Russia developing long-range supersonic drone & unmanned high-speed helicopter https://briefnews.eu/russia-developing-long-range-supersonic-drone-unmanned-high-speed-helicopter/ https://briefnews.eu/russia-developing-long-range-supersonic-drone-unmanned-high-speed-helicopter/#respond Sun, 25 Feb 2018 13:07:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russia-developing-long-range-supersonic-drone-unmanned-high-speed-helicopter/

Research and development is under way for Russia’s long-rage supersonic drone and high-speed helicopter, Alexander Nemov, deputy head of the Russian Air Force’s research institute, told Interfax. The unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will be able to perform “automated supersonic flying missions” and hit enemy targets at various distances. Earlier, Nemov said Russia will continue developing miscellaneous drone platforms, both armed and unarmed.

  • Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said in early January that the Tu-160M2 will make its maiden flight by the end of the month.
  • With January coming to a close, we’ll soon see if the Rogozin’s statement is accurate.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said in early January that the Tu-160M2 will make its maiden flight by the end of the month, according to Alert 5.

We saw the announcement when it was retweeted by United Aircraft Corporation, which builds the planes.

The Tu-160M2 is an upgrade to the Tu-160M and original Tu-160, but Russian media has reported that it’s expected to be a new bomber in all but name.

It was scheduled to first fly in February, but Tupolev, a subsidiary of Russia’s UAC, said it would fly before that, Alert 5 reported.

Col. Gen. Viktor Bondarev, commander of the Russian Air Force, previously said that the upgraded bomber “is expected to make its first flight by the end of 2018, followed by full-scale production in 2021.”

It should be noted, however, that Russia has made predictions about its military technology and weapons that never happen. For example, it claimed in 2015 that it would make 2,300 T-14 Armata battle tanks by 2020, but later had to scale it back to 100 by 2020 because of budgetary problems.

Six Russian Tu-22M3 strategic bombers conducted an airstrike against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists in the Euphrates river valley in Syria’s province of Deir ez-Zor on Sunday. The long-range aircraft targeted amassed terrorist forces and outposts, the Russian Defense Ministry said. The strikes were confirmed through technical means of objective control, it added. The Tu-22M3 planes, which flew to Syria from Russia, received air cover from Su-30SM and Su-35S fighter jets, which were scrambled from Russia’s Khmeimim Airbase in western Syria. Upon completing the mission, all the aircraft returned to their home bases.

Toyota will show fuel-cell bus, long-range passenger car in Tokyo https://briefnews.eu/toyota-will-show-fuel-cell-bus-long-range-passenger-car-in-tokyo/ https://briefnews.eu/toyota-will-show-fuel-cell-bus-long-range-passenger-car-in-tokyo/#respond Wed, 18 Oct 2017 20:24:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/toyota-will-show-fuel-cell-bus-long-range-passenger-car-in-tokyo/ Toyota may be playing catchup to other automakers on pure EVs, but it certainly has not given up its quest for fuel-cell vehicles. On Wednesday, it previewed two models it will display at the Tokyo Motor Show.

One is a minivan. Or a crossover. Or a rolling conversation pit with six captain’s chairs that all swivel toward the middle, a sure sign that it’s not just hydrogen-powered but autonomous as well. Called the Fine-Comfort Ride, the eggplant-colored car has in-wheel motors to help maximize interior space. But its most notable feature: A stated range of 621 miles. That’s a lot of opportunity to swivel in your captain’s chair.

The other vehicle is a bus called the Sora (for “sky, ocean, river, air”). It can carry 79 people (56 of them straphangers), and it’s more than a concept. Toyota will build 100 copies for use in Tokyo during the 2020 Olympics. It’s sleek (for a bus), is equipped with hi-def cameras all around for spotting pedestrians and cyclists, has acceleration-control technology that keeps things smooth for passengers, and it can automatically steer and brake itself to get within an inch or two of a stop to make boarding and egress easier for those who are mobility impaired or pushing a stroller.

Its two fuel-cell stacks are akin to the system in the Toyota Mirai, and it has 10 (count ’em, 10!) high-pressure hydrogen tanks.

The Toyota Motor Show opens next week, on Oct. 25.

Hyundai shifts to long-range premium electric cars https://briefnews.eu/hyundai-shifts-to-long-range-premium-electric-cars/ https://briefnews.eu/hyundai-shifts-to-long-range-premium-electric-cars/#respond Fri, 18 Aug 2017 06:34:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hyundai-shifts-to-long-range-premium-electric-cars/

Hyundai Motor Co said on Thursday it was placing electric vehicles at the center of its product strategy – one that includes plans for a premium long-distance electric car as it seeks to catch up to Tesla and other rivals.

Like Toyota Motor Corp, Hyundai had initially championed fuel cell technology as the future of eco-friendly vehicles but has found itself shifting electric as Tesla shot to prominence and battery-powered cars have gained government backing in China.

Toyota is now also working on longer distance, fast-charging electric vehicles, local media have reported.

The South Korean automaker is planning to launch an electric sedan under its high-end Genesis brand in 2021 with a range of 500 km (310 miles) per charge. It will also introduce an electric version of its Kona small sport utility vehicle (SUV) with a range of 390 km in the first half of next year.

“We’re strengthening our eco-friendly car strategy, centering on electric vehicles,” Executive Vice President Lee Kwang-guk told a news conference, calling the technology mainstream and realistic.

The automaker and affiliate Kia Motors Corp, which together rank fifth in global vehicle sales, also said they were adding three plug-in vehicles to their plans for eco-friendly cars, bringing the total to 31 models by 2020.

Underscoring Hyundai’s electric shift, those plans include eight battery-powered and two fuel-cell vehicles – a contrast to its 2014 announcement for 22 models, of which only two were slated to be battery-powered.

Hyundai also confirmed a Reuters report that it is developing its first dedicated electric vehicle platform, which will allow the company to produce multiple models with longer driving ranges.

Last year, it launched its first mass-market pure electric car IONIQ, but the vehicle’s per-charge driving range is much shorter than offerings from Tesla and General Motors (GM.N).

Hydrogen SUV

Hyundai unveiled a near production version of its new fuel cell SUV with a driving range of more than 580 km per charge, compared with the 415 km for its current Tucson fuel cell SUV.

The mid-sized SUV will be launched in Korea early next year, followed by U.S. and European markets.

A fuel cell electric bus is slated to be unveiled late this year, while a sedan-type fuel cell car is also planned. Even so, analysts noted that gaining traction with fuel cells was going to be a long hard slog partly due to a lack of charging infrastructure.

“Hyundai will achieve economies of scale for fuel cell cars by 2035 at the earliest,” said Lee Hang-koo, a senior research fellow at Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade.

“Before that, Hyundai has no choice but to rely on battery cars,” he said.

Hyundai launched the world’s first mass-produced fuel cell vehicle in 2013, dubbed the Tucson Fuel Cell, but sales trailed Toyota’s rival offering, Mirai.

Hyundai has sold about 862 of Tucson Fuel Cell vehicles since its 2013 launch, while Toyota sold some 3,700 Mirai Fuel Cell vehicles since its 2014 launch.

In Korea, there are 10 fuel cell charging stations, only one tenth of 100 in Japan, Hyundai said.

Toyota reportedly plans long-range, fast-charging solid-state EV by 2022 https://briefnews.eu/toyota-reportedly-plans-long-range-fast-charging-solid-state-ev-by-2022/ https://briefnews.eu/toyota-reportedly-plans-long-range-fast-charging-solid-state-ev-by-2022/#respond Tue, 25 Jul 2017 13:16:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/toyota-reportedly-plans-long-range-fast-charging-solid-state-ev-by-2022/

TOKYO – Toyota is working on an electric car powered by a new type of battery that significantly increases driving range and reduces charging time, aiming to begin sales in 2022, the Chunichi Shimbun daily reported on Tuesday.

Toyota’s new electric car, to be built on an all-new platform, will use all-solid-state batteries, allowing it to be recharged in just a few minutes, the newspaper said, without citing sources.

By contrast, current electric vehicles (EVs), which use lithium-ion batteries, need 20-30 minutes to recharge even with fast chargers and typically have a range of just 300-400 kilometers (185-250 miles).

Toyota has decided to sell the new model in Japan as early as 2022, the paper said.

Toyota spokeswoman Kayo Doi said the company would not comment on specific product plans but added that it aimed to commercialize all-solid-state batteries by the early 2020s.

Japan’s biggest automaker is looking to close the gap with EV leaders such as Nissan and Tesla as battery-powered cars gain traction around the globe as a viable emission-free alternative to conventional cars.

Whether Toyota will be able to leapfrog its rivals remains to be seen, however, as mass production requires a far more stringent level of quality control and reliability.

“There’s a pretty long distance between the lab bench and manufacturing,” said CLSA auto analyst Christopher Richter. “2022 is ages away, and a lot can change in the meantime.” How quickly the new EVs will catch on would also depend largely on battery costs.

Having long touted hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles and plug-in hybrids as the most sensible technology to make cars greener, Toyota last year said it wanted to add long-range EVs to its lineup, and set up a new in-house unit, headed by President Akio Toyoda, to develop and market EVs.

Toyota is reportedly planning to begin mass-producing EVs in China, the world’s biggest auto market, as early as in 2019, although that model would be based on the existing C-HR sport utility vehicle and use lithium-ion batteries.

Other automakers such as BMW are also working on developing all-solid-state batteries, eyeing mass production in the next 10 years.

Solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes rather than liquid ones, making them safer than lithium-ion batteries currently on the market.

–

Honda has always kept a front-facing image of being focused on efficiency. The automaker was the first to sell a hybrid in the United States—the original Insight two-seater, back in 1999. In recent years, however, hybrids have made up less than 1 percent of the company’s U.S. sales. When it comes to hybrids and plug-ins, Honda has a lot of catching up to do.

–

But Honda has big plans to address that. By 2030, the company aims to electrify 65 percent of its global fleet. Battery-electric vehicles will make up some of that, but hybrids and plug-in hybrids will play a major role in meeting the goal.

–

In a recent media panel, global president and CEO Takahiro Hachigo gave a few more details about how the automaker is going to reach that ambitious target, as well as its aim for 2050—to cut its total CO2 emissions to half of what they were in 2000.

–

2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid

–

After the reintroduction of the Honda Accord hybrid this past year, a trio of new Honda Clarity models is a start, showing how the automaker can cover the green-vehicle bases with three different powertrains: fuel cell, electric, and plug-in hybrid. However, this model, with its quirky styling, large-sedan packaging, and highish prices, still doesn’t directly take on mainstream green cars such as the Toyota Prius or the Hyundai Ioniq. The Clarity fits right in with what we said in reviewing the original Insight 17 years ago: “High-mileage cars are to the auto industry what art-house films are to movies.”

–

Look Out, Prius (Again)

–

What actually will make a play for mass appeal is a standalone Honda hybrid expected to be revealed at the Tokyo auto show later this year and slated to go on sale in 2018. The U.S.-built dedicated hybrid won’t be a variant of a mainstream entry like the Civic but a compact vehicle with its own sheetmetal.

–

Honda hasn’t yet disclosed whether the new model will be a passenger car or a light truck. With Toyota Prius sales down significantly versus several years ago despite a recent redesign, and with Hyundai Ioniq sales trailing those of the closely related Kia Niro, which has more upright crossover packaging, there may be an incentive for Honda to cast its dedicated hybrid as a crossover utility vehicle this time around.

–

Honda i-MMDHonda’s move toward greater electrification also will include new hybrid versions of existing models. Honda has announced that it will put the two-motor (i-MMD) system already employed in the Honda Accord hybrid (and soon Clarity plug-in hybrid), into a light-truck model—expected to be CR-V, with other models potentially to follow. One company official also recently confirmed the possibility of applying the three-motor hybrid system from the Acura MDX Sport Hybrid to the Honda Odyssey minivan. Such a move might broaden the Odyssey’s appeal, as the new variant would not only deliver better mileage but also offer all-wheel drive.

–

Long-Range EVs and Fuel Cells

–

The automaker is also investing in the development of longer-range electric vehicles—including one that will arrive in 2019 for the China market. That’s considered to be a developmental step on the way to another long-range Honda EV that is several years out. Hachigo said that Honda aims to keep motor and battery technology in-house—or in joint ventures, such as the one announced earlier this year with Hitachi Automotive.

–

“We are not trying to catch up with the others; we’re trying to achieve something very unique to us,” asserted Hachigo. Honda-developed fuel-cell systems, and Honda’s partnership to build them at higher volume with GM, will be still be an emphasis, especially with larger vehicles, and “the ultimate type of ZEV [zero-emission vehicle],” he said.

–

–

The CEO hinted that we might not see another project like the Clarity, with its dedicated platform, regional appeal, and relatively low-volume intent. Indeed, Honda will have to move beyond that strategy if it’s going to raise its profile in the green-car space.
