After five years of litigation, Oberlin College will pay a local Ohio bakery the $ 36.59 million it's owed from a 2019 ruling in a defamation suit against the school.
The liberal arts college said Thursday that it will make good on the nearly $ 37 million it owes Gibson's Bakery. The announcement comes after the Ohio Supreme Court in August declined to review Oberlin's request to appeal a lower court's decision that the school defamed the bakery.
The lawsuit centers on a 2016 shoplifting incident at the bakery, during which the store owner's son got in a physical altercation with three Black students. The event caused a period of protest in the community as students and Oberlin College officials alike called out the bakery for racism, Insider reported.
The three students eventually admitted their guilt, and the Gibson family sued the college for defamation in 2017. Two years later, a judge ruled in favor of the Gibsons, and Oberlin was said to owe the business $ 44 million.
In a response to the August decision on the appeal, Lorna Gibson — an owner of the bakery — penned an op-ed published in Common Sense demanding the payout.
Gibson detailed how the aftermath of the ordeal has negatively impacted the business she inherited from her late husband and father-in-law and accused Oberlin of refusing to pay up.
"While the Ohio Supreme Court's recent decision has made us hopeful, if the money doesn't come through within the next couple months, I'll be forced to declare bankruptcy and shut the doors of Gibson's for good," Gibson wrote.
Oberlin directed its attention toward the future in a statement on Thursday.
"We value our relationship with the city of Oberlin," its statement said, according to The New York Times. "And we look forward to continuing our support of and partnership with local businesses as we work together to help our city thrive."

Last year, Google began rolling out a feature that let users message businesses through their Google profiles. Now, it’s integrating that feature into Google Maps. Any messages you’ve sent to businesses through their Google profiles will now be accessible in Maps for iOS and Android. Just tap the menu button, and then “Messages,” and you’ll be able to see those conversations without having to leave the app. Google is also bringing the messaging feature to more countries this week.

This is the latest in a series of recent updates to Google Maps. Google has also introduced a follow button, EV charging station info, a commute tab and the ability to plan group events.

This story is part of a series between OZY and Well Being Trust called Mental States of the Nation, where we explore ways that different states across the U.S. are enforcing and facilitating mental health parity.
We think of libraries as a place to improve our minds through education and information. Now, some libraries are taking that a step further and offering mental health services, as well.
Starting 2012, the Joel D. Valdez Main library, a 96,000 square-foot-facility in downtown Tucson, Arizona, has been running a public health program through the Pima County library system. Referred to as the Library Nurse Program, this was first developed to help the growing number of patrons who came to the library not only looking for resources, but also for safety and protection from the elements.
Pima County’s nurse-in-the-library program has acted as a role model for many other libraries across the country, including the San Francisco Public Library and the Queens Library in New York City. Both libraries now have programs and resources in-place to help those who are struggling with mental health issues and/or are homeless.
“Libraries have become the hub for communities, for resources, classes and trainings. So why not have libraries be the front line of educating people and sometimes intervening with people that have mental health or substance use needs?” says Benjamin F. Miller, chief strategy officer at Well Being Trust. “I think it’s an amazingly innovative idea that we’re now needing to go to places where people actually show up.”
The library is a safe space, a place where people can come and they don’t feel threatened.
Estela Garcia, manager for the Library Nurse Program
Reference librarians — or those who are responsible for providing information in response to questions posed by library users — are trained to offer neutral help. And while this type of help is great for finding a book, it’s not so useful if someone’s having a health crisis. The library nurses, on the other hand, are able to take the time to offer more in-depth conversations and medical resources, building a relationship with people in need. “It’s been really helpful for people in public with a variety of needs to have access to both kinds of relationships at the library,” says Pima County library services and branch manager, Kate DeMeester.
Although the libraries don’t track mental health stats discretely, records show that the nurses in the Pima Country library system made over 1,700 referrals in 2017. These referrals included services ranging from free or low-income clinics to mental health providers to vaccination recommendations. “We have found it to be very successful; we’ve seen a marked reduction in incidents where we need to call the police,” DeMeester says. “It’s been satisfying for us to know people are more likely to get the help they need rather than just getting kicked out.”
Part of the high need for mental health services at this library comes from the large homeless population in the community, which has been steadily declining since the program was announced in 2012 — the homeless population is now less than 1,400, compared to over 7,000 in 2012. The library nurses not only facilitate mental health resources, but also help find shelter, food and even keep a stash of clothing on hand. “The library is a safe space, a place where people can come and they don’t feel threatened,” says Estela Garcia, manager for the Library Nurse Program in Tucson. Having a nurse there is important, she says, to focus “on the human piece of homelessness.”
The city of San Francisco also had a major homeless problem, with close to 1,000 homeless individuals visiting the SF Public Library every day. But since hiring the very first full-time, library-based psychiatric social worker back in 2009, news reports have shown that about 150 homeless people in the city have received permanent housing, and another 800 have enrolled in social and mental health services.
According to Dora Barilla, group vice president for community health investment at Providence St. Joseph’s Health, these types of programs are the perfect examples of building strong community and attacking the mental health problem head on, rather than just covering it up. “Schools, hospitals and libraries are all anchor resources. We should look at them as a source of referral and wisdom in our communities, and have them be part of a health network.”

NEW YORK (AP) — The hostility she’s felt from the public recently wasn’t necessarily the last straw in television news photographer Lori Bentley-Law’s decision to quit the business after 24 years, but it was one of them.
Bentley-Law’s recent blog post explaining why she was leaving Los Angeles’ KNBC-TV hit home for many colleagues. While President Donald Trump’s attacks on the media are usually centered on national outlets like CNN and The New York Times, the attitudes unleashed have filtered down to journalists on the street covering news in local communities across the country.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

While professional tour guides and Lonely Planets can help you get to grips with a place, on a return trip to China, featured contributor Leon McCarron finds that, sometimes, all you need to do is enlist the help of a local.
I wasn’t quite sure why we’d been invited to the party. But there we were, in a ballroom in the Chinese city of Guangzhou with members of the American Chamber of Commerce; a mixture of Chinese and international investors, bonding at small tables to the sound of smooth jazz.
We felt and were out of place. My friend Rob and I were near the end of a six-month, 3,000-mile long walk from the Gobi Desert to the South China Sea and, although we’d scrubbed up, our matted hair and tangled beards betrayed us.
We’d been invited by chance after someone heard about our journey. The whole affair would probably have faded from memory, were it not for a young local man called Dennis Hu. He worked in marketing for a company that made folding bikes, and we talked at length about adventures we’d been on, or wanted to go on. And a friendship was born.
Dennis and I land in the capital, Changsha, and drive north toward the mountainous region of Zhangjiajie. We are headed first for a mountain called Tianmen, accessible via the world’s longest cable car. The carriages leave from the middle of the city, and for the first few minutes, you glide over the top of homes and shops and football pitches and building sites. Then, suddenly, dramatic and vertiginous mountains come into view, swallowing all sign of habitation. The angle of the cable cars changes and we are pulled up, slowly and surely, into the sky.
The views, Dennis reminds me, are spectacular. I trusted him on this—we had ascended a vertical kilometer. The weather, however, had changed as we’d been climbing, leaving us trying to snatch glimpses between the clouds.

He tells me about the huge hole in the side of the mountain (‘Heaven’s Gate’) and the views of the switch-backed road up the hillside (called the ’99 Bends,’ for perhaps obvious reasons)—due to the mist, I have to imagine them both. What we do see, however—and very clearly—are the remarkable wooden walkways and glass bridges that have been built around the edges of the precipitous cliffs. On the latter, you can look straight down on a clear day to the next patch of earth, hundreds of meters below. Suddenly, the lack of visibility doesn’t bother me quite so much.
Often, it’s the little insights into Hunan, and indeed into China, that make me appreciate Dennis’s company the most. In a teahouse, he explains to me that each time the glass is refilled, one should tap three fingers on the table by way of thanks. During the Qing dynasty, an Emperor had decided to pour tea for his servants, which was unheard of; forced to sit, they couldn’t perform the customary bow in his presence, and so they tapped the table as an equivalent. Ever since, this has become the polite convention.
Later, over dinner in Changsha, Dennis shows me one of the characters for Chinese liquor: 酒. The three strokes on the left of the character indicate that with the first drink, one feels wise, like a scholar. With the second, it’s more like work, and one drinks like a soldier. With the final drink, one becomes helpless, like a beggar. Even within this single character, there is a story to be told.
We finish in Xiangtan, Dennis’s hometown. He’d always spoken of it as a small and cozy place. In Chinese terms, I discover, this means it is a city of only three million. We drive to where he grew up and try to find his primary school, but that entire side of the city has been redeveloped. “Every time I come back, the whole city feels different,” says Dennis. “I still love it, but it’s always changing and growing.”
Spending time with Dennis had been very different to my previous experience; that one had been a wild adventure, but there was so much I’d missed. Dennis and I had the time to ask questions, and potter round, and had no pressing deadline to meet. But more than that, I got to see a little of a foreign place through local eyes; to Dennis this was home, and he wanted to share the things he loved about it. Best of all, he had the curiosity of a traveler, even in a familiar place, and took nothing for granted.
That surely is one of the greatest traits of any good adventurer. It’s a great privilege to slow right down almost to the point of stopping; to listen to those who know a place intimately, and perhaps to have a cup of tea and think about what it all means.
A month ago Sony added more than 200 local broadcasters to its PlayStation Vue streaming service, and today the number grew by more than 85. That puts the total number of local stations available at 540 or so, although for any individual viewers it’s probably just going to matter for the several stations in their area.
The list of new additions is available on Sony’s website and consists mostly of ABC, CBS and Fox affiliates around the country, with a couple of new NBC stations for good measure. Now that the starting price is at $ 45, at least more customers can know they’ll be able to watch and DVR fall shows from the major networks without having to add an antenna to their setup.

After skipping his flight back to the US in the wake of accusations of sexual assault against a minor, Defense Distributed founder Cody Wilson attempted to rent an apartment in Taipei this week, according to United Daily News (Chinese, Google Translate), a Chinese-language media outlet based in Taiwan.
That article indicates that Wilson appears to have initially passed himself off as an American student living in the city. But after Wilson seemed to have secured an apartment by making an initial down payment, the rental agency reportedly recognized him and called the authorities. UDN writes that area police and Taiwan’s Criminal Investigation Bureau are now trying to again locate Wilson.
On Wednesday, police in Austin, Texas, first announced that they had a warrant out for the arrest of the 3D-printed gun pioneer on that allegation of sexual assault of an underage girl. At a press conference later that afternoon, the Austin Police Department revealed that Wilson’s last known location was Taiwan and that the department was not sure whether Wilson had gone to Taiwan on legitimate business or whether he was expressly trying to flee the United States.
