Vikings fans were outraged to see the fan-favourite Ragnar Lothbrok (played by Travis Fimmel) meet a disturbing ending at the hands of brutal king Aelle (Ivan Blakeley Kaye) in the season four finale.

Despite seeing the Viking chained up into a cage and dropped into a pit of venomous snakes, some fans have been convinced Ragnar will be found alive and return for the final outing.

In a recent interview, creator Michael Hirst revealed fans won’t be seeing anyone rise from the dead.

However, the last outing did see a brief comeback of Ragnar in one of Bjorn’s (Alexander Ludwig) flashbacks.

Fans will remember the scene at the end of season five that saw the late Ragnar appear in Bjorn’s vision, where he saw himself holding the same sword on top of an army of dead bodies as his father’s voice is heard.

The haunting scene saw Ragnar’s voice aske his son what he is fighting for and he questions what will become of him.

In a recent interview, creator Michael Hirst spoke out about the flashback scene, revealing why the sixth and final outing won’t see anyone rise from the dead.

In conversation with Variety, Michael revealed he’s not a fan of going back on character deaths.

The creator begun: “It’s not really the kind of show where I bring dead people back particularly, so it was always going to be Bjorn’s intense flashback to that very significant moment in his life, when Ragnar tried to tell him things about power.

“The thing is, whatever someone tells you, the reality is you have to learn these things for yourself.

“That’s the journey Bjorn is on — and it’s an incredible journey, by the way.

However, despite his late father’s warning, the next outing will see Bjorn take to the throne.

Of Bjorn’s time on the throne, Michael said: “I think we’re on the liberal wing of the Viking party.

“He wants to open Kattegat up to trade and be a much better ruler than Ivar.”

However, the Michael also hinted the Viking will have difficulty with his newfound leadership, teasing trouble ahead.

The creator added: “There are problems with kingship and Bjorn is a great warrior.”

“But whether he’s a great ruler — and having to deal with complicated and serious political and social issues — that’s another matter.

“So his spirit drives him back to Kattegat, back to the soul of the Viking world, and then we’ll see in Season 6 how he gets on with that responsibility.”

Will Bjorn’s methods of leadership run him into trouble?

Fans will have to wait and see how Bjorn copes with the pressures of leadership.

Vikings season six is expected to return to History Channel and Amazon Prime Video this year.

Is Ragnar Lothbrok coming back for Vikings season 5?

It doesn’t look very likely given that Ragnar Lothbrok (played by Travis Fimmel) was killed in season four. 

Fans of the History epic watched as the Vikings hero met a gruesome end in the last run after he was thrown into a pit of poisonous snakes by his enemies.

However, that isn’t to say that he couldn’t return in some form such as a flashback or a dream.

After all, his brother Rollo (Clive Standen) made a surprise comeback to the show in episode 10, Moments of Vision, and perhaps there could be some sort of flashback. 

VIKINGS SEASON 5, EPISODE 11 RELEASE DATE

Vikings creator Michael Hirst has already suggested that Rollo is going to be going anywhere for a little while yet. 

In an interview with Variety, the writer said: “You have to find out why he’s come back. He’s come back for a very particular reason — a reason that goes way back into the first season of the show. 

“There are unresolved issues in his personal life with his brother and Lagertha, and these are issues that he still wants to deal with.”

Since finishing up on Vikings, Fimmel has starred in a number of new films and TV shows including a film called Lean On Pete in which he stars opposite Christopher Plummer, Steve Buscemi and Chloë Sevigny.

VIKINGS SEASON 6 RELEASE DATE

He’s slated to be featuring as the lead in an as-yet-untitled Wyatt Earp anthology TV series. 

Fimmel will also be teaming up with fellow Australian Russell Crowe in the movie The True History of the Kelly Gang.

His other upcoming credits include Dreamland with Margot Robbie and Finding Steve McQueen, the latter of which is said to be post-production according to IMDb. 

Judging by his busy schedule as well, it doesn’t look like Fimmel is going to be able to fit in much time for Vikings. 

IS RAGNAR LOTHBROK BASED ON A REAL PERSON?

Will there be another season of Vikings?

The good news for Vikings fans is that there will be a sixth run.

US network History confirmed the news in 2017, shortly before season five aired.

Executive Eli Lehrer said in a statement: “Vikings has creatively sailed to monumental lengths. 

“The series has evolved from early raids in England, to the heart-stopping death of Ragnar Lothbrok, to the fierce battles of the Great Heathen Army, and now we’ll see the sons of Ragnar exploring and conquering the known world.

“Michael Hirst has only scratched the surface of his epic saga. We look forward to continuing our partnership with one of the greatest writers in this era of Peak TV and entertaining our viewers with 40 new episodes over the next two seasons.”

Season six will have another 20 episodes and production has already started at the show’s base in Ireland. 

Vikings season 5, part B will return later this year.

From seasons one to four, TV drama Vikings was led by fearsome Danish warrior Ragnar Lothbrok (played by Travis Fimmel).

The show, created by Michael Hirst and airing on US channel History, followed his exploits as he sought to conquer England and France.

Season one started off with the Lindisfarne raid of 793 AD, which is the first real-life recorded Viking incursion in history and led to the destruction of a monastery – the ruins of which can still be seen today. 

In the drama Lothbrok was portrayed as a farmer who climbed up through the ranks of the Viking hierarchy by proving himself during a series of English raids.

He eventually became a Scandinavian king thanks to his military success and the support from his fellow Vikings and kinsman. 

The last run ended with the shocking death of Ragnar and season five has dealt with the power struggle between his sons in the aftermath. 

But did Ragnar Lothbrok really exist and is his depiction in Vikings historically accurate?

Is Ragnar Lothbrok from Vikings based on a real person?

The existence of Ragnar Lothbrok or Lodbrok is uncertain with some suggesting that he is the stuff of Norse legend. 

Others theorise that he may have been a real man but his successes over the years have been subject to exaggeration.

Justin Pollard, who served as the consultant on Vikings, explained that the character in the TV show is an amalgamation of a number of individuals who appear in historical accounts from the era.

“It could never be a complete historical reconstruction, nor would we have enough data to base our hero on a single character, but a hero must have a name and we chose one whose shadow haunts the pages of 9th Century chronicles before re-emerging in later centuries as a sparkling saga hero. He went on to say: “Ragnar is the first real Viking personality to emerge from the hazy accounts of the period but in many ways he still belongs more in the fable-filled pages of the sagas than amongst the sober entries in the chronicles. 

“That there even was a single Ragnar is still a matter of some debate due not least to the eagerness of contemporary writers to kill him off – something which is dutifully recorded a number of times, at a number of dates and accompanied by a number of different reasons.”

According to Pollard, the figure of Lothbrok first appeared in historical records around 845 via a man called “Ragnall”, who led a fleet of ships to invade Paris. But due to dysentery sent by the gods, the captain and his men perished from the illness. 

However, the figure of Lothbrok comes up again and again over the next 10 years with accounts having him sailing the seas off the coast of Scotland and eventually settling in Dublin.

He meets his death in 852, before he’s resurrected and killed off again at Carlingford Lough. The accounts see Lothbrok then kicking the bucket in Anglesey and finally in Northumbria during a raid where he’s thrown into a snake pit.

After this, Scandinavian poets write about the Saga of Ragnar and the Tale of the Sons of Ragnar, which are not based in historical fact. 

Pollard describes these poems as “dramatic fictionalised stories of long dead heroes whose connection to reality might be little more than a name”. 

The Lothbrok portrayed in Vikings is a mixture of the Ragnar chronicles and heroes mentioned in history but also “the embodiment of the extraordinary effect the arrival of Viking raiders had on the Ninth Century European mind”.

He concludes: “Our Ragnar is a combination of all these things – the ghostly remembrance of one of the first great Viking raiders, the swashbuckling hero of the sagas and above all, the fear of the arrival of ‘outsiders’.” 

The Lothbrok of Vikings met a gruesome end in season four when he was tossed into a pit of venomous snakes – which was one of the ways the legendary figure met his many demises.

Who plays Ragnar Lothbrok in Vikings?

Ragnar Lothbrok is played by Australian actor Travis Fimmel, whose biggest roles to date include Hollywood film Warcraft and The Beast. 

Speaking about his character’s death, Fimmel told The Hollywood Reporter: “It felt right for the show. The episodes that follow my death are fantastic. It works well for the show and the young actors to keep the audience.”

However, creator Hirst teased that Lothbrok could make a return in some form or other in the future, saying: “But because he’s such a powerful presence in people’s lives he could reappear in dreams, in visions… 

“I don’t think that any of my major characters… I started with — Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard), Ragnar and Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) and Rollo (Clive Standen)… none of them will ever actually go away or disappear from the saga.”

The renewal came off the back of the ratings success of season four with an average of 7.8 million viewers per episode in America.

The sixth run is in production now on location in Ireland.
