South Korean President Moon Jae-in attributed the recent warming relations between his country and North Korea to the US President Donald Trump during a New Year’s press conference at the Presidential Blue House on Wednesday.
Asked by a reporter whether Trump deserved credit for helping to facilitate the talks — the first dialogue between North and South Korea in over two years — Moon grinned and said that he believed the US president “did a lot” and said that he wanted to “convey his thanks.”
Moon’s comments about Trump’s role, which drew some laughter from several reporters in the room, have raised eyebrows in the US and elsewhere, given Trump’s history of inflammatory tweets and statements on the two Koreas. Trump has previously made several disparaging statements about the North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. More recently, Trump threatened the North with “fire and fury” and later floated the possibility of negotiations.
For now, Trump appears to approve of the bilateral talks between the two Koreas and suggested that the US would also be open to the possibility.
Trump said on Saturday: “Sure, I always believe in talking, but we have a very firm stance. Look, our stance, you know what it is. We’re very firm. But I would be, absolutely I would do that. I don’t have a problem with that at all.”
“[Kim] knows I’m not messing around,” Trump continued. “I’m not messing around. Not even a little bit. Not even 1%. He understands that. At the same time, if we can come up with a very peaceful and very good solution, we’re working on it … with a lot of people.”
Thomson Reuters
Moon, who said that US-led sanctions against North Korea may have played a role in advancing the talks, also made a point to emphasize his commitment to a denuclearized North Korea: “The denuclearization of the Korean peninsula the two Koreas agreed upon jointly [in the past] is our basic stance that will never be given up,” Moon said, according to Reuters.
The press conference, which was open to many news outlets, featured questions in both Korean and English, and played out much differently from White House press briefings, which have been particularly terse under the Trump administration.
Moon answered questions for over an hour with reporters, promising to continue the briefings and meet with reporters.
“I apologize for not getting to all of your questions,” Moon said at the end of the briefing. “If there is another chance like this, those who couldn’t ask questions today will be given another chance.”
Moon’s briefing comes amid the the watershed negotiations with a North Korean delegation ahead of the 2018 Winter Olympics held in South Korea in February. North Korea has since agreed to send a delegation of athletes and officials to the games.

Katie Couric, who co-hosted NBC’s “Today” with Matt Lauer for 15 years, once said in a 2012 interview that Lauer pinched her “on the a– a lot.”
NBC News fired Lauer on Wednesday for “inappropriate sexual behavior,” after the network received a complaint two days earlier from one of Lauer’s colleagues.
The network’s chairman, Andrew Lack, said in a memo to staff that the complaint was the first formally levied against Lauer, but that the company was “also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.”
In Couric’s interview on the Bravo talk show “Watch What Happens Live,” which TMZ resurfaced on Wednesday, host Andy Cohen had asked her what she considered to be Lauer’s most annoying habit.
“He pinches me on the a– a lot,” she replied.
Lauer’s firing is the latest in a long line of recent dismissals and resignations following sexual misconduct allegations at media companies. CBS’ Charlie Rose, ABC News’ Mark Halperin, and NPR’s Michael Oreskes have all left their roles in recent weeks.

The reporter was covering 800 years of Charter of the Forest at Lincoln Castle when he was almost drowned out completely by their bells.
He had interviewed the Fund4Trees group during his segment on the historic anniversary before they showed off their cheeky side.
As John was handing back to Dan Walker and Louise Minchin, they all started ringing their bikes and thankfully all appeared to be in jest.
“Well done. Thank you very much indeed. Nice to see you, nice to see you folks. Thanks very much indeed,” the presenter had started.
“From the glorious Lincoln, the cathedral and the castle, back to you in the studio,” John continued before the naughty guests started chipping in.
“Be quiet you lot!” he laughed as the noise got louder, before Louise, 49, added: “Cyclists always chatting!”
“@BBCBreakfast Not sure about the weather 800 years ago – but today in Lincoln a new charter for trees eight centuries after the first,” John had tweeted prior to the broadcast.

Socceroos: The Socceroos gather in Japan tomorrow ahead of their crucial World Cup Qualifier on Thursday.

AUSTRALIAN greats say the Socceroos must be prepared to wage physical warfare in Japan if they are to realise their World Cup dreams.
Golden generation member Josip Skoko says physicality has been phased out of Australia’s game in recent years, but Archie Thompson insists Japan is susceptible to intimidation if the Socceroos bring the right intensity on Thursday night.
And if under-fire coach Vahid Halilhodzic’s musings are anything to go by, Thompson is right about Japan being worried about Australia’s size and strength.
Impressed by the way Ange Postecoglou’s side pressed and harassed Chile in their last outing, Stan Lazaridis says the team must use that same blueprint in Saitama, where obtaining at least a draw is a must.
QUALIFIER:Japan fans ‘want Socceroos to win’
“That performance against Chile, I call that the hamburger with the lot,” Lazaridis said.
“For me, there was nothing missing, it had elements of everything.

“The fact we could demonstrate that physical presence, but also the skill level, it was very impressive.
“They were hunting in packs, they were like wolves and that’s what I loved to see.”
Skoko, a part of the 2006 squad that made the Round of 16 in Germany, said it was not disrespectful to say that was a physical team.
“And I think we’ve stopped using our physicality,” Skoko said.
“We had some great teams and great players, but the one non-negotiable was intensity,
“And it wasn’t always about going out to intimidate our opponents, but it was about going out and matching them and really taking it to them in that physical battle.
“That was the lesson out of that Chile game. If you put a good game plan together and really get in their heads, get in their faces and bring out what us Australians generally do have — which is great work rate and a will to win — then one-on-one it’s a battle, it’s a war.
“I definitely think that’s a part of our game that hasn’t been there of late, but should always be there.”
Thompson said the Socceroos can get the upper hand in the game using its physical advantage, as it did against Chile.
“I don’t think they like that physicality, anyone taking it to them,” Thompson said.
“Battles in the past when we’ve dominated them are when we have done well, not so much technically because they are very gifted in that area, but physically.
“We’ve got to bring that. And we’ve got the players to do it.”

]]>The UK Brexit Secretary rejected a €100-billion ($ 112 billion) price tag for leaving the EU ahead of a meeting with the European Commission. As both sides continue to play hardball, the chances for a ‘hard’ Brexit increase.
The nine-figure estimate of Britain’s divorce from the EU was voiced earlier in May by German and French analysts. It rose from the previous figure after taking into account farming subsidies and EU administration fees. The previous figure from European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in February was €60 billion.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, UK Brexit Secretary David Davis said Britain will walk away from Brexit negotiations, unless Brussels agrees to drop its demands. He said that he regarded even “£1bn as a lot of money,” and predicted that the talks may plunge into crisis due to the EU’s position.
“We don’t need to just look like we can walk away, we need to be able to walk away,” he said. “Under the circumstances, if that was necessary, we would be in a position to do it.”
The European Commission, which is negotiating the terms of Brexit with London on behalf of the 27 members of the EU, is to convene on Monday to confirm the mandate of Brussels’ chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, who will then have his first meeting with Davis. A senior EU official predicted to the Times that the meeting will end with the Briton storming out.
“I would like to see the UK delegation’s faces when they sit down for the first meeting,” the EU official said. “I think they will walk away immediately. Which is dangerous, because once you walk away, you need a major concession to come back to the table and we are simply not able to provide any.”
Davis acknowledged to the newspaper that the meeting will be “fairly turbulent” and that Britain will reject the demands of Brussels.
In addition to the the ‘divorce bill,’ London and Brussels disagree on other issues, like the rights of EU citizens living and working in Britain and the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
According to Reuters, Brussels does not expect substantial Brexit negotiations to start until after the general election in the UK on June 8.
UK Prime Minister Theresa May called for the snap election in March, almost three years ahead of schedule, and is expected to win a greater majority for her Conservative party, giving London a stronger position in talks with Brussels. An EU source told the agency that EU officials are planning to begin talks on Brexit on June 19.
“The 19th [of June] is tentative, because Britain cannot confirm anything until after the elections,” the source involved in the Brexit negotiation process said. “The 19th is… the earliest date they can envisage.”

Democratic Sen. Al Franken on Sunday doubled down on a suggestion that some of his Republican colleagues in the Senate are concerned about President Donald Trump’s mental health.
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, host Jake Tapper asked Franken if he was serious when he told HBO’s Bill Maher that some of his Republican colleagues “will say [Trump’s] not right mentally, and then some are harsher.”
“Yes,” Franken said. “It’s not the majority of them. It’s a few.”
The Minnesota senator explained that some Republicans were puzzled and worried by Trump’s continued insistence — despite no evidence — that millions of people voted illegally against him in states like California and New Hampshire. The president asserted last week in a meeting with senators that thousands of out-of-state voters were bused into the state, resulting in his defeat in the state during the 2016 election, a claim that he backed with no evidence.
“We all have this suspicion that — he lies a lot. He says thing that aren’t true. That’s the same as lying, I guess,” Franken said, before noting Trump’s voter fraud claims. “‘Three million to five million people voted illegally.’ There was a new one about people going in from Massachusetts to New Hampshire.”
He added: “That is not the norm for a president of the United States, or, actually, for a human being.”
Despite a lack of any corroborating evidence, The Trump administration didn’t back down from the president’s new voter fraud claims.
During a testy interview on Sunday, ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos appeared agitated after repeatedly attempting, and failing, to elicit specific evidence from Trump adviser Stephen Miller to support the president’s claims.
“Just for the record, you have provided absolutely no evidence,” Stephanopoulos said.
“The White House has provided enormous evidence,” Miller interjected.
He continued: “George, it is a fact and you will not deny it, that are massive numbers of non-citizens in this country who are registered to vote. That is a scandal. We should stop the presses and as a country we should be aghast about the fact that you have people who have no right to vote in this country registered to vote, canceling out the franchise of lawful citizens of this country.”

Despite his frequent assurances that he is not interested in seeking higher office, Franken’s political prospects have become the subject of fascination among many Washington pundits, as he’s emerged as a critic of Trump’s cabinet nominees and policies.
Outlets including the Washington Post and the National Journal last week both published op-eds touting the Minnesota senator’s potential strengths in a hypothetical presidential matchup with Trump, citing his history as a comedian and appeal to white voters who backed Trump over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential campaign.
Other outlets like CBS News and the New Republic suggested that Franken’s viral grilling of Trump’s cabinet nominees showed he could be a powerful force in the Democratic party.
Many Democratic strategists and staffers have privately speculated about Franken’s prospects, but aren’t certain of his intentions.
It’s “way too early,” former Minneapolis Mayor RT Rybak told Business Insider last week. “I love Al as my senator, but I imagine there will be thousand of boomlets in the next couple years, and about the only thing we should take seriously for the next year is how to stop Trump and win the midterms.”
