Late-night comedians continue to experiment with their formats while hunkered down in their respective coronavirus bunkers. For instance, The Daily Show With Trevor Noah on Wednesday rebranded as The Daily Social Distancing Show. During the 17-minute, online-only episode, the Comedy Central host provided updates on the pandemic and checked in with correspondent Roy Wood Jr. over video chat. Meanwhile, Full Frontal‘s Samantha Bee launched Beeing at Home, a daily digital series with tips on how to “survive and thrive while also social distancing.” First up, the TBS host offered a lesson on how not to chop wood:
Over on NBC, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon front-loaded a previously scheduled repeat with the second installment of its At Home web-series. The episode featured a brief Zoom interview with Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, who closed things out with a performance of Hamilton‘s “Dear Theodosia”:
As for other late-night hosts… ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel explained what society will be forced to do if the elderly don’t stay home and take the necessary precautions. “It’s going to force us to do something drastic, something we don’t want to do, like taking Blue Bloods away,” he said. “You want that to happen? Don’t make us take Donnie Wahlberg from you, because we will.” He also checked in with sidekick/security guard Guillermo:
On TBS, Conan O’Brien suggested alternatives for those who didn’t get out in time to stock up on toilet paper. Among them were old CVS receipts, Valpak coupons and stocks for Carnival Cruise Line:
Comedy Central’s David Spade delivered his first “Lo-Fi” Lights Out monologue. Towards the end, he said that the fate of humanity rides on whether “national treasure” Tom Hanks, who tested positive for coronavirus, manages to pull through:
Over on CBS, The Late Show‘s Stephen Colbert offered a powerful message of hope: “If there’s one good thing that might come out of this crisis, I think it’s that in this seemingly divided nation, people are doing their best to protect the country’s collective wellbeing,” he said. “Everywhere you look, people are looking after each other, getting food or cleaning supplies for their neighbors, regardless of what that neighbor’s politics are. Democrat, Republican, socialist… it doesn’t matter right now. We can still disagree about many things, but this crisis has driven home — literally home — the truth that this is one great nation, united by our belief in, and our need for, each other, and reinforced my belief that the American people, like all people, are essentially good, and always want to know how to do the right thing.”
Who’s ready for some Santiago sibling rivalry? On Thursday’s episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine (NBC, 9/8c), self-proclaimed superfan Lin-Manuel Miranda guest-stars as Amy’s brother David — and TVLine has an exclusive sneak peek at his debut. As previously reported, Amy and David are highly competitive. “I think the audience will have a lot of moments throughout the episode where they go, ‘Oh, that’s the reason why Amy is the way that she is,” newly christened Performer of the Week Melissa Fumero tells TVLine. “To say they have a strong sibling rivalry is putting it lightly.” That much is hinted at in the above clip, as Jake helps Amy mentally prepare for dinner with David and her mom (returning guest star Bertila Damas). “It’s the first time [Jake] has ever really had to ‘husband up’ and figure out his role in the crazy Santiago family,” Fumero says. “He has some husband moments that I think the Peraltiago fans will go nuts over.” So what was it like to have Miranda, one of the “Guardians of the Nine-Nine,” play her brother? “It was so amazing and so surreal to have Lin on the show after so many years,” Fumero says. “He was geeking out the whole time, so excited to be there and making up songs about how he was on his favorite show. We were all like, ‘This is so weird. You’re a genius and you’re so gracious to be here.’ He’s the loveliest.” Assuming Miranda’s first appearance isn’t his last, Fumero would love to see him back for a Peraltiago Thanksgiving episode attended by all of Amy’s brothers. “We’ve literally tried to do that story a few times,” she says. Evil Dead director Sam Raimi is teaming with Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda for a big screen adaptation of Patrick Rothfuss‘ The Kingkiller Chronicle. Raimi will direct the film, with Miranda producing and writing music for the project. This is part of a multiplatform deal that will develop Rothfuss’ book series for film, television, and video games. More on the Kingkiller Chronicle director news below.
A team-up between Evil Dead and Spider-Man director Sam Raimi and Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda may have seemed unlikely before, but now it’s happening thanks to Pat Rothfuss’ The Kingkiller Chronicle. Variety reports that Raimi is in negotiations to direct the first film in the proposed series, inspired by Rothfuss’ fantasy series. Should Raimi officially join the project, he’ll be working alongside Miranda, the Pulitzer Prize-winning mastermind behind Hamilton. Miranda was hired by Lionsgate in 2016 to serve as a “creative producer” and write music and original songs for the project.
The Kingkiller Chronicle currently consists of two books, The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear, with a third book planned but not yet published. The fantasy series focuses on Kvothe, an adventurer and famous musician (thus the need for songs). Here’s the official synopsis of the first book:
Told in Kvothe’s own voice, this is the tale of the magically gifted young man who grows to be the most notorious wizard his world has ever seen. The intimate narrative of his childhood in a troupe of traveling players, his years spent as a near-feral orphan in a crime-ridden city, his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a legendary school of magic, and his life as a fugitive after the murder of a king form a gripping coming-of-age story unrivaled in recent literature.
Lionsgate signed a multiplatform deal which will develop Rothfuss’ books simultaneously for film, television, and video games. This includes an already-in-development TV series at Showtime. The Showtime series, described as ““a subversive origin story of legendary proportions set a generation before the events of the trilogy’s first novel,” will serve as a prequel for the overall story. Miranda will executive produce and compose music for the series.
Lindsey Beer, who was a co-writer on Transformers: The Last Knight, is penning the script for the first Raimi-directed film, which will adapt The Name of the Wind. This will mark Raimi’s return to feature filmmaking after making 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful. Miranda, meanwhile, has a whole slew of projects on the horizon, including a film adaptation of his musical In The Heights and a co-starring role in Mary Poppins Returns. And sooner or later, I’m sure they’ll get around to making a Hamilton movie.
I confess I haven’t read The Kingkiller Chronicle series, but I have seen Hamilton on Broadway (twice), and I’m a big fan of Sam Raimi, so this combination seems too good to pass up.

For a comic series that will not be adapted into a film or television show at any point in the near future, I sure have written many words about Saga on this film and television website. Perhaps it’s because Saga, written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples, is one of the best comics I’ve ever read. Maybe it’s because I’m just tickled by two comic creators deliberately shunning the fat paycheck that would come with selling the rights. Eh, it’s both!
But now, Vaughan and Staples have opened the door just a crack: they wouldn’t say no to Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda making a musical adaptation.
In a new interview with Vulture (ahead of the comic beginning a new story arc next month), Vaughan and Staples made it clear that yes, they were aware that Thor: Ragnarok star Tessa Thompson has declared that she’d love to star in a Saga movie and while they’re flattered, they still have no plans to adapt the series.
But then the interviewer throws them a curveball: what about Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Tony-award winning artist who wrote and starred in Broadway’s Hamilton before receiving an Oscar nomination for his songwriting in Disney’s Moana? As wacky as this connection may seem, Miranda had praised Saga to the New York Times, saying the R-rated sci-fi space opera was “an incredible world in which to get lost.” Now this seemed to get the attention of Vaughan and Staples:
Vaughan: Yeah, I love that column about creators and books in the Times, so I was reading it myself when I saw that epic Saga shout-out. We’ve never spoken with Mr. Miranda, but seeing Hamilton on stage was one of the greatest experiences of my artistic life, and it’s a ridiculous honor to know he reads our work. I know I said we’re not pursuing adaptations, but if Lin-Manuel ever wants to mount a Saga musical, it’s all his, wouldn’t you say, Fiona?
Staples: Absolutely! I bet Fard has great pipes.
Those of you who have read Saga and know Fard will get that joke. Everyone else…maybe don’t Google that. Trust me. Please.
This is all very silly and it’s not going to happen (like ever), but I love this for two reasons. First, it’s always lovely to see artists from disparate fields appreciate one another’s work. Knowing that the team behind a filthy adults-only space opera about the difficulties of parenting in a dangerous galaxy appreciates the work of a genius songwriter and composer who spent years adapting the life of Alexander Hamilton into a hip-hop stage musical (and vice versa) makes me happy! Second, Miranda is actually perfectly suited to adapt Saga, as his attention to character and his ability to condense massive swaths of story into a single memorable song would be a perfect fit for this sprawling comic series.
But for now, we’ll just have to make do with Saga being a great comic and Miranda adapting The Kingkiller Chronicles for Showtime.

Stephen Colbert on Thursday got a last-minute assist from Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda in his fundraising efforts to help Puerto Rico rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
This is the crosswalk where it happened.
Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda let the sunshine in on Thursday, joining Late Late Show host James Corden for an impromptu production of the Broadway show Hair.
The two Tony winners strip down for the latest installment of “Crosswalk the Musical,” a segment which typically finds Corden, his inflated ego and a very special guest performing full-on productions of some of America’s most beloved stage shows when L.A. traffic lights turn red.
Corden, who is initially excited to tell his acting troupe about Miranda’s involvement, quickly grows jealous when one of his background actors insists that he’s seen Hamilton 20 times. Corden then suggests they all partake in an orgy to get in the full “peace and love” spirit of the 1960s, an idea which is met with the appropriate awkward silence.
“In a lot of ways, I feel like everything I’ve done has been leading up to this point,” Miranda says when interviewed about the musical. “For seven years when I was writing Hamilton, all I could think was, ‘This is big enough. I might get on the crosswalk.’” And get on the crosswalk he did, but not before a pep talk from Corden.
“Remember, this could be it for you,” Corden tells Miranda. “This could launch you in the theatre.”
From there, the duo go on to perform a selection of tracks from the Broadway show, including “Aquarius” and the titular “Hair.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda continues his streak as Disney’s darling, first jumping on the House of Mouse’s ship to co-write the songs to 2016’s animated Polynesian-set adventure, Moana. He then was announced as the co-lead of Mary Poppins Returns, the new sequel with Emily Blunt to the musical classic that originally starred Julie Andrews.
Now, Miranda is signing on to score the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid with one of his idols, and the original composer of the 1989 animated classic, Alan Menken.
Menken will be working with Miranda to create new music for the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, which does not yet have a director or a cast. This news was previously announced last year, but it was confirmed by Menken himself at the D23 Expo on Sunday.
Disney Legend Alan Menken has scored nearly every animated film in the Disney Renaissance (that’s the films made by Disney from 1989’s The Little Mermaid to 1999’s Tarzan) and won eight Academy Awards for his work.
This is exciting news for the live-action adaptation for two reasons. Miranda, having turned his smash Broadway hit Hamilton into a pop culture phenomenon as well as created a phenomenal soundtrack for Moana, is one of the best musical minds out there. Couple him with Menken, who essentially ushered in the modern age of Disney musicals, and you’ve got a dream team. The second reason: we’re getting a live-action adaptation that isn’t just a copy-and-paste of the original film. One of my least favorite aspects of Beauty and the Beast was its rigid loyalty to the 1991 animated film, down to its song sequences and line deliveries. What’s the point of adapting a film for live action if you’re going to do the exact same thing?
Miranda’s involvement with The Little Mermaid and his working with Menken to compose new songs for the film adds some promise to the live-action Disney formula. Maybe instead of churning out the same movie with real actors and bigger budgets, we can get a new take or perspective on the story — and most importantly, new songs.
It’s no wonder that Miranda jumped at the chance to score The Little Mermaid, as he is a big self-professed fan of the film, even naming his son Sebastian. Miranda is also reportedly producing the live-action film alongside Marc Platt.
There aren’t many more details about the live-action The Little Mermaid, much less a release date. So while we amp up our anticipation for the film, here’s Miranda singing “Under The Sea” while working on Moana.
