Heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and stroke are more likely when you sit down for hours per day.

In a world where your passport dictates where you can live, travel, and work, there's a semi-frozen haven open to citizens of all countries — no complicated visa or employment permits required.
Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago 500 miles from the North Pole, is home to the world's northernmost human settlement. The 2,300 residents of the capital, Longyearbyen, include people of over 40 different nationalities, few of whom are "from" Svalbard, per say.
That's because you're not allowed to give birth on Svalbard — one of the many strange rules that govern existence on the remote collection of islands covered by ice.
There are surprises of course, whom the town endearingly calls "Svalbard babies" even when they're grown, Cecilia Blomdahl, a popular content creator based in Longyearbyen, said in an interview with Insider.
Among Svalbard's other odd rules left over from its days as a coal mining town include a monthly alcohol limit (24 beers, half a bottle of fortified wine, and one bottle of liquor), and a ban on cats to protect the bird population.
But the most important rule of all: Don't run out of money. And certainly don't find yourself without a home.
Courtesy of Cecilia Blomdahl
While the Svalbard treaty of 1920 permits anyone to live and work on the archipelago indefinitely, its open borders come with an asterisk: You must have enough money to support yourself and a roof over your head, or risk expulsion from the territory.
"You can stay here for as long as you can take care of yourself," Blomdahl said. "That means how you get to work, how you live, your housing — nothing will be provided for you."
Despite being a sovereignty of Norway, Svalbard employees pay an 8% income tax and local businesses contribute zero taxes toward the country's national insurance program (the mainland's current tax rate is 14% and 22% respectively). As a result, there are no retirement homes, public transport, homeless shelters, unemployment benefits, or really any social safety net you can think of.
Nobody understands this trade off quite like Mark Sabbatini, the founder and editor of IcePeople, "the world's northernmost alternative newspaper," who was kicked off Svalbard in 2021 after living in Longyearbyen for over a decade.
He moved to the island from the US in 2008 with around $ 1 million dollars in the bank and ambitions to launch an English-language newspaper, Sabbatini told Insider.

While running IcePeople, two of Sabbatini's apartments were condemned due to environmental issues he said were exacerbated by the area's rapidly warming climate. The first was built on top of thawing permafrost, and the second was located in a newly determined avalanche zone.
"At that point, I didn't have a whole lot of money and it was a big scramble every month to scrounge up stuff," he said. "I was begging, borrowing — not stealing, but pretty close."
After squatting in a friend's cabin during the pandemic, Sabbatini succumbed to his last resort: sleeping at the campground where a guide was killed in a polar bear attack the year before. That's when the governor gave him the boot.
"I was horribly miserable, but it was absolutely the right decision," Sabbatini, who now works at a local paper in Alaska, recalled.
"It's a very fair system. Your taxes are incredibly low, but the trade off is you get no social support," he continued. "If you're not paying for that system, why should you benefit from it?"

Thanks to the local housing crisis, it's easier to find work on Svalbard than a place to live. Despite 2.5 months of complete darkness and below-freezing temperatures, the capital of Longyearbyen is a great place to be an entrepreneur, according to Martin Fiala, one of the co-founders of Café Huskies.
"If you have some idea, you're probably the only one who's doing it [in Svalbard]" he said. "I think if we set this up in a regular city where there's five other coffee places or shops on the same block, I don't think we'd be as successful."
But the area's remoteness also creates a separate set of challenges, Fiala explained, especially when it comes to shipping in goods from the mainland.
"If the coffee machine breaks, no one here can fix it and it would take weeks for us to get another one," he said, adding that "there's one guy in town who knows how to fix an industrial dishwasher."
"As soon as we save up some more money, we want to buy or rent another one and have it as a spare," he told Insider. "If there's ever a moon colony set up, I think we'd be perfect for it. It's really like a space station here."

Fiala and his co-founders all have second jobs, which made the launch of Café Huskies less of a financial risk. He studied architecture but currently works as a nature guide — one of many professionals in the local tourist economy with hidden passions.
"Here, in tourism, you have a lot of people working in reception, guiding, driving a truck," he told Insider. "But they're also an economist, a chemist, a photographer."
Why do people of so many different backgrounds and careers continue flocking to one of the world's most remote towns? One answer, according to Fiala, is that the extremity of life in Svalbard serves as a "catalyst" for both the best and worst qualities of humans.
"If you're depressed and you have a drinking problem and you come here, you'll probably just end up just drinking through the winter," he explained. "But if you're trying to finish the book, you're just going to do it. Life here gets dialed up."

Alaska hasn't voted for a Democratic presidential nominee since Lyndon B. Johnson's landslide victory in 1964.
The state last backed a Democrat in a Senate race in 2008, when then-Anchorage Mark Begich won a close contest against veteran Republican lawmaker Ted Stevens.
And for nearly 50 years, Alaska voters sent longtime Republican Don Young to Washington, DC, as its at-large congressman.
But in the race to succeed Young — who passed away in February — former Democratic state Rep. Mary Peltola won a House special election last month in a field that included former Republican Gov. Sarah Palin and Republican Nick Begich III. (Begich is the nephew of the former Democratic senator.)
Despite the long history of GOP triumphs in the Frontier State, Peltola — who will be the first Alaska Native elected to Congress — said she was not surprised by her victory.
In an interview with Politico, she spoke of the tight-knit nature of Alaskan politicians and her embrace of bipartisanship while serving in the legislature — where she also developed a working relationship with Palin, the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee.
"I was very optimistic," she told the outlet. "The three of us who were in the final round of the special election, we had come out of a field of 48 candidates. And I worked very, very hard."
She continued: "I was on the phone two or three hours a day reaching out to Alaskans across the state. We had a number of events that we hosted to connect with as many voters as I possibly could."
Peltola remarked that her experience in the Alaska House of Representatives was a key part of her background.
"I did have a lot of connections that I had made over the 10 years in the Statehouse," she told Politico. "I developed a reputation over the years that I served in Juneau of being very easy to work with, able to work with anyone in the building — regardless of party."
"Alaska is a small state. Most of the people who are in leadership positions have been here many decades and Alaskans tend to have a long memory. So I was not shocked at the outcome of our race," she added.
The election was held with ranked-choice voting, where voters can indicate on their ballots their ranked preferences. If no candidate has received the majority of the vote in a race, the candidates are eliminated until votes for the top-two finishers are tallied up and a winner is declared.
After the votes were tabulated, Peltola defeated Palin 51.5%-48.5%.
The congresswoman-elect — who will sworn in on Tuesday — will serve out the remaining weeks of Young's term, and will once again face Palin and Begich in November for a full two-year term in office.

If anyone’s more stoked than fans about The Walking Dead’s “Caryl” spinoff, it’s Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride, the actors who have brought them to life for a decade. “In playing Carol, and as a viewer of the show, I’ve… long been intrigued with Daryl and Carol,” McBride said in a statement, “and by what so early on between them, even then, felt somehow bound.
“Their shared history is long, and each’s own personal fight to survive, even longer — the more obvious aspect of what has kept them close and loyal,” she continued. “But there is also a rather mysterious aspect to their fondness for one another that I enjoy, and their playfulness when the world permits.”
Reedus’ sentiments echo those of his leading lady, the flagship series’ only other remaining original cast member. After noting that The Walking Dead had “changed my life and career,” he said that “Daryl’s relationship with Carol has always been my favorite relationship on the show — sorry, Rick. I love the way these characters interact and relate to each other on so many levels and can’t wait to see where their ride goes from here.”
Added McBride: Walking Dead showrunner — and the spinoff’s co-creator — Angela Kang “has a way of shaking things up in great and unexpected ways. She’s like a kid playing with the dimmer switch! I’m very excited” to see what she comes up with.
What about you? Are you psyched about the spinoff? Any other characters you’d like to see it include (besides Dog, of course)? Hit the comments.

P-Valley‘s Season 1 finale is titled “Murda Night,” and, well, that’s some honest advertising.
Because not only does Lil Murda slay his performance during The Pynk’s final night of business, but the evening ends with an actual murder in the Paradise Room, of all places.
The episode picks up where the previous one left off: With Hailey alone with her abusive ex-man, who menacingly wonders what she’s done with the money she stole from him. She claims to have put it in a bank, but he doesn’t believe her. She points out that there are cameras everywhere in the club, so he makes her start dancing so no one gets suspicious. They talk about how she wasn’t his wife, but she did take a whole lot of money from him because he was toxic and only devoted to his gang.
While that’s happening, Mercedes’ neighbor sends her a message (aka the Missing poster of Hailey), and she recognizes the ring on the hand resting on Hailey’s shoulder in the corner of the photo: It’s the same one worn by the customer who asked for Hailey earlier. When Uncle Clifford, Diamond and Big L all are MIA, Mercedes takes matters into her own, pole-calloused hands. She grabs a bottle of Champagne and enters the Paradise Room, telling Montavious that bottle service and an extra dancer are all part of the package. After a little while, he hands Mercedes a stack and tells her to leave. “If Hailey wants me to leave, I leave,” she says pointedly.
Meanwhile, out in the club, Lil Murda gets over his stagefright and nails his performance, with Keyshawn and a bunch of other dancers doing their thing in the background. Afterward, the music producer guy who’s there to see Murda seems a lot more interested in representing Miss Missisippi. And when he casually drops some homophobic slurs and makes a point of saying how he needs an “authentic” artist on his roster, Lil Murda is cold to and dismissive of Uncle Clifford, who is hurt by her man’s abrupt change in demeanor.
Later, in the office, Lil Murda knows he messed up. “You got exactly what you wanted, huh?” Uncle Clifford asks, unmoved by Lil Murda’s tears and excuse that he was “just flexin’.” Then she throws the younger man out of the office, saying: “You Lil’ Murda now, not Lamarcus. What a privilege it was getting to know him. What a joy. Because Lamarcus was ready. This Lil Murda character, that’s the face you show me first. I don’t know about him.”
Back in the Paradise Room, things devolve quickly. Mercedes smashes the bottle and uses it to try to stab Montavious, but he quickly overpowers her. Then Hailey runs to get his money, which she says is in the club. At the same time, after Derrick is his usual terrible and abusive self to Keyshawn, Diamond follows him into the men’s room and starts a fight. Their tussle eventually spills into the club, and when Diamond’s gun goes off, the crowd flees.
While all of that ruckus is happening, Hailey has returned with Montavious’ money. We learn that her daughter — named Autumn — wasn’t his, but he was in the girl’s life. And she drowned in the flood “while I was trying to run away from you,” Hailey says.
Eventually, Uncle Clifford becomes aware of what’s going down in the Paradise Room, so she grabs a gun and runs in there. Diamond eventually follows, but he comes up short when three bullets whiz through the closed door… and then a puddle of blood starts to seep out beneath it.
The next thing we know, Uncle Clifford and her grandma are dressed all in black and getting ready to go to a funeral. But the “funeral” is actually the public auction for The Pynk, which is attended by the dancers, Andre, his wife and the mayor. Andre thinks he’ll be able to just sweep up the club and its land, but then Hailey enters and WAY outbids him. She eventually wins the bidding war, and the mayor fumes as the dancers celebrate and Hailey pays for the property with Montavious’ cash.
Mercedes isn’t feeling as great. She goes to her mother’s church to beg forgiveness from God and Patrice, but the latter reminds her that she’s “dead” to her daughter, and turns her back on her. So Mercedes goes to the club, where Uncle Clifford, her grandma and Hailey are having a drink. “Is it took care of?” she asks Clifford, which seems to indicate that she killed Montavious but won’t face charges. “It’s took care of,” Clifford assures her. “Good,” Hailey interjects, “because it’s opening time at The Pynk.”

Shannen Doherty is remembering former Our House co-star Wilford Brimley, who died on Saturday at the age of 85.
From 1986 to 1988, Brimley played family patriarch Gus Witherspoon on the aforementioned NBC family drama, on which Doherty played his teenage granddaughter, Kris. On Instagram Sunday, Doherty mourned her TV granddad, choosing to remember him as a man who “gave big hugs and told great jokes.”
“I met Wilford when we did Our House together. He taught me a lot on that show,” she wrote. “He also gave me a horse named Brownie. Taught me how to ski in Utah. Had two African Grey’s that would curse and call his dogs only to laugh at them when they came running. He gave big hugs and told great jokes. He was in fact like a grandpa to me for a very long time. He was talented and will be missed.”
Doherty wasn’t the only Our House alumna who paid homage to Brimley. TV mom Deidre Hall also posted that “heaven just got a lot more interesting.” (See her full tribute here.)
Brimley passed away in his Utah home on Saturday morning. He had recently spent days in an ICU hospital unit on dialysis.
His breakthrough role came in 1974, when he was cast in the recurring part of Horace Brimley on The Waltons. He would go on to appear in more than a dozen made-for-TV movies before he found a starring role in Our House, which ran for two seasons. Among his most memorable TV work, though, was a series of ads for Quaker Oats breakfast cereal throughout the 1980s, as well as a string of commercials for the diabetes testing supplies service Liberty Medical.
On the big screen, Brimley appeared in such films as The China Syndrome, The Thing, The Natural and Cocoon. All told, he had more than 70 acting credits to his name.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly, and his three children.

Walker probed: “So, to the thousands of parents watching this morning who have been encouraged to send their children back to school in various parts of England, because of the low impact on children, what is your message to them this morning?”
Hancock went on: “The reason I said that about Leicester is because there is an unusually high incidence of children, and we have always said if your child is in reception, or year one or year six you should still send them to school, even in Leicester.”
Later in the conversation, Walker interrupted and said: “Jonathan Ashworth said in the Commons that you knew about the spike three days ago and that there should have been a faster response to flare-ups.
“Why did it take so long to put these measures into place?”

With a detective circling in and a dead body left in their wake, Ruby and Billy’s second-chance love story is about to come crashing down. Life on the Run just isn’t meant to last.
Many questions still remained heading into Sunday’s finale: Would Ruby give up her family for another shot with her former flame, or would the rekindled lovers head straight to jail? Would Ruby ever find out about Billy’s true intentions? (And can we please get a spinoff greenlit for Babe and Laurel!?) Let’s break it all down with a recap.
After fleeing from the bar, Ruby and Billy chase after a truck in the middle of a snowfall. They hop in the back and hitch a ride, and after a quick cut, they’re back to getting frisky on the train. When a server comes to their roomette to deliver a late breakfast, Ruby and Billy realize the woman thought the two “love birds” were in their room the entire night. So if someone asks if they might’ve, you know, jumped off a moving train to murder a woman, the lady could be a key witness in their defense.
Officer Babe Cloud wakes up at Laurel’s house to find her new fling working in the basement. Laurel makes a joke about not telling anyone about their tryst if Cloud lets her buddy Daniel off the hook. (Read the room, Laurel!) The mood immediately sours, as we hear scampering footsteps above them. Turns out Daniel was hiding out at Laurel’s the entire time! Cloud acquires a phone that Daniel throws behind him when escaping, but then arrests Laurel for harboring a fugitive. Looks like this new love is officially on the rocks.
Billy tells Ruby that ever since he found out about her family, he knew she wouldn’t choose him. “I want you to miss me, every day for the rest of your f–king life. I want you to think of me, want me and love me even though you’re with him,” he says. (Geez, obsess much?)
After he tells her she’s the love of his life, Ruby tells Billy she’s going to end it with Laurence. She then admits she never finished his book or watched his talk because she was jealous. “I know,” he says before she punches him.
Ruby forces Billy to let her see his talk on his laptop. While she’s watching, an email notification comes up, which brings Ruby to an email from Fiona. Subject: Don’t Let Ruby See This. Of course she hits play on the video, and it’s Billy’s pitch to book publishers, detailing the trip he was about to take just before he texted “Run” to Ruby. She tells him it was impressive. “I had no idea you were capable of something like that,” she says. “Or maybe I did.”
The cops find out from the truck driver that a man and woman jumped off his truck at the train station. Since Laurel told Cloud they were heading to L.A., the chase is on… only Billy and Ruby still think they got away scot-free.
Laurel and Cloud discover that the phone Daniel left behind is Fiona’s. Cloud calls the most recent number and is connected to Laurence, who then leaves Ruby a message telling her to call the police. We then see Cloud on the phone telling someone, “If you do exactly as I’ve told you, we can work this out… You’re doing the right thing.”
Ruby pulls the train’s emergency brake, and Cloud is right there to hop aboard. The train starts again and the conductor announces they’re only 20 minutes from L.A. Cloud hunts for Billy, while he opens his laptop and realizes what Ruby actually saw.
When the train arrives at Union Station, Billy makes a run for it, cash bag in hand. Outside, he finds Ruby looking dejected, but Laurence and her boys are also on the scene. Billy tells her he loves her and that he’s ready to face the legality awaiting him, but he wants her to choose him and admit that she knows he loves her. “Admit it,” he repeats. With her family looking on, Ruby doesn’t utter a single word back to him. She turns around and walks away.
Did Ruby make the right choice? Did you want to see more of Laurel and Babe? Grade the finale and season below, then hit the comments with your thoughts!
