Among the residents of this Rockwellian tract-house haven is Alice (Florence Pugh), a young housewife as immaculately dressed and manicured as the chic home she ritualistically cleans. When not scrubbing and vacuuming, Alice drinks poolside with the other wives of the neighborhood. She’s married to Jack (the pop star Harry Styles), a blandly dashing British go-getter who lavishes her with status symbols and ravishes her over the dinner table. Every morning, he climbs into his sleek silver convertible, joining a fleet of commuting coworkers racing across the desert to company headquarters — the first image that implies there might be something a little stranger than simple stifling conformity going on beneath the immaculate surfaces of this town.

Wilde and her screenwriter, Katie Silberman, don’t rush to reveal that something. Instead, they let the audience discover it gradually with Alice, as little cracks form on the façade of her “perfect” dollhouse life. What, she begins to wonder, does her husband do out there in the desert, at a mysterious building none of the spouses are allowed to approach, supposedly for their own safety? “We’re changing the world,” insists Frank, town founder and cultishly revered CEO of The Victory Project, played with a twinkle of motivational-speaker arrogance by Chris Pine. He’s quick to dismiss the mounting anxieties of one of his employee’s wives (KiKi Layne, underserved by a skimpy role). Alice, though, starts to see some sense in her concern.
Audiences might be less interested in what’s going on behind the scenes of the fictional Victory than what went on behind the scenes of this real movie. Don’t Worry Darling arrives now after a press tour that turned into a long series of juicy dramatic anecdotes from the set — an airing of dirty celebrity laundry that kept social media enraptured and may well have goosed public interest in the film. Yet anyone going into it expecting telltale signs of a troubled production, or maybe some sort of new camp classic of clashing star egos, may be disappointed to discover how little of that purported chaos made it to the screen. If anything, Don’t Worry Darling is controlled to a fault.

It certainly represents a creative leap forward for Wilde, whose first feature, the teen comedy Booksmart, was much nicer than it was funny. (Like its uptight honor-roll heroines, it struggled to really cut loose.) Shifting to an entirely different wavelength here — and casting herself in a key supporting role — Wilde sustains an atmosphere of hushed unease via the whisper of a hyperventilating score, the repetitive buzz of a radio set to the golden oldies dial, and production design that’s a little fruitfully … off. All the same, it’s hard to shake the sense that the director has constructed her second feature like an annotated essay: A little of the feminist dread of The Stepford Wives, a little of the repetitive domestic routine of Jeanne Dielman, all threaded through a commentary on a modern male obsession with the traditional gender roles of a bygone era.
Wilde’s savviest move was securing Pugh, who slowly twists her cherubic joy into paranoid distress, like a reversal of her climactic close-up in Midsommar. The most striking moments in Don’t Worry Darling find her Alice staring, figuratively or literally, through the looking glass … or threatening to shatter it. At one point, she’s suddenly pinned against the bay window she’s cleaning by some mysterious, constricting force — a surreal expression of the moment when someone discovers that they’ve been living every day of their short life in a fishbowl. Yet Pugh can’t entirely enliven a movie that, eventually, just starts circling a twist the audience might figure out long before Alice does. Don’t Worry Darling is like a Twilight Zone episode pushed to the outer limits of its dramatic sustainability. It takes 122 minutes to do what Rod Serling would have in a cool 25.
What we’re watching is a fantasy of sunny, carefree prosperity splintering into a nightmare of oppressive confinement. But isn’t that the arc of every movie about the lie of the suburban dream, and the regressive dead end of the nuclear family plan? By now, calling the clichéd image of 1950s two-car-garage American bliss an illusion is its own cliché. It’s impossible to look at an impossibly bright, clean patch of front lawn and not think of the bugs David Lynch found squirming beneath some three-and-a-half decades ago. Don’t Worry Darling throws a new coat of paint on that premise. But as drama, it’s prefab.
Don’t Worry Darling opens in select theaters Friday, September 23. For more of A.A. Dowd’s writing, please visit his Authory page.

The Justice Department is looking into Donald Trump's main fundraising arm, Save America, with a federal grand jury doling a fresh set of subpoenas this week to aides who worked in the Trump administration and the former president's election campaign, according to multiple reports.
The subpoenas appear to be a part of the DOJ's larger inquiry into the events leading up to the Capitol riot, ABC News reported. The Justice Department is currently investigating the moments leading up to the insurrection, attempts to obstruct that inquiry, and the scheme to overturn the 2020 vote using a slate of fake electors.
About a half-dozen current and former aides were subpoenaed, The New York Times reported, citing anonymous sources familiar with the investigation. This includes former Trump White House aides William B. Harrison, William S. Russell, and Nicholas Luna, as well as Ivanka Trump's chief of staff Julie Radford.
The interest in Trump's Save America PAC is a new development in the DOJ's probe, although it's unclear what particular actions the fundraising vehicle is being investigated for or how it relates to the inquiry into the January 6, 2021, attack, according to The Times.
Federal prosecutors are interested in the formation of the PAC and its spending practices, ABC News reported. A source familiar with the subpoenas' language told CNN that the department may be investigating whether those associated with the PAC employed baseless claims about the 2020 election to defraud people.
Save America did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
The development comes as Trump is mired in a series of ongoing criminal probes by the Justice Department.
On Thursday, the DOJ appealed a federal judge's order that would allow for an independent party to review thousands of documents that were seized from Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort.
In its filing, federal prosecutors wrote that the appeal would "likely" succeed.

Strictly Come Dancing isn’t far off now and already excitement is in the air. So much so, that judge Craig Revel Horwood, couldn’t wait to keep his sassy comments about the contestants to himself. And it seems he has his eyes on actor Bill Bailey.
In a recent chat he noted that Bill will be one to watch this year, but for all the wrong reasons.
When asked how the 55-year-old will perform on the dance floor, Craig remarked: “Terrible.
“I’m looking forward to the disasters!”
Hey ho, we all need a chuckle after very tough and concerning year.

Despite insisting her win was a “fluke”, fans are a little concerned that her experience will give her a “head start”.
Taking to social media, one viewer wrote: “I really like Maisie but not only is she professionally trained already, but she was also trained by Strictly professionals themselves for a Children in Need special.
“As is the case every year, some contestants are given a head start against the others and that isn’t fair.”
Someone else agreed with the observation: “Hoping someone else wins, who is not trained or had a go before.”
American Horror Story‘s next death could be its own. In the wake of Tuesday’s AHS: 1984 climax (read our recap), franchise overlord Ryan Murphy says he’s already “working on an idea” for the 10th and potentially final season of the FX juggernaut.
In an interview with our sister site Deadline, the series’ co-creator and EP reveals that fans “will love [Season 10] because it’s about reuniting fan-favorite actors… because it might be our last season. It’s the last season we have contracted [at FX]. So, I’ve been quietly reaching out to various people. Some people I haven’t reached out to yet because I was like ‘Do I have a role for them?’ So far, everybody I reached out to said ‘Yes’, so that’s been great.”
Murphy teases that the cast members he has invited to participate in Season 10 “helped build this show into what it is, who believed in it from the beginning,” adding, “If you look at the iconography of the first three seasons, you can figure who I’ve gone to and who might be coming back.”
Meanwhile, Murphy — who recently moved his empire from FX parent 20th Century Fox to Netflix — is not completely closing the door to continuing the franchise into an 11th season and beyond. “[FX Chairman] John Landgraf has always been incredibly honorable about American Horror Story and he would obviously like to keep it going, and I’d like to keep it going,” he tells Deadline. “We’re in the middle of negotiations about beyond season 10. We have had conversations about the show going 20 seasons.”
Should FX opt against ordering an 11th season, Murphy says he would absolutely “call up” his current bosses at Netflix to gauge their interest in acquiring the franchise. But he quickly adds that Landgraf has “only ever expressed love and enthusiasm” for the show.
“I have every good intention of it staying there and I think he does too,” Murphy concludes. “We’re talking about it. We’re trying to figure it out.”

Tim, 50, was on hand to help Simon, 55, as Sunday Brunch returned this morning on Channel 4, with the pair joined by singer-songwriter Maverick Sabre in the studio kitchen.
Watching on as the presenters gave a cooking demonstration, several other guests including comedian Jimmy Carr, 46, and Derry Girls actresses Saoirse-Monica Jackson and Siobhan McSweeney were sat on the other side of the studio.
Normally, the hosts of the show try to keep communication going with the guests although there attention is turned to other aspects of the show such as cooking.
However, when it came to turning his attention to reading through the dictionary when discussing how Maverick came up with his stage name, Tim jokingly hit back at the other guests.
Wanting to know more about the singer’s background, Tim asked: “Is it true you choose your name by taking your initials and going to the dictionary and picking the first word?”
Maverick replied: “Yeah, I did. I was fifteen and I was starting out on myspace. My initials were MS, so I found two words for me, matched what I was trying to put out and the message I was trying to put out.”
Tim then said he was going to try the same logic with his co-host Simon, as well as finding an alternative name for himself.
Flicking through the pages, Tim choose ‘thesis’ as his first name but faced some difficulty when it came to trying to locate a word to use as his surname.
Aware their were several eyes focussing on him while he struggled through the pages, Tim jokingly remarked: “Can everyone stop looking at me.
“I feel pressured to find L [in the dictionary],” to which Derry Girl actress Siobhan replied: “You’re on the television. What did you think was going to happen?” referring to people watching him present the show.
The actress then joked: “This isn’t when you decide I don’t like people looking at me.”
After the cooking segment, the presenters joined their guests to speak with cheese expert Morgan McGlynn, as they also delved into tasting the dairy treats.
However, as Morgan tried to explain the specifics about the cheese, the guests and presenters were speaking over one another, commenting on the culinary delights and make some light-hearted jokes.
Viewers on Twitter weren’t too happy with the communication going on in the studio however, as Morgan tried to continue giving her expertise on the cheese.
One posted: “How do people watch @SundayBrunchC4 when all these people are talking over one another during the food tasting. Had to turn it off. #SundayBrunch.”
Another added: “@SundayBrunchC4 All the shouting over each other has hurt my head…what happened to ‘easy like a Sunday morning’ #SundayBrunch.”
Remember Peach? The social network from Vine founder Dom Hoffmann was briefly all the rage, but petered out as the realities of competing with Twitter (and every other social network) set in. It’s been largely coasting since then, but now its team is looking for a helping hand. The Peach team has put out a call (ironically, on Twitter) for a “patron” that could keep its service running. After returning from a roughly two-week outage, the developers realized that passive upkeep “isn’t cutting it” — they need someone who can spare the resources to properly maintain Peach. That isn’t possible for a small company that has “another big project” in the pipeline, according to the creators.
The request calls for an organization that can both spare a support team and at least $ 20,000 per year for server costs. It doesn’t matter whether or not the benefactor is a for-profit outlet, but it needs to have the “right intentions,” according to the Peach crew.
That might be a tough ask when Peach isn’t nearly as big as it was early on. Whoever takes over its operations might have to treat Peach like a charity case and assume it won’t grow. Consider this, though: even if Peach doesn’t find a savior, it’ll still have outlasted social projects from Facebook and other much larger outfits.
