  • LaVar Ball is determined to get all three of his sons to play on the same team, preferably with the Los Angeles Lakers.
  • Ball has now threatened to have Lonzo Ball leave the Lakers if they don’t sign his brothers, LiAngelo Ball and LaMelo Ball.

LaVar Ball is determined to see all three of his sons play together on the same NBA team — preferably for the Lakers — and is already making threats to try and force the Lakers’ hand.

According to Lithuanian basketball reporter Donatas Urbonas, Ball is now threatening to have Lonzo Ball leave the Lakers and is already making plans in case LiAngelo Ball is not on the Lakers’ radar.

Lonzo Ball joins Lakers elite https://briefnews.eu/lonzo-ball-joins-lakers-elite/ https://briefnews.eu/lonzo-ball-joins-lakers-elite/#respond Mon, 20 Nov 2017 08:34:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lonzo-ball-joins-lakers-elite/ LONZO Ball has bounced back from three down games to record his second career triple-double, while helping the Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Denver Nuggets 127-109.

The numbers during Ball’s previous three encounters made for disastrous reading as he averaged five points per game, 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 26 per cent from the field and a horrendous nine per cent from beyond the arc.

He was able to put those woes behind him as he led the Lakers to only their second win from their past seven games with 11 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists.

A second career triple-double means Ball joins an elite list of players throughout NBA history to record the feat in their first 17 games.

Names on the list include Oscar Robertson (3 games), Hambone Williams (10), Magic Johnson (12), Connie Hawks (14) and fellow rookie Ben Simmons (9).

Ball and Simmons also set an NBA record, becoming the first pair of rookies with multiple triple-doubles before their 20th games in the same season.

The records don’t stop there though for Ball.

At the tender age of 20-years and 23 days old, Ball equalled LeBron James’ NBA record as the youngest player to record their first two triple-doubles.

And finally, Ball becomes only the third player in the history of the Los Angeles Lakers to ever record multiple triple-doubles in their rookie season. Joining legends Magic Johnson and Jerry West.

Speaking after the game Ball was enjoying the feat the second time around as it came along with the victory.

“This one is a lot better,” Ball said.

“I actually like this one. Just keep building on it.”

For Denver the loss was soured further after coach Mike Malone and marquee big man Nikola Jokic were both ejected in the second quarter.

Malone wasn’t happy with a no-call against Jokic under the basket and stepped onto the court as he furiously confronted one of the referees.

CHEF CURRY HEATS UP

After an astonishing comeback against the Philadelphia 76ers in their last outing, the Golden State Warriors ensured they weren’t slow starters as they jumped the Brooklyn Nets with a one-sided first half.

Without superstar forward Kevin Durant in the line-up, Steph Curry took control of the contest and torched the Nets with 39 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, Curry was plagued by foul trouble throughout and as the Nets came surging home in the second half, Curry picked up his sixth foul with three minutes remaining and the lead only sitting at five points.

Thankfully his back-court buddy Klay Thompson was able to step in and help the Warriors get over the line 118-111, claiming their thirteenth win of the season.

Coach Steve Kerr praised the work of his dual MVP point guard however, said he got a little ahead of himself.

“Obviously, he was brilliant I mean in terms of his scoring and shot-making but I thought in the second half he got a little wild,” Kerr said.

“He kind of had his way out there for a while and he got so excited that he probably went over the top and started making some mistakes.”

The Warriors next game will see them welcome Kevin Durant’s former team the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday in what should be an enticing affair.

If Durant plays that is. He is currently listed as day to day with an ankle injury and could miss the encounter.

  • UCLA and Georgia Tech are set to open the NCAA basketball season on Friday with a game in Shanghai, China.
  • UCLA freshman LiAngelo Ball, brother of NBA rookie Lonzo Ball, was reportedly questioned, along with teammates Cody Riley and Jalen Hill, over an alleged shoplifting incident, and later arrested.

LiAngelo Ball, brother of Los Angeles Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball, and second-oldest son of LaVar Ball, was among the three UCLA basketball players arrested in China and questioned about an alleged shoplifting incident, according to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.

Ball was in China with the Bruins as the team prepared to open the NCAA basketball season against Georgia Tech on Friday in Shanghai.

Ball, along with UCLA teammates and fellow freshmen Cody Riley and Jalen Hill, were reportedly questioned about a theft at a Louis Vuitton store located next to the team’s hotel.

UCLA released a statement on the incident, saying “We are aware of a situation involving UCLA student-athletes in Hangzhou, China. The University is cooperating fully with local authorities on this matter, and we have no further comment at this time.”

Three players from Georgia Tech were also questioned by police regarding the matter, but were later cleared of any wrongdoing, according to the school.

“During the questioning, it was determined that Georgia Tech student-athletes were not involved in the activities being investigated,” Georgia Tech said in the statement. “They have resumed their scheduled activities in advance of Saturday’s season opener versus UCLA in Shanghai.”

Lonzo punked: ‘Weak-ass motherf*****’ https://briefnews.eu/lonzo-punked-weak-ass-motherf/ https://briefnews.eu/lonzo-punked-weak-ass-motherf/#respond Fri, 20 Oct 2017 22:27:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lonzo-punked-weak-ass-motherf/ PATRICK Beverley epitomises Lonzo Ball’s NBA challenge.

Beverley, the Clippers point guard, had been tweeting about shutting down the No. 2 pick over a month ago. Beverley was outside the Lakers locker room screaming curses at Ball.

“Weak-ass motherf*****. Bring his ass out on the court with me and I will tear his ass up,” Beverley shouted, according to The Undefeated.

And that’s exactly what happened in the Clippers’ 108-92 win, with Ball limited to three points, nine rebounds and four assists on 1/6 shooting.

“I told him, due to all the riffraff his dad brings, he’s going to get a lot of people coming at him and he has to be ready for that,” Beverley told Sports Illustrated. “He has to perform on a stage like this every night. It’s not only going to be me. It’s going to be a lot of people trying to go at his head.”

Beverley, who was traded from the Rockets to the Clippers this off-season, is an extreme and in a way could not have been a worse matchup for Ball in his debut.

He played in Ukraine, Greece and Russia before sticking with the Rockets in 2013 and becoming one of the top defensive guards in the league. Beverley lives with the chip on his shoulder and thrives on it.

But he will not be alone in his determination to shut up Lonzo’s father, LaVar, even as Lonzo has quietly impressed teammates with his mild manner.

“Right now he’s got a lot of pressure on him — he’s got a lot of added pressure from his Dad continuing to praise him and talking about what he’s going to be able to do,” Chicago Bulls legend Scottie Pippen said.

“He’s really just put a target on his back. A lot of players are seeing that and reading it. It’s not fair for him as a player because its unwanted attention.

“He’d just want to go out and play basketball, learn the game, develop and get better. But the players around the league are not going to allow that to happen as long as his Dad is standing on the sideline praising him and putting him ahead of almost every guy in the game in terms of his talent. He has to sit back, his father, and allow his son to develop as a player.”

LaVar, as if to prove Beverley and Pippen’s point, was there mid-court after the game being interviewed by ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.

“Yeah, you shut the mothers***** down,” LaVar said. “And your check still ain’t going to go no higher than what it is. Yeah, you shut him down. OK … Who is Patrick Beverley?

“He played all last year and nobody said nothing about him. Now we are looking at your first game. Why? Because Lonzo’s name is attached to it … So you got to be (all hard). Let’s see what you do the next five games, if you are going to be pumped up towards everybody like that and go back to your 0/5 shooting and your two or three rebounds. Nobody is going to care about you. But you put my son’s name in it and you put my name in it, now you got some action and you got some people talking.”

LaVar should worry less about Beverley’s intensity, which will remain intact for all 82 Clippers games, and that of Lonzo’s matchup night in and night out.

But Lonzo said he understands the challenge and is ready to embrace it.

“I’ll be ready,” Ball told The Vertical. “I have to show it in my game, because when we win, people won’t talk. But if we lose, people will think it affects me. It’s wins and losses for me. We know it’s a process.”

Clippers guard who harassed Lonzo Ball in his NBA debut also offered him a grave warning https://briefnews.eu/clippers-guard-who-harassed-lonzo-ball-in-his-nba-debut-also-offered-him-a-grave-warning/ https://briefnews.eu/clippers-guard-who-harassed-lonzo-ball-in-his-nba-debut-also-offered-him-a-grave-warning/#respond Fri, 20 Oct 2017 14:30:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/clippers-guard-who-harassed-lonzo-ball-in-his-nba-debut-also-offered-him-a-grave-warning/ lonzo ball patrick beverleyHarry How/Getty

  • Lonzo Ball struggled in his first NBA regular season game.
  • Los Angeles Clippers guard Patrick Beverley was on Ball’s case throughout the game, pressuring him, trash-talking, and playing physically.
  • Beverley said it won’t be the last time players go after Ball because of the attention around his family.

Lonzo Ball received a cold welcome to the NBA on Thursday from Los Angeles Clippers point guard Patrick Beverley.

Beverley, one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA, made it his personal mission to harass Ball in his NBA debut, helping the Clippers beat the Los Angeles Lakers, 108-92.

Ball shot just 1-of-6 for three points, with nine rebounds, four assists, and two turnovers, struggling with Beverley’s defensive pressure and aggressive play. According to ESPN, in the 29 plays that Beverley guarded Ball, the Lakers shot just 7-of-21 with seven turnovers, an effect of their primary playmaker getting locked up.

In between plays, Beverley stalked Ball, trash-talking him. Early in the game, he crowded Ball on an inbounds play, prompting Ball to push him away. Moments later, Beverley hip-checked Ball to the ground, drawing a foul and proudly raising his hand.

Beverley also picked Ball’s pocket for a smooth layup in transition.

After the game, Beverley told reporters that he offered a grave warning to Ball that ties back to his father, LaVar.

“I just had to set the tone,” Beverley said. “I told him after the game that due to all the riffraff his dad brings, that he’s going to get a lot of people coming at him. I let him know that after the game. What a better way to start than spending 94 feet guarding him tonight — welcome the young guy to the NBA.”

Indeed, LaVar Ball did seem to motivate Beverley. Back in September, Beverley had already locked in on his target.

Ball, to his credit, handled it well. He maintained his composure and had a few nice drives that led to assists, at times showing off his ball-handling skills to evade Beverley.

“That’s basketball,” Ball said after the game of Beverley’s defensive pressure. “He plays 94 feet, that’s what he’s supposed to do. He’s a good defender.”

As Beverley said, he certainly won’t be the last player to go after Ball, given the amount of attention he has received. Ball, by all accounts, is quiet and humble, but his father’s antics has drawn the ire of NBA players.

Not every point guard will lock up Ball like Beverley did, but Beverley also isn’t in the offensive class of players like Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook, and Chris Paul, all of whom Ball will see multiple times this season. All of them will look to make sure Ball has long, tough nights. Welcome to the NBA.

Lonzo Ball recovered from his disappointing debut and showed why the NBA world is enamored with him https://briefnews.eu/lonzo-ball-recovered-from-his-disappointing-debut-and-showed-why-the-nba-world-is-enamored-with-him/ https://briefnews.eu/lonzo-ball-recovered-from-his-disappointing-debut-and-showed-why-the-nba-world-is-enamored-with-him/#respond Mon, 10 Jul 2017 20:27:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lonzo-ball-recovered-from-his-disappointing-debut-and-showed-why-the-nba-world-is-enamored-with-him/ Lonzo Ball summer leagueAP Photo/John Locher

After months of waiting that included bold predictions, laughs, and general absurdity, the NBA world finally got their first look at Lonzo Ball during his Summer League debut with the Los Angeles Lakers over the weekend.

On Friday, Ball took the court as a Laker for the first time at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. The Big Baller Brand was present in the arena as well, with Lonzo’s headline-grabbing father LaVar in attendance and younger brother and Chino Hills High School standout LaMelo taking part in a few shooting competitions during timeouts.

It didn’t take long for the Ball hype to feel real, with Lonzo finding teammate Brandon Ingram with a beautiful alley-oop for the very first points of the game.

After that intial burst however, Ball’s debut was not a great one. Lonzo went just 2-15 from the floor, and an absolutely atrocious 1-11 from beyond the arc in a game the Lakers lost to the Clippers in overtime 96-93.

After the game, LaVar said that it was his worst game ever, but noted that he’d not been discouraged, because Lonzo had still kept the Lakers competitive in the game despite his poor performance. He also noted all the Lakers fans in attendance. “[I’ll] show you what he did do,” LaVar said. “Look how many Laker fans out here. Changed the culture. That’s what it’s about. It ain’t about him being a superstar, it’s about him changing the culture.”

LaVar went on to say in his gregarious tone, “Instead of going to the movies, EVERYBODY coming to watch the Lakers and Big Baller Brand.”

Online, some of those who have not bought into the Big Baller Brand hype took a moment to roast Lonzo on his lackluster showing.

Thankfully for the Ball family, Lonzo didn’t have to wait long for his shot at redemption, as the Lakers had another Summer League game the very next day in a matchup against the Boston Celtics and their 2017-draftee standout Jayson Tatum.

In front of the first-ever, sold-out crowd in Summer League history, Ball put up a triple-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists on the night. Ball’s superior court vision was on full display for the packed house, as many of his assists came from impressive and unexpected angles.

This no-look dish to Ivica Zubac was another highlight of the night, much to the delight of Magic Johnson.

After the game, Lonzo was encouraged by his improved performance but still disappointed by the result, a loss.

“I definitely felt better — better game — but like I said, we didn’t get the win, and that’s all we care about,” Ball said according to the New York Times. “So until we win, we aren’t going to be happy.”

In just two games the NBA world got to see a wide range of what Ball is capable of. Chances are throughout his long NBA career he’ll show more of both those jaw-dropping passes and a few more nights of rough shooting. For now, Ball would just like to get a win under his belt.

The Lakers play one more game on Monday night before the Summer League playoffs begin.

Nike, Under Armour, and Adidas are reportedly spurning Lonzo Ball after his father pitched an unprecedented business idea https://briefnews.eu/nike-under-armour-and-adidas-are-reportedly-spurning-lonzo-ball-after-his-father-pitched-an-unprecedented-business-idea/ https://briefnews.eu/nike-under-armour-and-adidas-are-reportedly-spurning-lonzo-ball-after-his-father-pitched-an-unprecedented-business-idea/#respond Fri, 28 Apr 2017 17:45:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nike-under-armour-and-adidas-are-reportedly-spurning-lonzo-ball-after-his-father-pitched-an-unprecedented-business-idea/ Lonzo BallMatt York/AP

Lonzo Ball has declared for the NBA Draft after one season at UCLA and his business team’s first moves are already raising eyebrows thanks to the unusual demands of his boisterous father, LaVar Ball.

For most basketball players who are projected to go at or near the top of the draft, their first income won’t be their rookie contract, but rather their first shoe deal. But for Ball that is now up in the air as Darren Rovell of ESPN reports that Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour have all told Ball that they are not interested.

According to Rovell, the shoe giants walked away after LaVar “offered something that has no precedent.”

“In his meetings with all three companies, LaVar insisted that they license his upstart Big Baller Brand from him,” wrote Rovell. “He also showed the companies a shoe prototype that he hoped would be Lonzo’s first shoe.”

In other words, the Balls are not looking to signed an endorsement deal. Rather, they want their personal brand, Big Baller Brand, to become something more akin to Jordan Brand, a branch of Nike that grew out of Michael Jordan’s Air Jordan shoe line.

LaVar Ball confirmed that sentiment to Rovell when he compared his family’s brand to Uber.

“We’ve said from the beginning, we aren’t looking for an endorsement deal,” LaVar told ESPN. “We’re looking for co-branding, a true partner. But they’re not ready for that because they’re not used to that model. But hey, the taxi industry wasn’t ready for Uber, either.”

With the big traditional shoe companies seemingly out of the picture, Ball told Rovell that he will now reach out to Chinese brands, such as Peak, Li-Ning, and Anta.

Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors has a shoe deal with Anta.

Ball also confirmed that they do have a prototype shoe, noting that he has been “working on that shoe ever since my boys were born.”

NBA Mock Draft: Lonzo Ball Fit Well With 76ers? https://briefnews.eu/nba-mock-draft-lonzo-ball-fit-well-with-76ers/ https://briefnews.eu/nba-mock-draft-lonzo-ball-fit-well-with-76ers/#respond Tue, 24 Jan 2017 08:46:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nba-mock-draft-lonzo-ball-fit-well-with-76ers/ Lonzo Ball

The NBA draft is only six months away, but the drafting process/evaluation period apparently has gone underway. Currently, if the season ended today, the Boston Celtics would have the first pick of the 2017 NBA Draft due to a trade from the Brooklyn Nets. Next in the order is a frequent visitor into the NBA’s lottery, the Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers have held picks within the NBA Lottery for the past four years. The 76ers currently hold a 9-24 record, which is not only second worst in the Eastern Conference but also in the NBA. According to NESN.com writer Nicholas Goss, he has the 76ers picking UCLA freshman point guard Lonzo Ball as the second pick in this year’s upcoming NBA Draft.

Ball, the prodigious guard from UCLA, stands 6’6 and 190 pounds. He’s averaging 14.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 8.1 assists per game. In high school, his talents got him a scholarship offer from UCLA, in which he signed as a sophomore in January of 2014. In high school, he showed off his exceptional all-around game that put him on the radar for not only college coaches, but NBA coaches, too. Averaging a triple-double his senior season (23.9 points, 11.3 rebounds and 11.7 assists) is no small feat; comparisons to former NBA guard and present Milwaukee Bucks coach Jason Kidd began to become the norm. CSN Philly’s Steven Tydings explained why Ball is one of the nation’s best point guards.

“Ball also had the choice defensive assignment of Dillon Brooks, who he held to just nine for 20 shooting. However, Brooks made the game-winning shot over Ball. The UCLA freshman still finished with 14 points and six assists despite a poor start to the game. He was involved in every part of the Bruins’ offense in the second half, pushing the ball in transition and putting pressure on the Ducks’ defense.

“Ball and the Bruins rebounded Friday. On 7 for 14 shooting (4 for 8 from three), Ball had a career-high 23 points to go with seven rebounds and six assists in a win at Oregon State, 76-63. While he has a very unconventional three-point motion, it works quite well and makes him a threat from all over the court, maybe even halfcourt like his brother.”

Will Ball become on of the top selections this year in the NBA Draft? The signs point to yes. The 76ers are slowly but surely building through the NBA Draft, with selections of Ben Simmons in last year’s draft and Joel Embiid, who’s playing in his first NBA season after missing two full NBA seasons dealing with a nagging foot injury. Embiid has been a surprise for the NBA this season, registering 19 points, seven rounds and two blocks per game. Embiid is doing this on a team-mandated minute restriction. Once Embiid becomes healthy, Simmons becomes healthy and if the 76ers draft Ball at point guard, the NBA could see the 76ers slowly evolve into a decent NBA team.

Building through the draft isn’t as popular as it used to be, but still very common. The Golden State Warriors built their nucleus of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green through the draft over four years. The Oklahoma City Thunder once had a nucleus; Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden in which all three were drafted in the 2007 and 2008 drafts, respectively. Of course, Harden was traded to the Houston Rockets and Kevin Durant shocked the NBA by signing with the Warriors this past offseason. So in the NBA, super teams can be built, but so can teams through the NBA Draft.

It may not be the 76ers, though. There’s still time left in the NBA season, and there are plenty of teams who could have an uprising/decline. But for now, Philadelphia has the upper hand for one of the NBA’s prized possessions of the future.
