Like Gumby strapped to one of those Midieval torture racks, it seems there is no limit to how long RuPaul’s Drag Race is capable of stretching out the first elimination of Season 13.

For the third consecutive week, Friday’s episode ended without a single queen going home, as the “losers” from the premiere returned to the werkroom for another chance to prove their worth before the almighty judges’ panel.

Let’s start by focusing on the good: the reveal of this week’s top two queens — Rosé and Denali — came as no surprise to anyone. Rosé made a big impression on the judges with her Moschino- and McQueen-inspired looks in the “Lady and the Vamp” mini challenge, while Denali also turned heads in an ensemble reminiscent of a slinky mistress emerging from the flames of an unruly candelabra that was knocked over by someone’s drunk uncle. (Yes, extremely specific narrative!) And when it came time for the group number, both queens owned their respective moment in the spotlight; Rosé took a page from her bandmate Jan, ending her “Phenomenon” verse on a big-ass note, while Denali served up some of my favorite lyrics of the night. (“Triple lutz on these sluts.” Are you kidding me?!)

For their lip sync battle, set to the tune of Britney Spears’ timeless bop “If U Seek Amy,” Rosé took a slightly more comedic approach, while Denali chose to fully live the pop star fantasy. (Bonus points for their synchronized split!) Either one of these girls would have been an acceptable winner in my eyes, but the $ 5,000 tip ultimately went to ice queen Denali.

My other favorite lyrics of the night came courtesy of Joey Jay, who introduced herself in the number with a simple “I’m a gay-ass bitch! I’m Joey Jay!” (Look, sometimes the best message is also the simplest, OK?) And can we talk about how Tamisha Iman is 49, with biological children older than some of her competitors this season? She must bathe in the literal Fountain of Youth™ on a daily basis. There’s simply no other explanation.

Props must also be awarded to Utica Queen, someone I completely underestimated. From her McDonald’s ball pit-inspired look in the mini challenge to her “Sleeve-y Nicks” getup on the main stage, Utica is definitely a weird one to watch. (The judges were right to compare her to Thorgy Thor, though the Yvie Oddly comparison felt like a bit of a stretch.) Adding to her mystique, the Minnesota-based queen also revealed herself to be… a Seventh-day Adventist? (“No pressure, but Jesus is great!”)

One queen who did herself absolutely no favors this week was Kahmora Hall. Her looks may have been polished — she credited Kate Middleton, Cher and Spears for influencing several of her ensembles — but she spent so much time getting ready that the producers almost began the mini challenge without her. And if time was an issue with only five other queens in the werkroom, just imagine how she’ll fare when the two groups merge next week!

As 2018 draws to a close, RT takes a look back at the weird and wonderful world of viral news, from the death-defying heroism to rage-inducing moments that grabbed our attention. Here are the viral winners and losers of 2018.

WINNERS

French Spiderman

Mamoudou Gassaman’s heroic climb up the side of a Paris building to rescue a trapped four-year-old places him firmly in the viral winners’ camp.

The immigrant from Mali didn’t hesitate when he saw a small toddler hanging precariously off the side of a balcony in May, leaping into action and scaling the building’s facade to reach the boy as onlookers watched in shock.

Gassaman’s Spider-man moment saw him become a viral sensation, and a petition was soon started to grant the illegal immigrant citizenship in recognition of his heroism. He soon met with French President Emmanuel Macron and was granted French citizenship and a job.

The 7 year old YouTube millionaire

Seven year old Ryan, of Ryan ToysReview YouTube channel, earned a cool $ 22 million for opening toys this year, making the pint-sized entrepreneur YouTube’s top earner for 2018.

Ryan is one of the popular ‘unboxing’ Youtubers who enthrall viewers by opening packaging on products (in his case toys) and then explaining their features. He earned about $ 21 million from advertising revenue alone, with the rest of his earnings generated from sponsored videos.

Knickers, the unbelievably large steer

The chances of a humble bovine reaching viral stardom are few, especially for something as seemingly innocuous as height but, for Australian steer Knickers, his towering stance was so great it saw him become a global viral sensation – and saved him from the slaughterhouse.

Knickers was pictured looming behind a herd of cattle on farmer Geoff Pearson’s farm in Western Australia. The steer is an unbelievable six feet four inches and appeared to dwarf his more vertically challenged counterparts.

Thunder-stealing pelicans

A pair of a attention-seeking Pelican wreaked havoc at a graduation ceremony at Pepperdine University in California in May.

The rogue birds swept ominously through the crowds at the graduation, causing the ceremony to grind to a halt as security struggled with how best to remove them. One of the pelicans even sat among the audience, flapping its large wings to the shock of some attendees.

Yodeling wonder

When 11 year-old Mason Ramsey opened his mouth to blast out some yodeling in a Walmart aisle one day in April, he had no idea it would bring him superstardom.

His rendition of ‘Lovesick Blues’ went viral and Ramsey wound up performing at Coachella – and even landed himself a record deal.

LOSERS

Logan Paul’s dead body disaster

Top YouTuber Logan Paul was trending for all the wrong reasons in January when he shared a video boasting that he had found a dead body while walking through Japan’s Aokigahara forest, a known suicide black spot. The video racked up over six million views in 24 hours that included a tsunami of hate directed at his stunt, described as sick and opportunistic.

Paul’s subsequent apologies fell flat and he went from one of the most popular YouTubers to one of the most hated. Despite this, his loyal fans continue to defend and support him.

Tide Pod Challenge participants

Eating brightly colored plastic packets of toxic chemicals for the lolz and social media glory seems pretty dumb, but that didn’t stop countless teens taking on the Tide Pod ‘challenge’ this January.

The trend got so bad that the detergent’s manufacturer brought out an ad urging people not to eat it, and YouTube removed videos of people attempting it.

Racist busybodies

In an ominous reflection of race relations in the US, 2018 saw a worrying epidemic of busybody Americans calling the police on African Americans going about their business.

As each case was made public, the racist instigators were quickly identified and shamed across social media, with many earning catchy nicknames like Permit Patty and BBQ Becky.

Some of the supposedly offensive acts that prompted the calls to police included sitting by the pool of an apartment building, an eight yea-old selling water and a politician canvassing for votes.

The Biggest Losers in Trump’s Trade War? Women https://briefnews.eu/the-biggest-losers-in-trumps-trade-war-women/ https://briefnews.eu/the-biggest-losers-in-trumps-trade-war-women/#respond Tue, 30 Oct 2018 19:08:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-biggest-losers-in-trumps-trade-war-women/

The latest round of tariffs to be proposed in the U.S.-China trade war — $ 200 billion worth — is a massive escalation in the retaliatory levies the countries have been throwing at each other this year. But it looks like American women are going to be the biggest losers.

This enormous third wave of tariffs by the Trump administration — new ones go into effect next week — is a significant break from decades of increased coordination between China and the U.S. It also follows $ 34 billion in tariffs that went into effect in July and a second, $ 16 billion round that went into effect in mid-August.

“Increasing the size of the tariffs is merely increasing the harm that will be done,” Matthew Shay, president and CEO of the National Retail Foundation, said in a statement in August.

The third round is different not only because of its size — five times more punitive, financially speaking — but also because it directly targets imports of consumer goods. Experts say the tariffs will hit the consumer in the pocketbook as manufacturers pass the burden on to consumers through higher costs on items such as clothing, household appliances and even toys. The National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates that the plan could cost the average American family $ 1,700 in the first year alone.

American women will be hit hardest for several reasons:

The Trump Tax Hits Items Used Primarily By Women

Round three includes many products that are used more by women than men, including pocketbooks, beauty products and even toilet paper. That’s right. As a matter of hygiene, women use five times more toilet paper than men, according to a study funded by the Scott Paper Company. So you can add the “Trump Tax” to the “Pink Tax” women already pay (7 percent, according to studies like this one from New York City’s Department of Consumer Affairs) for products marketed to girls and women.

As part of her testimony against this third round of tariffs, Hun Quach, the vice president for international trade at the Retail Industry Leaders Association, a trade association that represents the world’s largest retail companies, described the tariffs as an anti-consumer tax. She called it “a baby tax … a getting ready in the morning tax … a pet tax… a fruit tax … a school lunch tax [and a] … a backpack tax.” She pointed out how it’s a “tax on keeping warm,” with parkas, scarves, hats, earmuffs and caps also listed.

“Parents will pay more for school supplies,” says Quach, with paint, glue sticks, binders, plastic rulers, tape measures, fabric, even calculators targeted. “And teachers too. [It] is a back-to-school teacher tax.” According to the U.S. Department of Education, a whopping 94 percent of teachers — a profession in which 77 percent in the U.S. are women — spend their own money on school supplies.

There Are More Women

According to the U.S. census, there are 7 million more women than men in the population. Basic math means women will take on more of this new economic burden. Also, the Tax Foundation speculates that if manufacturers are unable to pass increased costs on to consumers through higher prices alone, they’ll simply take them out of their profits by offering lower hiring salaries and fewer raises. Remember, women are already making less than men, earning 80.5 cents on the dollar and pulling in median annual earnings that are $ 10,000 less than men’s, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

There Are More Women-Only Households

Nearly a quarter of all U.S. households are helmed by women, and women only — 23 percent, according to the U.S. census, compared to the 2.5 percent helmed solely by men. More women than men are the sole supporters of their families, spending their lower paychecks (on average) to buy products needed to maintain a household and raise children (and take care of aging parents, which they do more of too, according to the Family Caregiver Alliance).

A wide range of children’s items can be found on President Trump’s tax list, including backpacks and bicycles (along with $ 28 billion worth of toys), household items such as chairs and sofas, and hundreds of food items, including fish sticks. “These tariffs threaten to increase costs for American families and destroy the livelihoods of U.S. workers,” said Jonathan Gold, NRF vice president for supply chain and customs policy. “The collateral damage to wide swaths of the U.S. economy will be significant.”

It may not be as obvious as blatant misogyny or abuse, but this Trump Tax will, without a doubt, harm women and children.

It Chapter 2 set photo: Adult Losers Club chief James McAvoy CONFIRMS shoot start with pic https://briefnews.eu/it-chapter-2-set-photo-adult-losers-club-chief-james-mcavoy-confirms-shoot-start-with-pic/ https://briefnews.eu/it-chapter-2-set-photo-adult-losers-club-chief-james-mcavoy-confirms-shoot-start-with-pic/#respond Wed, 20 Jun 2018 13:23:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/it-chapter-2-set-photo-adult-losers-club-chief-james-mcavoy-confirms-shoot-start-with-pic/

Earlier this year the X-Men star was confirmed as the adult version of Bill, last seen played by Jaeden Lieberher in the It movie.

Set 27 years after the events of the first film, It: Chapter 2 sees the Losers Club all grown up in present day.

But when news of Pennywise once again wrecking havoc on the children of Derry, Maine comes apparent, the group return to take him down once more.

Now the shoot has finally begun on It: Chapter 2, as confirmed by the first set photo taken by McAvoy himself.

Posted yesterday, McAvoy wrote on his official Instagram: “Day 1 on IT 2.

“Glad you got the memo guys #passthecheeseplease #derryordairy.”

The picture itself was a shot of the star reflected in a mirror holding a triangle piece of The Laughing Cow cheese.

Sadly McAvoy’s snap doesn’t reveal anything about It: Chapter 2 apart from a poor pun.

The star is joined on It: Chapter 2 by Jessica Chastain as Beverly Marsh and Bill Hader as Richie Tozer.

These three film star leads were followed by a group of TV actors to make up the supporting cast.

This included another couple announced at once in the form of James Ransone as Eddie Kaspbrak and Andy Bean as Stanley Uris.

As for Ben Hanscom, a character who goes from chubby kid to handsome hunk, it was Jay Ryan who bagged that role.

And last but not least is Isaiah Mustafa as Mike Hanlon, who was announced over the weekend.

Speaking with Den of Geek, Skarsgard said: “We’re gearing up for it now, so I’m sort of in the process of getting back into that character of Pennywise. I’m sort of in the mindset and we’re gearing up for it.

“I think they [the Losers Club cast] start in July. I’m not sure exactly when my start date is, but some time this summer.”

It: Chapter Two will be released in UK cinemas on September 6, 2019.

‘It: Chapter 2′ Lands Isaiah Mustafa for the Last Slot in the Losers’ Club https://briefnews.eu/it-chapter-2%e2%80%b2-lands-isaiah-mustafa-for-the-last-slot-in-the-losers-club/ https://briefnews.eu/it-chapter-2%e2%80%b2-lands-isaiah-mustafa-for-the-last-slot-in-the-losers-club/#respond Sun, 10 Jun 2018 07:20:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/it-chapter-2%e2%80%b2-lands-isaiah-mustafa-for-the-last-slot-in-the-losers-club/ It Chapter 2 Cast

The cast of It: Chapter 2 has slowly been filling out over the past couple months, and now the final piece is in place.

Isaiah Mustafa, best known as the former spokesman for Old Spice, has landed the role of the adult version of Mike Hanlon. He’s the only member of the Losers’ Club to stay behind in Derry, Maine as an adult. It’s Mike who ends up calling the gang back to town to fight Pennywise the Clown when he returns.

Chosen Jacobs, who played young Mike Hanlon in the first IT last year, announced the news on Instagram:

You’re one of us now @isaiahmustafa. #ITMovie

A post shared by C•H•O•S•E•N (@chosenjacobs) on

One of Mike Hanlon’s more interesting traits in IT was handed off to the character of Ben. Originally it was Mike who was pouring over old photos and documents in the library to dig into the history of Derry, Maine. However, it sounds like Mike will get that responsibility back in the sequel. Since Mike stayed back in Derry, he’s been researching the town, interviewing residents and trying to figure out how to defeat Pennywise once and for all. But his efforts have come at a risk to his mental stability.

Last fall, director Andy Muschietti teased a bit of a darker path for Mike Hanlon in It: Chapter 2:

“My idea of Mike in the second movie is quite darker from the book. I want to make his character the one pivotal character who brings them all together, but staying in Derry took a toll with him. I want him to be a junkie actually. A librarian junkie. When the second movie starts, he’s a wreck. He’s not just the collector of knowledge of what Pennywise has been doing in Derry. He will bear the role of trying to figure out how to defeat him. The only way he can do that is to take drugs and alter his mind.”

Isaiah Mustafa isn’t exactly a household name, so his casting is somewhat surprising for a role that seems rather significant. In fact, with the exception of his turn as the handsome spokesman of Old Spice commercials, this will be the highest profile role he’s ever taken. Otherwise, the past couple of years he’s had a role on the series Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments.

Mustafa joins a cast that includes Jessica Chastain as Bev, James McAvoy as Bill, Bill Hader as Richie, Jay Ryan as Ben, Andy Bean as Stanley Uris and James Ransone as Eddie. Plus, Bill Skarsgard will be returning as the creepy Pennywise.

It: Chapter 2 arrives this fall on September 6, 2019.

Biggest losers among automakers if trade war really happens https://briefnews.eu/biggest-losers-among-automakers-if-trade-war-really-happens/ https://briefnews.eu/biggest-losers-among-automakers-if-trade-war-really-happens/#respond Wed, 04 Apr 2018 23:59:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/biggest-losers-among-automakers-if-trade-war-really-happens/

Escalating trade tensions between the United States and China, if the tariffs threatened by both sides are actually implemented, stand to hurt some automakers more than others.

If a tit-for-tat tariff dispute between the two countries erupts into a full-blown trade war, auto production in both will be affected, but U.S. factories would feel the strongest effect because China imports nearly 270,000 U.S. vehicles, worth $ 11 billion, and sends relatively few back.

The United States has a 60-day comment period on plans, and China is waiting for U.S. action before implementing its own. A Washington-based source close to one of the automakers called the moves “a posturing exercise by both countries (and) part of a process” that will play out over the next two months.

China has threatened to double tariffs to 50 percent on imported automobiles and other U.S.-made goods to retaliate against the Trump administration’s proposed tariffs on a broad range of products, including vehicles and automotive parts.

Here are the automakers with the most to worry about:

Tesla

The electric automaker’s California plant ships an estimated 15,000 cars a year to China. And unlike the Detroit automakers, which have facilities within China, 100 percent of Tesla’s sales there would be subject to the tariffs.

Barclays auto analyst Brian Johnson, in an investor note on Wednesday, predicted that Tesla “would bear the brunt of any increased auto tariff on a relative basis,” with China accounting for 17 percent of the company’s revenue.

BMW and Mercedes

The Germans make luxury SUVs such as the Mercedes GLE and BMW X5 in the U.S. South that are exported to China — BMW in South Carolina and Daimler AG in Alabama.

Chinese vehicle imports from all markets last year climbed to 1.2 million, according to the China Automobile Dealers Association. Less than a quarter of those — 267,473, according to Statista — came from U.S. auto plants, including 100,000 from BMW’s South Carolina factory.

A Mercedes-Benz spokesman said the company does not speculate on ongoing negotiation between China and the U.S., adding that it is “monitoring the situation closely.”

BMW said in a statement: “A further escalation of the trade conflict between the U.S. and China would be harmful for all stakeholders.”

Ford

The No. 2 U.S. automaker’s problem is twofold, involving both Chinese imports of premium U.S.-built Lincoln vehicles and its plan to export low-cost Focus compacts from China to the United States. It would get dinged by both countries’ tariffs.

The proposed U.S. tariffs on Chinese-made vehicles could affect Ford’s plans to shift production of the compact Focus next year from Michigan to China, a move the company said last year would save it $ 500 million.

Lincoln, meanwhile, has been struggling to gain traction in China’s crowded luxury car market. Ford has said it ships about 80,000 vehicles a year to China, including various Lincoln models.

Ford declined to comment specifically on plans for the Focus and Lincoln. It said in a statement on Wednesday: “We encourage both governments to work together to resolve issues between these two important economies.”

General Motors’ exposure is more limited. Though it is the bestselling automaker in China, most of those cars are built in-country. It sends just a handful of vehicles over, while importing only 30,000 Buick Envision crossovers a year from China to the U.S.

GM said on Wednesday it is “too early” to say how the Trump administration’s proposed tariffs will impact its future production plans for the Envision.

Shares of automakers ended higher on Wednesday as Wall Street stocks changed course in the afternoon when investors’ trade fears subsided. Tesla shares closed 7.3 percent higher at $ 286.94, Ford shares gained 1.6 percent to close at $ 11.33, and GM shares were up 3 percent at $ 38.03.

Decisions on whether and where to shift vehicle production could be complicated by U.S. President Donald Trump’s moves to significantly revamp or withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement that allows tariff-free shipments of vehicles to the United States from Mexico and Canada.
