Enlarge / A second-generation Epyc server chip from AMD, one that may have been running 2002-era Linux code slowing it down. (credit: Getty Images)
AMD has come a long way since 2002, but the Linux kernel still treats modern Threadrippers like Athlon-era systems—at least in one potentially lag-inducing respect.
AMD engineer Prateek Nayak recently submitted a patch to Linux’s processor idle drivers that would “skip dummy wait for processors based on the Zen microarchitecture.” When ACPI support was added to the Linux kernel in 2002—written by Andy Grover, committed by Linus Torvalds—it included a “dummy wait op.” The system essentially read data with no purpose other than delaying the next instruction until the CPU could fully stop with the STPCLK# command. This allowed for some power saving and compatibility during the early days of ACPI implementation when some chipsets wouldn’t move to an idle state when one would expect it.
But today’s Zen-based AMD chips don’t need this workaround, and, as Nayak writes, it’s hurting them, at least in specific workloads on Linux. Testing with instruction-based sampling (IBS) workloads shows that “a significant amount of time is spent in the dummy op, which incorrectly gets accounted as C-State residency.” The CPU, seeing all this low-effort dummy work, can push into deeper, slower C-State, which then makes the CPU take longer to “wake up,” especially on jobs that require lots of switching between busy and idle states.

Researchers this week unveiled a new strain of Linux malware that’s notable for its stealth and sophistication in infecting both traditional servers and smaller Internet-of-things devices.
Dubbed Shikitega by the AT&T Alien Labs researchers who discovered it, the malware is delivered through a multistage infection chain using polymorphic encoding. It also abuses legitimate cloud services to host command-and-control servers. These things make detection extremely difficult.
“Threat actors continue to search for ways to deliver malware in new ways to stay under the radar and avoid detection,” AT&T Alien Labs researcher Ofer Caspi wrote. “Shikitega malware is delivered in a sophisticated way, it uses a polymorphic encoder, and it gradually delivers its payload where each step reveals only part of the total payload. In addition, the malware abuses known hosting services to host its command and control servers.”

It has been six years since Dell first introduced its XPS Developer Edition moniker, which refers specifically to the company’s XPS laptop models that ship with Ubuntu Linux (and not Windows) pre-installed. Ever since, Dell has been producing some of the best Linux “ultrabooks” in recent memory.
Ars has already put the Windows-boasting XPS 13 through its paces earlier this year since the device received a serious overhaul in 2018. Dell bumped up the hardware specs, revamped the thermal system, and introduced a new rose and white version, for instance. But how is latest edition of the premier “just works” Linux laptop doing with the added muscle?

IBM isn’t a stranger to Linux by any stretch, but it might just become one of the platform’s strongest supporters in the near future — and shake up the cloud landscape, for that matter. IBM has announced a deal to buy Linux giant and open source enterprise software developer Red Hat for the equivalent value of $ 34 billion. Provided it clears regulatory hurdles, the acquisition should close in the second half of 2019.
If you ask IBM, the deal is all about the cloud. It expects to become the world’s leading “hybrid cloud provider” (that is, a mix of local and outside cloud services) and will treat Red Hat as a “distinct unit” inside its Hybrid Cloud group. It also expects to use Red Hat’s open source roots to its advantage — in theory, this encourages companies to move to the cloud when they’d otherwise be wary of being locked in.
And yes, both companies are aware of the impact this will have on Linux and open source at large. The two are “committed” to open source, including contributions to the community. They also stressed that they’ve been working together on “enterprise-grade” Linux for the past two decades. You aren’t about to see Red Hat’s operating system vanish. The real question is whether Red Hat’s influence on Linux and open source will grow now that it has IBM’s financial backing.

]]>Tech on TV: Better Call Saul. Click here for transcript. (video link)
On the surface, nothing about Better Call Saul appears particularly innovative. Crime and legal dramas stand as one of TV’s oldest formats, and this one happens to be set in the near-past. The show can’t even draw on the latest headlines where the bleeding edge of tech runs into law. On top of that, of course, Saul spun-off from the wildly successfully Breaking Bad, meaning a lot of this world’s largest narrative arcs have been spelled out already (to say nothing of the critical shadow Breaking Bad casts).
And yet through three seasons, Better Call Saul has surprised viewers from every angle—its subtle tech-savvy included. If the show’s writing and visual language don’t give it away, Saul happens to boast one of television’s most experienced and creative staff and crew. Even if Jimmy McGill doesn’t have hacker friends or carry a futuristic laser pistol, the show hides plenty of clever VFX work in relatively plain sight.

With the power of tools like Crouton, anyone so inclined can already run Linux on a Chromebook. The process is a bit fiddly, however, and requires that you enable developer mode — which carries potential security risks. Now, thanks to a recent Chrome OS update, you’ll be able to launch .deb (Debian) packages minus such hassles.
Installing .deb files on Linux systems is normally as simple as a double-click, but developers have been working hard to bring Project Crostini — essentially native Chrome OS support for Linux apps — to fruition as well. Although Pixelbooks were the first to offer the feature, it’s slowly started trickling out to a number of devices including Samsung’s Chromebook Plus before availability becomes widespread.
The move promises several benefits. For starters, tinkering around with Linux apps will be much simpler for users unfamiliar with the OS. Linux faithfuls will now be able to easily access exclusives like Shutter, and the possibility of alternative imaging editing suites opens up too. Google says it’ll also give developers the option to create and run both Android and web apps directly from their Chromebooks.

After starting with Ubuntu, Microsoft has added a number of Linux distributions to its Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) Linux runtime environment. A Windows machine can simultaneously offer an Ubuntu, SUSE, Debian, and Kali “personality,” providing users with a choice of the different distributions’ preferences and package management.
But if your distribution isn’t yet available or if you want a Linux installation that’s customized just the way you like it, there’s now an answer: Microsoft has an open source tool for building your own Linux package. The tool is aimed at two groups: distribution owners (so they can produce a bundle to ship through the Microsoft Store) and developers (so they can create custom distributions and sideload them onto their development systems).
Microsoft’s tool provides the basic glue between Windows and the Linux distribution. It handles telling the system about the distribution and performing initial setup such as user creation, and it can be customized to—for example—print a message of the day when the distribution is started.

Microsoft released the first version of its quantum development kit and a new quantum computing programming language Q# last December. Today, the company has released an update that adds support for quantum development on macOS and Linux. Both the Q# language, and the company’s quantum simulator, will run on these platforms in addition to Windows.
The new release of the simulator is much faster than the first release, with the company saying that it runs four to five times faster, especially on simulations with 20 or more qubits.
The quantum libraries and samples are now available under an open source license—the source to these was previously merely shared—enabling others to modify and extend them. Interoperability with existing libraries is also being improved: Microsoft is working on integrating Python support. On Windows, today’s release includes a preview of the Python integration, which allows Q# programs to call Python code and vice versa.

For all of its Nintendo customizations, the Switch is ultimately a tablet running a garden variety NVIDIA Tegra processor — and that means it can potentially handle the same software as other mobile devices. To prove that point, the fail0verflow team has shown a Switch running an honest-to-goodness Linux distribution. The touchscreen, networking and accelerated 3D graphics are all functioning, as evidenced by the modders tweeting from the Switch and running a benchmark. You’re not about to run Steam games on it (many Linux apps aren’t built for ARM-based chips), but you could theoretically use the Switch as a basic computer.
Fail0verflow hasn’t explained exactly how the necessary exploit works, but it may be easier than you think. The team previously noted that it’s taking advantage of a bug in the Switch’s bootrom (the fixed low-level code that runs the moment you turn the device on), which prevents Nintendo from patching it on current consoles. You don’t need a mod chip, either. The only way for Nintendo to thwart this is to release updated hardware, and that might not happen for a while.
There’s no word yet on whether or not the exploit and techniques involved will be made widely accessible. Don’t expect to try this at home, then, even if you’re willing to throw caution (and your warranty) to the wind. As it stands, this is more of a because-we-can hack than something many Switch owners would find practical. You’d probably get better value out of running homebrew games, and that’s a tougher challenge given that Nintendo can easily update its operating system to block unauthorized software.
Code execution is all the rage these days, but can your Switch do *this*?
