Cruise liner Hurtigruten have revealed their newest endeavours to reduce their carbon footprint.

Cruises are notoriously bad for the environment, emitting sulphur oxide which damages the sea and atmosphere.

Many companies have announced plans to remove plastic straws and single-use plastic on their ships in the next decade.

Hurtigruten announced they planned to replace fuel with a rather disgusting product instead.

The cruise line will use dead fish to power their ships, a much greener method.

Known as liquefied biogas, it is made from dead fish and decomposed organic waste and will cost $ 826 million over three years to implement.

The alternative fuel will be used alongside battery packs and natural gas to run the ships and reduce their emissions.

It is hoped to be introduced to six of the 17 ships by 2021.

Hurtigruten Chief Executive Officer Daniel Skjeldam said in a statement: “Sustainability will be a key driver for the new era of shipping and the travel industry.”

He added: “While competitors are running on cheap, polluting heavy fuel oil, our ships will literally be powered by nature.

“Biogas is the greenest fuel in shipping and will be a huge advantage for the environment.”

Skjeldam urged “other cruise companies to follow” to help the environment, with his plans to eventually be fully carbon-neutral.

He has also ordered three hybrid powered cruise liners lines to be added to the fleet.

Hurtigruten’s removal of plastic earlier this year included single-use plastic lids, straws, bags and and cups.

Earlier this year, MSC Cruises pledged to remove all single-use plastic onboard the ship by 2019.

This includes cups, containers and straws which are often provided onboard the ship.

Royal Caribbean are to also remove all plastic straws onboard by 2018, with paper straws on offer instead.

P&O and Cunard will remove all single-use plastic by 2022.

  • Carnival Cruise Ships launched its latest addition to its fleet this year, with the Carnival Horizon taking sail on April 2, 2018. 
  • The Horizon is the most recent addition to Carnival’s line of “Vista class” ships, a new line that can carry over 133,000 gross tonnage. These ships feature IMAX theaters, themed staterooms and bars, and outdoor sports areas. 
  • “Carnival Horizon offers some new one-of-a-kind features and attractions that make this ship truly special allowing our guests to create a lifetime of wonderful vacation memories,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a press statement. 
  • Carnival Cruise Line has been named “America’s Most Trusted Cruise Line” by Reader’s Digest four years in a row. 

In April, Carnival launched its latest cruise ship, the Carnival Horizon, the most recent addition to its line of “Vista class” ships.

The Carnival Horizon, the 26th ship in the company’s fleet, departed from Barcelona, Spain on April 2, 2018 for its initial cruise. It then held a summer schedule of four-day Bermuda and eight-day Caribbean sailings out of New York. Beginning on September 22, the Carnival Horizon will begin docking at Miami for a year-round schedule of six-day and eight-day Caribbean cruises. 

“In addition to the many exciting innovations previously introduced on Carnival Vista, Carnival Horizon offers some new one-of-a-kind features and attractions that make this ship truly special allowing our guests to create a lifetime of wonderful vacation memories,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, in a statement.

Carnival Cruise Line has been named “America’s Most Trusted Cruise Line” by Reader’s Digest four years in a row. 

Carnival Horizon introduces multiple novel additions to the cruise ship line. Most notable is its Dr. Seuss-themed outdoor water-park, as well as its unique bike-ride-in-the-sky activity called SkyRide. There is also an IMAX theater onboard, spa cabins, Cuban-themed state-rooms and bars, Guy Fieri-inspired burger and BBQ restaurants.

The fascinating five-page booklet was produced exclusively for first-class passengers.

The front cover is dominated by a picture of the awe-inspiring liner dwarfing other vessels.

Inside, one page is devoted to the Louis XVI Restaurant where a la carte meals were served till 11pm, while another showcases the Cafe Parisien, setting of choice for late-night card games.

The upmarket restaurant reception, with its pillars and mahogany tables, was designated for afternoon tea, while well-to-do travellers could unwind in the lavish Turkish bath room which “rivals anything similar to be found in London, Paris or New York”.

Just 325 first-class passengers were able to make the most of these opulent surroundings out of the 2,208 passengers on board.

The brochure is being sold for an estimated £8,000 along with an equally scarce ticket for the launch of the Titanic in Belfast on May 31, 1911 – 11 months before it hit an iceberg and sank with the loss of 1,522 lives.

There were just 705 survivors.

The VIP ticket is tipped to sell for £25,000.

The items are being auctioned on Saturday week in Devizes, Wiltshire.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said: “Both the brochure and ticket are exceptionally rare.”

Of the ticket, he said it was only one of a handful to have survived with its stub.

He added: “It is a truly exceptional piece of Titanic and Belfast history.”

Cruise secrets that have been revealed over the years have opened up the world of the cruise holiday.

From cruise crew parties to dirty cabins, many of the secrets may have been better to stay hidden.

Yet with the cruise industry continuing to grow as more Britons take to the seas for their holiday, there is still much that remains a mystery.

Express.co.uk spoke to Captain Tuvo from the ITV documentary “The Cruise” about some of the things he has learnt by being a captain onboard the Star Princess.

Captain Tuvo revealed to Express.co.uk: “My main priority is taking control of the steering of the ship and ensuring we get into every port safely and on time.

“Otherwise everyone runs the ship slightly differently.”

He explained how much walking it requires, with some of the larger cruise ships over 1,000 feet long.

He stated: “I like to manage by walking, so I start from the upper deck and walk all the others probably 6-7 times to make sure crew members and guests are happy.

“In a day I cover between 18,000 and 20,000 steps.”

The Star Princess, with over 3,100 guests, was featured in the documentary showing many of the passengers and cabin crew as they toured Alaska.

Captain Tuva explained how the hardest part of the job can be “docking under strenuous weather conditions”.

Many travellers may not realise that in bad weather conditions, certain destinations on the itinerary may have to be skipped.

Passengers could be entitled to compensation for the additional costs if this happens to them but it is often given back as cruise credit.

Cruise holidays are on the rise, something which Captain Tuvo credits to being able to “move from one place to the next without having to pack and unpack time and again”.

A record number of Britons went on a cruise holiday in 2017, with 1.9 million heading for a holiday on the sea, according to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).

Unsurprisingly, the Mediterranean is the most popular destination for its beautiful beaches and sunny climate.

The number of cruisers could exceed the record in 2018.

Cruise holidays have rapidly changed over the past century as technology has allowed for radical developments. 

Ships are now built to offer more luxury than ever, with many cruise lines pushing the boundaries when it comes to new features on board. 

From race tracks to rollercoasters, skydiving and mega slides, cruise ships in 2017 are a lesson in entertainment. 

But the future of cruise ship travel could be even more mind-blowing. 

Shared on Reddit, one image shows the striking concept of a flying cruise ship. 

The blip-like vessel is shown soaring over mountains and through clouds, with guests wandering on top of it. 

A pool is set on the surface, set by deck chairs and green space up the back. 

The incredible cruise ship-plane hybrid has thoroughly impressed the internet. 

Also shared on Imgur, the image has been viewed over one million times, with hundreds of comments. 

One user wrote: “We shall call it… The Flytanic!” while another thought it should be called the “Skytanic”. 

Another viewer wrote: “I love these, hope they become a thing at some point.”

One Reddit user questioned what would happen if the “ship” hit turbulence, while another joked it would creat a “free wave pool”.

Though the concept might seem inconceivable, flying cruise ships could exist in the future. 

One company is testing out a design called the Aeroscaft, a blimp-like airship that lifts off like a helium-filled balloon.

The luxury cruise liner has taken to the Nile after a radical transformation. 

After 15 years sailing down the iconic Egyptian river, the Philae was bought by the Oberoi Group, a premium hotel chain in India. 

The rundown ship received a £8m million makeover and in late 2015 it took to the Nile’s waters again. 

By that time only 40 of the Nile’s 280 cruise boats remained in business. 

Years of political unrest saw tourism in Egypt plunge by 30 per cent since 2010. 

But the Philae is a booming business when it comes to luring holidaymakers. 

Fit with 22 staterooms and an airy atrium with crystal chandelier, the ship is fit for a king. 

Polished marble lines the floors and benches are laid with leather. 

Each stateroom is 600 square feet, with a sitting area, king-size bed and bathroom. 

The Oberoi Philae journeys between Luxor and Aswan on four and six night itineraries. 

Guests dine Western, Indian, Asian and Middle Eastern meals in indoor, lounge and poolside dining areas. 

There’s a cigar lounge, movie theatre, spa and fitness centre on board. 

The Philae also features a swimming pool on its top deck and a breezy al fresco restaurant. 

According to locals American visitors have significantly withdrawn from the area, but Chinese holidaymakers can’t get enough of the Nile. 

The drop in US tourists has coincided with Donald Trump’s proposed flight ban from Muslim countries including Egypt. 

Last month, the US president also placed a laptop ban on direct inbound flights from 10 nations, with Egypt on the list.

Spirit of Discovery is the name chosen by the cruise operator for its brand new liner. 

Scheduled for delivery in summer 2019, the ship is the first new build vessel to be added to Saga’s fleet. 

Spirit of Discovery will carry 999 passengers with over 100 cabins for solo travellers. 

The chief executive of Saga Cruises said it was a “great pleasure” to announce the new name. 

Robin Shaw added: “In September 2015 we announced that we were to build our first cruise ship – we’re still on a high from that news. 

“The name ‘Spirit of Discovery’ evokes the adventurous nature and new experiences that cruise customers desire.”

Key to the whole design process has been our customer insight. We know they want to experience new things in a luxurious, small ship environment. 

“Our new ship’s itineraries will take customers to fresh, new destinations and will include more overnight stays in key ports.”

Spirit of Discovery’s moniker is an evolution of Saga’s short-lived Spirit of Adventure. 

It also shows striking similarity to Voyages of Discovery, a cruise line which went bust earlier this year. 

Saga’s new ship will be built in Germany’s Meyer-Werft shipyard. 

It will join the small-sized Saga Sapphire and replace the line’s smaller cruise, Saga Pearl II.
