The Ethereum blockchain completed its long-awaited Merge update early Thursday morning, the crypto project's cofounder Vitalik Buterin has said.
The upgrade promises to cut energy consumption for the network, which underpins the world's second-biggest cryptocurrency, ether. That should make it a more attractive asset for institutional investors, according to analysts.
"And we finalized!" Buterin said in a tweet just before 3 a.m. ET. "Happy merge all. This is a big moment for the Ethereum ecosystem. Everyone who helped make the merge happen should feel very proud today."
Ether was up 2.2% after the announcement, trading at $ 1,620 at last check Thursday. Leading crypto token bitcoin was up just 0.3% at $ 20,170.
The merge, which was in the works for almost seven years, moves ethereum from a proof-of-work to a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism — meaning that gas fees, or costs per transaction, will fall for the token. It should also make processing of transactions faster.
In a proof-of-stake mechanism, people are tapped to validate transactions according to the number of coins they hold and are willing to offer as a kind of down payment.
It's less energy-intensive than the proof-of-work mechanism, where computers compete against each other to solve complex puzzles to verify the network and mine ether.
Experts expect the upgrade could slash Ethereum's energy consumption by 99%. Buterin has previously said the aim is to eventually cut the blockchain's energy usage by up to 99.5%.
The upgrade could make ether more palatable to institutional investors that need to consider environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, analysts said. It could bring in firms that were shut out of the cryptocurrency because of its heavy energy costs.
"This improvement in environmental outcomes will likely open the door for institutional ESG investors to invest in ethereum," Deutsche Bank economist Marion Labouré said. "Desire for sustainable alternatives exists in the crypto space."
The Ethereum blockchain underpins some of the biggest and most popular Web3 and crypto projects, such as NFTs and smart contracts in decentralized finance.
Ether has fallen 56% in 2022 after surging five-fold last year. The Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes have weighed on investors' appetite for riskier assets.

]]>Scrooge McDuck and his flock of unflappable adventurers ruffled their last feathers on Monday with the highly anticipated series finale of DuckTales.
The reboot’s three-part swan song was full of satisfying developments, from the gang’s final battle against F.O.W.L. to the emotional reveal about Webby’s true connection to the McDuck family. But what we need to discuss right now is that incredible, chill-inducing cameo from Keith David, which finally (sort of) brought Gargoyles into the DuckTales universe.
Among the episode’s many — actually, make that Manny — revelations, we learned that the hoof-clapping intern is actually a Headless Man Horse… of the Apocalypse! He was brought to life via the magic of the Blessed Bagpipe in a sequence that included a taste of the classic Gargoyles theme song, as well as David speaking his character’s iconic “I live again!” line.
“Manny the The Headless Man Horse turned into a cult favorite on the show and ended up turning into a major player in every finale,” executive producer Francisco Angones tells TVLine. “I always liked the idea that the strangest looking dude on our show just wanted to be a regular guy. Personally, he’s the most normal dude in the world. We were toying around with the idea of doing a family reunion episode — and maybe even a full Manny episode — in Season 3, and [executive producer Matt Youngberg] was the one who came up with the idea that ‘Well, of course, Manny is the Man Horse of the Apocalypse.’ And we also set up the Blessed Bagpipes, because we knew that Gargoyles was the one show we hadn’t touched.”
Gargoyles, like the original DuckTales, aired during the beloved Disney Afternoon block of programming throughout the 1990s. The DuckTales reboot has managed to work in nearly every other show from the lineup — including Bonkers, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, Goof Troop, Quack Pack, TaleSpin and even Adventures of the Gummi Bears — but Goliath and his winged pals never made an appearance, much to fans’ dismay.
Angones explains, “We wanted to reference all of the Disney Afternoon shows, but it was tricky when those shows involved humans. With the exception of Quack Pack, we didn’t do humans. We’re not saying [Manny] is Goliath. It’s more of a fun little Easter egg. One of Matt’s favorite design elements in the entire show are those little claws that hook Goliath’s wings like a cape. Manny has tiny hooves attached to his. And Keith was just so game to do it. He said, ‘Anything to keep Goliath alive, I am here for.’”
The executive producer says it was harder to get outside Disney characters approved early into DuckTales‘ run, “but after [they saw what we did with] Darkwing Duck, they started to trust us a bit more. There’s a certain mouse that remained off-limits to us for corporate reasons, but other than that, they’ve been very supportive and understanding.”
“When you reboot something, you can’t just make more of something,” he says. “You have to make it the best version of the show you think you remember in your head, because kids have that imagination to build out those worlds. When I was watching the Disney Afternoon, because there were all these little Easter eggs hidden throughout, I assumed it was a shared universe. Just as DuckTales launched this golden age of the Disney Afternoon, we thought, ‘What if we took that made it literal?’ It felt like something that kids would want.”

Mike and Harvey are easing back into their brotherly banter like no time has passed at all on next week’s Suits.
In the above sneak peek from the episode — airing next Wednesday, Aug. 14 at 9/8c on USA Network — original series star Patrick J. Adams reprises his role as legal whiz Mike, who’s onto Harvey’s fake renter scheme. While the two keep things light and breezy in the scene, the reunion will also take a dramatic turn when the lawyers find themselves on opposite sides of the courtroom.
As viewers might recall, Harvey gave Samantha one of his favorite clients in the season opener. “Mike comes back and sort of picks a fight with Harvey and is coming after him to sue that longtime client,” showrunner Aaron Korsh tells TVLine, “and he wants to do it in a fun way. He doesn’t want to get embroiled into a big fight with Harvey, but he wants to go toe-to-toe with his old mentor. So he sort of slaps that client with a lawsuit, and he delivers it to Harvey,” not knowing that Samantha now represents the client.
“In true Harvey fashion, Harvey doesn’t tell Samantha, because Harvey doesn’t want to give it to Samantha,” Korsh continues. “He wants to take on Mike, but Samantha finds out about it, so it ends up becoming a little bit of an embroiling with Samantha and Harvey against Mike.”

Jon Jones shadowboxes ahead of the UFC 197 openworkouts (Image: GETTY)
Last month, USADA announced that they’d given Jones a 15-month retroactive suspension for his second doping violation, which took place before his UFC 214 grudge match with Daniel Cormier.
That test discovered trace amounts of the anabolic steroid Turanibol in the New York native’s system.
Jones was initially staring down the barrel of a four-year suspension, though that was reduced by 30 months as he provided USADA with ‘special assistance.’
Many interpreted that as Jones ‘snitching’ on his fellow fighters, a notion he’s vehemently denied.
“USADA asked me to do a lot of things throughout this case, but one thing I didn’t do is snitch on anybody in MMA,” Jones told ESPN.
“I definitely didn’t give up any information on anyone in the sport, nor do I know of anybody who’s doing these things in the sport.
“I think the whole snitching thing is pretty silly. It’s interesting to watch people jump to conclusions about things they don’t know what they are talking about.”
Jones isn’t bothered if fans think he’s a snitch as he’s used to being spoken about in negative terms due to his past transgressions.

I definitely didn’t give up any information on anyone in the sport, nor do I know of anybody who’s doing these things in the sport
“I understand who I am in this sport,” he said. “I understand that I’m always going to be somewhat of a controversial athlete in our sport.
“I understand that I’m going to be a guy that’s very fun to talk about whether it’s for the good or bad. I’m just grateful to be relevant at the end of the day.
“When you are one of the better athletes in the sport, people are going to talk about you.”
USADA took well over a year to come to the conclusion that Jones didn’t knowingly take the Turanibol found in his system and issue him his punishment.

And although it took longer than he had hoped for, ‘Bones’ is happy with how everything played out.
“Proving your innocence can take a lot of time. Me and my team, we didn’t really care how long this would take,” he said.
“We just wanted to get all of our facts out and prove our innocence, no matter how long it took. So, if 15 months is how long it took, I feel happy with it.
“I think they were very fair. Once they were able to establish that this wasn’t my intention, they let me go. So I think they treated me fairly.”

Jones, 30, will be eligible to return to action on October 28 and has been offered an end-of-year rematch with Alexander Gustafsson.
“As of right now, that’s something that is on the table and we are in talks, but it looks like I will be,” Jones said of a rematch with the Swede.
“Nothing is signed on my end yet.”
Many in the MMA world want to see Jones take part in a trilogy fight with Cormier, who he viciously knocked out at UFC 214 to reclaim the lightweight before being stripped of it after his positive drug test was confirmed.

Jones isn’t interested in fighting ‘DC’ at this moment in time, saying: “I already have all the marbles when it comes to Daniel Cormier. I’ve beaten him twice.
“This game has never been personal. What is personal to me is chasing greatness, not individuals.
“So in the case of myself and Daniel Cormier, he needs to fight myself one more time if he ever wants to be considered one of the all-time greats.
“I don’t need to fight him again to be considered one of the all-time greats. I have many more years to prove it.”

The 55-year-old action star has begun filming Top Gun: Maverick, which is set for release next summer.
Cruise took to his official Twitter account to share a picture of himself as Lt. Peter Mitchell once again.
The photograph shows the actor all geared up and facing a fighter jet, while sporting those classic aviators.
The picture is captioned: “Feel The Need.”
Cruise added, “#Day1”, implying that filming has now begun on Top Gun 2.
The film was confirmed last summer and will arrive over 30 years after the original’s release. Top Gun: Maverick sees Cruise reprise his role, but he’s now a flight instructor.
He’s joined this time by director Joseph Kosinski, who helmed Tron Legacy and Cruise’s Oblivion.
The filmmaker told Coming Soon the movie will explore Maverick’s time in the modern military.
He said: “The Navy is very different now than it was in 1986. Back then, they hadn’t been in any war for 15 or 20 years at that point.”
The director added: “Now, here in 2017, the Navy’s been at war for 20 years.
“It’s just a different world now, so you can’t remake the first movie. It has to adapt.
“I certainly want to recreate the experience of that movie, which gives you a front-seat into the world of naval aviation and what it’s like to be in a fighter jet.”
Meanwhile on screenwriting duties are The Jungle Book’s Justin Marks and The Hunger Games’ Peter Craig.
On the sequel, Cruise said: “Stylistically it’s going to be same. Aviators are back. The need for speed.
“We’re going to have big, fast machines. It’s going to be a competition film, like the first one… but a progression for Maverick.”
Top Gun 2: Maverick hits UK cinemas on July 12, 2019.

Big Mo Slater (played by Laila Morse) is definitely hiding something on EastEnders, as she knows the truth about Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace), but it isn’t entirely clear why she’s telling everyone her granddaughter has died.
Mo has been keeping secrets, and when Kat returns tonight in the middle of her own wake there will be a lot of questions that need answering.
It could be none other than Big Mo’s former flame, Fat Elvis (Shenton Dixon), who rushes in to pick up the pieces when Kat’s return sparks major fallout on the BBC soap and her lies are exposed.
Fat Elvis hasn’t been seen for sometime and was mentioned by Mo for years without making an appearance, but he delighted fans when he turned up in Walford back in 2015.
He asked for Mo’s hand in marriage, however, he soon left the Slater matriarch for his probation officer.
Mo always mentioned Fat Elvis in relation to dodgy deals when he’d supply her with counterfeit goods for her market stall, and it looks like that hasn’t changed.
On Tuesday’s episode Mo rang up her old pal to let him know the was back in the area.
She even asked him to shift Kat’s coffin, as she asked: “What you gonna give me for a coffin? Brand new, previous owner.”
Fans of the soap were thrilled when Big Mo mentioned the wheeler dealer, and believed it could herald a return for the mysterious man.
One wrote on Twitter: “#eastenders Big mo is back so fat elvis isn’t too far behind then …”
“Fat Elvis returns #Eastenders,” another stated.
One viewer even came up with a theory as to how his return could coincide with Kat’s fake death.
“Maybe Big Mo is gonna leg it with the money & take Fat Elvis with her as we know Kat is alive but where is Alfie as he us supposed to be dead too #EastEnders,” they speculated.
The character’s comeback has not been confirmed, but with Mo back in the Square, there’s definitely an opportunity for Fat Elvis to make an almighty comeback, and he could help her get out of whatever trouble she’s landed herself in.
Will Mo take off with Fat Elvis when tensions rise in the Slater household?
EastEnders continues tonight at 7.30pm and 9pm on BBC One.

Capcom announced that the venerable Mega Man franchise will finally be coming back with Mega Man 11 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch in late 2018.
A short gameplay trailer showed that this would be the first core, numbered Mega Man game to feature 3D characters and environments rather than hand-drawn 2D sprites. Character designer Yuji Ishihara said in a 30th anniversary announcement stream that the company initially considered a more pixelated style for the new game, but that it “felt a little bit off from what gamers were probably looking for.” He added that he wanted to “create the illusion of 3D space without a 3D environment” so that players would feel the same familiarity with the classic Mega Man gameplay.

Suffice to say that fans have been eagerly awaiting Jason Roberts’ gorgeous indie game Gorogoa for awhile. It’s racked up years of awards, from Best Visual Design at Indiecade 2012 where the title debuted, to being the top pick at Good Game Club 2013 to nabbing financial assistance from Indie Fund in 2014. After years of delays and refinements, Gorogoa is finally getting released on PC and iOS on December 14th.
For the uninitiated, Gorogoa has players rearrange grids of lavishly hand-drawn panels to solve puzzles. The fantastic art is such a focal point that the game’s creator Roberts pushed back the game’s release to re-draw earlier parts after his skill had improved, a perfectionism that partially caused delays. You can pick up the well-polished Gorogoa on Steam or GOG for $ 15 or iOS for $ 5.
