Patricia Loud, best known as the matriarch from the PBS docuseries An American Family, died Sunday. She was 94. The news was confirmed by her family on their shared Facebook page. “With inconsolable sorrow, we are sad to share the news with friends and family that on Sunday, January 10 at 1:55pm PT, Pat Loud passed away peacefully in her sleep of natural causes,” the Loud family wrote. “She was snuggled up safe in her comfy home, attended by loving children Michele, Delilah, Kevin and Grant.” Loud starred in the 1973 television documentary created by Craig Gilbert that aired from January to March of that year. An American Family is viewed by some as the first American reality TV series. The show followed Loud, her husband, Bill, and their five children throughout their daily lives in Santa Barbara, Calif., documenting the separation and eventual divorce of Loud and her husband, as well as the coming out of their late son, Lance. During her time on the series, Loud made guest appearances on The Dick Cavett Show and The Mike Douglas Show, after the series had taken off and found its audience. “Pat Loud was a fierce, inflexible, forthright matriarch and loyal champion of outsiders and iconoclasts,” the Loud family continued in their Facebook post. “Her door was never locked and there was always room at her table. Never one for regrets or reflection, she moved forward in life with enthusiasm and courage.” Loud is survived by her four children. There’s a moment in the fourth of episode of Netflix’s Daybreak when a barely recognizable Krysta Rodriguez clutches an enormous bowl of maggots, assigns a name to each individual squirmer, then proceeds to devour them all with a sickening grin on her gross (sorry!) face. Sure, it sounds like the stuff of nightmares — and you’re not wrong about that — but it’s really just another day in the life of Ms. Crumble, a high school science teacher-turned-witch trying to make sense of a new, post-apocalyptic world where most of the adult population has been transformed into zombie-like creatures known as “Ghoulies.” “When we meet her, she seems like a crazy person on the surface,” Rodriguez admits. “Just a wackadoodle nut bag. But as we come to realize, there’s actually a tragic situation happening here. She’s dealing with a traumatic brain injury from an atomic bomb, while also becoming part Ghoulie. She’s fighting this metamorphosis happening inside her body that’s telling her to eat people, as well as the part of her brain that’s desperately trying to be who she was before.” Rodriguez — previously seen on shows like Smash and Trial & Error, as well as Broadway musicals like Spring Awakening and The Addams Family — admits that Ms. Crumble is the most original role she’s ever read, to the point where her first thought was, “OK, what am I going to do with this gal?” Fortunately, she says she “found a good balance” between the character’s outer eccentricity and inner turmoil. Below, Rodriguez tells TVLine about the process of bringing this instantly unforgettable character to life, including the moment she knew that it was what she’d been waiting for her entire career. TVLINE | There’s also the part where Josh has to reach down into your mouth, but I guess that was mostly CGI? TVLINE | And then there’s Ms. Crumble’s teeth. Did those take some getting used to? TVLINE | OK, I’ve asked enough about her physical appearance. What do you love about playing Ms. Crumble and the journey she’s on? Are you enjoying Daybreak? Drop a comment with your thoughts on Netflix’s apocalyptic romp below.

TVLINE | Let’s start with a fun one: What would you say is the grossest thing you had to do as Ms. Crumble?
You’d think it was eating the maggots, but really, the grossest thing was having to look at [Josh’s severed] finger. Stuff that’s hyperrealistic is hard to get my brain around. I also had to eat a lot of ketchup, and let me tell you, ketchup by itself is disgusting. It needs salt and fries and grease. And I had to eat packets of it.
It’s actually not all CGI. They took a mold of my face and made it into a puppet, so it’s a practical piece. The tongue moves, the mouth opens and it was my face. It’s horrifying. It took me so my surprise. I felt like I was standing next to my own dead body. So Josh put his hand down the puppet, and I had to stand next to him making gurgling noises.
In the first and second episodes, we were painting the teeth. Between every scene, I would hold up a fan, they’d pour the crap into my mouth and they’d a paintbrush to paint it onto my teeth. We had to do that probably 45 times a day, which was terrible. And I was swallowing it. It’s mint-flavored, but you just don’t want that in your gut. By the third or fourth episode, they made me a tray of painted teeth. It was like Invisalign. It was great.
In the pre-apocalypse, she was a woman who didn’t get her say. And in the apocalypse, she gets to be everything. She doesn’t have to look or be a certain way. She can scream and yell and fight — it’s the person she never got to be before. In that way, it was very freeing.
TVLINE | She also seems to forge a special connection with Angelica. Ms. Crumble, at times, feels like the mother figure she never had. It really hit me during that scene in Episode 4, when she tells Angelica, “Let’s be monsters.”
There’s this really beautiful, nurturing relationship between them, and that scene hit me. I’ve played a lot of characters, and I felt like I was getting stuck in a place where I was playing the smartest woman in the room who just rolled her eyes at the men who were doing silly things. My function was always to be the girl to the boy, and I was getting frustrated with that. I never imagined that this apocalypse show about high school kids would be the show that broke that streak in such a way. When I was reading [Episode 4], I was like, “Here we go with a makeover story. Let’s not let the witch be who she is, let’s make sure she gets a makeover.” All these other people are fighting, and here we are stuck in the mall getting makeovers. Then I actually read the scene… and I burst into tears. This is what I’ve been waiting for my whole career, this moment where I get to say, “F–k that. Let’s be loud.” And it’s what I want to tell the 12-year-olds in the world. Get loud, get dirty and play hard.

WASHINGTON (AP) — It can be rowdy and even rude at times. But the media “spray” — shouted questions by the White House press corps to the president — is a necessary part of holding the nation’s top public official to account.
On Wednesday, White House aides banned CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins for shouting questions Trump did not like, setting off a national debate about how the press does its job.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, one of the breakout films was the charming father daughter dramedy Hearts Beat Loud. The film sees Nick Offerman as Frank, a widower preparing to close down his record shop and send his daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons) off to med school across the country. In one final attempt to spark a bit more of a connection with his daughter, Frank convinces her to partake in a jam session. Their collaboration results in some outstanding original tunes that get them a surprising amount of attention online. Now you can partake in the buzz by listening to the title track from the film.
This is the first song Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons create together in the movie. It becomes a surprising success when it ends up on an indie playlist on Spotify, and Offerman becomes energized to turn them into a musical sensation called “We’re Not a Band,” inspired by his daughter’s reluctance to participate. You can watch the trailer over here to find out more about the movie.
The title song plays several times throughout Hearts Beat Loud, though not quite as excessively as That Thing You Do! from the movie of the same name. Thankfully, there are a few other original songs written by musician Keegan DeWitt, which are also performed by Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons in the movie, the latter proving that someone needs to cast her in a movie musical as soon as possible.
Here are the rest of the tracks on the soundtrack, including the score, also composed by DeWitt:
1. Hearts Beat Loud – Keegan DeWitt & Kiersey Clemons (3:18)
2. Blink (One Million Miles) – Keegan DeWitt & Kiersey Clemons (4:07)
3. Everything Must Go – Keegan DeWitt, Nick Offerman & Kiersey Clemons (3:09)
4. Red Hook (2:07)
5. We’re Not a Band (2:14)
6. Shut Your Eyes – Keegan DeWitt & Nick Offerman (2:36)
7. Hearts Beat Loud (Ballad) – Keegan DeWitt & Kiersey Clemons (4:13)
8. Conundrums (1:46)
9. Your Best American Girl – Mitski (3:33)
10. The Past (2:05)
11. Help Wanted (2:11)
12. What If… (2:23)
13. Everything Must Go (Frank Collage) (3:34)
Aside from the incredible tunes, Hearts Beat Loud is also a touching, charming indie that is worth seeing in between all the blockbuster noise this summer. Written and directed by Brett Haley, it’s a great movie for fathers and daughters to see, but it’s the kind of story anyone can enjoy and that soundtrack will have you tapping your toes the whole way through.
In the hip Brooklyn neighborhood of Red Hook, single dad and record store owner Frank (Nick Offerman) is preparing to send his hard-working daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons) off to college, while being forced to close his vintage shop. Hoping to stay connected through their shared musical passions, Frank urges Sam to turn their weekly “jam sesh” into a father-daughter live act. After their first song becomes an Internet breakout, the two embark on a journey of love, growing up and musical discovery.
Hearts Beat Loud starts hitting theaters on June 8, 2018 and the soundtrack will be available the same day.

At this point, you know what to expect in a Dwayne Johnson movie. Big explosions, even bigger pecs, and lots of testosterone-fuled male posturing — probably in the jungle, and probably while the Rock is wearing the same khaki shirt he’s dragged across five movie sets.
Johnson has nailed a type, and he’s got an audience willing to pay top dollar to see him to it again. And from the looks of Rampage, it’s very much the same action-packed blockbuster we expect to see from Johnson. But that doesn’t mean it’s not good.
Below, see the Rampage early buzz.
Rampage held its world premiere in Los Angeles on April 4, with critics and fans alike flocking to the adaptation of the popular ’80s arcade game. Its simple, ridiculous premise raised quite a few eyebrows, but after the critical and commercial success of last year’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, critics seem willing to give Rampage a chance.
The early social media reactions were mixed, with many critics acknowledging that this movie is loud and dumb — but praising it for knowing exactly what it is. /Film’s Peter Sciretta and Ben Pearson were two of the critics at the premiere who had a somewhat muted response to the film.
#Rampage certainly doesn’t break the video game movie curse and has some of the worst villains I’ve seen on screen this year (and I saw Ready Player One) but it’s enjoyable in a disposable sense. I cared more about the Rock/ape relationship than I did the city smashing.
— Peter Sciretta (@slashfilm) April 5, 2018
#Rampage: This movie is exactly what you think it's going to be. Afterward, a guy near me said to his friend, "That was great. You didn't have to think AT ALL!"
— Ben Pearson (@benpears) April 5, 2018
But reactions ran the gamut. A few critics raved about its overblown premise and escalating action, while others said Rampage had lots of heart.
RAMPAGE is the ultimate guilty pleasure. Brad Peyton has created a big budget B movie & Dwayne Johnson delivers his most outrageous performance to date. #Rampage is the ultimate monster movie and is non-stop campy fun. Did I mention that Dwayne Johnson fights a giant flying wolf? pic.twitter.com/0aFNqnxRl7
— Scott Menzel (@TheOtherScottM) April 5, 2018
#RampageMovie knows exactly what it is and makes no bones about it. Stupid stupid fun, guys. Have some drinks and go see it next week when it comes out. Super entertaining ??@rampagethemovie
— Marissa Monticolo (@MMonticolo) April 5, 2018
RAMPAGE was a mindless, popcorn action flick, in all the best ways. the VFX looked great, and watching the creatures destroy a full city was pretty awesome. Jeffery Dean Morgan steals the movie, only negative I have is the villain is a little to over the top.
— Skyler Shuler (@Skylerhxc) April 5, 2018
Rampage is ridiculous and fun!
It's a big movie, kind of like Transformers, back in the days when they were pretty good, but with giant monsters.
Rampage embraces what it is visciously well, so that @TheRock and @JDMorgan can be epic on screen! Buckle up. pic.twitter.com/NhtyeuY3eS
— Brandon Davis (@BrandonDavisBD) April 5, 2018
Rampage is big, loud and fun as hell. Especially touching to see the Harambe in memoriam card during the closing credits. @TheRock’s got another massive hit on his hands! #RampageMovie
— Mr. Ræger (@S_Weinstein95) April 5, 2018
Will #Rampage be eligible for the #Oscars? @TheRock ?
Asking for a friend…— Jim the Movie Man (@MovieNonExpert) April 5, 2018
As an animal lover, it’s hard not to vibe with #RampageMovie’s sweet relationship between @TheRock & gorilla George. It’s the driving force of the action & its beating heart.
— Courtney Howard (@Lulamaybelle) April 5, 2018
Initial thoughts on #RampageMovie
– It delivers exactly what you want from a movie featuring @TheRock
– It finally answers the question “What if Negan was actually the good guy in #TheWalkingDead”
— MoviePass Freaks (@MoviePassFreaks) April 5, 2018
Rampage is directed by Brad Peyton and stars Johnson, Naomie Harris, Malin Åkerman, Joe Manganiello, Jake Lacy, Marley Shelton, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
Rampage hits theaters on April 13, 2018.
Primatologist Davis Okoye shares an unshakable bond with George, an extraordinarily intelligent, silverback gorilla that’s been in his care since birth. When a rogue genetic experiment goes wrong, it causes George, a wolf and a reptile to grow to a monstrous size. As the mutated beasts embark on a path of destruction, Okoye teams up with a discredited genetic engineer and the military to secure an antidote and prevent a global catastrophe.

Residents across Oklahoma and Texas were jostled from their daily routines after hearing a loud boom Tuesday afternoon. Many were left scratching their heads and watching the skies for the source of the explosive phenomenon.
While the US Geological Survey has not reported any earthquakes in the region, the National Weather Services in Norman, Oklahoma has said it is possible that the deafening boom was the result of “a ‘bolide’ or the breaking up of a meteor.”
Reports of a ‘shaking boom’ across central Oklahoma shortly after 4 pm today. Based on visual reports of meteor streaks in Oklahoma and Texas, and no earthquake reports from the USGS, it is possible the region experienced a ‘bolide’ or the breaking up of a meteor.
— NWS Norman (@NWSNorman) March 13, 2018
A flurry of baffled residents shared their comments online, trying to make sense of the afternoon shocker. One nearby resident offered his account of the mysterious heavenly “green light” he spotted that afternoon.
“Meteor flew over Oklahoma City today at about 16:20, with a sonic boom and some shaking in nearby Norman! Was beautiful green and orange streak in the daylight,” he tweeted.

Chief Meteorologist for KFOR-TV OKC Mike Morgan was completely befuddled by the extraterrestrial visitor and asked others to clarify.
So it’s 5:45PM on Tuesday in Oklahoma and we are getting quite a few suspected Meteor “Boom” reports at about 520PM. Y’all got any more info. on this out there folks??
— Mike Morgan (@MikeMorganKFOR) March 13, 2018
One resident’s speculation revolved around reports that China’s first space observation station was due to fall into Earth’s orbit at any moment.
“I was wondering if the meteor reports in North Texas and Oklahoma were actually Tiangong-1, but it looks like we’re still a week or so from that possibly happening,” he said.

Oklahoma is no stranger to unexplained booms, which have been attributed to an assortment of different causes. Last year, Midwest City residents were perplexed by large underground booms comparable to underground explosions, one witness stated.
“It turns out, this is a really neat deal. It has to do with water underground,” said Meteorologist John Slater. “With these cold fronts coming through, the water just freezes rapidly. And as it turns out, when it freezes, it expands.”
On January 25, 2014, News On 6 speculated that F-16 fighter jets from the 138th Fighter Wing division in Tulsa peppered the area with sonic booms powerful enough to rattle furniture and windows. However, the cause of the disturbances still remains a mystery.
Another shockwave dubbed the “Bama Boom” was felt across cities in Alabama on November 14, 2017. No explanation was offered other than either a hypersonic aircraft or meteorite shower.
Re: loud boom heard: we do not see anything indicating large fire/smoke on radar or satellite; nothing on USGS indicating an earthquake. We don’t have an answer, and can only hypothesize with you. 1) sonic boom from aircraft; 2) meteorite w/ current Leonid shower?
— NWS Birmingham (@NWSBirmingham) November 14, 2017
Were they underground nuclear tests? Fracking adventures in the Midwest? No one will ever know.

Movies about fractured families are easy to come by at the Sundance Film Festival, so it takes something special to make them stand out. In the case of Hearts Beat Loud from writer/director Brett Haley (The Hero, I’ll See You in My Dreams), the special ingredient comes in the form of Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons as a father and daughter who have had trouble connecting since the death of his wife and find a connection by forming a band with some real potential. Not only is this movie sweet as hell, but it brings your new favorite band to the table with a soundtrack full of catchy original songs.
Hearts Beat Loud follows Nick Offerman as a single father named Frank who is preparing to send his daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons of Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising) off to the pre-med program at UCLA. Frank is losing his daughter to a college across the country, his mother (Blythe Danner) is slowly losing her memory, and he’s also losing his business, a shop called Red Hook Records, where he’s sold vinyl for 17 years. That might sound like the making of a depressing indie, but trust me, this movie is bright, uplifting, charming and full of love.
Frank goes out of his way to hang out with Sam by having a weekly jam session in his makeshift music studio. He was once a thriving musician with a wife who could sing like an angel, but nothing substantial ever came from it. Still, he’s never lost his love for music, and he loves rocking out with his daughter. She’s become more reluctant to play with him as she’s started to focus on her academic career more, but Frank persists, and that’s good for us, because it means we get to hear the wonderful tunes they write together.
During this jam session, the two end up co-writing a new song based on some fragments of music and lyrics that Sam has been playing around with. After playing around with some instrumentals and recording all the various parts of the song, they have the titular tune, “Hearts Beat Loud.” It’s a catchy indie rock song infusing electronic elements with old school instrumentals, and you won’t be able to get it out of your head. Frank certainly can’t, because he’s desperate to form a real band with Sam. She’s reluctant at first, telling her father, “We’re not a band.” And that sounds like a pretty good band name to Frank.
Initially, Hearts Beat Loud seems to be walking a similar path as That Thing You Do! as the track “Hearts Beat Loud” ends up on a popular indie playlist on Spotify after Frank uploades the finished product to the streaming service. Frank wants to keep the band going, so he picks up some new equipment that he can’t really afford, and aims to write some new songs with Sam with the hopes of playing The Mercury Lounge and kicking off a hopeful new career. But this isn’t a story about finding fame. It’s a story about a father and daughter staying connected as they get closer to being farther apart than ever before. The music is just a way to bring them closer together.
This movie is what one might consider a Sundance cliche, but it’s executed so earnestly and lovingly thanks to the performances and musical stylings of Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons. Not only does Offerman rock on the guitar, but Clemons has some beautiful pipes that I’d like to see her stretch even more in a musical. The duo brings the original songs written by Keegan DeWitt to life effortlessly, and you’ll be nodding your head, tapping your foot and smiling ear-to-ear as the duo rocks all throughout the film. Adding to the delight of this movie are Toni Collette as Frank’s landlord and possible love interest, and Ted Danson as Dave, Frank’s bar-owning, weed-smoking, laid back best friend.
Nick Offerman has never been better on film. As Frank, he brings a gentle gruffness to fatherhood, and there’s simply nothing better than Offerman getting gleefully excited about something, like when he hears “Hearts Beat Loud” playing by chance in a local coffee shop. Meanwhile, Clemons proves that she needs to be getting more work across the board as a character whose mixed race and sexuality are never used as a plot device, but merely something that is part of her everyday life.
The only shortcoming of this movie might be shortchanging Blythe Danner’s role in the film. There’s an attempt at creating an emotional subplot for her character’s struggle with Alzheimer’s, but there’s not nearly enough to connect with for it to make any significant impact. Danner gets one meaningful scene with Sam at a key moment in the movie, but even so, her presence feels contrived and superfluous.
Even so, Hearts Beat Loud is a feel-good, crowd-pleasing spark of life. Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons make for a wonderful musical group, but more importantly, they are a delightful father and daughter duo. The movie has endless charm and is the kind of movie every parent will want to see with their older kids.
/Film Rating: 8 out of 10

Residents in several cities across Michigan reported seeing a bright and colorful flash travel through the sky before hearing a loud boom. The US Department of Homeland Security confirmed that it was a meteor fireball.
Numerous videos recorded by security cameras and dashcams in the Metro-Detroit area and surrounding cities Tuesday night show a flash of bright light zooming across the sky, instantly turning night into day for an instant.
Several Michigan residents took to social media to say they heard a loud sound after the flash of light. Many speculated that the light and sound were caused by a meteor, while others said that it could be something more mysterious.
Just saw a meteor streak across the sky just now. It was followed by loud booms about 3 minutes later. Bright blue and orange fire. So glad I saw it!! #Meteor#Michigan

After receiving multiple 911 calls, the Ingham County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management told residents not to worry, saying, “It’s a natural meteor fireball.”
“While many also reported an explosion, there is no indication that anything landed on the ground or cased damage. Most likely it was the boom of the meteor breaking apart,” a text alert to residents said, according to WWJ.
Multiple 911 calls are coming of a meteor fireball that passed overhead. There is no need to call 911. All indications are that it was just a natural meteor fireball. https://t.co/l5578mnDOF
