles the distilled narrative with great skill, assisted by Ana Inés Jabares-Pita’s stunning set design.

A huge angled mirror above the stage reflects the action beneath, suggesting a heavenly dimension, and figures emerge out of darkness at the rear of the stage.

As Susie (Charlotte Beaumont) mingles unseen and unheard with the living, she fills in the details of her story with the lively observation of a child, often perplexed by the behaviour of her parents and siblings.

And when asked by her heavenly chaperone (Bhawna Bhawsar) what she wants, Susie replies: “I want to be unraped and unkilled.”

The sense of mystery and a parallel realm is conveyed by a square of salt laid out at the start, a boundary through which ghosts cannot pass.

The killer’s other victims are represented by little dresses animated by the cast in a scene that is both moving and horrifying.

But if it all sounds relentlessly grim, I assure you that it is not. The sense of life, even after death, pervades the play like perfume.

There are humorous sequences threaded through like family dog Holiday leading a dance of local dogs, played by the cast, in search of Susie’s body.

There is lovely work from a superb cast including Emily Bevan as Susie’s troubled mother, Jack Sandle as her obsessive father and Ayoola Smart as her sister.

The ending is as satisfying and moving as it is unexpected. Prepare to be amazed.

Eastern Star ****Tara Theatre until September 29. Tickets: 020 8333 4457

When BBC cub reporter Christopher Gunness was sent to Burma (now Myanmar) to investigate the military junta, he unwittingly helped kickstart the student revolution of 1988.

Lawyer U Nay Min (David Yip) was chief architect of the revolution which was fuelled by the information and misinformation which he fed to Gunness.

However, when the protests were quashed by the military, Nay Min spent 16 years in prison while Gunness (Michael Lumsden) went on to a career in the United Nations. Guy Slater’s play details their fraught meeting decades later as old wounds reopen and bleed all over the stage.

Yip and Lumsden are superb as they circle each other, drawing out a litany of betrayal and stupidity that wrecked one man’s life and propelled the other to success.

The play may lack dramatic heft but it offers an enlightening account of a period of history that opened the door for the rise of Aung San Suu Kyi.

It’s a small but well-formed play about Gunness’s guilt over his action – and inaction – concerning an issue of international import whose aftershocks are still being felt today.

The moral is: when in doubt, trust your conscience, not your government.

The Prisoner National Theatre until October 4. Tickets: 020 7452 3000

The Prisoner is a short, sparse and enigmatic parable from great British theatre director Peter Brook.

A man (Hiran Abeysekera) is condemned to 20 years of isolation on a hill to “repair” himself. His crime is patricide for which he has already suffered some form of punishment.

The small cast create their own sound effects and convey underwritten characters as well as they can. But the stripped-down style fails to achieve the dramatic escalation of Samuel Beckett’s dramas to which it assuredly aspires.

Latest Audi A6 Avant is a lovely piece of forbidden fruit https://briefnews.eu/latest-audi-a6-avant-is-a-lovely-piece-of-forbidden-fruit/ https://briefnews.eu/latest-audi-a6-avant-is-a-lovely-piece-of-forbidden-fruit/#respond Wed, 11 Apr 2018 01:13:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/latest-audi-a6-avant-is-a-lovely-piece-of-forbidden-fruit/

We’d love to tell you that the pretty blue wagon just above is coming soon to the United States, but we can’t. Because the next-generation Audi A6 Avant probably isn’t coming to the United States at all. Here in the States we get the seductively attractive A5 and S5 Sportback, and the swoopy A7, S7, and RS 7 hatchbacks instead of the traditional A6 wagon. We’re not going to complain (much), because we do love the aforementioned Audis, but we’ll still grumble just a little bit over the lost practicality of the forbidden Avant.

Basically, what we have here is a station wagon-enhanced Audi A6. It keeps the same basic driving dynamics of its sedan-shaped sibling, but instead of a trunk, it boasts 20 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, or as much as 58.3 cu-ft with the seats folded flat, accessed via a hatch that’s 3.5 feet wide. That’ll be handy for daytrips with the family, or for a long weekend away for two. A 10.1-inch MMI infotainment screen, haptic-enabled touch-sensitive buttons on the center stack, and 12.1-inch Virtual Cockpit gauge cluster keep things looking super modern inside.

Audi isn’t saying much about powertrain options just yet, except that all versions will be equipped with a mild-hybrid belt alternator starter system relying on a 48-volt electrical system. Depending on trim levels and options, all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering pair with steel-spring or air suspension setups. Suffice it to say, buyers won’t be complaining over a lack of configurations for the A6 Avant.

One thing Audi has neither confirmed nor denied is an Allroad version of the A6 Avant. If such a beast is in the works, there’s a reasonable chance it could come to the States. After all, Audi already sells the A4 Allroad in America, Mercedes offers an all-wheel-drive E-Class wagon, and the Volvo V90 Cross Country could use some competition. Still, we’re not holding our breath.

Alpine A110 looks lovely with new colors, wheels, trim levels https://briefnews.eu/alpine-a110-looks-lovely-with-new-colors-wheels-trim-levels/ https://briefnews.eu/alpine-a110-looks-lovely-with-new-colors-wheels-trim-levels/#respond Tue, 27 Feb 2018 21:35:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alpine-a110-looks-lovely-with-new-colors-wheels-trim-levels/

We were heartbroken to learn that Alpine wouldn’t be offering any A110s in the United States, left as we are lusting for the blue sports coupe from a afar. Now we can lust for it in multiple colors and variants. Alpine has announced that the A110 will now be available in two trim levels, in a (small) selection of colors, and with multiple wheel types.

The two trim levels include Pure, which doesn’t come with any special extras and is equipped similarly to the first run of 1,955 Premiere Edition models, and Légende, which adds some comfort and convenience features. Among the equipment included on Légende models are leather-upholstered six-way adjustable seats and carbon fiber interior trim.

The A110 will also now be available in three colors including the blue hue of the Premiere Edition, a white paint like the concept, and a new graphite gray metallic. The white and gray colors are displayed above, and the gray car also exhibits some ultra-cool retro-style wheels that are new to the model. Those wheels are spun by the same 249-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and 7-speed dual-clutch transmission as the Premiere Edition. Pricing will be announced later this week, but for us in America, it doesn’t matter because we still can’t have it.

Jordan Golson

It’s been quite an unexpected decade at Tesla. In 2007, if you said that the EV company would release an all-electric sedan that became one of the fastest accelerating vehicles of all time and sold tens of thousands of units with numerous hardware and software improvements along the way, you’d have been sent to the loony bin. And if you then predicted the company would release an all-electric SUV that would do the same and develop and release (sort of) an affordable, stylish, and long-range EV… well, maybe you’d have been mistaken for a member of the Musk family.

And yet, Elon Musk and Tesla have done all those things with the Model S, Model X, and Model 3. The company has gone further with things like the Gigafactory; home, commercial, and utility battery products; and previews of the new Tesla Roadster and Tesla Semi, too. To be sure, Musk has made a lot of ambitious promises and really missed a lot of deadlines over the years—but people who have bet against Tesla over have lost a lot of money. (Tesla’s stock price is up almost 1700 percent since its June 2010 IPO, fyi.)

View of PenangPH

The colourful Kek Lok Si Buddhist temple near Georgetown

“Penang…” they’ll say, eyes taking on a dreamy, far-away quality, “…oh, the food!”

Even in a country that takes its scoff seriously – and boasts one of the most delicious and varied cuisines in South-East Asia – this little island off the north-west coast occupies a special place in their hearts, and stomachs.

Luckily, you don’t have to go far to find out why.

Just a 50-minute hop by air from KL, Penang has been called Malaysia in miniature.

In such surroundings, days on end can pass in blissful, pampered comfort without any effort whatsoever on your part

Rich in history and steeped in tradition, the island is lush and beautiful, its beaches stunning, the people warm and welcoming, and strollable capital Georgetown is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

And, yes, there’s the food.

It is impossible to walk more than a few yards in any direction on Penang without coming across people eating: at roadside stalls, in aged eateries or smart new caf©s, at one of the island’s many food courts, or even while lounging on one of the island’s ubiquitous motor scooters.

When they’re not eating, it seems, they’re talking about eating.

Street food cooked by women in PenangPH

The astonishing food is one of the best reasons to visit the island of Penang

Not that filling your face 24/7 is the only thing to do here, far from it.

While Georgetown’s charms are many and seductive, after a few days in bustling Kuala Lumpur I was looking forward to a relaxing few days at one of Penang’s popular beach resorts, of which Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa is the undisputed capo di tutti capi.

Many hotels strive to be a home away from home, but few succeed as comprehensively as the beautiful Rasa Sayang, occupying as it does prime position on the beachside of favourite tourist resort Batu Ferringhi.

Spend more than a couple of days here and you’ll become used to the sight of guests arriving and being greeted like the old friends they often are by the superlative staff, or bidding a near-tearful farewell to their hosts, invariably with the closing line: “See you next year.”

In an industry that thrives on repeat business, this Shangri-La does very well indeed, it appears.

Indeed, they tell of one regular who, now in her mid-80s, reckons she has spent a total of 12 years there since she retired.

Guests have a choice of accommodation.

The Garden Wing, while upscale, combines comfort and style with a family-friendly feeling, while the air in the Rasa Wing is one of languid sophistication and elegance. The rooms are vast, comfortable and sumptuously equipped, featuring balconies with tropical views and beds that invite a blissful night’s sleep.

Street art in PenangPH

Georgetown’s Street Art attracts visitors from around the world

It’s easier to list the facilities that aren’t on offer than those that are, ie: none.

In addition, Rasa Wing guests can enjoy an a la carte breakfast, complimentary soft drinks and refreshments, their own swimming pool, afternoon tea in the Rasa Lounge and – best of all – drinks and pre-dinner canapés in the evening.

So good are these that they prompt, while not an unseemly rush, early arrival and a distinct air of anticipation.

The restful surroundings are undoubtedly helped by the staff who have the mystical skill of being nigh-on invisible most of the time yet somehow immediately on hand should you even think about needing something.

In such surroundings, days on end can pass in blissful, pampered comfort without any effort whatsoever on your part.

Which is useful, because Batu Ferringhi is… well, let’s call it sleepy.

Street market in Kuala LumpurGETTY

View of a Malaysian street market at night

True, you can make an expedition to nearby attractions such as the Butterfly Farm or Penang War Museum, take the hotel’s regular shuttle bus into Georgetown to do some sightseeing, or stroll along the town’s main drag; perhaps enjoying a relaxing foot massage or a splendid rendang curry at the popular and friendly Living Room Café & Restaurant.

Otherwise, there’s not a great deal to drag you from the side of the pool while smiling staff bring you a succession of ice-cold drinks.

By night, however, it’s a different matter entirely. As dusk falls, stallholders begin setting out their wares for a huge night market that stretches all the way from the Rasa Sayang to the Hard Rock, two kilometres down the road.

It’s the town’s main tourist attraction and, every night of the week, draws crowds eager to browse the selection of locally made crafts, souvenirs and, of course, the always popular “genuine fake” watches, handbags, sports shirts and a seemingly infinite choice of footwear.

This being Penang, they also come to eat. All the hotels and resorts that hug the coast have restaurants and bars open to the public but the locals – who know a thing or two about this stuff – head for the Long Beach Food Court.

Pedicab in GeorgetownGETTY

Cosy and romantic pedicabs can be find easily in Georgetown

It’s a typically simple affair but for both the variety on offer, and the quality of the food, it is a must-visit in Batu Ferringhi.

Just pick a table, browse the many stalls, pick out what you want and tell them your table number.

Soon you could enjoying delicious wontons, noodles, curry – Indian and Thai – and the local speciality, chee cheong fun, while roaming waitresses take your order for a large, cold Tiger Beer.

Press on, and you’ll find doorways and alleys that seemed entirely anonymous by day now lead to a succession of bars and cafés catering to every taste, such as the laid back and friendly Bora Bora by Sunset.

Stroll, browse, eat and drink then stroll, bargain and buy… maybe eat and drink some more – It’s the perfect end to a glorious day in Batu Ferringhi.

Skyline of Kuala LumpurGETTY

Combine your stay in Penang with a city break in Kuala Lumpur

Back at the resort, there’s plenty to keep you occupied until night falls.

As well as the stunning CHI Spa, there’s a nine-hole, Par-3 pitch-and-putt golf course, tennis courts, table tennis, Tai Chi and beach volleyball.

If all that sounds a little too energetic then you can simply loll by the pool or in the manicured gardens, or take the gentlest of ambles along the golden beach.

However, you can’t visit Penang without seeing Georgetown, and the simplest way is to board the hotel’s luxurious, air-conditioned shuttle bus which drops you off at sister hotel, the Jen, in the heart of the capital.

From here, it’s just a short walk to one of the city’s most popular attractions, the street art.

These sculptures and paintings have turned the streets of the Old Town into a living gallery.

The best known are the personal, sometimes odd, but always affecting, murals by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic, whose work – centred around Armenia Street – is guaranteed to make you smile.

Georgetown is, simply, a delightful city in which to wander around.

View of the harbour of GeorgetownGETTY

View of the harbour of Georgetown

The air is distinctly one of shabby chic, but it has a style and vitality all of its own, from the colourful stores of Little India to the colourful Kek Lok Si Temple and historic Fort Cornwallis.

It’s a joy to stroll the narrow streets – or, if you get weary, hire a rickshaw for a more leisurely tour – and while away some time in a local coffee shop or café.

There’s no shortage of quality restaurants in the capital but the local cuisine is best experienced through the street food.

New Lane Hawker Centre on Lorong Baru has many fans.

Streets of Old GeorgetownPH

Take it easy with a scenic trickshaw ride through the streets of Old Georgetown

Closed to traffic in the evenings, it soon fills ups with locals eating at plastic tables and chairs in front of their favourite stalls, selling delights such as the famous char kway teow, or stir-fried flat rice noodles.

Slap in the centre of town you’ll find Red Garden Food Paradise and an astonishing choice of Chinese, Indian, Malaysian and even Japanese and Korean Food.

Always bustling it still manages to find room for all comers who tuck into tender and tasty satay, roast duck or Mee Goreng, enjoying the occasional live acts as the beer girls circulate with their icy buckets of Tiger and Asahi.

Just to add further to the enjoyment, it won’t cost you much either.

Georgetown enjoys a lively bar scene so, afterwards, head for Jalan Penang and enjoy a cocktail or a cold one in a lively atmosphere before hailing a cab back to Batu Ferringhi.

While you could easily spend a whole, delightful fortnight on Penang, it’s best combined with a stay in Kuala Lumpur – to which most long-haul flights from the UK connect – and where the same hotel group have two further quality properties: the Shangri-La and Traders, both ideally situated in the commercial and tourist centre of the Golden Triangle.

Malaysia has so much to offer: it’s culturally fascinating, English is widely spoken, it’s extraordinarily good value, the people are warm and welcoming, the history fascinating and… oh, yes – the food isn’t half bad.

Washington (AFP) – US President Donald Trump returns to Washington Sunday after a brief overseas respite, facing an enduring and intensifying storm over his campaign’s contacts with Russia.

During two pomp-filled days in Paris and another two playing maitre d’ to professional female golfers driving, chipping and putting their way around his Bedminster course in New Jersey, Trump was in his element.

In the French capital, Trump played the role of honored guest, wooed by new President Emmanuel Macron who was determined to reassert France’s importance on the world stage.

The visit seemed — and indeed was — tailor made for Trump.

It was the presidency as he would no doubt like it, ceremonial, aggrandizing and shorn of its onerous security briefings and tedious policy debates.

Trump even got to attend a military parade of the sort he is rumored to have wanted for his own inauguration.

For a few days, the angry tweets and the rants against the media were largely gone.

In their place, more than a dozen effusive electronic missives that were part tourist postcard, part thank-you note to a cherished host.

Trump variously thanked Macron “for the beautiful welcome ceremony,” for a “great evening” dining at the Eiffel Tower” and for “great conversations.”

“It was a great honor to represent the United States at the magnificent #BastilleDay parade. Congratulations President @EmmanuelMacron!” Trump wrote in one tweet.

Trump’s staff appeared to welcome the respite just as much as their boss, stealing away a few minutes for a late-night Parisian cocktail or Croque Monsieur.

But for staff, the release was tinged with a sense of exhaustion. The last few grueling weeks have seen them fly the president from Washington to Poland to Germany, back to Washington, on to Paris and then to Bedminster.

All the while, aides like chief of staff Reince Priebus have been chained to their phone trying to minimize the damage from new scandals at the same time as manage the passage of major legislation.

Simultaneous travel, scandal and lawmaking would be a massive challenge for even the most efficient White House, much less for Trump’s understaffed, chaotic, besieged and backstabbing administration.

Their return to the “swamp” — as Trump’s camp nicknames the US capital — is unlikely to bring much comfort.

There are lots of questions about Russia at home

In Washington, the Trump administration faces a fresh string of questions about contacts with a Russian lawyer and lobbyist, further raising the stakes in the federal investigation into whether Trump’s team colluded with Russia to tilt last year’s election.

Trump and most of his top associates — from his son Donald Jr to son-in-law and close aide Jared Kushner — have retained hard-charging defense lawyers.

The rolling storms — like the Jupiter tempest captured this week — have made life difficult on the face of planet Trump, without fundamentally altering its trajectory.

While investigations are sucking up vital oxygen in Congress, and lawmakers get asked about little else, there is so far little sign Russiagate is costing Trump votes.

His allies in Congress appear to be edging closer to repealing and replacing healthcare reform that was the signature legislative achievement of Barack Obama’s presidency.

On Saturday Trump posted on Twitter a video in which he praised the Republican bill while denouncing Obamacare.

“I am pleased to report that we are very, very close to ending this healthcare nightmare. We are so close,” he vowed.

Trump’s popularity has settled at around 39%, according to opinion polls.

“About four in 10 Americans approve of the job Donald Trump is doing as president,” said Gallup analysts. “That figure has not changed materially over the past four months.”

But a failure to pass healthcare reform, tax reform or a massive infrastructure spending could prove a devastating blow, weakening so-far solid support among Republicans.

There are early signs that support may be ebbing.

Even some leading voices at Fox News, the cable network popular with conservatives which has been in lock-step with the administration, have expressed dissent about the administration’s shifting explanations on Russia.

The last six months have seen Trump aides shift from denying any contact with Russians to dramatically raising the bar for censure-worthy behavior.

In light of Trump Jr’s bombshell admission he met a Russian lawyer last year in a bid to get dirt on his father’s Democrat rival Hillary Clinton, top aide Kellyanne Conway seemed to dramatically shift the goalposts.

Having once denied that any meetings took place, she recently complained that the standard should be “hard evidence of systemic, sustained furtive collusion.”

That type of response prompted Fox anchor Shepard Smith to accuse the administration of “mind-boggling deception.”

“Why all these lies? Why is it lie after lie after lie?” he asked.

If Trump’s legislative agenda stalls and his core support begins to ebb, it will not only be a rough homecoming, but a hot, difficult summer ahead.
