Exploding lithium-ion batteries can wreak havoc on airline flights or in waste facilities after people toss their old electronics into the trash. Now, scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have come up with a new chemical recipe that could combat the problem.

A lithium battery has two electrodes, separated by a thin plastic sheet and submerged in a liquid electrolyte—that’s a chemical medium (usually a flammable lithium-ion fluid) that allows charge to flow between a lithium-ion cathode to a carbon anode. When that thin plastic sheet breaks (due to too much jostling in the cargo hold of an airplane, for instance), the electrodes can come together, shorting out the battery. This produces heat, which can ignite the liquid electrolyte, and boom! You have a small fire in the cargo hold.

That’s why the FAA prohibits anything containing lithium-ion batteries in checked baggage. In 2017 alone, the agency reported 46 incidents of exploding batteries on airplanes.

Mazda working on lithium-ion batteries to replace lead-acid starter batteries https://briefnews.eu/mazda-working-on-lithium-ion-batteries-to-replace-lead-acid-starter-batteries/ https://briefnews.eu/mazda-working-on-lithium-ion-batteries-to-replace-lead-acid-starter-batteries/#respond Mon, 19 Mar 2018 20:03:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mazda-working-on-lithium-ion-batteries-to-replace-lead-acid-starter-batteries/

In the quest for ever better fuel economy, car companies are looking for every single advantage possible, no matter how small. This is evident in everything from active grille shutters to the 48-volt mild-hybrid electric assist systems like that in the new Ram 1500. For Mazda, the latest target for potential efficiency gains is the lowly 12-volt starter battery.

The company announced that it is partnering with two other companies, ELIIY Power and Ube Industries, to develop a lithium-ion starter battery that would be used on mainstream models in place of conventional lead-acid units. Mazda plans to have them ready for use by 2021. The advantage here would be that 12-volt lithium-ion batteries would be much smaller and lighter than the lead-acid ones they replace. And lighter cars don’t need as much fuel to move around. Plus, as an added benefit, making cars lighter also often makes them faster and better handling. This is why companies such as Lotus and Porsche have offered optional lithium-ion 12-volt batteries for some lightweight sports cars.

A potential downside to the use of these batteries is increased cost. Lead-acid batteries from your local parts store will run you between $ 100 to $ 150. AGM batteries could be between $ 200 and $ 300. As for lithium-ion batteries, Lotus introduced the option on the Evora 400 in 2016, and the option cost $ 1,690. Odds are that a company such as Mazda won’t be absorbing all those costs, meaning that the cost of these future Mazdas could increase with a change from lead-acid to lithium ion.

  • Department of Energy scientists said last week that they had discovered the fastest magnesium-ion solid-state conductor.
  • It could be a final blow to the lithium-ion batteries, which have been used for decades.
  • Batteries are seen as the last frontier for electric vehicles to become mainstream.

A team of researchers from the Department of Energy have discovered the fastest, they say, magnesium-ion solid-state conductor – a discovery that could potentially upend the battery market in the future and also one that is highlighting the intensifying rush to search for alternatives to lithium-ion batteries.

Most of these announcements usually cause little more than an indifferent shrug simply because it would take too long for the discoveries to attain any sort of commercial viability, especially in competition with lithium-ion batteries, which are also the object of research to make them more reliable, more efficient, and safer.

But the implications of this discovery are serious enough to merit a report. The key is the solid state of the conductor that the team created, which could be used as an electrolyte in a battery. Electrolytes are as a rule either metals in molten state or a liquid solution, through which ions travel. Conductors are solid-state metals, through which free electrons travel. One other important difference between conductors and electrolytes is that the electric current that flows through conductors is constant, which is not the case with electrolytes, where the strength of the current may change as the electrolyte changes over time.

The team tried to find a conductor that could become a less flammable alternative to electrolyte lithium-ion batteries and came up with a complex material with an even more complex name: magnesium scandium selenide spinel. The key ingredient in the mix was magnesium, which turned out to have mobility comparable to that of lithium ions in electrolyte batteries. In fact, one of the lead authors of the study, Pieremanuele Canepa, said the speed was “unprecedented”.

Still, it will be a long while until the discovery becomes a commercial product, so it would be a bit early to say it’s another nail in the coffin of lithium-ion batteries that so many people seem eager to build. It is even too early for another solid-state battery that uses glass as an electrolyte: the one developed by University of Porto assistant professor Marian Helena Braga and the creator of the first lithium-ion battery, John Goodenough.

In April, the glass battery project made headlines by promising a much higher energy density than normal lithium-ion batteries, a longer life cycle, non-flammability, faster charging times, and lower costs. Wonderful as all this sounds, it will take a lot of time to turn the prototype cell into an actual battery. A recent Bloomberg interview with Goodenough revealed that the team needs partners from the battery industry to make the jump from the lab to the factory. According to Goodenough, this could take between three and five years if all goes well.

Meanwhile, a hybrid carmaker from California, Fisker, has patented a solid-state car battery that, according to the company, has an energy density 2.5 times greater than that of lithium-ion cells. Higher energy density means faster charging times. This battery, too, is at least five years away from hitting markets, however.

Batteries are a big issue in the electric car boom. So big, in fact, that they could become the biggest hurdle to the mainstream adoption of EVs. They are simply too costly, which makes the EVs costly. Yet there is light on the horizon: According to Bloomberg New Energy Intelligence, the costs of EV batteries need to fall by more than 50 percent to make them competitive with internal combustion engine cars and this may happen by 2026. Competition from solid-state batteries would certainly help the cost-cutting drive.

  • Elon Musk’s Tesla Inc has switched on the world’s biggest lithium ion battery in South Australia.
  • Musk promised to build it in 100 days or give it free.
  • The battery is designed to shore up the regions grid network, which suffers from frequent blackouts.

HORNSDALE, Australia (Reuters) – Tesla Inc switched on the world’s biggest lithium ion battery on Friday in time to feed Australia’s shaky power grid for the first day of summer, meeting a promise by Elon Musk to build it in 100 days or give it free.

“South Australia is now leading the world in dispatchable renewable energy,” state Premier Jay Weatherill said at the official launch at the Hornsdale wind farm, owned by private French firm Neoen.

Tesla won a bid in July to build the 129-megawatt-hour battery for South Australia, which expanded in wind power far quicker than the rest of the country, but has suffered a string of blackouts over the past 18 months.

In a politically charged debate, opponents of the state’s renewables push have argued that the battery is a “Hollywood solution” in a country that still relies on fossil fuels, mainly coal, for two-thirds of its electricity.

Supporters, however, say it will help stabilize the grid in a state that now gets more than 40 percent of its electricity from wind energy, but needs help when the wind dies down.

“Storage can respond within a fraction of a second. It can address those stability issues very quickly without needing to resort to using large power plants,” said Praveen Kathpal, vice president of AES Energy, a losing bidder to build the battery.

Highlighting industry hopes for the take-up of battery storage, Tesla CEO Elon Musk visited the site some 225 kms (141 miles) north of the state capital Adelaide in July, hailing the battery as “just the beginning”.

The state has yet to reveal how much it is paying Tesla.

Weatherill came under fire last year after the entire state went black following a major storm, and raced to shore up the state’s grid with a $ 385 million plan, including ordering the big battery and installing diesel-fueled turbines.

AES’s Kathpal, who is also chairman of the U.S. Energy Storage Association, said South Australia’s commitment to turn to energy storage was an important step for the rest of the industry.

“We think that’s what’s really going to accelerate the uptake of energy storage in Australia,” he said.

Tesla has been selected by South Australia to install what the company is calling the “largest lithium-ion battery storage project in the world,” following a spate of power blackouts across the state.

The announcement comes several months after Tesla CEO Elon Musk offered to fix South Australia’s power crisis by installing $ 25 million worth of battery storage within 100 days — or give it away for free if the company missed its target. This offer was in response to a comment by Mike Cannon-Brookes, cofounder of Australian software maker Atlassian, who said he would arrange funding and political support if Tesla could fix the state’s mounting power problems.

It’s not clear whether Musk’s promise played a role in his winning the contract, but it likely held some sway when South Australia was leafing through the bids.

The entire state of South Australia was hit by a blackout for up to a day last September after serious storms. This was followed by further blackouts in February of this year due to extreme temperatures. And this is what spurred the South Australian government to seek a sustainable energy solution that can kick into action when needed.

Tesla will provide a 100 MW/129 MWh Powerpack that will be powered by a wind farm belonging to renewable energy provider Neoen in Hornsdale, South Australia. The gargantuan power pack will charge during off-peak hours for use during busier periods when demand on the grid is at its peak. It will hold enough power for more than 30,000 homes “…approximately equal to the amount of homes that lost power during the blackout period,” according to a statement issued by the company.

Though Tesla is perhaps better known for its electric cars, the company has been increasingly dabbling in renewable energy and battery storage systems. Back in 2015, Tesla announced the Powerwall, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that lets homeowners store power from solar panels. And last August Tesla acquired sister firm SolarCity — Musk was also chairman and a shareholder in the company — with a longer-term view of selling electric cars, solar panels, and residential / commercial battery storage systems under the single Tesla brand.

A few months later, Musk unveiled his vision for the future, which included houses replete with solar roofs.

That Tesla has now won such a major commercial contract in the renewable energy and battery storage realm represents a significant boost to its longer term aspirations.

This also leads us to two more questions: When will the system be complete and will Tesla have to provide it for free? Musk’s exact words back in March were:

Tesla will get the system installed and working 100 days from contract signature or it is free.

According to Tesla, the system will be complete by December this year — way more than 100 days from now — however it’s not clear exactly when the contract will be officially signed.

On Monday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited the site of a future lithium-ion battery factory in the eastern German town of Kamenz. The factory is being developed by Mercedes-Benz manufacturer Daimler, which will devote approximately €500 million (or $ 562 million) to churning out batteries for electric vehicles and stationary storage.

If the project seems similar to Tesla’s Nevada-based Gigafactory, you wouldn’t be alone in making that comparison. Tesla and Panasonic partnered to devote $ 5 billion to building a lithium-ion battery factory outside of Reno, Nevada, and the electric-car maker has said it hopes to produce 35 gigawatt-hours of auto and stationary batteries by 2018.

Daimler didn’t give any projections for its factory’s potential capacity, but it did say that its investment would quadruple the size of an existing battery factory on the site, which is run by Accumotive, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler. The German automaker is also pledging another €500 million to expand battery production worldwide. And if all goes well at the Kamenz site, Daimler says it will “go into operation in mid-2018.”

Lithium-ion battery-cell chemistry is currently dominant in electric cars, not to mention consumer electronics and other fields.

But what seems to be an army of researchers thinks it can be improved.

That includes one of the people who helped create lithium-ion batteries in the first place.

John Goodenough, a 94-year-old professor at the University of Texas Austin’s Cockrell School of Engineering—and the co-inventor of the lithium-ion cell—recently led a team that developed what is purported to be a better alternative.

As discussed in a paper published in the journal Energy & Environmental Science (via Scientific American), Goodenough and his colleagues claim their new battery can charge faster than current lithium-ion designs, and is noncombustible.

The latter quality is due to the battery’s solid-state design, which replaces the flammable liquid electrolyte used in current lithium-ion battery cells with a solid material.

In this case, the solid electrolyte material is glass, which researchers believe would lower the cost of any commercialized battery based on their design.

That’s because it would allow for the use of cheaper sodium, extracted from seawater, for the electrolyte rather than the lithium used in other solid-state batteries.

The researchers also claim better performance than current lithium-ion cells.

They say the glass-electrolyte solid-state battery can charge and discharge faster, and will have a longer lifespan than batteries with lithium-ion chemistry.

The experimental battery is also three times more energy dense, according to the researchers.

Energy density represents the amount of energy that can be stored in a given volume.

Greater energy density is desirable because it allows for increases in range without increasing the storage volume needed.

As with all research, it’s worth noting that a technology that looks promising in the lab, may not necessarily be commercially viable.

Even if it is, the transition from research project to consumer product can take years.

Some companies already market solid-state batteries, albeit of somewhat different designs to one proposed by Goodenough and his colleagues.

Solid state cells are used in the BlueCar electric cars deployed by French firm Bolloré in car-sharing services in the U.S. and Europe.

QuantumScape and Sakti3 have also sought to commercialize solid-state batteries.

Sakti3 was purchased by Dyson, the U.K. company famous for its bag-less vacuum cleaners, in 2015 for $ 90 million.

Lithium-ion creator helped develop a better battery technology https://briefnews.eu/lithium-ion-creator-helped-develop-a-better-battery-technology/ https://briefnews.eu/lithium-ion-creator-helped-develop-a-better-battery-technology/#respond Sun, 05 Mar 2017 14:25:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lithium-ion-creator-helped-develop-a-better-battery-technology/

At 94 years old, John B. Goodenough isn’t done changing the landscape of battery technology. The University of Texas at Austin professor who’s widely credited for the invention of lithium-ion batteries has developed a better alternative. Goodenough, Cockrell School senior research fellow Maria Helena Braga and their team have created a low-cost solid state battery that’s safer than lithium-ion. It stores thrice as much energy, which means more miles for electric vehicles in between charges. When you do need to charge, it can be done minutes instead of hours. Plus, it can withstand a greater number of charge and discharge cycles.

The team’s technology uses glass electrolytes instead of liquid like lithium-ion does. By using solid glass, the new battery won’t form dendrites — whisker-like pieces of lithium that usually form in liquid electrolytes. They’re the reason lithium-ion batteries have the tendency to short circuit and explode or start a fire.

The glass electrolytes also make it possible for the battery to operate in subzero degree (up to around -20 degrees Celsius or -4 degrees Fahrenheit) weather. And since their use means the creators replaced lithium with low-cost sodium, the batteries can be manufactured with earth-friendly materials. Someday, the new technology could make EVs more common and change the way we use our gadgets. For now, Goodenough and his team are looking to pair up with battery makers who can test their creation in electric vehicles and energy storage devices.
