An injury crisis coming into this international double-header has been exacerbated by suspensions to John Stones and Jordan Henderson, and Southgate said: “Maybe they were expecting us to be back by the end of June. “Of course it’s always easy to make a comment like that and not know the complex scenario decision-makers had to go through. “But everybody knew when the final was and the semi-final, and that they would be away for a period of time. It’s a bit like our clubs in the Champions League. Some of the rest of the leagues in Europe help them and adjust the fixture list. “And I’m sure our clubs would appreciate that because in the end they’re representing English football and we want them all to do well.” Stones has already returned to England and Henderson has stuck to his plans to spend a couple of extra days in Spain with his family. Joe Gomez will come into the centre-back position for tonight’s game against Spain, with Kieran Trippier replacing Kyle Walker at right-back and Harry Winks making his second appearance as a holding midfielder. That will give Southgate the opportunity to experiment with Ross Barkley in a No10 role playing off Harry Kane in a bid to help his captain get back on the scoresheet. There is a feeling that tiredness has played a big part in below-par displays throughout the squad since the World Cup. Certainly Spain, who exited the World Cup 13 days earlier than England, started their domestic league seven days after the Premier League. As a result, the home-based La Liga players got 47 days’ rest compared to 27 for England’s Premier League players. With 18 of the 23-man England squad who went to Russia now involved in European competition, that burden is starting to bite. “When you see the league, a lot of teams haven’t started yet at the level when they are at their maximum,” said Southgate. “And there are a lot of injuries across our league. I think it’s psychological rather than physical.” Raheem Sterling is one who could do with a psychological boost – not least his first international goal for three years. Southgate is backing him. “It’s going to be a confidence thing that when the goal comes he will go on a scoring run,” he said. “He’s been tough enough to deal with challenges in the past and I expect him to come through this.”

Artificial insemination isn’t new, but the technique is still breaking new ground — and it might just save one of the world’s better known species. South Africa’s University of Pretoria has successfully used artificial conception with lions for the first time, producing two cubs (Isabel and Victor, above) who’ve been healthy since their birth on August 25th. This wasn’t a simple case of repeating familiar methods, either. The researchers relied on a new approach that could represent a breakthrough for species conservation.
After collectiong sperm from a male lion, the team gauged the hormone levels of eligible females through blood samples to see when they would be well-suited to carrying the cubs. The only requirement was training the lionesses to rest next to a fence so that they could readily provide samples. Previous methods would have required moving the lions out of their existing habitat. Here, the females could stay in their existing environment.
Not everyone is happy with the development. Animal welfare groups have argued that South Africa’s captive lion breeding revolves around tourism and trade, not conservation. The researchers see things differently, though. In a chat with AFP, study scientist Imke Lueders saw artificial insemination as “another tool in our conservation box” that could keep the lion population going. Wild lion populations have plunged 43 percent in the past 20 years. Technology might be vital to keeping the species going. The technique could also help boost the populations for cheetahs and other big cats whose survival isn’t guaranteed.

Dozens of handwritten notes have appeared on the railings of the Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver, offering words of encouragement, quotes and pictures intended to help prevent suicides.
]]>“It’s a very long way to go. But their performance today was very effective,” said the former Denmark goalkeeper, who called the 2-0 victory over the Swedes “fully deserved.”
But Schmeichel was surprised at the lack of resistance offered by the normally stout Swedes, who had managed to neutralize a string of powerhouse teams, including France, the Netherlands and Italy on their way to the tournament with their rigid defensive tactics, and similarly put away Mexico and Switzerland once here.
“Sweden looked like a team that had enough of the World Cup. They looked tired, like they were happy with the quarter-finals and wanted to go home. England looked like the team that really wanted to get to the semi-final,” said the RT expert.
Schmeichel praised the sheer variety of England set piece play, which has turned into a “serious weapon” for them at Russia 2018 – three-fourths of their goals have come from the dead ball – and reserved special praise for the scorer of the opener in Samara.
“Harry Maguire is one of the players with the biggest potential at this World Cup,” said Schmeichel, noting that he had watched him play alongside his son Kasper at Leicester over the past season, but that he had elevated his play.

Schmeichel pointed out that he combines the qualities of a modern defender – an ability to take the ball up the pitch and excellent technique – with “an old-fashioned love of defending.”
But the man of the match for Schmeichel was fellow keeper Jordan Pickford, whose “outstanding” saves allowed England to play with composure afforded by a two-goal cushion as they sailed into the semi-finals against Russia or Croatia.

IT WAS billed as the final mock examination for Gareth Southgate’s England team and just as they looked to have pass with flying colours, they were robbed by the screen test.
VAR once again had a part to play in Wembley drama when the lens spotted that James Tarkowski put a rare foot wrong when he planted his boot on Federico Chiesa’s and eventually pointed to the spot. Lorenzo Insigne did the rest.
Until then, Jamie Vardy’s goal had looked to be a winner and England should reassure themselves at the very least there is no sense that the Three Lions should be out of their class in Russia.
A rare sight among fans at Wembley, it is a more common occurrence wherever groups of parents stand and shiver in the cold, cheering on their children on a Saturday morning.
But last night on occasions there was indeed the occasional smile of genuine, almost parental pride. Not least, it has to be said, with the manner of the opening goal.
Of course, Raheem Sterling was fouled, but having somehow kept his footing, he carried on rather than accepting the free-kick that would have been his due. Then he was fouled again and this time the whistle blew.
Instantly, though, Jesse Lingard put the ball down, knocked it into the path of Jamie Vardy and the Leicester man fairly burst the Wembley net in his delight and putting one over the head-scratching Italians.
It’s the sort of quick-witted out-manoeuvring we were all encouraged to try to produce when we were schoolkids, before rolling around for the cameras, a slurp of energy drink, vanish spray and a well-organised defensive wall became the norm. Somehow a very English goal – playing to the whistle, not making a fuss – and great to see.
And there was more. Ashley Young turning round in a circle to wriggle out of play on the touchline rather than finding row Z. England attacking late in the first half, four against three – an attack that sadly ended with a tame shot wide.
Sterling, Lingard and Kieran Trippier all arrived into the penalty area and actually looked up. Vardy offered pace in the channels that genuinely looked a threat.
But the schoolboy enthusiasm of Southgate’s young team was never going to completely mask the danger of schoolboy errors and, on occasions, little more that petulant brattishness.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain kicking the ball away after conceding a free-kick received the yellow card it will be given in Russia – a worrying lack of discipline ahead of a tournament where these thing will tot up.
Then just before the break, Young scythed through Davide Zappacosta on the touchline in a challenge that could easily be red-carded by an officious tournament referee. Two black marks – serious learning points both of them.
As for the defence, the half-time report had to be must try harder: to keep a grip on the movement of the inappropriately named Ciro Immobile as much as anything. The Italian striker had added some of the class that was perhaps the only ingredient missing from England’s opening-half display.
Young took full advantage of his reprieve by rolling back the years with a marauding run and shot that was well saved and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain stung the hands of Gianluigi Donnarumma, the 19-year-old looking to inherit the gloves of the legendary Gianluigi Buffon, with a 20-yard drive.
In between there was the odd lapse of footballing grammar and concentration – Jack Butland knocking a goal kick straight to blue shirt 35 yards from his goal.
The to-ing and fro-ing of substitutions caused the inevitable disruption – Young showing impressively adept at tying up the right flank of the England defence as he had been with the left.
Adam Lallana emerged in a final bid to book a seat on the plane – a season of injury leaving some doubt over one the first names on the check-in list had it been drawn up last summer.
In fairness he had little chance to do himself any favours and will face a series of re-tests every time he pulls on a Liverpool shirt under Southgate’s watchful gaze. Lewis Cook’s cameo looks like being precisely that.
In another nod to schoolboy football, Stones suffered the ignominy of that seemingly regular incident at junior level – a ball kicked straight in his face – signalling the arrival of Jordan Henderson with Dier ending the game in the back three.
Of course, in the end the penalty has to be considered A Minus. Overall, though? A solid B plus.
Gareth Southgate’s men put in an impressive showing on Friday night as they ran out 1-0 winners over Holland.
Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard scored the winner at Johan Cruijff Arena to stake his claim to be in England’s squad for the 2018 Russia World Cup.
England come up against Italy this evening, another side along with Holland who won’t be competing in Russia, to test their skils further.
Southgate has just two more international friendlies after this one so time is running out for players to impress.
Which player will stand up and be counted tonight to put his case forward for a seat on that plane?

England 1-0 Italy
46 mins: No changes at the break for England. Elsewhere, Scotland have beaten Hungary 1-0 in Alex Macleish’s first game in charge and Spain lead Argentina 2-0 in Madrid.
HT: Not a bad first 45 for the Three Lions. Sterling looking like England’s biggest threat with Vardy linking up well.
Should Southgate ring the changes at HT or stick with what he’s seen so far?
37 mins: England are looking very promising on the attack. This time Raheem Sterling gets his legs on before passing to Ashley Young.
The Manchester United defender fails to connect properly though and his shot drags wide of the post.
26 mins: GOAL! Minutes later Vardy absolutely rockets the ball into the net following a quick England attack.
He takes one touch on the edge of the box before rifling the ball past Donnarumma.
The referee had a quick VAR check to see if England took the free-kick too quickly but the goal stands.
23 mins: Big chance for Jamie Vardy inside the box but Donnarumma makes himself big to deny the Leicester forward.
12 mins: Antonio Candreva and Ashley Young are enjoying a fierce battle down the right.
Immobile has the best chance of the game as the ball comes in from the right but heads just over the bar. A let off for England.
5 mins: Our man Matt Dunn at Wembey:
Immaculate memorial to Jimmy Armfield, Cyrille Regis and Davide Astori – England fans at their very best. As for the opening exchanges, strangely muted at Wembley. People want to like Southgate’s England but are not quite sure.
3 mins: Barely any time on the clock and John Stones is having a nightmare.
First he tries to play Ciro Immobile offside before he gets caught on the ball inside the area by the forward again just a minute later.
He just about manages to recover but that’s not going to settle his nerves.
Debutant Tarkowski is supposed to be the nervous one!.
KICK OFF
7.58pm: The teams are out and the national anthems are being sung. Get your last minute bets in people! Kick off is moments away.
7.50pm: Some pre-match thoughts from Gareth Southgate.
“We wanted to keep some stability. We need to look at others players too though and tonight is a good test for us,” he said.
“James Tarkowski has done well with us, his club and he fits the way we play. We need to see other options at centre-back too for this summer.
“It is nice for Jack Butland as most of his caps have been away from Wembley. Dele Alli hasn’t been able to train fully this week but he is of course, a very important player for us.”
19:33pm: Not that you should get bored of watching England on the TV, but if you do find yourselves staring into space when it’s 0-0 at half time without a single shot then we do give you permission to check out any of the other games on offer tonight.

The Lions prevailed 3.4 (22) to 2.3 (15) in front of 1500 hardy fans at a drenched South Pine Sports Complex on Saturday.
Two soccered goals from Jess Wuetschner, who also finished with an equal game high 18 disposals, were the difference as both teams worked hard for little reward as the rain fell.

The Bulldogs flogged Carlton 86-13 on Friday to lead on 12 points, ahead of the Lions on percentage.
Fremantle dominated the opening quarter but only had one behind to show for it.
Wuetschner kicked the game’s first goal five minutes into the second quarter and scored the clincher early in the last quarter, when she got her toe on a loose ball that spilt behind the pack in the goal square.
In between, Tasmanian recruit Brittany Gibson provided the highlight of the day, dancing out of danger after a superb pick-up to slot a goal from 40m.
Goals to Fremantle’s Stacey Barr and Ashley Atkins in the closing stages of the third and fourth quarters kept the visitors in the hunt.
Brisbane’s Alexandra Anderson and Kate Lutkins had 18 touches on a day where effort was not always rewarded.
Jack Del Rio and Chuck Pagano were fired on Sunday. Jim Caldwell and John Fox joined them early Monday morning.
Ben McAdoo is long gone.
The fate of several other NFL coaches could be determined in the next few days, maybe even the next few hours. It’s shaping up to be another “Black Monday” for the league. There have been at least six coaching changes every year since 2011, a streak that is expected to continue in 2018.
Here’s a look at the teams that have already made coaching moves:
John Fox was 14-34 in three seasons with the Bears (5-11). In his last loss, Chicago didn’t cross midfield until the fourth quarter and totalled only 30 yards rushing.
Jim Caldwell gave the Lions (9-7) consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 1995, but it wasn’t enough to save his job. Caldwell was 36-28 in four years and has two playoff postseason appearances.
The Lions announced the decision on Monday.
Detroit Lions General Manager Bob Quinn has informed Jim Caldwell that he will not be returning as head coach.

Pagano was fired Sunday, two hours after the Colts beat Houston in the finale. Indianapolis missed the playoffs each of the last three years, the first time that’s happened since a seven-year drought from 1988 to 1994. The next coach surely will want to know more about the health and future of quarterback Andrew Luck.
Jack Del Rio was fired Sunday following a 30-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers that capped a 6-10 season. Del Rio signed a four-year contract extension last February after Oakland ended a 13-year playoff drought with a 12-win season. The Raiders followed that successful campaign with a disappointing one. ESPN reported that the Raiders want to bring back former coach Jon Gruden.
Ben McAdoo was the first coach fired this season, let go on Dec. 4 after a 2-10 start. His 28 games were the fewest for a Giants coach since 1930. New general manager Dave Gettleman, who replaced Jerry Reese, already has started cleaning house. Gettleman and the next coach will have to decide what to do with Eli Manning .
“This is where I want to play,” Manning said. “This is like my family, the New York Giants has been. Hopefully they feel the same way and we can make that work out.”
Arizona Cardinals: Bruce Arians declined to announce a decision on his future following a 26-22 victory at Seattle. There has been mounting speculation for weeks that Arians will leave the Cardinals (8-8) at end the end of the season. He was emotional and spoke with pride about his team’s performance in the finale, which included winning a third straight game in Seattle.
“I’m not going to drag it out because it’s not fair to people if I do decide,” Arians said.
Cincinnati Bengals: Is Marvin Lewis really walking away after 15 seasons and 125 wins?
“I don’t know that,” Lewis said after his Bengals stunned Baltimore 31-27. “We’ll see. There are decisions to be made. First, it would be ownership.”
Lewis is scheduled to meet with owner Mike Brown to discuss his future.
“Yes, I want to coach this team,” Lewis said. Asked if he would return if Brown asks him back, Lewis replied: “It’s more complicated than that.”
Denver Broncos: Vance Joseph’s team lost eight times by double digits and endured an eight-game losing streak — the franchise’s longest in 50 years — in a 5-11 season. Joseph will meet with general manager John Elway to discuss his future Monday.
“I want to be here,” Joseph said following a 27-24 loss to Kansas City. “It’s a football team that’s close. We have to make some adjustments in some places, but our football team all year has not stopped working. That was fun to see, even tonight. It’s been a hard year, but everyone kept fighting. I want to be here to fix it.”
Houston Texans: Bill O’Brien’s first losing record (4-12) in four years hardly seems like a fire-able offense, especially considering season-ending injuries to dynamic quarterback Deshaun Watson and star pass rushers J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus.
But O’Brien is 31-33 with the Texans and reportedly doesn’t get along with general manager Rick Smith, who announced after the finale that he’s taking a leave of absence to help his wife, who is battling breast cancer. O’Brien has one year remaining on his contract and likely will get a chance to see what he can do in a full season with Watson.
