The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ decisive 31-9 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night drew one of the smaller crowds in recent Super Bowl memory. As (finally) reported by Nielsen following a most atypical delay, CBS’ multiplatform coverage of Super Bowl LV amassed 96.4 million total viewers, down five percent from last year’s cume and marking the smallest audience for the Big Game since at least 2007 (when the Colts beat the Bears 29-17, on CBS). That said, Super Bowl LV stands as the most live-streamed NFL game ever; its “average minute audience” of 5.7 million viewers was up 65 percent vs. the 2020 championship. Last year’s Super Bowl LIV, in which the Chiefs topped the 49ers 31-20, amassed 102 million viewers across Fox, Fox Deportes and all digital properties, with viewership on Fox alone totaling 99.9 million. CBS’ previous hosting of the championship game in 2019 totaled 100.7 million — which at the time marked a 10-year low (and an 11-year low for its broadcast-only audience of 98.2 mil). Following Super Bowl LV, the series debut of the Queen Latifah-led The Equalizer drew 20.4 million viewers — the smallest audience for a Super Bowl lead-out since Fox’s 24: Legacy in 2017 (17.6 mil), but the best numbers for any entertainment program since the February 2020 Academy Awards. TVLine readers gave the reboot an average grade of “B+,” with more than 80 percent saying that plan to keep tuning in. Looking at the four previous times CBS hosted the Big Game, The World’s Best (series premiere) drew 22.2 million in 2019 (and went on to last just a season); The Late Show With Stephen Colbert delivered 20.6 mil in 2016; an episode of Elementary copped 20.8 mil in 2013; and Undercover Boss‘ series launch scored a whopping 38.7 mil in 2010. The network’s most super success story, though, was when Survivor‘s Season 2/Australian Outback opener netted 45.4 million viewers back in 2001.

You can now feast your eyes on a festering chunk of solidified sewage as it ages, not-so-gracefully, inside a specially-designed isolation case that is being livestreamed from a museum in London.
Is there anything more 21st century than that?
The rancid refuse was chipped off an infamous sewer clog discovered in London late last year called the Whitechapel “Fatberg”—the preferred term for such muck monsters. The complete clog clocked in as an epic 250-meter-long, 130-metric ton mass of congealed excrement and waste, thought to be one of the largest—if not the largest—fatbergs ever identified. Authorities found it blocking a Victorian-era sewer line in the eastern Whitechapel area of the city. They spent nine long weeks in a subterranean war, hacking and blasting away the hardened blob of feces, fats, wet wipes, and various other detritus.

A St. Louis Uber and Lyft driver has been kicked off both companies’ platforms after the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Friday night that he had been livestreaming his passengers for months without their consent.
According to the newspaper, Jason Gargac, a 32-year-old man from Florissant, Missouri, had been giving hundreds of rides since March—and he has streamed nearly all of them live, under the Twitch handle “JustSmurf.” (His Twitch account has also been shuttered.)
As the Dispatch wrote:

If you’re anything like me and the thought that you’ve accidentally Instagram Live-d your makeup routine induces sudden nausea, than making a living by live-streaming is probably not one of your career goals. But for the subjects of Hao Wu‘s documentary People’s Republic of Desire, live-streaming isn’t just how they make their living, it’s how they make up their sense of self. Though I am unable to get past my inhibitions, I will gladly watch other people sit on their couch and answer the questions that roll in on the screen. It’s become increasingly easier to check out of your life for a moment and check in to someone else’s. But the line between voyeurism and escapism is a thin one that is barely toed by the subjects in Wu’s documentary.
People’s Republic narrows its focus to two young hosts on a live-streaming social network called YY. There is no comparable equivalent in North America (Sean Parker’s Airtime never really broke through), but in China it is frequented by over 300 million users and hosts can make upwards of $ 20,000 a month if they tap into the right demographic. From the glimpses we get of it in the documentary, karaoke and comedic bits are the main forms of entertainment on the site.
A lot of the comedy and basic allure of the social network gets lost in translation. For instance, former nurse and now full-time YY host Shen Man has a pleasant voice, but doesn’t appear to have the kind of charisma or vocal ability to suggest a star in the making. And Big Li, with his boisterous rants and playful bits, comes across a man-child whose appeal lies in his ordinariness. In fact, many of his devoted fans are self-described diaosi, a label that denotes working class “losers.” These diaosi worship Shen Man and Big Li and tip them with what little money they have in the hopes of getting a shout-out live on air. Unlike a gambling habit that partially hinges on the hope that you will make a fortune, these super-fans are essentially donating money they don’t have in order to feel apart of an experience they’ve given up hope of achieving. It’s a shame then, that Wu doesn’t devote more time to these loyal blue-collar fans.

But what he does focus on is worthy of attention and, well, alarm. The filmmaker does not present technology as an equalizing tool that permits poor, hard-working people to achieve fortune and fame, or even modest income. Rather, he takes the Black Mirror approach. There are numerous snippets in which fans and hosts confess to feeling “disconnected” and “lonely,” which feels too on the nose at times. But that’s mostly due to the fact that they feel like soundbites, rather than deeper explorations of their experiences online. Later, disturbing anecdotes about hosts live-streaming their suicide attempts and subsequent recovery end up feeling tacked on for shock value. But the film is certainly ambitious in its scope as it tries to piece together the sometimes odious world of live-streaming.
The main thrust of Wu’s film is the marketplace at the centre of YY. Unlike Twitter and Instagram celebrities, the follower/host relationship is markedly transactional. For many, that exchange is the main attraction. Many diaosi describe their marvel at watching big donors give away hundreds of thousands, if not millions in one go. And those big donors love feeling in control of the hosts they give to. The documentary doesn’t get too specific, but the donors seem to suggest that they can make certain demands of the hosts they give to, some of them sexual. Indeed, YY bears a lot of resemblance to camming, but the sex happens off-screen.
The film’s last third is centered around an annual tournament for the hosts. Whomever can accumulate the most money and votes wins. Wu is keen to point out (as he does many times) that hosts can lose money of their own. But they continue to buy their own votes, some of them participating in the tournament year after year, out of desperation. If you want to win, you have to put your skin in the game – sometimes literally.
Pointing out the blurred lines between offline and online has become as cliche as pointing out the blurred lines between fiction and documentary. What is real and what is performed can seem irrelevant when both get equal attention. But when Wu begins the film in a training camp for live-streaming hosts, why does he leave so suddenly? Why can’t we share in what these wannabe hosts learn about presenting themselves to the webcam?

REVIEW:
For the last five years, the Logitech C920 has been the best affordable webcam for streamers and content creators. The problem is that if you wanted to upgrade, you would have a hard time finding a significantly better option without spending hundreds of dollars. You could get Elgato’s $ 130 Camlink and hook up a DSLR for a professional looking image even in low light. Or you could look into the world of dedicated hand-cameras that use the same kind of image processing as an iPhone. But those alternatives require a lot of cash.
The Razer Kiyo, however, is a big improvement, and it is out now for $ 100. It still isn’t a match for some of those more expensive solutions, but it is packed with features and great image quality for a webcam.
The built-in light
The first thing most people will notice is that the Kiyo has its own, built-in ring of LED lights. If you’re already using your own dedicated lighting for a Twitch stream or for making YouTube videos, this is not going to make a dent in that. The Kiyo’s lights aren’t all that powerful, but they are excellent for smoothing out your face with even lighting.
You can adjust the brightness of the light at any time with the dial around the edges of the camera. This can go from completely off to a level of illumination that is right on the cusp of making me want to squint and turn away. And at that highest setting, in my experience, the camera eliminates dark shadows around your eyes.
So while this won’t replace an existing LED panel you have set up in your studio, it does play an important role in improving the look of your footage.
Great image quality
The Kiyo’s biggest advantage over the C920 isn’t the light. It’s the image quality. The Razer camera captures colors with a lot more accuracy than the Logitech webcam. I occasionally use a greenscreen, and when I look at raw footage from the Kiyo, I’m amazed at how much more the green pops. That means when I bring in Xsplit’s Chroma Key feature, the Kiyo handles it a lot better than the Logitech.
I fiddled with the settings on both cameras, and it was a lot easier to get a great-looking image from the Kiyo. With the C920, I was continually making compromises. For example, I can increas the “color intensity” to increase the accuracy of the colors, but that ended up making my face look blotchy. That was not an issue with the Kiyo.
Sixty frames per second
And then there’s the refresh rate. The Logitech C920 and the Razer Kiyo do 1080p at 30 frames per second. But if you drop down to 720p, the Logitech still only refreshes 30 times per second while the Kiyo can actually do 60 frames.
Now, if you’re using the cameras alongside game footage while livestreaming, you don’t need any resolution higher than 720p. But I think it looks great to have a camera feed come in at 60 FPS alongside a game doing the same. Now, to take advantage of a 60Hz camera, you’ll need to keep the exposure setting turned down, but the built-in light helps with that.
The light isn’t a magic bullet
Don’t buy the Kiyo instead of getting your own LED ring light. As I mentioned, it’s not going to magically make your recordings look professional.
You can get great results with it if you mess around with the settings and make some sacrifices. But is best for removing shadows on your face in conjunction with other lights in your room.
Overall, I still think C920 from Logitech is a great webcam for livestreaming and YouTube. You can get it for $ 60 — and it is often on sale for around $ 45. That’s a great deal for something that is definitely good enough. The Kiyo, however, is better, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade.
Kiyo’s especially nice if you are using a green screen or run a livestream in 60 frames per second. Personally, I have a C920 and an Elgato Cam Link, and I’m going to keep using the Kiyo. It looks crisp, and I don’t need to go buy a $ 400 mirrorless Panasonic to get the best results.
Razer Kiyo is available now for $ 100. Razer provided GamesBeat with a sample unit for the purpose of this review.
Pop-up stores are all the rage, but Pornhub’s shop in New York City is offering something… unique. If you visit its just-opened location on 70 Wooster Street, you’ll see a bed with a camera that livestreams directly to the porn giant’s website. No, you can’t get away with what normally happens on a bed at Pornhub, but you are encouraged to “interact” with the camera. And let’s be honest: this is probably your best shot at appearing live on a porn site without having to explain a surprise career move.
The store itself (which, unsurprisingly, is adults-only) is also notable as Pornhub’s retail debut. And it’s mostly about fashion. You’ll see some sex toys and “aphrodisiac herbs,” but most of the wares are either self-branded clothing or apparel from Pornhub’s partners. The company knowingly set up shop next to high fashion brands, in fact. While no one would confuse the porn purveyor with its haute couture neighbors, the company clearly wants to be taken seriously.
If you’re curious enough to step inside, the New York pop-up will be open until December 20th. There will also be a “holiday-themed” store in Milan, Italy before long.
As for why Pornhub is making the move? The company’s Corey Price told New York Daily News that it has been expanding its clothing line and decided that real-world interaction at a pop-up store “would be cool” instead of limiting it to the virtual realm. We wouldn’t count on any permanent Pornhub stores, then, but this shows how internet giants of all stripes increasingly see retail as a key way to drive business.

]]>Children as young as two months of age are being sexually abused online, in what a global charity says is a growing ‘dark’ trend of live-streamed child exploitation. Much of the demand comes from UK-based pedophiles.
‘Cybersex trafficking’ is a new form of exploitation, whereby children are being forced to perform sexual acts for the sexual gratification of online customers. The trend has become rampant in the Philippines, where police are receiving thousands of referrals each month, and almost 100 children have already been rescued in the past year.
According to the International Justice Mission (IJM), a global charity in charge of safeguarding poor communities while collaborating with local authorities, says most of the demand comes from Western pedophiles in places like the UK, Canada and the US.
David Westlake, chief executive of the organization’s UK branch, said: “Cybersex trafficking of children is a deeply disturbing global problem. Increased global access to technology and the internet means that this dark crime is growing at an alarming rate.
“Filipino police alone are receiving thousands of referrals every month.”
In a rescue mission last week, nine children aged between two and nine were rescued by Filipino authorities. It followed a referral by police in Canada after a Canadian man was found paying a woman in the south-east Asian country to exploit the children.
The woman was caught while offering to perform sexual acts on her eight-year-old daughter for the pedophile. She is also alleged to have offered to perform acts on a three-month-old child. The baby, however, was not found during the rescue operation.
The suspect, who is not believed to have been poor, is also alleged to have offered to abuse children of any age and do so until they cried in pain.
“International Justice Mission and Filipino police are urgently working with global police and intelligence sources from countries like the UK, US and Canada to help identify victims being abused and then rescue them,” Westlake said, according to The Independent.
“We urgently need more people to join us in the fight to stop traffickers from stealing the childhoods and innocence of Filipino children in this brutal way.”
Following the arrest of the suspect in the latest rescue, Philippines Police Superintendent Maria Sheila T Portento, from the Women and Children Protection Center (WCPC), said: “This operation is the clear message that WCPC wants to send to every facilitator/perpetrator of this crime. We mean business … that is, [we will] put you behind bars and make you accountable for every act of exploitation you commit and every dream of children you destroyed.”

Today, Vimeo announced that there is an agreement in place for its acquisition of the streaming company Livestream. It also launched Vimeo Live, which offers livestreaming solutions directly through the Vimeo platform. When the acquisition is complete, Livestream’s tools will be available in Vimeo Live.
Vimeo’s CEO Anjali Sud has made clear that livestreaming is an important feature for the company. “Livestreaming is the #1 request from our creator community this year, and we’re focused on bringing a new level of quality, convenience and craft to this evolving medium,” she said. Livestream is one of the top independent live streaming platforms; it’s behind over 10 million events per year, with partners such as Spotify, the Philadelphia Eagles and Tough Mudder.
The Vimeo Live platform will offer 1080p streaming; these can be replaced with 4K files after the fact for post-event viewing. Creators can take advantage of the robust hardware and software tools that Vimeo offers. According to TechCrunch, Vimeo Live will have a similar pricing structure to the company’s other paid plans. There will be monthly and annual offerings, as well as tiered prices.
After the cancellation of its planned Netflix-like streaming service, Vimeo was reportedly focusing instead on its creator community. This move into livestreaming (behind its competitors, such as YouTube), and the acquisition of Livestream, certainly supports that stated goal, and it makes a lot more sense for a company that offers video tools for creators.

An 18-year-old woman who allegedly caused a crash that killed her younger sister – a tragic incident which was also live-streamed on Instagram – has been arrested by police in California.
Obdulia Sanchez from Stockton, south of Sacramento, was booked into Mercer County Jail on charges of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter while under the influence, KFSN reported.
The suspect’s 14-year-old sister was killed in the crash while another girl of the same age from Fresno, south of San Jose, was badly injured.
Neither were wearing seatbelts, according to Mercer County Sheriff Vern Warnke.
Police say they are investigating a graphic video posted on Instagram that may have been taken by Sanchez prior to and during the fatal crash, according to KTXL.
The footage shows Sanchez singing along to music before the car swerves and overturns in a field.
“I killed my sister, but I don’t care,” she can be heard saying after the smash. “I killed my sister. I know I’m going to prison, but I don’t care. I’m sorry baby. I’ma hold it down…. rest in peace, sweetie.”
Sanchez’s sister, Jacqueline, was supposed to celebrate her birthday Sunday. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with funeral expenses.

Todd Hooper has shown up early at the virtual reality party. He started Vreal in Seattle to create a livestreaming platform for streamers to broadcast their gameplay in VR to spectators.
It’s like Twitch, the livestreaming platform for PC gamers, and it is one of the ways that virtual reality will become more social. I tried it out in a demo using an HTC Vive VR headset at Vreal’s headquarters, and I was greeted by a big panda. It was Bryan Chu, vice president of marketing at Vreal. He was talking with his hands, and his avatar’s hands were moving all over the place.
We were in a pretty lobby-like area with a bunch of icons all over. There were some games, movies, and other kinds of experiences to go into. I could teleport around the lobby and hold a conversation. Then we beamed into a VR game, Surgeon Simulator. We watched another player pulling out body parts from the body on the cartoon surgery table. We could resize ourselves into tiny characters on the table and see the game from any vantage. The player didn’t see us at all, but we could talk about the gameplay and set up virtual cameras to record the experience. But I had fun, knowing I was in VR, watching a game with a giant panda as my companion.
It was quite an immersive experience. Hooper has 20 people working on it, and he’s bringing in money via sponsorships as he waits for the VR audience to materialize. If it comes, Vreal will be ready with the right livestreaming technology. We talked about the VR streaming opportunity, and here’s an edited transcript of our conversation.
Above: Todd Hooper, CEO of Vreal in Seattle.
GamesBeat: It seems like you’re pretty far down the road.
Todd Hooper: Product-wise, as you saw in the demo, things have come a long way. One thing that’s probably new to you—we’re thinking hard about how to bridge the VR world, having the best streaming experience in VR, with the 2D world, where people will still be for a long time. How do we give them a view into VR?
Using the tools you just saw, we’ve worked with some streamers to launch a couple of new shows. HyperRPG launched a new Friday night show called ER VR. It’s filmed inside Surgeon Simulator. Zac Eubank, the head of the team there, pitched the show to us after he saw a demo last year. He said, “I want to do America’s Got Talent with virtual surgeons.” It came out great. It’s helped us understand what the audience wants to see. It gave us a good insight into how content creators are treated, too.
It’s interesting to see how people react. This is the format you just saw. This is a virtual camera in the space you were just in. They set up a bunch of these in the space, and then these are the judges. They run the show and we provide the tech platform. When we first looked into this, we thought we were just going to use this format. We weren’t going to show the backstage. But about a month ago, they accidentally flipped to the wrong video feed and the audience saw this, with all the cameras set up around there and the guy in the panda suit. The viewers had their minds blown. So now the audience wants to see more of that. The Twitch chat loves it.
The other show that came out, Rooster Teeth did Achievement Hunter last week with the same tech. I think it’s up to 300,000 views now. It was a different approach. They basically just took two of their creative people, put them in VReal, and didn’t tell them anything. They said, “Hey, take a shot of this.” It’s amazing. Just seeing what they do, the way they interact, it’s a lot of fun.
Above: Surgeon Simulator
GamesBeat: How has the Surgeon Simulator show grown?
Hooper: I think they had about 2,000 viewers for the premiere. It’s been pretty consistent. Hyper is not a massive Twitch channel. They’re more of a variety streamer. This has been very good for them. The main thing we track—the relative number of viewers is interesting, but the main thing is engagement. What’s the chat engagement? Are people just watching it, or are they diving in? So far, this whole panda thing has been interesting, how the audience has glommed on to that.
GamesBeat: With some of these, could viewers pick the camera they want to see?
Hooper: When people have their own VR rigs and the native component of the platform is launched, they can do that. For this presentation, the streamer is setting it up. They pick the cameras they want and switch in between them, using that to create the content. We think this is a good way to evangelize VR. It’s better than the traditional capture-the-headset view. You can watch a headset view for five or 10 seconds, maximum. More than that and it’s too much motion.
It’s like watching a football game right now. If you tried to watch football strictly through helmet cam, it would be pretty rough. You need to extra cameras to give you context and stability in the space. Then you can cut to the first-person view occasionally. You don’t want that to be the primary view.
We see Twitch and YouTube, the video platforms, as complementary to what we’re doing. There’s already an audience there. That audience is already used to looking at things on a flat screen, so we give them great content there. When that audience has VR headsets, we can show them the experience you just had and take it to the next level. I’m conscientious of the fact that most gamers don’t have VR yet. They’re interested in VR. They want to watch VR. But the price points have to come down. The content has to get better.
The audience is out there today watching video, whether it’s on Twitch or Facebook or YouTube. They’re interested in VR. But they’re probably still waiting for that perfect headset for the holidays. The Vive and Oculus are great products. PlayStation is a great product. But the price point is still up there.
