Panasonic’s full-frame mirrorless S1R is loaded with potential https://briefnews.eu/panasonics-full-frame-mirrorless-s1r-is-loaded-with-potential/ https://briefnews.eu/panasonics-full-frame-mirrorless-s1r-is-loaded-with-potential/#respond Wed, 26 Sep 2018 21:10:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/panasonics-full-frame-mirrorless-s1r-is-loaded-with-potential/

Yesterday, Panasonic made a big splash by announcing the L-Mount alliance with Leica and Sigma, and unveiling its first full-frame mirrorless cameras, the Lumix S1 and S1R. The 24- and 47-megapixel cameras, respectively, are still prototypes and the specs aren’t final, but they look promising. Both have built-in image stabilization, a large, high-resolution EVF, triaxial tilt LCD for both selfie photographers and vloggers, the highest flash sync speeds on the market, and double slots for SD and XQD cards.

We were able to get our hands on the S1R, and although the camera was non-operational, the design and layout are nearly final. As such, I was able to check out the handling of the camera and compare it to Panasonic’s flagship GH5. So far, in terms of dials and buttons, I prefer it to what Canon and Nikon have done. Where Canon tried some bold layout changes on the EOS R, Panasonic has stuck to a more traditional and more tactile layout.

The L-mount is 50mm, smaller than both Canon and Nikon’s RF and Z-Mounts. Panasonic said that won’t affect quality, however, and pointed out that L-Mount designer Leica invented the 35mm camera. It emphasized that both cameras will be great for video, though it believes that the 24-megapixel S1 will be more desirable for 4K shooting. With a 47-megapixel sensor, the S1R will handle video well, but will be more targeted to landscape, portrait and other photographers that need the extra resolution.

Video shooters get both a microphone and headphone jack, matching full-frame models from Sony, Nikon and Canon. The rear LCD is a “triaxial tilt” model, but a representative told us that it will be hinged and flip out as well — a must for vloggers or selfie-takers. The viewfinder will be a very high resolution model, and Panasonic promised it will be one of the best on the market.

The autofocus system is a contrast- and not phase-detect system, unfortunately. Panasonic said it will use “depth from defocus,” which sounds similar to what Leica offers on its SL and TL mirrorless cameras. Panasonic supports both XQD and SDXC, but each card has a dedicated slot, so if you want to have a backup during shooting, you’ll need both types of cards.

Though the S1R feels smaller than Panasonic’s GH5, it’s actually a touch bigger, and the control layout is slightly shifted. The joystick and dial controls for shutter and aperture are in roughly the same spots. However, mode dial and AF lock control are shifted to the left and there are fewer function buttons. The record button is now on the back, rather than the top. Finally, there’s a top LCD that displays useful information, much like on Canon and Nikon’s new models. These changes aren’t too crazy, but will take a little getting used to.

Panasonic hasn’t finalized the specs, so there are a few key things we don’t know yet. For instance, it hasn’t yet said whether video can be recorded externally or internally at 10-bit 4:2:2, like the GH5 and GH5s. Given Panasonic’s history, I’d bet on that, however.

We also don’t know, of course, the image and video quality, nor the autofocus performance and other key specs. As for the price, that’s still up in the air, but the S1 and S1R strongly resemble the Sony A7 III and A7R III, which cost $ 2,000 and $ 3,200, respectively. Canon’s Z6 and Z7 cost $ 2,000 and $ 3,600, while the 30.1-megapixel Canon EOS R is $ 2,299. All those factors, obviously, are crucial to how the camera will be accepted by the market, so we’ll reserve final judgement until we learn more and get a hold of the final product for a full review.

  • Hurricane Florence has people turning to local hardware and supply stores like Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Ace for assistance that the government can’t necessarily provide.
  • These outlets have emergency command centers and meteorologists on duty.
  • After 2017’s brutal hurricane season, Home Depot had revenue of more than $ 100 billion, and Lowe’s earned about $ 68 billion.

MIAMI (AP) — Before and after a hurricane, Ace is the place. And Home Depot and Lowe’s. And many other hardware and building supply outlets.

Not surprisingly, these companies plan for storms such as Hurricane Florence all year. Much like the Federal Emergency Management Agency, supplies are pre-positioned and trucks loaded and ready to go with everything from batteries to gas cans to tarps to chainsaws.

Russian S-300 and S-400 air defense missile systems are put in combat mode to practice hitting targets in the largest military drill the nation has held since the 1980s.

A video released by the Russian Defense Ministry shows cranes placing surface-to-air missiles on launch vehicles, while soldiers monitor radar in command centers. The launchers are later set into firing position, ready to shoot down incoming aircraft and enemy missiles. The Pantsir-S missile-gun systems can also be seen securing the area.

“We have repelled an enemy aerial attack. The unit has executed its task with excellence,” the battery commander, Lieutenant Colonel Maksim Voronoy, said.

The air defense units were deployed to Russia’s Far East to participate in Vostok 2018 – a massive week-long exercise involving about 300,000 troops and tens of thousands of combat vehicles.

Parkland teacher arrested for leaving loaded gun in public toilet https://briefnews.eu/parkland-teacher-arrested-for-leaving-loaded-gun-in-public-toilet/ https://briefnews.eu/parkland-teacher-arrested-for-leaving-loaded-gun-in-public-toilet/#respond Thu, 12 Apr 2018 22:12:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/parkland-teacher-arrested-for-leaving-loaded-gun-in-public-toilet/

A teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the site of the February shooting that claimed 17 lives, has been arrested for leaving his loaded pistol in a public toilet, where a homeless man later fired it.

Chemistry teacher Sean Simpson, 43, was using a bathroom stall at the Deerfield Beach pier on Sunday and took out his Glock 9mm pistol. He then left the restroom, leaving the gun behind when he went to wash his hands, a Broward County Sheriff’s Office report revealed on Thursday. He noticed his gun was missing five minutes later and, as he approached the public bathroom, he heard a single gunshot.

Upon entering the toilet, he encountered Joseph Spataro, 69, a homeless man, who he wrestled his pistol from. No one was hurt in the incident but police responded to several 911 calls and promptly arrested the two men. They found the loaded weapon in Simpson’s pocket along with several rounds of ammunition, as well as a projectile lodged in the wall and a shell casing in the corner of the room.

Simpson has a concealed carry permit and posted a $ 250 bond. He previously spoke out in favor of arming teachers in the wake of the February 14 mass shooting, in which 17 people were killed and 17 more were injured. Despite this, Simpson showed support for many of his students-turned activists that have turned the tragedy into a national campaign for stricter gun control.

Simpson supervised student activist Emma Gonzalez on a science project and was featured in a documentary film produced by David Hogg, another activist in the March For Our Lives movement. Simpson also attended the #MarchForOurLives event in Washington, DC.

“I know there are some of us that are willing to take the training if it was offered and probably be another line of defense,” Simpson reportedly told MSNBC on February 21, in the wake of the shooting. “But, again, that is a complicated subject, and I’m not sure if it’s the answer.”

“Would I have been able to stop this gentleman with a semiautomatic weapon? I’m not sure. Would I have liked to have had the opportunity? I’m not sure I would know the answer. Maybe,” he told MSNBC’s Katy Tur.

Florida lawmakers have signed a bill providing $ 65 million to train and arm school staff but Broward School Board members voted unanimously to oppose introducing such measures at their schools. It did, however, introduce mandatory clear backpacks for students at the beginning of April.

We tried loaded fries from major fast-food chains to see who does it best — and the winner is shocking https://briefnews.eu/we-tried-loaded-fries-from-major-fast-food-chains-to-see-who-does-it-best-and-the-winner-is-shocking/ https://briefnews.eu/we-tried-loaded-fries-from-major-fast-food-chains-to-see-who-does-it-best-and-the-winner-is-shocking/#respond Sat, 31 Mar 2018 21:49:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-tried-loaded-fries-from-major-fast-food-chains-to-see-who-does-it-best-and-the-winner-is-shocking/ Shake Shack Bacon Cheese FriesHollis Johnson/Business Insider

  • Many fast-food chains have some form of loaded fries on the menu.
  • We ranked loaded fries from the major chains that offer them.
  • Amazingly, Taco Bell was found to have the best loaded fries, despite only just launching french fries in January.

Loaded fries are the very definition of decadence.

Strips of fried potato topped with copious unhealthy, yet delicious, additions like cheese, bacon, chili, beef, or gravy — the breadth of options is limited only by the scope of the imagination.

But as with any fast-food item, there’s a fine line to walk between decadence and disgusting. Too much cheese, and they can become a soggy morass; too many toppings, and a gilded lily can become a gilded mess.

Most fast-food chains have offered some form of loaded fries over the years as a limited item, and a handful have them on the menu permanently. Of the six fries we tried from four chains — Arby’s, Shake Shack, Taco Bell, and Wendy’s — only one was a limited item.

Six cheese-slathered, bacon-filled orders of loaded fries later, we managed to rank them from worst to best — and the results were pretty surprising.

6. Wendy’s Baconator Fries

Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

With the Baconator fries, a fork is 85% necessary. The topping coverage is lackluster, and lots of bare fries are unearthed just below the surface. Wendy’s fries are typically on the floppy side anyway, so the heat and moisture of cheese and condensation building in their little fries greenhouse play only a partial factor in their sogginess.

Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

On the plus side, they do manage to retain heat for a fair amount of time. But they do not live up to the storied Baconator name, for all its grease and glory. There’s nothing to temper the extreme richness of cheese and bacon — at least a Baconator has ketchup.

5. Shake Shack Cheese Fries

Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

Shake Shack’s cheese fries are decadent at best and wanton at worst. The cheese tastes like a fancy version of that nacho cheese that comes out of a pump — that’s a good thing in this instance. It’s velvety smooth, rich, and kind of buttery.

Android ALERT – Own one of THESE phones? Your device could be loaded with malware https://briefnews.eu/android-alert-own-one-of-these-phones-your-device-could-be-loaded-with-malware/ https://briefnews.eu/android-alert-own-one-of-these-phones-your-device-could-be-loaded-with-malware/#respond Sun, 18 Mar 2018 12:05:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/android-alert-own-one-of-these-phones-your-device-could-be-loaded-with-malware/

Android fans have been warned after an “aggressive” form of malware was found to have infected almost five million devices.

The malicious software has been dubbed RottenSys and it disguises itself as a tool to help manage Wi-Fi connections.

But instead of doing that, the malware asks for sensitive Android permissions like silent download permission and accessibility service permission.

Security experts Check Point said the malware could have entered devices during the supplier chain process.

They said devices that could be affected were made by Samsung, Huawei, Honor, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo and GIONEE.

Check Point added that all infected devices were distributed by an outsourced mobile phone supply chain distributor called Tian Pai that’s based in China.

In a blog post, the security experts said: “According to our findings, the RottenSys malware began propagating in September 2016. By March 12, 2018, 4,964,460 devices were infected by RottenSys.”

They added: “RottenSys is an extremely aggressive ad network. In the past 10 days alone, it popped aggressive ads 13,250,756 times (called impressions in the ad industry), and 548,822 of which were translated into ad clicks.”

Check Point discovered the RottenSys on a Xiaomi Redmi phone, with the device in question asking for “many” sensitive permissions not related to Wi-Fi.

The security experts said the malware uses a number of tactics to stay hidden, and that the software severely hit performance and battery life.

Speaking about how devices were infected with RottenSys, Check Point said: “In the list of observed malware distribution channels, we saw two names which suggest a possible connection to a Hangzhou based mobile phone supply chain distributor Tian Pai.

“Tian Pai related channels contribute 49.2% of the total number of infested devices that we observed.

“According to China National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System, Tian Pai offers a wide range of services from presales customization, online/offline wholesale to customer care. It covers regional sales of top brands in the market such as Samsung, HTC, Apple, Xiaomi, ZTE, Coolpad, Lenovo, and Huawei.

“Tian Pai may not be a direct participant in the campaign. Yet, this correlates with our hypothesis that the malware entered the user’s device before purchase.”

To check if your Android device is infected with the RottenSys malware, head to the Android system settings.

Then, Check Point advised, go to the App Manager and check for the following malware packages and uninstall them:

• android.yellowcalendarz

• changmi.launcher

• android.services.securewifi

• system.service.zdsgt

In other Android news, Express.co.uk recently revealed that the Android Oreo successor – Android P – will have a great security feature.

It’s rumoured that the official unveiling of Android P, the next major version of Android, could be coming soon.

And ahead of the launch, details have emerged about what features will be in the latest version of Google’s mobile OS.

Due to the software’s open source nature, we already have an idea of some of the tweaks Google is working on for Android right now.

And one big new feature that’s in the pipelines will provide a major security boost for users.

According to XDA Developers, Android P will stop background apps from accessing your phone’s microphone or camera without you noticing.

This will ensure that malicious apps that run in the background can’t take compromising pictures that can then be used to blackmail a victim.

The new Android P feature was spotted in an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) commit.

Last month, we reported on hackers’ accelerating efforts to get full control of the Nintendo Switch, allowing the popular system to run homebrew code and, potentially, pirated games. This week, the hacking team fail0verflow claimed a major advance in that effort, tweeting a picture showing Linux booting up on the machine.

While fail0verflow’s photo wouldn’t be that difficult to fake, the group has released several significant hacks for systems ranging from the Wii to the PS4 in the past, lending credence to their Switch hacking claims. Fail0verflow previously tweeted video of a homebrew “scroller” animation running on the Switch, and the group claimed its code exploit worked in a way that “can’t be patched (in currently released Switches).”

Despite the public tease, it might be a while before fail0verflow releases details and code for its Switch exploit to the public. While fail0verflow demonstrated a Linux port for the PS4 in 2016, the team didn’t reveal the PS4 exploit it used to run that code until over a year later, by which point the exploit had been patched out of more modern PS4 firmware. And the presence of some external hardware, wires, and ribbon cables in fail0verflow’s photo suggest the Switch exploit might not even be possible on unmodified hardware just yet.

  • Separating finances in a divorce can be messy.
  • In 9 US states, everything acquired throughout the marriage from real estate to income is considered joint property.
  • Residents in these states are entitled to a 50/50 split of all assets during a divorce.

Divorce is an ending no couple wants to arrive at, but the reality is many do and the tall task of dividing your assets varies from state to state.

If your partner is the breadwinner, you’ll be better off post-divorce in states that observe community property law, where a 50/50 split applies to your marital estate.

Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin (and Alaska by opt-in agreement) are community property states.

Here, everything acquired throughout the marriage is considered joint property (except assets given as a gift or inherited, or separate property owned before marriage, so long as it stayed separate throughout the marriage), so when a couple separates, each spouse is entitled to exactly half of the assets. That includes real estate, income, cars, furniture, stocks, and retirement accounts.

So if your partner has been earning six figures for the entirety of your 10-year marriage and you have earned significantly less — perhaps your industry isn’t high-paying or you chose to forgo a career to care for young children — you’ll more than likely be better off post-divorce if you live in a community property state, where your spouse’s wealth is considered joint property in a marriage.

In contrast, in the other US 41 states, a marital estate is made up of assets acquired under each spouse’s name; they’re not technically considered joint or community property unless both names are on the deed. Upon divorce, the assets are divided “fairly” at a judge’s discretion, taking into account each person’s earning potential or income, financial needs, contributions, and personal assets, rather than simply splitting it 50/50.

To protect personal assets in either case, couples can set up a prenuptial agreement, which establishes terms for a division of assets in the event of a divorce.

Check the map below to find out if the state you live in observes equitable distribution or community property law.

AL GORE: The Trump administration is ‘tongue tied’ on climate change because it’s loaded with ‘rogue’ deniers https://briefnews.eu/al-gore-the-trump-administration-is-tongue-tied-on-climate-change-because-its-loaded-with-rogue-deniers/ https://briefnews.eu/al-gore-the-trump-administration-is-tongue-tied-on-climate-change-because-its-loaded-with-rogue-deniers/#respond Wed, 02 Aug 2017 08:35:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/al-gore-the-trump-administration-is-tongue-tied-on-climate-change-because-its-loaded-with-rogue-deniers/ al gore cnnCNN Screenshot

Former Vice President Al Gore said on Tuesday that the Trump administration is “tongue tied” on the climate change, “because the truth about the climate crisis is still inconvenient” for fossil-fuel polluters, who “unfortunately have a lot of influence” over Trump’s administration.

Gore told Anderson Cooper in the interview that Trump has “surrounded himself with a rogue’s gallery of climate deniers.”

Speaking to Trump’s move in June to pull the US out of the Paris climate accord, Gore said, at one point, he believed Trump might not follow through with it — partially due to his previous meetings with Trump.

“I actually did feel there was a real chance that he might come to his senses and stay in the Paris agreement,” Gore told Cooper. He added, “the conversation continued when he went into the White House, and I had reason to believe he might really decide to stay in.”

Gore said some people in Trump’s inner circle “definitely” wanted Trump to maintain the US’ position in the Paris agreement. It is believed Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner favored that move.

Trump met with multiple climate-change activists in December, including Al Gore and Leonardo DiCaprio. Terry Tamminen, head of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, echoed similar statements to Business Insider in March. Tamminen said that at their meeting with Trump – where he and the DiCaprio presented information about how environmental decisions would benefit the economy – “everything we showed him that was a climate solution he liked.”

Tamminen said Trump “seemed very enthusiastic to learn more about these things” and sought to have their economic proposals potentially integrated in his infrastructure plan.

Trump pulled the US out of the Paris climate accord on June 1.

Gore told Cooper on Tuesday that it “concerned” him that Trump withdrew the US from the agreement because he was worried other countries might use it as an excuse to pull out themselves. He said he was encouraged when other countries that signed onto the agreement doubled down on their commitments in response to Trump’s withdrawal.

Gore also tipped his hat to the US governors, mayors, and businesses that participated in the We Are Still In movement to continue to meet Paris agreement goals.

“It looks like we have a real chance in the US of meeting the terms of the Paris agreement, regardless of what Trump does,” Gore said.
